Title: Bitzaar.com - Bitcoins for Merchants
Post by: rnavarro on October 29, 2011, 01:07:01 AM
Hello Everyone!

I know my project may be against the entire vibe of this community, but for some of you it may be useful, and for you I will pursue it!

I'd like to present the official public beta (alpha?  :o) of Bitzaar (https://stage.bitzaar.com)!

Bitzaar (https://stage.bitzaar.com) aims to be an e-wallet service, but focused on merchants. We want to make it easy for merchants to accept bitcoins and conduct business with this magical currency.

At Bitzaar (https://stage.bitzaar.com) we'll be focusing primarily on enabling merchants to provide their services without having to worry about bitcoin clients, server security, or any of the other things associated with accepting a currency. We're going to be introducing more cart integrations in the near future, for now we just have the big one...WHMCS.

We want merchants to focus on what they do best, their products and customers!

For right now I'm only announcing a preview of the service that runs on the Bitcoin testnet. This is to close any security holes that may come up, polish features and usability, and get general feedback without you having to worry about losing any of your hard earned coins.

https://stage.bitzaar.com

Constructive  ;) feedback is most appreciated!

Ideas and feature requests are more than welcome!  We'll be trying to release as safely and often as we can. ;D

We're in the process of adding Dwolla for account withdrawals. This should be done by the final non-testnet release.

Do you have a way to prove that you're trustworthy?
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, but when you say e-wallet service on these boards... warning bells go off.

Yeah I know, hence the first line of my post.

How do you build trust? It takes time and good will from a community.

I started developing this app Wed Apr 13 21:13:31 2011 -0400 as per my commit logs. I saw mybitcoin come and go, MtGox and a flurry of other services get hacked.

I tried to build Bitzaar in a way that learned from those mistakes, bcrypting passwords and securing APIs (to the best of my current knowledge) for example.

I'm willing to jump through a reasonable amount of hoops to prove the validity to the community...but it's a catch 22...it'll take time to earn the good will.

You can start by removing whois protection and provide some real contact data. There really are too many anonymous businesses around here, the community should filter them out if we don't want history repeating itself over and over again.

Fair enough, I've "de-cloaked" the domain.

Much like Google allows their engineers to use 20% of their time on projects they're passionate about, my company offers a similar program. Under this program I developed Bitzaar.

That being said:
Yes, we are a real company.
Yes, we've been around for a while.
Yes, I'm committed to my project.

Any other constructive comments and/or concerns are encouraged!

Just to pull in some comments and discussion from a reddit thread:

And in your FAQ you write "Due to the fact that exchange rates are only calculated when withdrawing funds your per-transaction exchange rate risk is very low." I'm not sure what you mean with that exactly. If the exchange rate at the time of my withdraw is used, I actually have more exchange rate risk this way. Because I'm exposing myself to all the exchange rate movement that happens between my sale (where I might have set prices according to the exchange rate at the time) and the time when I withdraw. If you want to minimize exchange rate risk for merchants you should be converting to local currency as quickly as possible.

As for transaction fee's....I put a bit of thought into this and decided that it was likely easier for merchants to deal with this in a "lump sum" transaction. That is, when merchants wish to withdraw from their account the currency exchange takes place, then and there, upon withdrawal.

That being said, I'd like to enable the most flexibility for the merchant and will probably allow the merchant to choose how they want their transactions exchanged, on the fly or lump sum. I haven't figured out a safe and easy way to get this done yet, but rest assured it's definitely on the todo list!

On the "for developers" tab, it would be good to see how you would actually integrate this into a site.
What's the API ?

I guess the limited examples should be expanded upon.
As of right now we have a gateway that you can POST a certain set of parameters to in order to facilitate a transaction. The code to do this is on the page and I'll be expanding with some more examples shortly.

We also have a WHMCS connector that handles this on your behalf, you just have to fill in the relevant bits in your WHMCS install.
