Title: Bitcoin and me (Hal Finney) - thread
Post by: Jating on September 14, 2018, 11:22:20 AM
Can I suggest that the mods locked Bitcoin and me (Hal Finney) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155054.700/)

Noticed that the last couple of post was just pure spammed (newbies->jr member) and I even saw merit being given away. Out of respect to the Legend himself, locked it but the thread should be sticked though so that newbies will have a idea who Hal is and contributions he did for Bitcoin.

The person who is bitcoin enthusiast will find Hal Finney today or tomorrow no matter if the post needs advertising or not. Those who only care about earning money from crypto and cryptospace - may never know who was him.

RIP.

That post from him is so inspirational and good to read. I think we should let a few spammers keep bumping it so that the genuine users get to see it and get inspired by that.

Locking and sticking the thread would probably stop the spammers, but do people really read stickies these days? I don't think so.

In this forum, in my opinion I don't think so. If they are reading then there must be no users getting banned here for some reasons. One thing more, MOST if not all of thr people don't read stickies because after creating an account, they will find ways to earn which is a bit disappointed and sad for me.

Actually I think even spammers are reading the stickies and the rules here in Bitcointalk. The problem is even though they've read it, they're still not following it and they are still violating it because they know that what they were doing (posting spams for bounty quotas) are against the rules. Almost all forums in the web has its own rules even fittotalk, reddit and stackoverflow etc. so it means it's impossible that these spammers didn't know that such rules exists.

It is almost impossible even if you bump that thread quite often, Bitcoin Discussions is (still) full of spam.

Locking and sticking the thread would probably stop the spammers, but do people really read stickies these days? I don't think so.

On what basis does this come up? Take a look at the "views" statistics of the sticky thread, it is increasing every day. So yeah, people still read it (whoever it is).

You mean we let that inspirational post of Hal be a breeding ground for spammers?

Locking and sticking the thread would probably stop the spammers, but do people really read stickies these days? I don't think so.

As @ joniboini has pointed out, stickies has a fairly good amount of views, meaning they are people who read it everyday.

And by reading at the last post:

I think the reason that the thread is not stickied in the forum is because of the shitpost posted in there.

I don't know how the "views" are increasing day by day. Maybe the old members are opening them for seeing stuff for posting and references and some other reasons, because if the newcomers were really reading the stickies in each board, there wouldn't have been so many repeated questions and threads in almost every single board. I don't think they don't care about being nuked or banned as their purpose is to earn money from the forum and they won't be able to do it after any of the two, I mentioned, happens. Maybe they are too lazy to read them, or they just don't realize they are important and they ignore them because they are a little dim in appearance than the threads below them, I don't know.

Perhaps they are hoping to se Hal coming back alive.
You know his body has been frozen in a coffin and the CIA is paying the medical costs

Maybe there should be some sort of special archive or a sub board of Archive for truly memorable/classic threads that deserve a place in bitcointalk history. One like this and the laszlo pizza thread probably should be locked as they just get bumped from time to time and are then inevitably filled with crap from sig spammers. The community could vote on which ones are worthy or not, but it is kinda of pointless leaving them open, especially when they just get filled with rubbish from spammers looking for another thread to shit in to meet their quota.

Yeah, I would be for a section which highlights some of the remarkable threads that have been posted here. There's quite a few. I think a cleaning of the thread, and prevention of more spam should be done before that though.

After reading these type of post in that thread, I guess it is better to lock that thread. I have no idea how people post crap like this in some sensible thread like that?  This guy did not have any idea what is profession and contribution of Hal Finney.

My best guess is that thread lies on Bitcoin Discussion Board and spammer are just dominating that Board.

I agree with you because I'm also thinking the same thing. A compilation of memorable threads would be a better option instead of sticking only the thread given above. Besides, insisting to stick it might cause others to think that there's a favoritism happening here. Others will probably appeal and tell us "How about the first thread made by satoshi?", "The story of HODL", blah blah blah.

So in order to be nice and fair, hilariousetc has a good point. I think all of it should be compiled in a single thread and pinned to a particular part of the forum, the advantages of it is not only for being well organized but also provides convenience for all the users because digging to those threads one by one will be no longer necessary.

Yes that's exactly what I wanted to achieved. We don't need to see those legendary threads being trashed by shit posters and spammers.
