Title: Suggestion: PM read notification
Post by: fillippone on September 15, 2018, 07:20:39 AM
Hello everyone,
apparently after I send a PM, I have no way to be sure if the recepient actually read the message.
Am I missing anything?
This would be an interesting feature to have.
Thanks,
F1

Yes, I think a message report if its read or unread by the receiver should be add. Which will make sure to the sender if his message is truly viewed or the receiver just missed it.

Many people just use alternate platform like telegram to contact in better way but if this features are added to the forum it will affect many things and make it easy for people to do better conversation on the forums!

Still its just a suggestion, I guess theymos have much things to focus on now so it will take long time for this feature to be updated as there are many more better suggesting to improve this forum but none of them are applied until.

It was being sent actually but you cannot get the assurance by not seing your message being sent just like how the sms works. Your suggestions is good though and it is up to the team of this forum to develop a message like this. So far the PM's are good bur if your suggestion  be imposed and implemented i guess it would be better also.

I think it is an humble suggestion with a trivial implementation. Shouldn’t really taking long. But the reality is that I don’t know what I am talking about.

As I already mentioned this is a good suggestion but the problem is the implementation takes much time than you would imagine on the forum!
As its is just a one persons authority to change this and that is theymos!

Good suggestion but-
This kind of suggestion has been posted and discussed a few times, I believe. I don't think theymos gonna implement such features.

In my opinion, this feature is not so important to have in a forum. Active users will, of course, check the message because whenever you will send a message, the receiver will be notified through the mail and check definitely.

Even Gmail doesn't have that read notification feature mate. I don't think this is a good idea, it'd be a waste of resource instead.

What would you benefit if you notificated that S/he had read the message?
If S/he does not respond to you, there is no point in knowing that. The messages are used to get a private discussion.
This feature is useful if you are trying to promote a product which I think it is against the rules of the forum.
Edit: found it

22. Advertising (this includes mining pools, gambling services, exchanges, shops, etc.) in others threads' is no longer allowed, including, but not limited to, in altcoin announcement threads. [8]

I assume OP did not have that in mind. Having this feature is not much necessary for a forum. It's okay for a messaging platform but for a forum people should be encouraged to created quality topics and responsive to a post.

Am I missing anything?
You are not missing anything. By now, you should know that there are no such feature exist for this forum.

If you're worried about "if your message will be read by the recipient" then you don't need to worry too much. Whenever someone receives a message from PM here in Bitcointalk, there is a notification that will be sent to the email address associated to the account of the receiver containing your message and when browsing Bitcointalk, a pop up notification will show up saying "You got new message" or something (sorry can't provide screenshot) so it means it makes sure that the recipient will see and may read your message.

One more thing, not because the recipient didn't reply to your message doesn't mean s/he doesn't read it.

I'm not really a fan of this. I think all it will lead to is more issues and more spam messages complaining you read my message but haven't responded sent multiple times every time they see a message has been seen but not responded to. If the person has been online then you can assume with that they've likely read it, or maybe they haven't, but it's up to them ultimately whether they do or choose to respond or not. I don't think this feature is needed.

There is already a long list of features waiting to be implemented and some of them are quite fundamental for a modern forum. It would be nice peraphs to have this feature implemented, but doesn't add that much value imo, is mainly something for your mental peace. :)

(My) mental peace is important!
Well, I looked for that very list, but I failed miserably: do you have a link?
Thanks,

I don't think this is a very good idea.

If I wake up and get [5] messages when I log onto the forum, I go from the last up, so the message would display that I have read a message from someone when I have actually missed it (sometimes I don't check the number of messages in my inbox also before clicking it)...

I think OP forget ther is no chance miss it if receiver never ignore. Because once you send PM to someone he will receive a mail from forum if receiver enable this option. But I think it's enabled by default.

If user didn't doable it than obviously he will receive mail. You will find it on Personal Message Option (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1980983;sa=pmprefs) from your profile.

However I don't think it's necesarry to implement (IMHO). There so many important suggestion waiting for implement.

Not sure I understood exactly what you are meaning, but I want is that when you send a message and the receiver read the message, such message title, for example, turns from bold to normal, so the sender knows the PM has been read. So I’m your example you’d know you left some message unread, and each sender would know if her massage has been read.

I'm questioning the definition of "read". Do you mean if someone clicks the link to the message? Just clicking " my messages" doesn't mean (to me) that someone's read my message.

The reader clicking the title of each single message would make the title of that message turn normal from bold for both reader and sender in their mailboxes.

My thoughs exactly! And that brings me to my next point: when I click "MY MESSAGES", it brings me to the last page, even when I have new messages on the previous page. A very easy solution would be if "MY MESSAGES" brings me to the oldest unseen PM.
When receiving many messages, I can imagine it's easy to overlook some of them if you have to manually search for the oldest unread PM.

Someone's popular ;D.
And yeah, that seems like it's a flaw with the SMF software the forum's built on.

The reader clicking the title of each single message would make the title of that message turn normal from bold for both reader and sender in their mailboxes.
F1

How would you suggest we mark the current PMs then? All read or will I have to go through a hundred pages and mark them individually.

This is a detail. But guessing I want all read, ok?
