Title: Is it possible to hack this forum and credit 100 Merits to own account?
Post by: drmilind2004 on September 30, 2018, 11:37:19 PM
I am asking this question because I just came across a "Full Member" account with exactly 100 Merits and JUST 140 posts and activity.

Now, I've been posting with karma in mind ever since I joined; yet, 16 is all I could muster across 200+ posts, some of them merit-worthy yet uncredited. Naturally, I felt mighty envious of this guy, and decided to see what secret sauce his posts have that mine, more in number, lacked.

Imagine my surprise when I meticulously read through his posts; and found that most of them were trollish, and a few substantial ones were ordinary in content. And, here's the key, NONE of his posts show any award of merit!

This is the account in question:

When the merit system started in January of this year, every account that was already established was given the minimum merit of their rank. Likely, this person was a full member when the merit system started. I was a Legendary at the time and started with 1000 merit.

Thanks for solving my queries. It does look fairly straightforward now; though, like much else in life, somewhat unfair. But, that's the usual way of things. At least the merit system now in place would place some 'efficiency bar' for the future. Also, the forum coding seems sturdy enough and unshakable.  :)

Just so you know that nothing is unhackable in life, you can probably try doing it but that's probably way too hard for one person to handle and try to to do on their own.

In response to your OP, like bones said the merit system airdropped people merits who ever had the required activity so now you know why some members on the forums have exact merit numbers :)

Yeah, as others said there isn't something magical, this user got 100 airdroped Merits in January because he was Full Member when Merit system was introduced. For example, I got 500 airdroped Merits. I think that many new members feel unfair that so many shitposters got airdropped Merit and they can continue shitposting and earning from bounties without worying about getting Merit.
Also, there are some users who bought exactly 100, 250 or even 500 Merit after release of Merit system to reach higher rank.

He probably had airdropped merits, but there are others who have bought accounts, and then deleted posts which may have received merits through merit abuse. Deleting a post doesn't remove the associated merits, and I think that is one of the minor failings in the merit system.

If @bones261 is right (which is for me is) then that sounds not unfair at all. Since that certain user you were trying to talk about is already established and was been here for quite a long time. A year older than you.

Merit system really is quite effective. Tho I can't agree towards its efficiency, there are still alot of holes that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

There are newbies with more than 100 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=258817) merit, don't be surprised. Just check the registration date of the account.
Often those type of accounts have posted mainly in spam mega-threads and when they get deleted, the user's post count and activity are reduced / can be to even to 0/ but the merit are still there.
I've seen a newbie with 500 merit, I don't remember where but definitely not a hacker. :)

I remember seeing one of them but now are two, or probably more :D That's quite of merit abuse.

This site is protected. So, there is almost no chance to hack this site.

It is happened for the merit of airdrop. All users received required number of merit at the time of airdrop of merit. So, if someone had a full member account then he had received 100 merit. Hopefully think your doubt is clear now.

I saw such accounts on the forum.Look at the date of registration.
Account owners have deleted all their posts after administrators have placed a negative trust.
Posts can be deleted, merits can not be deleted.

Should have told the hackers in 2015, maybe they wouldn't have bothered succeeding.

I honestly think the account holders made the decision to wipe the accounts for potential sales in the future. They likely had plagiarism or some other banable offence that they wanted covered up.

Now they can sit back advertise they have an account with true hero potential, and probably Smerit.
