What's your rig like?

Oh by the way for anyone reading....these are my first youtube videos so I didn't think to do them in landscape.

I might do better ones again and think out exactly what I'm going to say before videoing because I want to make sure I get all the details in that I want.  :)

How are you cooling yours btw and how much heat are you generating?  :)

The setup has changed a bit since most of the rigs are now in a small room with 3 ton AC unit cooling them. I am running about 16Kw an hour just for the rigs, so that's around 60000 BTUs of cooling needed.

I'll take some more pictures the next time i'm at the DC.

I wanted to stay away from air conditioning but eventually I gave in. I've a 12 inch centrifugal fan sitting here in the house which I bought used - initally it was for the non air-con route, I did up a plan but wasnt sure if it would work, I talked to a ducting technician and showed him my plan - he said he would consult an engineer - the engineer said air-con was the only way to go. The machines had been sitting doing nothing for too long at that stage so I gave in. I wouldn't have been able to cope if this system failed because I had tried others.

I might take a video of the fan (it's a serious piece of kit - capable of changing the air 67 times an hour in that room) to see if anyone has any ideas on how I might be able to save money using it. I was also considering a radiator to move heat over to warm the radiators in the house.

Cooling is definitely my #1 problem. I can build rigs all day long, but keeping them running efficiently has proven to be a challenge. I have just recently got all 30Gh running stable, cool and efficient. I haven't had to intervene in days except for jumping on ssh to restart a locked up gpu which has been nice.

Depends on where you live.   Most homes in Southern US have central AC.  A window unit for more cooling capacity is pretty cheap and a DIY project.  A guestimate (depends on inside/outside temps and unit efficiency) is that it takes about 30% more energy to remove heat from the room w/ AC. 

So 1000 kWh in actual load = +300kWh more to remove AC.

Some parts of the US have <$0.07 per kWh electrical costs so it isn't that bad though.  AC on UK electrical prices?  Well that would be brutal.

Just watched your videos, pretty cool, I don't need AC because i just have one card ;D but being on a 3rd floor apartment, it gets hot in the summer, so we have one.  I love winters in general, but i am loving it now that i can open one window and cool down the place down.


Your set up, looks like it'd be pretty toasty without that AC...
