Bitcoin is a digital decentralized currency,in the sense that no government nor Central Bank has any control of its price nor value, and there abounds no regulations whatsoever in the system...

Due to the absence of regulations and it's pseudo-anonymity,its viewed as a scam by most people and nations alike, hence some nations have placed a permanent ban on the currency and stopped every cryptocurrency related activities within their shores.

Other reasons abounds why nations are trying to crack down on the system, as its viewed as a direct threat to Fiat and it's safe, secure, transparent and quick transactions is much more attractive, hence most governments do not want such competition with their national currencies..

Bitcoin definitely is purely Legal ,but due to the aforementioned reasons you'll do well to confirm if it's legal in your Locale ,you could surf the internet for that information ,as I'm not privy to it,i can't really tell you if it is Legal over where you are..

Despite the fact that it's legal, the system is also used for fraudulent activities by scammers so you'll have to be careful on it,
Make sure you keep you private keys "private"
Store investments in reliable exchanges(Beware of fake exchanges)
Beware of phishing SCAM
Always use a reliable bitcoin wallet(Hard wallet)

What is the bitcoin status in your country? I think if your government is not giving any statement, then you can use bitcoin and you can try to make money from bitcoin. It depends on each country, and I think some of the countries still not allow bitcoin to be used but the other country uses bitcoin for legal. Perhaps, you need to discuss this with your friends from the same city so you can know what the situations in your country.

Bitcoin is definitely a legal currency, but its legality ultimately depends on your country of origin/residence...

Few countries have actually cracked down on the system and stopped all its activities by their citizens and within their jurisdiction

So try finding out if your country is one of them,if not then you're free to start trading on the bitcoin and other crptocurrencies

Good luck

Well, some countries don't accept the use of bitcoin for exchange of goods and services. Meaning in these countries, the use of bitcoin is illegal. But looking at the general scope of the world population, majority of countries use bitcoin and they have not tag bitcoin as illegal. In such countries, Bitcoin can be say to be legal to use, since there are no regulations regarding not to use Bitcoin for transaction.

There has been a lot of discussion on this topic, maybe you did not find the same topic because there may be many topics discussed in this forum. However, this is good for reminding us of the bitcoin's negligence in each country. Of course, each country has different rules regarding bitcoin, some are legal, some are just suggesting, even there are countries that openly reject bitcoin. Although some country views differ from bitcoin, still any government cannot stop bitcoin.

Hey this question should contain which country you're from, as each country views bitcoins separately some view it as a currency, while some have banned it. While on it's own Bitcoin is neither legal nor illegal, the only thing you should keep in mind are the taxation aspect, your government regulations regarding this, and whether your bank will accept money from exchanges.

My advise is to do a quick google search something like Bitcoins rules in --- country, or taxation of bitcoins in my country you should get your answer there.

On my opinion bitcoin is a generalized type of currency that every nationality in the world may have. It is a private and secured way of storing an amount of money in a simple system of crypto currency. Therefore it must be legalized but limited to those who understands the use of it evidently.

Well crypto currency if it is legal or not will depend on the country in which he is the citizen of as few countries have made it illegal. Only countries which have either made it legal or under review where you can actually trade else you can fall under some of the law of your country and can get prison or penalty as your country law states.

The growth of bitcoin and the legality of bitcoin have something in similar. If a certain government accept crypto as legal there will be a growing interest among people to get into it and try it out for the risk takers. Similarly there will be a boost in the local trading of coins and there will be a pump in the market. This will also be associated with some increase in frequency of scams using crypto and FUD news from shady agencies.

In some countries Bitcoin has become a legal payment instrument, and in some countries Bitcoin is banned. As far as I know, there are three state attitudes regarding the legality of Bitcoin. first, a country accepts Bitcoin as a legal payment instrument. here everyone can use Bitcoin directly. Secondly, a country's Neutral Attitude towards Bitcoin, meaning that the State does not prohibit its people from playing Bitcoin and also does not recommend it, meaning it is up to each individual. And the third is, the State prohibits Bitcoin, here every activity related to Bitcoin is not permitted by the government.

We have huge number of bitcoin users from varies countries. Either their country do accept bitcoin or not the citizens do accept it and find ways to multiple bitcoin and other altcoins. Just derive the positive points from what you know. Make it as a practice. My nation has not yet revealed if it accepts bitcoin or denies. According to the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, as of 2013, using bitcoin to purchase well-natured goods and services is not illegal. However, those who mine bitcoins and trade them for traditional currency or operate exchanges on which bitcoins are bought and sold are labeled “money transmitters” and could be subject to special laws that govern that type of activity. To date, those laws have rarely, if ever, been enforced to crackdown against bitcoin use.

Which county are you in now? It depends where and how you use Bitcoin.  Check your country regulations about Bitcoin, because in other country they banned Btc and other countries are becoming the Bitcoin hub. I am very fortunate that I live in a country very open to idea of blockchain as long will not use it for illegal activities.

In each country, it has its own policies, especially in finance, and bitcoin is one of the pros and cons in each country, anonymous ownership makes the government lose track of it, but this makes many countries that do not bother, so in this case the government do not prohibit and also do not allow. All risks in bitcoin are left to the holder.

In my opinion, It depends on your country if they declared that bitcoin is banned or not. If your country do not have any statement that is banned then it means that its not yet legal and not banned just continue what you are doing because Government letting you to do it. Many people are relying to cryptocurrency and they will do anything to work for it and as long as the government do not have any side comment for it just continue.

Bitcoin is legal or not depends on the country, where you live and how the government responds to bitcoin. In my country I forbid but I am still learning about this, but the government does not forbid its people to learn bitcoin, so many people still play in bitcoin at their own risk, whatever happens, the law cannot help.

The legality of bitcoin depends on who you are, and what you’re doing with it.

There are three main categories of bitcoin stakeholder. Someone may fall under more than one of these categories, and each category has its own legal considerations.

I just wonder for governments that have received cryptocurrency, are they responsible for all the negative things experienced by most users such their asset were stolen? cause till now I haven't found an information that publishes about the issue.

Also agree with you, there was no bitcoin function that is contrary to government regulations. Bitcoin is like a gold or a digital currency that is not dangerous and there is no negative function that will have a big impact on someone who has used it or against a government that adopted it.

Only few countries fully legalized bitcoin like Japan but others allowed their people to buy and sell bitcoins without being legalizing it. Some governments may finally allow cryptocurrencies in their countries if a court ruling favors owning virtual currencies. China is reportedly easing its restrictions on bitcoin transaction when one of their court ruled in favor of bitcoin. Chinese citizens and merchants have the right to trade and own cryptocurrencies, according to a verdict reached in their arbitration court.

Digital currency allows users to remain anonymous when executing transactions. In addition to being a decentralized cryptocurrency with no central authority detached from any government, so users wants it's be legal, but without KYC. Ya it is true that in India bitcoin and cryptocurrency trading and using with bank is banned and who ever are trading their bank accounts are blocked. RBI have given strict instructions to bank to close the account who are dealing in cryptocurrency. Even exchanges have stopped the fiat currency trading and some exchanges have shifted their working office to abroad where cryptocurrency is legal.

Their is a legal war going between cryptocurrency exchange and RBI in regards to legalize bitcoin as it the right of the people to chose which is good or bad for them and government cannot force them to stop using it. As India is a democracy country every Indian citizen have their own rights to do anything until it is not illegal or scamming others.

Well, some countries don't accept the use of bitcoin for exchange of goods and services. Meaning in these countries, the use of bitcoin is illegal. But looking at the general scope of the world population, majority of countries use bitcoin and they have not tag bitcoin as illegal. In such countries, Bitcoin can be say to be legal to use, since there are no regulations regarding not to use Bitcoin for transaction.
the status of bitcoin is still not yet widely determined about its legality, but as long as our country only prohibits using bitcoin for buying and selling transactions of goods, bitcoin is still categorized as legal goods even though its status as assets or goods is like property, so bitcoin is not a prohibited item and only as a virtual currency or future money.

in countries that do not recognize bitcoin usually only prohibits bitcoin from being used to transact or to buy goods, but we can still do treding and we can still buy bitcoin even though as a future asset, we can still buy and sell bitcoin because of its bitcoin global and online so we just have to buy in a country that does legalize bitcoin, because we no longer need to use the services of a conventional bank or a state bank.

As far as I know, not all of countries, some of them legalized bitcoin, some don't, and the rest don't legalized it nor banned bitcoin. But, yes. when it's legal, taxes are there to be paid, since the regulator needs money too.  :P
So, if people wondering whether bitcoin legal or illegal, it depends on where she/he is, isn't it? So, it's important to find out the status in your own country.

Bitcoin is actually legal, in some countries it is already viewed as a legal program that produces money. Unfortunately, some country look at it differently. In different places far and wide, the legality of Bitcoin is seen in an unexpected way, yet generally it remains moderately safe to use as long as it isn't attached to illegal buys or exercises. Numerous nations have issued explanations showing that bitcoin and other computerized monetary standards are not managed and don't exist as formally authorized monetary forms: a status that could put clients in danger yet would not make them abuse any laws. Bitcoin is through and through unlawful in a few nations, for example, Iceland.

Contingent upon where and how you use bitcoin, it is vital to stay cutting-edge on the most recent controls concerning the advanced money. As laws change crosswise over fringes, overseeing bodies and, progressively, as the stage picks up fame, inquiries regarding bitcoin's lawfulness will keep on being raised.

the original plan was created as bitcoin as the future currency, but many people today are starting to change the bitcoin function from a currency to a commodity, which is nothing but to trade, not to make a payment, so let's change the method now our view of bitcoin, namely as a means of payment, many countries have facilitated bitcoin users as a payment tool, but bitcoin owners who don't understand things like this, basically bitcoin is only digital money so it doesn't violate any law, so bitcoin is legal .

Actually, Bitcoin is not yet fully legal, but some countries have made it legal. In the case of Bitcoin discussion every day it is becoming popular. And the day is not too far when Bitcoin is completely legal. As all of us knows it is, the king of all coins and through this can make life even better.
legal or not, this will not be a problem in trading, as long as bitcoin does not violate the law, so we are still free to trade bitcoin over an internet connection, because on the internet there will be no borders, so that usually makes it a problem if we exchange bitcoin, and we transfer into a local bank this can be a problem, because usually a large amount raises the suspicion of law enforcement.

bitcoin before being exchanged for fiat currencies in the digital world, or the internet world is a borderless world, we can be sure we can trade without using our home country, so everything in cyberspace is legal, but after we exchange bitcoin into the country of origin of the currency we, this is what starts making bitcoin traders start to intersect with the systems of each user's country, but as long as we trade in the virtual world as long as it's legal, bitcoin is not touched by any law.

Actually, Bitcoin is not yet fully legal, but some countries have made it legal. In the case of Bitcoin discussion every day it is becoming popular. And the day is not too far when Bitcoin is completely legal. As all of us knows it is, the king of all coins and through this can make life even better.
the question is legal in which country? , if we see globally bitcoin is legal, so ownership is not a legal problem, but about its use in different countries, some countries facilitate users of bitcoin to be used as a tool for exchanging goods, but in some countries it prohibits bitcoin from being used as payment tools, so Bitcoin's original status is legal. but what distinguishes the use of different status, depending on what we use in which country.

Bitcoin legal or not it totally depends upon the country which you live. Because many countries now banned  bitcoin, at the same time some countries allowed bitcoin for their people with some limitations. In few countries bitcoin is either legal nor illegal but people used bitcoin and traders also done trading. So in your country it is legal means then you use it there is no issues in that.

It should be legal everywhere, but because the negative side is still too visible.. it is as if it's prohibited and dangerous because it will pose a certain risk in the efforts made. Actually, everything can turn out to be more positive if indeed it's more supported and more accepted in various countries.

Bitcoin is not a country specific currency because no one can ban it . no country can ban the internet  . sure they can a certain site that is related to crypto and bitcoin but we can still access those sites using a little trick  .

bitcoin is legal because its only a currency and it does help people to live more easier  .   its not a kind of drug that can harm people .  its not also a criminal that scam people .

Bitcoin is legal in those countries where it is not explicitly prohibited by specific regulations. As a general rule, any business activity is allowed if there is no special prohibition regarding it. National laws may contain other features of the application of this general rule. In any case, everyone should be interested in and know the current laws of their state.

Good thing to know if OP research on google if their country restricted or not in cryptocurrency especially the main coins(bitcoin).
But as of now, we do not consider Bitcoin is legal since most likely governments worldwide are not friendly on Bitcoin, they are afraid that Bitcoin will be their next big competitor when it comes financial savings and probably at that time Banks will bankrupt.
That's why we are waiting for those implementations, the ETF, and BAKKT to make Bitcoin looks like having legitimately and have mass adoptions.

Maybe it would be better if you really have to join and ask a forum in your country about the legal or not. because it is clear that all countries will have very different interests and rules and are determined separately, not necessarily the same as in your country.
But if seen from its development, almost many countries have legalized it. There are some that are not legalized to be used as legal tender, but for other transactions it is permitted. so that you don't get into trouble it's better not to hesitate to ask questions in forums in your country. so you can follow with no fear.

..according to the dictionary, Bitcoin is a digital currency in which a record of transactions is maintained and new units of currency are generated by the computational solution of mathematical problems, and which operates independently of a central bank.

..thus, Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group of people using the name Satoshi Nakamoto and released as open-source software in 2009. Bitcoins are created as a reward for a process known as mining.

..the inventions of Bitcoins gives oppurtunity to many people to gain wealth because Bitcoin have reach its peak..in my humbly opinion, Bitcoin is legal, many countries accepted bitcoin as mode of transactions, and they do legalized Bitcoin and threated it as an asset..for me, the thing that making Bitcoin as illegeal is that many other people uses Bitcoin in a wrong way,,thus they uses Bitcoin to cover the illegal activities they are doing, they are also uses bitcoin for personal interest in deceiving people in order to steal some other's bitcoin,,this is the cause why some other people threated bitcoin as illegal..but overall,,for me,,Bitcoin is Legal.

I agree with the above opinion, it is better for you to enter a forum in your home country and ask about legal or not in the forum. because we can ensure that it is more actual than you requested here in general. because each country's criteria are clearly different, but broadly by looking at its development, it can be ascertained that many countries legalize bitcoin, because we know that this development is indeed very advanced, bitcoin is clear and certain has been known in many countries and it is appropriate that the state must follow about developments about bitcoin things, if not left behind by technological developments by other countries.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that can conduct transactions between countries, both in countries that legalize bitcoin and those that prohibit bitcoin. The system being carried out is peer to peer and decentralized, so that even though being in a country that prohibits bitcoin transactions can still be done because everything happens online.
In developed countries bitcoin is legal, but in many countries that are still poor bitcoin is illegal. So that bitcoin users are divided in some established countries, because the community and its equipment are adequate. In poor countries it is considered illegal for fear of disrupting financial transactions because bitcoin cannot be monitored.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that is decentralized and does not have centralized storage so that bitcoin is not managed by any person or government. So that to find out whether legal or not depends on each government in a country. Because to say bitcoin is legal or not depends on each government and certainly every country has a different policy. There are countries that ban bitcoin for certain reasons but there are also countries that allow bitcoin. Even though there are still countries that ban bitcoin, I am sure that in the future all countries will legalize bitcoin because in the future digital currencies cannot be rejected and continue to grow so that all countries must adjust.

From this, what is a concern is where you are, whether it is a country that prohibits or allows bitcoin to be used, it will greatly affect bitcoin, both for trade and investment.

Bitcoin and another cryptocurrency are now in varying degrees legal in one hundred and eleven states. This is already a rather impressive figure. Bitcoin is illegal when its circulation is directly prohibited by the state. There are about a dozen of such states. If we compare the number of states where the cryptocurrency is legalized against those where it is prohibited so far, the situation looks pretty optimistic.

While some countries are still banning cryptocurrencies, other regions building a legal ground for it. Currently, the 5th AML Directive by the European Parliament is going into force soon. It will prompt the European-based companies that deal with cryptocurrencies (e.g., brokerages, exchanges, etc.) to do more extensive due diligence on their customers, as well as avail of blockchain forensic tools to monitor transactions for possible illicit activities.

Even though regulations of certain level exist now, the new directive will tighten the current legal environment at the expense of crypto-related companies, providing more trust and stability to crypto economies and promoting transparency in crypto space. Most likely, bans will eventually be lifted and some degree of regulations will be applied instead. (more here: https://blog.coingate.com/2019/02/aml-compliance-bitcoin-adoption/) Hopefully, it will be done without interfering with technological progress and helping to accelerate adoption of digital assets both in terms of investment, business and regular use, just like it is done now.

If they are converting it for fiat cash that time some mentioned charges are there need to pay as taxation as per your government's law. So before use BTC you may need to sneak more about that.  ;)

What you say does happen at this time, many policies of a country do it differently. some legitimize crypto to be used as a tool for transactions, some also do not recognize it as a legitimate payment instrument, but may only be a means of exchange, and some do not recognize it at all. stay back to each country treats.

The legality or illegality of Bitcoin is very simple to decipher. To countries that find the use or mining of Bitcoin offensive and banned it, it's illegal but to countries which haven't made any incriminating statement banning Bitcoin it isn't illegal. Let's take my country for example, the government is playing dumb and acting like it doesn't know about the existence of Bitcoin after alerting the citizenry of the risk of investing in it in 2016 but didn't outlaw it. What that meant was that the citizens could invest and trade it but at their own risk. It isn't illegal with this. It's been three years since then and those in my country are reaping the dividends of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin/cryptos might be already legal on your country and the govt's already accepted and legalize it but still not all banks are going  to show their support because some banks still thinks that bitcoin is not good for thier business since we all know that bitcoin is also a currency and can also be a store of value better than banks  and better than a local currency.

Whether bitcoin is legal or not depends on your jurisdiction.

While some countries like Finland, Cyprus or Australia are really open to Bitcoin, some other countries like Vietnam, China or Columbia are totally against them.

There is very interesting article about this topic. Check it here:

I think that every country will not be the same and have its own ways that might be different, because in any case the priority of the interests of a country's authority is determined by themselves to be able to accept and determine bitcoin.

I think Bitcoin is not legit in some countries but in some countries, Bitcoin is legit and use for all purchases. Also, there are lots of legit Bitcoin mining website and with the help of that website, you can earn free bitcoin. There is some legit website like Multimining.website (https://multimining.website/). In countries like U.S.A, Canada, Australia, China and Russia you can purchase any product with the help of Bitcoin.
That's right what you say, that legitimate bitcoin is based on that country in regulating bitcoin. because many countries have advanced and legalized bitcoin and can be used as legitimate transactions. but not a few countries still have not accepted and prohibited as legitimate transactions. so that you do not become confused you better enter the forum in your country and can ask there about bitcoin and the policies that have been made.

In my country it's already recognize, but speaking of adoption, the adoption is still very low.
I would be happy if bitcoin will be acceptable in stores and shops in our country but now, it's not happening yet, but I'm really optimistic in the long run there will be good progress as I know this is a better payment method compared to what is popular now which is centralized.

most of what you experience with bitcoin seems almost to occur in most developing countries. does not prohibit any transaction but is not permitted as a legitimate payment transaction tool. it still takes time to be able to adapt to the development of advanced crypto.

Bitcoins' legality depends on the government of the country. This is the best answer so far, though you shouldn't worry about the legality if you are living in a free country because most free government doesn't have that much qualms and most of them hasn't noticed it yet and I think that it is a good thing. The only problem that you will face when you are doing business with bitcoin is that you either do a money laundering and that is about anything that can be implicate on you because most of the authorities are not yet creating a policy to regulate bitcoin so we are in the safe side right now.

In my opinion, there will be very big problems with the legalization of cryptocurrency in totalitarian countries, where governments, with the support of the head of state, will prevent the introduction of cryptocurrency. In such states, the government always wants to control the cash flows of its citizens, while the cryptocurrency will be a real threat to the national currency, which the government always uses for its manipulations, increasing the volume of paper notes. At the same time, the government always justifies its actions by the fact that it is trying to fight the illegal turnover of prohibited funds, which may be bought or sold by someone using cryptocurrency. But it seems to me that the main thing is that Bitcoin is recognized in all countries as a digital asset, with appropriate legislation that regulates the turnover of cryptocurrency funds, and people themselves decide whether to use cryptocurrency or not.

Bitcoin was created to solve the problem of old banking system and centralization. This virtual currency make transaction fast secure and no any third party or government is involve during transaction. In most of the case it has it's advantage more than disadvantage. In some country those advantage are used properly by people and in some country those advantage are use very badly. Due to decentralized currency no any government can track the people and transaction. So this is aloso legal and illegal.

Central bank money competition / and the first working system for electronic micro payments - cause open public ledger to see what is the 'truth' and keep ppl honest

here you go - nothing illegal, also cause it was not sold in an ICO like all the other coins did, that made them securities

and nothing illegal until ppl (soft) forked the protocol playing Satoshi Dev 2.0

Illegal or legal, it doesn't change that fact that bitcoin is still very useful.

We don't have a universal law on how to rule bitcoin, some country does not like it while some like it, so it could be illegal to a certain country but it's legal to the others, let's just choose, we are lucky if we are bitcoin enthusiast and we live in a country where the government are supporting bitcoin by regulating it.

To be honest, I believe that it is definitely impossible to answer whether BTC is legal. On the one hand, it is kind of legal, since many countries do not prohibit its use. On the other hand, if we talk about BTC as money, then it is not legal, since there are countries that prohibit the use of surrogate money. Based on this, it is impossible to answer 100% whether BTC is legal or not. The most you can do is find out in the country where you live, how they treat BTC at the legislative level. As far as I know, there are still discussions in the world about what cryptocurrencies are and how to identify them in the world system. Moreover, every time something changes in this regard, which means you need to learn more information.

It depends on your country because there are countries where bitcoin is legal but there are also countries that are not legalized but they allow the community to use it as a means of payment and as an alternative source of income.

If it is illegal in your country, unfortunately, you can not use it freely because the authorities will arrest you.

It's not an alternative source of income because bitcoin is just a currency, or a payment system, what give you the income is your labor, the exact job your do or when you are trading and you are profitable. I only believe it as an alternative currency but not an alternative source of income.

Bitcoin is legal where the state at the level of legislation has fixed and explained what it is and how. If you live in North Korea, it will most likely be banned. Although it may be vice versa. In our time, it is difficult to guess where the legalization will be, and where, on the contrary, will tighten all the screws and it will become gloomy and dark. One day the cryptocurrency market will stabilize and take shape in the same way as all the markets where a person played a role. Regulation will grow. - in my opinion.

If you are trading this one story, if you are somehow earning income from the world of cryptocurrency it will probably be a different story. The main thing is the tax jurisdiction of which country applies to you at a particular moment. It is very easy to find out if you read the legislation in your country on the topic of taxes and in general aimed at regulating cryptocurrency. You can write a simple query on a search engine like google and ask the same question there. You will receive all articles and answers at once and find the answer to the question. If you do not trust search engines for some reason - just get the advice of a qualified lawyer - even though it will cost money.

It is strange that this topic still provokes such discussions. Everything always depends strictly on one factor - the jurisdiction where you are engaged in cryptocurrency. If this is China, this is one thing, if Russia is another, USA is the third. Everywhere there is different legislation, different approaches from the state and tax authorities. So why then ask such an abstract question to which each of the citizens of these countries will answer in his own way and will be right?

Why do they ask?
Because these days it seems far too many people do not know how to think and formulate a proper question to do an internet search using a search engine. They just want a binary yes or no to questions that any person with even just a little life experience should know must include "it all depends on..." The question rates right up there with "Is Bitcoin still profitable?..."

I thought you are right about the question " Is Bitcoin still profitable?.." and that is all depends the market. Bitcoin can be legal or ilegal depends to all users and the reason what if bitcoin created is to spread this crypto as a profitable asset but it depends like you said.
