The economist George Gilder believes the four biggest corporations (Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google) will be replaced by "cryptocosmic" companies.

Who do you think they will be, and which industries will they dominate?

Um. I hate to be negative. The concept of amazon, apple, microsoft or google being dethroned by crypto alt products seems unlikely if not impossible.

Start with microsoft whose flagship product is windows operating system. Try to imagine a scenario where Windows 10 is made obsolete by an operating system based on blockchain. Its not a scenario which easily fits into the fabric of the space time continuum.

Try apple next. How likely are ipads, iphones, macs or other apple products to be replaced by hardware or software utilizing a blockchain? Eh. Probably. Never.

If you want a scenario where bitcoin or crypto might thrive, it might be better to look at the limitations of fiat money or banks as institutions--things that actually do compete with bitcoin/crypto for market share, if to an extremely limited degree.

Well we will never know what will happen in the next ten years but most probably it will happen as blockchain is the future. However if these companies will adapt change and crypto for sure they will not be dethroned.

Let me give an example which is nokia, they didn't change their concept as competitors changed to touch screen phones so what happened? I think all of you know what it is. So in any industry if you will stick to one action plan nothing will happen.

I agree with you man. This is just impossible to happen because crypto currencies are not really having that much use as the real world products are having. The real market trends created by products and services that are actually existing and getting used by the people for day to day life. Now all the ventures that you have listed up there are the biggest in what they are doing. They have a business model which is now has become fail proof because of many reasons. One of the valid reason is, they are playing monopoly in the market and virtually forcing people to use their own products and services. This way they are keeping their customers attached forever.

Thats not possible for sure. These companies have been established four to five decades ago and has taken huge hard work to achieve the position at which they are toady. I guess with the time they have also developed themselves with keen attention over the details and what the world needs. Only these changes that they have made so for has gotten themselves into the position that they are in today. Without this no business or entity out there can grow so fast and so vast really. How many people does even know about the crypto currency with full fledge ? May be very less % of people on the earth knows about it fully. So its hard to say that they will even dethrone the Amazon, apple etc.

I think no-one can surpass Google, but everything is possible.

I don't think such a company will be surpassed, or only one of them will be surpassed. Such big companies will partner with cryptocurrencies, and they are now very capable.

I think some of the big names in 10 years are:

VeChain - Industry
Waves - dApps
Utrust - Payments


But who knows! Maybe we get some overpowered idea soon which makes actual crypto look boring  :o

The future crypto giants,who will out-rank the big 4 of the online world are yet to be created.
I don't think that any of the crypto projects in existence has the competitive advantage to become the "crypto-Google" or the "crypto-Apple" of the next decade.

Coinbase and Digital Currency Group will surely be included in the top 10. I have a few others in mind but up to say overtake Amazon and co. I don't think any has a potential right now. Maybe in 20 years. The big firms won't be replaced, they will change their business model. There are many companies that need to make changes to their business to still be relevant to their markets. Doubt that a crypto company will overtake the big companies now especially if they themselves are also using blockchain in their company which means they already have a head start in the race. Also there is really no type of industry who will win the race, right now we are seeing e-commerce and mobile phone companies taking the top spot but the winner here will be the one who will be innovative and will also be taking advantage of the technology that will be common be use in the future.

As of now ots hard to speculate because cryptocurrencies  is still young but the time come some companies will invest, and use the technology fo this kind of online business, because as we know blockchain technology is more economical, agile and fast.

The companies that are thriving in the market will always be the ones that are in trend and as of now these companies are the ones that are thriving so what Hydrogen is telling is very true and un less that people will change that trend then they will still be on the top. So if the social media or the internet will have a great down trend on the users then other companies will surely take the top.

I think Cryptocurrency can not take over such big businesses. They all have their own functions and services. Blockchain technology only helps those companies in the field of business and will definitely increase sales. I think blockchain technology will soon serve those businesses.

So far we have seen at least hundreds of "cryptocosmic" startups and nothing ground breaking has been accomplished yet. On the other hand, although Microsoft have been exploring Blockchain for quite some time, we saw this year, the rest of the top tech companies, Facebook, Amazon, Google, and Apple taking Blockchain seriously. It has to be seen when or how these dominant tech companies are going to use Blockchain to create new opportunities.

As far as cryptocosmic companies, if I take Blockchain/decentralization/Dapps/DAO (more innovations to come) as the basis then in the next ten years, maybe we would see some new decentralized ecommerce startups/existing ones like OpenBazaar capturing some real market share, but I think with all the data breaches/security concerns, social media would be one of the major sectors where crypto startups would compete.

I think that you're asking the wrong question here.

I think it's quite unlikely that any one of the tech giants will be able to be replaced in terms of market capitalisation on the leaders chart any time soon. Even though crypto mining companies may be large in size, their operations are honestly still quite minuscule compared to these companies.

But there is a real possibility that the market cap of bitcoin itself is going to eclipse one of these company's market capitalisation very soon. I don't know if that's an accurate measure of success, but I do think that it's possible and will probably happen at one stage.

I truly believe this statement! However, I don't think we have such potential projects in place in the crypto sphere yet! The free market rule and the future market dynamics will create the next leader but it is impossible to think of any project now. Blockchain technology is still at a very nascent stage and a lot more research and development is needed to thrive. Even though there are few projects with really innovative idea, but the market response is still not fathomable!

However, even though I am not able to point out any particular project with huge potential, but I think, the e-commerce and data security industry will dominate the future internet based businesses and blockchain can have huge application in these sectors.

Well, the author compared oil companies with software companies, showing how the economic paradigm shifted, and then drawing parallels. So, it means that he thinks that crypto companies will not replace those companies, but will dethrone them by their marketcap positions. But I agree that this seems highly unlikely, aside from Coinbase there isn't even that much big crypto companies, and crypto is different from software, it doesn't need companies that make new crypto, it's just a medium of exchange.

This is too overrated to think that those big companies are going to wipe with the blockchain technology. Come to think about of what they have made and done then compare the blockchain technology to them, they were way more in a different level compared to any cryptocurrencies.

The big different is that cryptocurrency is a digital money where like Apple or Microsoft they make software and hardware then how can you compare a physical item to digital. It's just like fiat versus crypto currency or banks versus the blockchain.

Google or any of the companies you listed will accept to be replaced by a "cryptocurrency company".
If you mean a company that uses cryptocurrencies instead of Fiat succeeds to make huge income making it one of the biggest companies, then do you think Google will miss this opportunity to adopt crypto and attract more customers!! I don't think so.

I hope Google and Apple will be the leaders for the crypto market, I see Google's seriousness about this, namely reopening the crypro ads on all services that Google uses. this is a good step for Google, Crypto and also Crypto users

It sounds like he's not considering the underlying economics. Amazon is increasing market share at lightning speed including brick-and-mortar markets where crypto isn't relevant. Apple and Microsoft build products that are ubiquitous in everyday life and business operations. Most businesses use Windows infrastructure..... What "cryptocurrency application" has even been conceived to replicate what Windows does, and why would anyone need a "cryptocosmic company" to produce it?

He seems to be speculating off little more than the fact that tech companies disrupted the economic status quo in the late 90s. Doesn't mean it's going to happen again anytime soon.

From what we've seen so far, companies like Bitmain probably can. Crypto's explosive growth is probably mostly responsible in their explosion in wealth, but we all know crypto also has a fuckton of room to grow. If crypto companies can grow with it, I can see this happening.

Some random ICO company could also potentially reach the top, provided they actually put out something revolutionary and genuinely useful for the masses. We haven't seen anything remotely close to that though, so it may not even be possible lol.

As much as we cannot tell what the future holds, I doubt if we will ever get to see this happen. These are big corporations that are so much grounded and in the long run, I do not believe there would be a point they will not advance into the integration of blockchain technology somehow, so in a way, I still believe they have an edge when it comes to being fully grounded.

There are so many things in that article that actually does not seem plausible, I do not need to start reiterating it as I am sure it is obvious, but one thing is that these companies will always have a stand unless they just want to lag behind and relax in their comfort zone which is what I believe will not even happen, considering they have always been innovators and they will keep being.

The companies like Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Google is currently controlling more and more our needs in everyday lives, they own our data and everything around it.
The cryptocurrency have to go way much ahead from the current situation and there is no middle ground when it comes to cryptocurrencies, it is going to either boom or bust in future.

That is how our world changing!  And technology rules the world.  I have seeing that in years to come bitcoin and cryptocurrencies will be discuss as the determination factors in finance and politics.  That is why we should do all we could in other to develop interest in cryptocurrencies.  I believe that in ten to twenty years to come bitcoin,  ethereum and ripple are going to be corporations that has high market capitalization. 

I don't mean to be critic but this statement will never come true, I do like bitcoins, blockchain and all but no company using these technologies is capable of dethroning the giants. When you say crypto as a whole has huge market cap, let me remind you cryptos is broken up into various exchanges, people and institutions these are not one party but multiple parties.

Also how can you imagine a day without using google or having a iPhone but not using it, I don't think I'm up for blockchain phones where my data is stored publicly for all to see.

I can say coinbase might just make it in to 20 or top 10 but that's it, nothing more than that.

I agree, no company using these technologies is capable of dethroning the giants of our current reality.

But, new technology is creating another reality, a virtual reality. We can already see this in how everyone is addicted to the virtual reality devices called iPhones, or smartphones. It's more important than physical reality because of all the cheap dopamine rushes they provide.

This could potentially lead to us not using any phones at all. Many tech geeks speculate that AR will replace phones until VR technology catches up, in which we'll be communicating in ways never seen before and essentially living in a virtual reality instead of just observing it.

I agree with what most people said here and at the moment it is hard to see that happening.
You mentioned Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google. All these are giants already. Although Bitcoin or maybe Ethereum are giants in the crypt world you dont really need to have them in order to use the services and products of the companies you mentioned. You can just use Fiat like before crypto came to life.
It is hard to imagine life without everyday use of Microsoft or Google - but I cant say the same about any altcoin or Bitcoin for that matter.

Crypto companies have a maximum because they are not neither buying other companies nor getting any bigger quicker which would really hold them back compared to fiat companies. Say coinbase wants to overtake amazon or apple or whatever, coinbase can get big as much as the market gets big and as long as the volume gets big, otherwise they have no other profit sources to take. Whereas facebook for example can get bigger by just purchasing whatsapp and instagram, that makes them really bigger by just existing because that takes the marketcap bigger.

Apple could get bigger by just selling the same phone with a new name and keep making money constantly. Hence if you really believe coinbase could overtake (or any other crypto) they need to find more and more income sources or reason to get their marketcap bigger.

Purely based on assumption, but there is a good chance that one of these companies, if not all of them, would get gigantic by getting associated with crypto or blockchain technology. Crypto market is a huge one with immense potentials and no big corporation would just sit around foolishly. Take for example, Mircosoft has already made their move and several project names are on the air already.

It will be hard for any crypto company to dethrone any of these giants. But you never know what is going to happen in the future. It will be interesting to see if somehow they can manage to do so.

Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google are very big companies. They are not easy to topple down. In events when a crypto company gets cloes, one of the companies might even incorporate it into their company to stay atop of their game.

In my opinion I do not think crypto companies can overthrow these giants. Their products cannot be replaced with blockchain or any crypto on that matter. But we will see the use of blockchain by these companies for its vast network.

That will take a crazy while before any of these companies could be replaced by any crypto company. Then again, if crypto currency is widely used, i think these companies would then in turn become crypto companies themselves. Let's wait a few more years and see how much crypto currency is accepted.

Amazon stands with $995billion, Google has a market capitalization of $900 billion in July 2018 and Bitcoin back in July 26 crossed a whooping figure of $300 billion. But Amazon was launched back in July 1995 which means almost as many as 23 years ago.

Google was founded in September 4, 1998 which means as much as 19 years ago roughly. It has been just a decade that Bitcoin has been in the market. From these figures, we can say that Google has the fastest growth rate over time but the IT specialists are of the view that in future Bitcoin will leave behind all these markets.

One of the companies that might challenge some of these companies for the top spots, could be Coinbase. They have huge support in the US and they are far ahead of it's competitors at the moment. If they do not change their business model like Circle did, then they might take one of the top spots, when this goes mainstream.

OpenBazaar could also take one of the top spots, if they can make their service a bit more user-friendly and if they can target the users that got burnt by all of these centralized ecommerce sites.

IT companies and Crypto currency companies are very similar operations, so the fight for the top spots will be fun to watch.  ;)

Obviously we will never know since we cannot see the future anyway, but one thing I know for sure, is that we cannot just start all of a sudden seeing new crypto cosmic companies as it was so much called in the article to start replacing the likes of Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google).

Come on! These are companies that have made name for themselves, and it will not even take them slight second to see where they can brace up with competition and be able to come up with several innovations within the blockchain to even make them bigger. One way or the other, I believe that would be a hard thing to come by.

I think there should be none by now because I think crypto isn't still not popular to all people in the world, but when things gets done with crypto everything about crypto will run the world.

I think decentralized marketplaces hold a lot of value, and I would definitely use them (both to buy and sell) once they become more user-friendly and secure..

Even Amazon still censors and restricts products and they do hike up costs.. The average joe could save a lot of money and literally any product could become accessible and available at the best possible price. Open Bazaar is good. Virternity might be worth paying attention to as well. (Supposed to come out in the next couple of months.)

It's all about the business model, not crypto, as such. If new crypto startups offer more effective solutions than existing giants, but they will have every chance of success. But I would not hurry with conclusions. Do not forget that the companies mentioned are technological and always keep abreast of new technologies.

True, these giants wont able to sustain their spot on the top if they arent capable on developing as the years goes by. Crypto projects do have the probability to be on the top but i dont
really expect that they would easily overtake those existing ones on a short span of time but who knows if globally a certain project would be adopted on full scale then it might be possible
but i dont really think up too much because it would really be hard to beat up.
