I see that many of ranked member use custom hats as their avatars especially seen on “Wall Observer” thread. They look quite nice if background of the post has the same color as the background of avatar. While they are displayed on other color hats look… still not bad but... a little bit worse ;-)


Of course it’s only my opinion but if you also like more the second one you can change your avatar in less than one minute… Probably many of you know that it could be done very easily but for those who don’t I made this short tutorial:
I used free GIMP software to prepare it which you can find here: https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

First step: Open your avatar image in gimp software

Second step: Go to the Layers – Brushes tab and click right mouse button on the image name or image miniature and select „Add Alpha Channel” just like on the image below (If this option is not active - it means that Alpha Channel is already added so you can go to the third step):


Third step: Go to the Toolbox tab select „Fuzzy Select Tool” and click left mouse button on the image – on the background you will see that your hat (or other avatar) has been selected like on the image:


Fourth step:  Now you can just press delete on the keyboard (@Foxpup thanks for making it even easier) and go to fifth step, or you can delete background manually by selecting „Eraser Tool” from the Toolbox and than with eraser clean whole background around the hat (or other avatar) like on the image:


Fifth step: Now all you have to do is to save this image to the file: Go to File menu → Export As than choose from Select File Type „PNG image” and press „Export” button. Than you’ll see another window you have to be sure that checkbox near „Save color values from transparent pixels” is checked if so press „Export”  button.


THAT’S IT!

If you don't see the change after uploading new avatar you can clear your cache. Sometimes it takes few hour to see the change especially if your previous avatar was also *.png file...

your hat looks like shit, only homer can make the hats.

MAN i don't want to show you a better hat! - just a short way to erase the background what make homer's hats look even better!

I like GIMP. Thanks for your tutorial. I see it really useful. I love the idea you want to convey. The images with transparencies look better.

Little bit easy, but thanks for sharing. It will be so helpful for those who don't know. That's why i like this forum cause we have been familiarized with new things day by day

OMG, this hat obsession is affecting the meta too. What is all about those hats?
How the hell this even started? I gave up lurking in the Wall Observer it's almost impossible to find something there, it's like facebook, you just enter there and suddenly, half an hour gone.

BTW, good tutorial, it can apply for many different avatars, not only those crazy hats.

Photoshop will make the process more simple,you no need to erase the background using any tools in the latest version of Photoshop application,just double click the background and can fill with none to erase background by single tap.

Not everyone can afford buying Photoshop if you not gonna use it professionally (you are not suggesting to use illegal copy aren't you?).It's quite costly but GIMP is free and does the same job as Photoshop so it's the best solution.

Maybe Photoshop makses it a bit more simple but i  don't find this free solution complicated at all...

Jetty ( my black cat ) wants reindeer antlers on his hat for Christmas, but the stupid moggy wants them on the inside, so that they won't be too obvious. Maybe I'll give him a sprig of holly or something.

Everyone loves editing. However there are lots of background erasing tool that can be found throughout playstore.

The downside of using these instant editing apps, you will not learn the very basic foundation of editing. Learning Photoshop and GIMP is still the best.

It actually doesn't. In GIMP, you can make the selection transparent by just pressing Delete (assuming the layer has an alpha channel).

I don't want to be THAT guy, but better delete this comment, it can get you only in trouble. Using cracked software = Stealing digital property and it's almost the same as plagiarims.
I'm not the one to judge you for that but those things are not tolerated in my country, and you can get a really fat fine for this.
