Title: Building a small farm in my house
Post by: Princemachiavelli on December 20, 2018, 01:09:31 PM
Hello everyone.

First time posting and recently joined this amazing community. Earlier this year I started building my place and decided I want to make a small mining farm. I decided to do it in the garage by splitting it down the middle, one side will be my small farm and the other side will be where the car is parked. Any thoughts on this idea ?

Second I have upgraded by home panel to 400 amps. This is the highest allowed in the residential zoning area where I live. Would really appreciate some suggestions on what miners would be the best to go and if immersion cooling is an option as well.

Thank you for reading.

What coin(s) you want to mine ?
How much money can you spend on your mining farm ?
Immersion cooling is a option for all mining rigs, computers, asics,  if you have a extra money to spend, and you know how to do it ! Once the set up is done, its worth it for sure, but its not a easy task :)
In your half garage do you have a proper air circulation, ventilation provided for your future mining farm ?

It seems like you have some homework done already which is really nice :)!

There is not much to be said about immersion cooling - it's a rather unusual cooling method what miners would use. More frequently you see it used with ASICs than with GPUs, but in reality, there is nothing that stops using it with GPUs. You just have to know that when something needs to be repaired or looked at, I think it's rather annoying to pull out the miners from the cooling solution (dripping everywhere, get dust/trash all over them). Other than that you still need to set up a cooling solution for your liquid that you use for the immersion part.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpNERMxvPTk one of the few videos that shows a nice DIY solution on this topic :).

What miners you choose is all up to you, it depends what you want to mine. Haven't been in the mining game for some time now, but I think that GPUs and ASICs are still a way to go. There were stories told about FPGA mining as well, but don't really now the progress how far has it evolved or how flawlessly it works.

User above me already answered you on immersion cooling, I won't add anything new. But I can give you suggestions on GPUs. It also depends on if you want to stick with one coin or are handsome for others, personally I would buy Nvidia GPUs, gtx1070/1070ti and higher. They consume less energy, they don't get hot very easily and also you don't have to stick with ethereum, you have wide choice in mining. Visit whattomine.com and check every GPU's profitability at the moment.

GTX1070/1080/1080Ti have good prices at the moment. It seems to me that stagnation on cryptomarket is finished, so these cards - it is a good choice now. Recently appeared AMD RX590 is made with 12 nm process - it gives good energy efficiency, that's why it is also a not bad choice.

Thanks for the response everyone. So the half garage does have circulation I made 3 fresh air vents in the bottom and 1 medium size fan closer to the ceiling to take out the hot air from the room. In addition I also added a 240V socket in case to add the immersion cooling.

Thank you. I try to be organized and try to keep a clear vision.

But with immersion cooling I am unable to get the cooling solution. Nor am I able to build it myself. If anyone knows good places to study this topic I’m sure I can figure it out in a few weeks. Please let me know.

I have currently 2 mining rigs 6x1070ti and 6x1080ti. But for the farm I am planning to increase it to maximize the electrical panel but I am not sure the best way to do it.

So far for the farm I thought of doing 20x1080ti and 20x1070ti. The rest I would like to try ASIC mining. What do you guys think ?

Thanks once again for all the help

Just remember that if/when you implement ASICs the noise level will increase dramatically(atleast all the antminers) so you will have to consider that aswell.

Yes I am considering to use immersion cooling for the sound and efficiency of course

Congrats !!! what miners do you host in your farm ?how about your facility ?but you should notice the noise miners brings ,
Also if you are new to this filed and we are happy to provide some machines information from China , our online shop www.akminerc.com for your products selections and welcome to make any inquiry !!!

Thank you. I am unable to get on your site. Currently I am hosting 2 rigs. Both have 6 cards and are 1070ti and 1080ti

Do you have anything dealing with immersion cooling ?

I have a 20 gpu's being mostly 1070ti's and some 1070's in a longer single car garage.  I also use it as a work space and man it gets hot in there.  Even in the winter.  I am planning on making some kind of a mining rig box but I am in the early planning stages.  I was thinking a 2x4 frame with drywall walls?

You gotta be really careful when designing so-called "mining boxes". The temperatures can really get out of hand when not enough air flow is given to the box where you have your rigs in. Can really become a serious fire hazard.

I've personally designed miner boxes from cooler boxes for the various ASICs I operate  (L3+, etc.), and I've found they all work well as long as you have a way to ventilate the air the miners create, and you monitor temperatures as needed so you can add fans to increase intake or exhaust or up fan RPM so the miners don't overheat. I've seen people design miner boxes that twist around apparently to trap sound and to allow air to flow, but in reality those designs restrict airflow too much to be useful. Always make sure to test what you make over an extended period of time to ensure your design can work 24/7.

The 3M immersion cooling liquid is a major cost component. It's very expensive per liter.

Would that offset the rack costs and air circulation costs ? Like instead of spending money on ikea racks and others it would help and instead of spending money on ventilation and other costs like fans The 3m would be still worth it ?

Due to conservation of energy, the heat will still be there, just in the liquid instead of the air. You will still need some way to cool the liquid down. However, immersion is definitely more efficient in getting rid of the heat from your GPUs. You just need to figure out how to cool the liquid.

As an alternative to the 3M liquid, you can also consider mineral oil. You can search on YouTube for some videos where people have demo'd this concept usually on a small scale with single ASICs.

Yea I have looked into the mineral oil but I seen that the fan speed of the asic miners slow down and some ASICS they do not work mine or something like if the fan speed is not up a certain amount

I would recommend you also Rx 580 rigs with modded bios if you have cheap electricity. If not go with Gtx 1070/1070 ti being the best bang for the buck for the moment by mining Raven coin. They consume less then Rx cards and can be powered down by a computer app like Msi Afterburner.

I think cooling should not be a problem if you keep them in a cool place like a garage if it is in -1 or -2 floor which is cold enough. If you have your garage on normal level you should seriously think about immersive cooling.

Mineral oil shouldnt really be putted to be an option.Thinking and comparing viscosity level between water component would really be entirely different. It will
surely slow down those fans and also come to think that when oil is heated up it would produce even more temperature. We have known the properties of it so
its dumb to test it out for long term.

does have many networks like mine at home be very useful crypto on. with that goal required a good mining platform is efficient and capable. Whalesburg is a good mining platform with a sophisticated algorithm than the others. with the cost of transparent and stable mining capabilities, of course, it would be great for a farm at home.
