The last few days were very positive for Ethereum (ETH) and price increased by almost 60%. That's a big sign for ETH to have a claim for taking back the second position on coinmarketcap. XRP overtook ETH a few weeks ago and this fast reaction of ETH would be a positive sign for the entire crypto community. It was always a questionable move that XRP could overtake ETH and the recent price trend would back the importance of ETH as second crypto behind ETH.
For XRP, being very overvalued, this can result in another problem and damage of trust. In opposite, ETH was very undervalued based on it's use-case and offers an opportunity to buy some cheap ETH.

What's your opinion on this issue? Will ETH surpass XRP and stay in second place?
 

Long Term I think XRP will remain ahead of ETH, be that in no 2 spot or lower. Short term ETH could easily pass it with some point. The main reason I think XRP will remain higher is that it has real world adoption, even if the currency is a long way from being a true cryptocurrency.

My expectation is more other way round. In short term, XRP is ahead of ETH because XRP was always very speculative and endorsed by people who want to make some quick bucks but weren't aware of the centralized tech behind it. ETH has also some issues but getting them solved would bring more potential to ETH.

I believe, ethereum will outperform XRP. Just waiting for the time, then XRP will find it difficult to follow ethereum. Because in my opinion, ethereum is one of the best coins

XRP is now the main attraction on centralized banks across the globe and if this continue then i guess XRP will remain on second spot unless ETH have a good news or partnership coming.

If what has happened in the last days in the crypto markets is a real start for a bull market, a steady money inflow, then Ethereum will surpass Ripple for at least 2 reasons: Ethereum is a real platform, while Ripple is just a speculation tool and Ethereum got a great momentum and development.
Maybe I am too wary, but this may still be just a dead cat bounce (and then the money flow will stop again for the whole market) and then Ripple may remain on top.

I agree with your words. Jumping a dead cat is a very interesting phrase. Bitcoin came in $ 1,000, and many began to think that this was the beginning of a whipping trend, but it seems to me that this is an erroneous opinion and we will still see immersion in the 3,000 zone. Both coins are good and have their advantages and disadvantages, but Personally, I prefer Ethereum and I think that this coin will return to second place, and looking at the current growth, there are all prerequisites for this.

In last few weeks XRP overtake ETH which is so worrying for ETH holder. But that's the market and it happens. ETH has the ability to recover and that's now happening. In last few days ETH make comeback with the growth of 20% in their price.

Eth lost its 2nd position temporarily due to terrible dip in price now that trend seems to be reversed im quite hopeful that from here on eth will consolidate its position more and more. ETH is the most potential and better coin than other Alt-Coin, including Ripple coins which currently sit second after bitcoin. But I am not worried about this condition because this is only temporary. I saw last time that it needs 5 more billion dollars added to Ethereum's total market cap so it can overtake the 2nd place for the ranking on coinmarketcap.com. The rapid pump that went on Ethereum is amazing for this year end.

Whether they will stay on their own backyards, I'm an Eth loyalist. And regardless of its rank, ETH is still my top altcoin on my portfolio. But I do believe that ETH will be back on 2nd place soon. And with the current adoption of binance did to XRP as base pair, I think this made XRP even stronger but still I'm all in for eth.

It seems that Ripple creators are planning to raise the price and capitalization of Ripple even higher, judging by how quickly they develop the project and how many agreements they sign. The battle of the second place at coinmarketcap is pretty close between XRP and ETH in terms of marketcap but the volume was taken advantage by ethereum. If ETH will surpass $200, there could be a big chance thay it may take the crown to XRP. Ethereum have good potential crypto currency so many peoples are think like that, But Ripple is a banking sector platform so many organization is follow the Ripple project. May be next year second quarter is possible on Ethereum beat the Ripple marketcap. I personally believe both are maintained a same level in future.

Nowadays, Ethereum have a good acceleration and I think, ethereum's price will go up with same acceleration. Ripple (XRP) will not overtake to ethereum again in 2019, it will stay on third place. In bear trend, I suggest to invest mainly Ethereum because Ethereum will continue to increase own price.

Ethereum might stay in 3rd place if its price and market capitalization continue to decline in the coming year and gaining its former spot from xrp will become difficult. Xrp supports come from big banks and other companies that deals with fund transfers so there is a lot of funds for the secod rank coin. Ethereum is behind ripple by 600 million and while that may seem like a huge number that is not the truth, ethereum could switch places with ripple during the next month if people are positive about the Constantinople upgrade, I am really hoping that is the case because I invested a small amount of money in ethereum, so I could get some nice benefits if that happened but I do not want to get my hopes up just in case the price goes down again.

I think ethereum can take second place again, maybe that will happen in the next few weeks. the ripple and ethereum difference is now thinning and it is very possible for ethereum to go back over the ripple.

And that will be a true story, there was less than 7 millions dollars gap between ethereum's marketcap and ripple. we could surpass ripple again and this might happen tomorrow.
Ethreum gives a lot of advantages to the whole of crypto ecosystem.

Unfortunately, it's not the case because i just looked at cmc just now and see that XRP is still on the second spot however, ETH has a huge spike in the last day or so. So its going to be a tough battle for ETH unless the fork really propel them back to the second spot so let's wait and see.

It's going to be interesting on the second week of January. Might be a good time to accumulate right now and take the profits later when Constantinople goes live in mid January.

I don't know of I'm just being too hard on Ripple though but, I don't have any trust whatsoever in it and I think it's heading for doom. Don't your guys look at the charts before posting?! Ethereum has already retaken it's position at number 2 but only by a small margin. The question is whether that margin will increase to cement it's place at number 2 before ripple goes on another run

The good news comes to ETH, I read if there will be a HARDFORK from ETH that wants to eliminate bugs about mining and its code so that the Minning costs will be even cheaper. But hopefully not only is that the community's trust in ETH hopefully will come back again.

Yes finally ethereum passed ripple and now it is in second place again. Ripple does not deserve second order to my mind so I'm happy for this. Also I'm seeing some analyzes and we can see 200+ dollar in few days for ethereum.

Ethereum is far greater than ripple and what happened in the past was a temporary set back!  This is around third time that this overtaken has happened and I believe that the most time that both ethereum and ripple exist, I think ethereum has remained in second position above 90%. Cryptocurrencies market is recovering for another bull run and we should expect that to happen very soon. Ethereum has already surpassed ripple in about $76,000,000 in market capitalization.  I believe that ethereum will remain like this through out this year.

This thread was created last December, but this discussion is still relevant to what happened on this day. There is a lot of news scattered that ETH will meet Hardfork in early 2019, perhaps the current price increase is part of the effect of that information. However, as soon as the market capitulation between ETH and Ripple is still slightly different, there are still many possibilities that Ripple can overtake ETH again. Just a suggestion might be for you, buy ETH now and hold when Hardfork is finished, from there you can get a lot of profit.

Even this morning ripple was ahead of ethereum in terms of capitalization by a small margin. However, now Ethereum has regained its second place again and it seems that the gap between it and ripple continues to widen. So, now, according to CoinMarketCap, the ethereum's capitalization is 15.77 billion dollars, and ripple is 15.17 dollars. At the same time, the price of ethereum increased by 12 percent, Bitcoin by 4 percent, ripple by 5 percent. We see a clear growth advantage in ethereum.

As expected, ETH is really good and able to go back on where that coin belong. ETH will grow more, and if there’s a new coin coming for sure ETH will do more better. This is cryptomarket, and a lot of challenges in order for you to take the top spot, this mean to me that ETH is a strong coin that in every drop it will always find its own way up again. Only if you invest at the bottom, your profit now is very nice. 😊

That is a good sign and I expect that ETH and other altcoins to raise before the bitcoin will do so.
Do not forget, ETH dropped nearly the most, that's why it is recovering faster + hardfork is coming soon and the price may reflect.

The position doesn't count as growth, especially if we're talking about 4-5 positions up or down... okay if a coin go from 200th to 100th that's a growth!
But to fall 10% behind XRP and then go 2% ahead of XRP is not a proof of growth.

And one more thing, positions can at best measure competition (not growth). For example ETH could stay still and BTC and XRP do something wrong and fall 80% in one day, making ETH first... is that growth? No, the opposite.
Personally I dislike the competition that exists in our community when we should be working all together... only exceptions being the forks which were the results of infighting (ETC, BCH, BSV), those projects had the right to try compete but since they have failed they should just stop existing... for example I don't know why would anyone support ETC instead of helping ETH push forward... actually I know... it's so they can get the price higher and sell their failed coins.

Ethereum is a second best cryptocurrency after bitcoin there is no doubt about it, but 2018 was a very disappointing year for it. I believe it would come back strongly in this year, as investors have started showing interest in it again, so it would reach peak soon.

You are not the only one that does not trust in ripple but you are being too hard on it when you say that it is heading for doom, we know that ripple is supported by banks and they are not going to let their favourite project to disappear when it was the second coin in the market only behind bitcoin, they feel they are close at succeeding and they are not going to quit now, fortunately ethereum has claimed its rightful place and it is likely it will not release it in a long time.

I have no idea how it happened that XRP climbed to the second place. Anyway, it is not difficult to determine which currency has a stronger position, just look at the volume on Coinmarketcap - Ethereum has at the moment 6 times greater volume.

XRP can not keep its position for long time. Ethereum is unique project in the Crypto space, because they have the biggest community, as well as the best developers. There might be some fight on the second place now, but for long term, people know that Ether looks much better, because of the use cases it offers, and the projects that run on top of it.

It has already happened,  Ethereum has replaced ripple on coinmarketcap.  The second place that ether sit on is really nice and investors are eagerly waiting for price recovery of ether as ether lost so much during last year bear market!

Not surprise anymore since its been of many years that Ethereum is in the 2nd place.  Those days that Ripple have taking over Eth is due to the market fall and there is no significant way that it will stay on that place. Ethereum is on the race now and it absolutely regains more investors. 

XRP has overtaken ETH in the past too but that also did not last too long. In any case, when marketcaps are close in value, change in ranking can happen back and forth and does not mean much in the long run.

ETH prices have actually increased sharply and are showing signs of continuous growth today. because its price has increased 5-7% every day. The hard-fork event has caused its price to increase sharply and after the hard-fork event ends, its price has dropped sharply and it will have to slip down to 3rd place.

It is not as if ripple earned that position by itself what happened was that ethereum crashed way harder and it is easy to know why, ethereum depends significantly on how well icos are doing since many are developed above it so when the market crashed and people lost confidence in icos no one was buying ethereum and those icos that got enough ethereum to start their projects began dumping their ethereum because they feared the price will keep crashing.

It's a good news if ethereum is continue to move up but we can be so relax because anytime it will be change and it's normal. I hope bull run will start early so we can make a little profit.

Just relax even Ethereum will have the baddest days of its life. Bull run is imminent and to control yourself for doing such panics, you need to have a longer term with it. These rankings are basis on how much they have as total market cap but Ethereum overall is a good coin to invest with. I don't have XRP but many are also liking its idea due to Xrapid and its centralization. You just can't predict on how long this rally would go or if its the final meeting they have, I hope Ethereum will stay for a longer time on number 2 spot.

ETH reclaimed its second rank some days ago. Anyway, the rankings can change up and down from day to day by any big prcie moves in a coin.

Etherum has returned to position 2 and of course, this is a very appropriate moment at the beginning of 2019. Ethereum still has full support from investors. But for the future, I think Ethereum will continue to be ranked 2nd. And in January you are not late if you want to invest.

In my opinion, ETH always holds the second position on the coinmarketcap and other Altcoins cannot be replaced. In the last months of 2018, the market was not advantaged for ETH. But i think ETH price will high increase in 2019.

Agreed. This whole price bump of Ethereum has something to do with the schedule hardfork that's why it regained the 2nd spot. So I'm not surprised by the sudden surge but I just hope that the growth will be sustainable long term though, I don't know, I have a feeling that there will be another set of massive sell-off, specially for those who have bought Ethereum when the price is still at $90 (I hope I'm wrong though). ETH still need to focus on increasing the marketcap because I already check at the CMC and it's not too big the differences, and if ETH cannot do more, then XRP will beat ETH again this time. The market itself still moving and many altcoins trying to compete with the other, and they want to get the better position on the CMC. I agree with you mate, this XRP has taken the second spot because of the volatility of Ethereum which the Ripple had taken advantage on the dumping of ethereum. I think sooner we can visualize the gap if ethereum will be back on track with the full implementation of hardfork. This second place battle will end if the bull run will come as many investors will trust ethereum than ripple.

Yes of course ETH will going to have a good market price. If we will going to compare between XRP and ETH then relatively just by counting the number of coins using platforms then it would be ETH.
