We don't know yet if they can cope for the loss or how the users will be affected.
I once read that they had 1 million users.
I know that they have about 100 staff in Christchurch (NZ)

I think that @Lafu might work there, maybe he can let us know more about the situation.
I didn't have much on it (100$ or so).
I hope that none of you guys will be impacted.

Thanks kenzawak for the help with the pictures.

Thanks Kenzawak for the photos.

Also, so far the losses are about 3 millions usd.

This seams not much, but it is quite a lot.

For the past few months the volume was about $2millions/month.

Their fees is 0.2%

3millions/0.2% = 1.5 billions $ of trading volume

It is the equivalent of 750 days of fees (without paying employees, servers....)

Maybe they can raise some money from new investors, else that will have to use users’ funds.

This is sad for NZ.

"$2millions/month"
$2millions/day I assume.
Where did you find these figures please?

Hello,

Also discover this this morning and was again really surprise that a so large exchange could have security breach and lead to so important theft.

I again better understand why at the beginning when I entered crypto I heard many people always claim to don't leave our assets on exchnages if you want to hold.

Do you think an exchange like cryptopia could recover after a so big seurity issue even without thinking about refunding the poor users ?

And more generally what do you think about the impact on ERC-20 token/environment ? Finally other own blockchains are more sheltered because more hard to hack differents ones in the same time ?

Special thinking for the people who lost their money.

It is these types of news that will make the headlines and make potential investors go: Nah, lets invest our money somewhere else, far away from the crypto industry. And can we blame them? How many times have we already heard about exchanges being hacked, wallets being compromised, exit scams etc...

No, they've not returned. They actually deleted Cryptopia's copy of Ethereum private key after copying it for themselves on the day of hack. It's not like that Cryptopia has been hacked again!

The police has already refuted that claim.

Police dispute claims more cryptocurrency taken from Christchurch company Cryptopia

Quote
Blockchain analysis company Elementus' CEO Max Galka has written a blog post claiming another $260,000 worth of Ethereum (a type of cryptocurrency) has been transferred from about 17,000 Cryptopia wallets (like a bank account for digital currency) since police began investigating. The transfers allegedly began about 1am on Tuesday.

Quote
Detective Inspector Greg Murton, of Canterbury police, said it was "not correct" that more currency had been transferred without authorisation.

I think that @Lafu might work there, maybe he can let us know more about the situation.

Lafu doesn't work there. He is a volunteer chat moderator on their trollbox.
Their staff is currently on leave while the police is investigating.

There is very little confirmed information about what has happened. Everyone is calling it a hack but the statement says "security breach". That could describe a lot of different scenarios that do not involve hacking.

So far the only reliable source of information has been here: http://www.police.govt.nz/news/search-results/Cryptopia

Until there is a detailed official statement from the police it is hard to tell the facts from fiction.

I doubt they will open this February, or if they will ever re-open again. The site is still having that important announcement. No progress yet.

I think that's only the list with Bitcoin exchanges. There were plenty of hacks between the altcoin-only exchanges too. One example would be Mintpal, which I recall and it's not on your list (yes, Mintpal also had a hack, not only the money Moolah has stolen some months later).

Yeah I remember Mintpal.
Their are many not on the list like shapeshift, and Cryptsy.

New police statement :

Quote
Thursday, 7 February 2019 - 3:22pm
Canterbury
Please attribute to Detective Inspector Greg Murton:

The Police investigation into the Cryptopia hack and theft of cryptocurrency is progressing well and advancing on several fronts.

The focus is on identifying those behind this offending and retrieving the stolen cryptocurrency.

This is a complex investigation involving the theft of cryptocurrency in an unregulated environment.

The stolen cryptocurrency is being actively tracked by Police and specialists worldwide due to the nature of the cryptocurrency blockchains being publicly available.

Excellent progress is being made in the investigation and we are working with Cryptopia management plus current and former employees who have been providing valuable assistance.

We are working closely with our international partners and cybercrime experts to continue the investigation.

Cryptopia’s managers are on site at their Christchurch address and Police are expected to finish at the premises by the end of next week (Friday 15 February).

This investigation is expected to take a considerable amount of time to resolve due to the complexity of the cyber environment.

Also, I stopped by their place to check it out.

I stopped by today just after 6pm  to ask where my coins are

Offices looked empty

no one on the car park

There is light in some of the offices :

I saw a guy inside not far from the front door, the door was obviously closed.

From the outside nothing says that it is Cryptopia, but it is definitely the right location.

Cryptopia update
As of this morning, the hackers have liquidated $3.2m in tokens, with the bulk of that going to Etherdelta

Until now they still haven't opened their exchanges, either until now because we know to reopen the exchange of cryptopia, they have to replace the funds of their members whose numbers are not small and secondly they have to make better security because of this the same time they are hacked
and including me is a member who hopes that Cryptopia will come back to life and replace assets in it and we will always see its development on Twitter

It's a shame that Cryptopia has brought in  liquidators. They were more than a simple exchange with their boards and marketplace and one of my most commonly used exchanges. I do wish more exchanges and crypto companies as a whole gave postmortems of how a hack was successful. While perhaps embarrassing it could help the crypto community as a whole to know what took some site down and potential pitfalls others should avoid.

Cryptopia is one of ny best exchange back then when i started trading newly because of the fact that you can withdraw funds from there without kyc. Its a pity they have to face these challenges.  They should have put more priorities on security of their platform.  I hope other exchange will learn from this incident

I don't think that there's going to be any change in attitude of traders. They'll keep putting their coins in exchanges. This is still a total jungle and the way the founder of Cryptopia is coming back with a new exchange is a proof of it.

Cryptopia is now a thing of the past, any attempt for them to come back will not get support from investors and traders, I'm pretty sure they will create a new exchange, so we have to be very watchful for the new exchange, it's possible that they are being run by the Cryptopia team, they know how profitable running an exchange, and they will not just surrender like that.
