Title: Thread Printing
Post by: eldrin on February 20, 2019, 01:52:44 AM
When printing a thread with more than 25 pages, the error "The topic is too large to fit on one page" is encountered.
Aside from "Printing", are there any other ways to get all responses on a certain thread and maybe compile then into a document-format file?
For entertainment purposes only :D Thanks!

If you use MS Word, you can copy all page and then paste into MS Word file and yes, you got every page in a file ;D

Maybe the other software can do like that 8)

You can probably write a script to do skmrtjing like that. I doubt many functions will let you here it's not exactly resource friendly hence why it has the hash cash page from cloud flare (to eliminate crawlers like google searchs).

For some reason, the forum can't display the print-friendly view of any page with "all" button disabled (25 pages and up) but it looks like the option had worked last Sept.2015 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1189416.msg12510820#msg12510820) and it is working on other SMForums (50 pages) (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=printpage;topic=293949.0).

Maybe theymos can enable this (again?) since long page of texts isn't much of a resource hog.

Wall Observer (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178336.457780) disagrees :P Clearly, there should be a limit, but I too often miss this feature for long threads.
"Show all" is so convenient to CTRL-F something. I usually end up scraping the thread (or someone's post history) to search the raw text.

Update: it won't give you a printer-friendly format, but I made this for searching big threads: "Show All" on long topics (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5112444.0).

Try copying it manually with a document editor and then print it from there, you can do that using Microsoft world or other document editor apps on you mobile device or PC, or better still you can use the view all option on the forum and try printing directly but have not tried that option before just a suggestion.

Install this add-on https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/full-page-screen-capture/fdpohaocaechififmbbbbbknoalclacl?hl=en (Full page screen capture) I used it before and did not encounter any problem.
You can capture the threads full page and you can save it in JPG form.

@loyce, for what you want you could probably save the pages and have a tiny script thst just appends each one to the bottom of the other, this might be what you already do though (or something similar).

Have you tried different methods of viewing the thread before printing?

For example, check out the different methods of viewing this thread (not sure of the code to view all pages this way):

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5112077.0;wap2

But wap or imode versions doesn't gives original view of thread. It's just a text and nothing more. If someone wants to print Bitcointalk thread, probably he would want to see original view with all images, signatures and other things.

@LTU, that isn't what the print function currently does. It just shows a printable version of the site (or a printer friendly version).

OP is saying something like this function https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=printpage;topic=5112077.0

That would be so much effort (especially when a thread has hundreds of pages) and my document editor might not be able to handle such big size since I'm just using an old and low-memory PC.

or better still you can use the view all option on the forum and try printing directly but have not tried that option before just a suggestion.
Just like the Print function, the "view all" feature of the forum isn't accessible to all threads.

Install this add-on https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/full-page-screen-capture/fdpohaocaechififmbbbbbknoalclacl?hl=en (Full page screen capture) I used it before and did not encounter any problem.

Then I won't be able to get what I want, to search for some words for example, since the file is in image format.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5112077.0;imode
This is actually the best option since I only want to get the users and the content of their posts. Thank you!

LoyceV actually made great initiatives to solve this issue.
However, I strongly believe that it is good enough to use archived for later use, rather than print hundreds of pages.
It is also one of the way to prevent environmental pollution and help our planet more sustainable.
