Title: Starbucks, Nordstrom And Whole Foods Now Accept Bitcoin
Post by: Hydrogen on May 14, 2019, 06:56:48 AM
Quote
It is a freakishly hot May afternoon when Cameron Winklevoss decides to quench his thirst with a tall cold-brewed coffee from Starbucks, and “just a little bit of cream, to round it off,” as he says.

The temperature has shot up 20 degrees since the day before and is 20 degrees hotter than it will be the day after, too. With his twin brother, Tyler, and a small entourage in tow, the 6-foot-5 Cameron abruptly stands up from a proportionately giant boardroom table at the swanky New York offices of Gemini, the brothers’ cryptocurrency exchange, and makes for the glass door in the glass wall that encloses the immaculately shiny room.

During a brisk two-minute walk through the hip Gramercy Park neighborhood, Cameron passes two gyms before entering a Starbucks on the corner of Park Avenue South and 23rd Street, in the same building as the IMG modeling agency that represents Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot and the SPIN Ping-Pong lounge owned by actress Susan Sarandon.

Moving quickly past the chilled glass case holding cookie dough cake pops dipped in melted milk chocolate and doughnut cake pops in strawberry frosting topped with giant rainbow sprinkles, he approaches a counter where an infrared Honeywell scanner sits sandwiched between bunches of ripe bananas and Starbucks-branded sugar-free chewing gum.

As the song “Work” by Rhianna blares through the coffee shop’s speakers, Cameron orders the small cold-brew coffee he’d been craving and takes out his phone. He brings up the beta version of a new app called Spedn, built by little-known payments startup Flexa and waives a QR code in front of the Honeywell scanner, paying for the drink with a cryptocurrency he and his brother invented that’s powered by the ethereum blockchain.

In some corners of the world, what has just happened would be considered historic. He turns around like a proud father and smiles. “We're finally realizing the promise of crypto in payments,” says Cameron. “It's taken a long time, but as you've seen for yourself, we're here. It's a total win for the merchants. That transaction was effectively free.”

The problem is, Starbucks, along with every single one of a huge group of giant enterprises now accepting cryptocurrency as payment, seems to be having trouble admitting what they’re doing. As a photograph of the receipt for the transaction was taken, one member of the Winklevoss entourage recommended that Cameron cover up the Starbucks logo with his thumb. “They’re not participating in the first announcement,” she reminded Cameron.

In the days that followed, neither Gemini, which is custodying the cryptocurrency, nor Flexa, the company that built the app and signed up the enterprises participating in today’s launch, were able to get any of their own clients to confirm via email, yet alone talk on the record. Nevertheless, all evidence points to the fact that as of today, some of the largest and best-known companies in the world are now accepting bitcoin, ether, litecoin, bitcoin cash, zcash and the Gemini Dollar (GUSD), a cryptocurrency backed by real U.S. dollars stored in a State Street account and built on top of the public ethereum blockchain.

Receipts provided to Forbes from a few of the hundreds of beta app testers confirmed that crypto purchases were made at Game Stop, Bed Bath & Beyond and Whole Foods. Emails from Barnes & Noble, Office Depot and Nordstrom were also provided by Flexa to confirm the stores' participation in the project. In total, 89% of the beta users spent cryptocurrency at at least one of the locations announced today, according to Flexa data, with 81% of those spending multiple times at more than one location.

Companies now officially accepting these cryptocurrencies, according to Flexa, are Barnes & Noble, Baskin Robbins, Bed Bath & Beyond, Caribou Coffee, Crate & Barrel, Express, GameStop, Jamba Juice, Lowe’s, Nordstrom, Office Depot & OfficeMax, Petco, Regal Cinemas, Ulta Beauty and Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market. And of course, there's Starbucks, in spite of not being part of the official launch. In total, nearly 100 stores are expected to start accepting bitcoin and the other cryptocurrencies via the Spedn app by the end of this year.

“The crypto industry has historically overpromised and underdelivered,” says Gemini CEO Tyler Winklevoss, 37. “And this is one of the first times we're actually delivering on the spend use case of using your crypto.”

To be perfectly clear, this is a big, big deal. For an industry born in anonymity and mystery, grown by crypto-anarchists, and tested in the fires of black markets in the dark corners of the deep Web, this is the beginning of a new phase of mainstream acceptance. But also to be clear, none of the companies have independently confirmed they are accepting cryptocurrency.

In spite of Cameron’s purchase, Starbucks, the only company that responded to our requests, claimed they are not working with Gemini or Flexa. One possible reason is that in August 2018, Starbucks announced it was a founding partner of a competing cryptocurrency exchange, Bakkt, and would help the New York Stock Exchange spin off convert digital assets into U.S. dollars for acceptance as payment at their stores.

So how is Flexa already letting Cameron Winklevoss pay for that Starbucks coffee with crypto, and how are the 15 other enterprises also doing so? First, users need to download the app from Apple’s App store, then send it their asset of choice from any cryptocurrency wallet. While Gemini custodies the crypto funds, Spedn takes care of the payment itself by generating a one-time QR code on the phone’s screen, which is scanned by the participating store’s existing scanner, debiting the amount charged from the customer’s account. While the customer gets a receipt showing the purchase as a gift card, Spedn settles the payment with the merchant in the preferred currency at a later date.

There are two main reasons why these merchants might want to use a product like Flexa, according to its CEO, Tyler Spalding, or competitors such as BitPay, Coinbase, or Circle Pay, the last two of which also have their own stable coin, called USD Coin (USDC). The first is that because cryptocurrency transactions are permanent, they give Spedn the certainty it needs to decline requests that funds be returned, a process called chargebacks. Consulting firm Javelin Strategy estimates that chargebacks cost merchants $31 billion in 2017. “We have a verified, irreversible payment,” says Spalding, 39. “Which is not possible using any other current method.”

Spalding, a former NASA researcher and a director at Lockheed Martin Space Systems, says the second benefit to merchants is that it only costs his company about four cents to “process any payment of any size.” With average interchange fees in 2017 ranging between $0.22 and $0.52 depending on the transaction value and the percent fee, according to U.S. Federal Reserve bank data, there’s plenty of room to negotiate and still turn a profit. For larger transactions, the profit for Flexa could be massive, and so could the savings for merchants. “Whatever they're paying now, we want to go lower than that,” says Spalding. To give an idea of what’s at stake, $5.93 trillion in traditional credit card payments resulted in $88.39 billion in fees in the U.S. alone, according to a 2017 Nilson report.

Spalding was first inspired to bitcoin payments as a result of Game Seven of the 2016 World Series between the Cleveland Indians and his beloved Chicago Cubs. It had been 106 years since the Cubs had won a World Series, and as 40 million viewers tuned in to watch the game on television, tickets to the game were selling for as much as $50,000 a pair, with worries over fraud rampant. A lifelong Cubs fan who grew up in Chicago, Spalding and his wife flew, to Cleveland to watch the season-clinching historic game.

At the time, Spalding was the chief technical officer of gift card startup Raise, and was already familiar with alternative means of payment. So when he found a season ticket holder willing to sell him two tickets for $10,000 worth of bitcoin, he wasn’t surprised, and jumped at the chance. “This was a very high-value, very risky transaction, and this person is saying, ‘No. No. I want crypto,’” says Spalding. “It was perfect.” A Chicago Cubs victory and two years later, he co-founded Flexa.

Spedn is the first app powered by the Flexa Network, an ethereum-based payments network similar to Visa or Mastercard, but for spending cryptocurrency. To build on the network, Spedn and others are required to lock up its native flexacoin cryptocurrency as collateral. “The apps need to pledge within the network to allow their apps to spend,” says Spalding.

In addition to giving builders access to the network, the token was sold to Pantera Capital and others to raise $14.1 million in a private initial coin offering (ICO) to pay for development and compensate the founders, among other uses. About 15% of the total coins in existence were sold during an ICO, which valued the company at about $80 million at the time. Over the week before today’s announcement, the price of a flexacoin actually dropped 30% to $0.0053, according to price site CoinGecko, but over the past 30 days it increased 108%.

While today’s crop of giant, well-known companies accepting the Spedn app is certainly the largest, highest-profile group to ever accept cryptocurrency, they are not the first. In fact, this is really the latest in a second wave of companies to do so. Early in the history of bitcoin a number of high-profile companies including CheapAir, Microsoft, Overstock.com, Reddit, and Expedia started accepting cryptocurrency. Venture-backed OpenBazaar is an online market that lets its vendors accept a wide-range of cryptocurrencies as payment for goods.

But in 2018, as the price of bitcoin collapsed from $19,000 to $5,000 Expedia, Reddit and a flurry of other companies stopped accepting the cryptocurrency, citing lack of interest due to price volatility. The mantra of the time was "hodl," a misspelling of the word "hold," meaning not to sell or spend cryptocurrency. The app's name, Spedn, derived from "spend," is a play on this mantra.

One big difference between the first generation of companies accepting cryptocurrency and those announced today is the relatively recent invention of stable coins like the Gemini Dollar and USD Coin, which give users the benefits of crypto without the risk of fluctuating prices. “Our dream one day is to allow any coin to be spent at any merchant,” says Flexa cofounder Trevor Filter, 29. “Not just in the U.S. but across the entire world.”

For anyone who remembers discussions from years ago about bitcoin going mainstream: bitcoin reaching a critical point of mass adoption to where you could literally purchase a cup of coffee with it. That day may finally have arrived. History is being made! This has to be one of the biggest and least covered events to ever occur in the history of crypto currencies.

One big question here is what the media and pro establishment response will be, if any. There have been numerous news reports of mcdonalds and other retail giants rolling out their own payment processor systems based around cell phone technology. In mcdonald's case, their implementation was reported to be significantly flawed with many having their money stolen and accounts breached. Crypto currency based payment systems associated with cell phones could be poised to provide a stable and functional merchant platform in an era where such technology is in desperate need.

This is huge news, this year had been great due to development and mass adaptation news. A lot of big and well-known companies are starting to accept cryptocurrency as payment. This will further push mass adaptation and it's also a good start for other companies to start upgrading their payment system by adapting crypto as an alternative payment.

Kind of hard to tell what the media or pro-establishment response would be - what with cryptocurrency's reputation to the public. Not everyone feels safe with the use of crypto so their may be doubt with this kind of payment system at first.

Surely, good news such as this would have an impact on the price but I thought of the recent price spike can be likened to the parabolic rise last 2015 which also slowly recovered from a bearish trend. During that time, there was a near 150 percent increase before temporarily topping out at $499 on Nov. 4th of that year. For the year 2019, bitcoin's price increases have been quite aggressive.

It's just an indication that most establishments as adopting and accepting Bitcoin. Mass adoption is on its way and I guess it would bring a big impact on the price of bitcoin.
I can't imagine buying a coffee from Starbucks and pay it with bitcoin. Life is more convenient now because of cryptocurrency.

It's great to see that bitcoins will be integrated into a variety of payment solutions, nither the cashier or the customers should be thinking about if the payment comes from crypto or fiat, payment needs to be done fast, and if we can use our crypto for daily purchase then the price of crypto will go up and more new people will buy crypto's.

Starbucks? Damn. This is awesome news indeed. Also heard a rumor that Ebay would provide BTC as a payment option soon which would epic if it actually proved be true in the near future.

This kind of news is helping BTC surge in value slowly and steadily at present.

Wow, that is a smart decision taken by the business owner, because as time goes on and technology if we cannot adapt well then everything we do will be in vain, as well as accepting bitcoin as a means of payment in a business / business, it is a very profitable step in the future, today maybe bitcoin is still underestimated, but in the future there is nothing that is impossible if bitcoin is used as an international payment tool, this could be the same as the first internet development was created maybe but in fact now all aspects of life almost need the internet.

The more people use their coins to pay for goods the more pressure there is on the price as long as the coins get converted to fiat. People's missing will to spend their coins actually helps propping up Bitcoin. Mass adoption where Bitcoin doesn't get converted to fiat directly is what will impact the price for real, positively.

I can't imagine buying a coffee from Starbucks and pay it with bitcoin. Life is more convenient now because of cryptocurrency.
I too can't, because I find Starbucks way too expensive, lol.

And eh, there is no need to exaggerate. Fiat still offers far more convenience than crypto does as money.

It is a great news for us who are waiting for crypto currency to be recognize and be able to use it as a regular currency.
This is why we have new investors in crypto because of this great news .

There are multiple reasons for bitcoin's price spike, and yes, more retailers accepting bitcoin is highly bullish. This is contingent on the infrastructure of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies continually being improved. It seems institutional buying and bear fatigue are underlying this bull market.

The approach that taking place is the openness to the use of technology in everyday life rather than the real adoption of these currencies. I expect that there will be a tendency to adopt some stablecoins or bank-based coins instead of accepting BTC.

Currently, the use of cryptos will be a tool to charge the new card/system (Not using Blockchain.)
Finally, I do not expect to use Starbucks, Nordstrom,....etc for its own currency, but rather to adopt a stable coin technology.

Businesses won't start accepting crypto for payments unless a lot of customers start asking for it.  Regular money is a lot easier to accept and the majority of people still use that.  Hopefully none of these companies try to create their own coin because that would be a disaster.

This is really the best news of the last few days and it could also explain the recent surge in prices. If the first big companies accept Bitcoin, smaller companies will surely soon follow suit and also accept Bitcoins. This could really be the beginning of mass adaptation.  :)

One thing I learn about the media is they'll pay extra attention to the bad news and exploit ot rather than good news. Because all they want to see is mistakes within the system as its what creates the buzz and more traffic for their website. To be honest the media don't even give a damn about the progress or developments for the crypto industry all they care aboit are juicy news that can make them earn cash.

That could be a reason why bitcoin price increase in these few days but I am sure there is another reason to explain this situation.
But no matter what is the reason, I am glad to see bitcoin price now become stronger than before, and I am sure that it will break another higher price.
I hope that there will be much more good news like that and it will give effect to the bitcoin price to increase so people could see a new type of making money comes and they can take their part to join into bitcoin world.

What i think is , the only reason it was successful was because of Lightning network.

It actually enabled payments to be made in an instant and also , it's like Making payments with a credit or a debit card therefore it is actually very convenient and at the same time more and more wallets are now integrating it with their software.

I just hope more security would be added in the network.

It is true, this was made possible by Gemini and Flexa.

Buying the Bucks
Through Gemini and Flexa users can essentially buy coffee with Bitcoin as easy as using any fiat currency by flashing their smartphone with an Apple Pay-like app.

The payment works via Flexa’s Spend mobile app. Once you install the app on your smartphone, you the proceed to send some crypto to your wallet. The app supports a number of cryptos including the obvious ones like, Bitcoin and Ethereum. It also supports Zcash, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and the exchange’s native dollar-pegged stablecoin, the Gemini Dollar.

This could explain bitcoin's recent price spike.

At the same time this news broke, Bakkt also announced they were launching futures markets in July. A double whammy!

Oddly, it seems like the retail companies are being extremely hush-hush about it: (https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeldelcastillo/2019/05/13/starbucks-nordstrom-and-whole-foods-now-accept-bitcoin-just-dont-ask-them/#3ddf81412252)

I don't think so. These developments are the result of months and months of behind the scene negotiations, hard work, etc. This pretty much means that they started when we were bottoming out.

How much worse can it get? At most we see a sharp selloff taking the price back to $6000 or maybe test the $5000 mark, so what? With the block halving coming up that will prove to be a super entry point.

What we have seen this month is a glimpse of what we can expect moving forward. It's a clear signal that the market sentiment has shifted and the improved charts make institutions like Bitcoin as asset.

It's not instant. As far as i know, lightning software still in the beta and not all of the nodes are using LN. LN will not solve the big problem of bitcoin with its scalability and i was feeling doubt about that. Maybe it can be even faster than before but i doubt if that will create an instant transaction for bitcoin in the future.

I found many coffee shops here, and this shop is popular because it offers various types of coffee from all over the world. I am very happy that big companies are starting to look at bitcoin and I think this is a brilliant achievement, more and more people believe and are comfortable transacting with bitcoin. and coffee is an important part of this promotion throughout the world.

I guess this is the cause why Bitcoin price rises too fast within a week. I think these Food stores realize that the bull market is really coming and they want to join with the hype. But i wonder if they would last for a year or two because some of these businesses who accept crypto are quitting because they can't handle the bearishness of the market.

Starbucks branches are located across the globe, and when one branch tested this crypto payment as successful, it will be a domino effect.
The mass adoption is really growing everyday. And I believe, not only Starbucks are considering this step-up.
More and more establishments are considering bitcoin as one of their payment methods. It is only a matter of time, when will they fully implement such plan. But I bet, they are already working behind the curtain.

Just went to the Starbucks just around the block and the store manager didn't know about such news just yet, and perhaps only the higher-ups of the said company know about this and the information is yet to be disseminated. This might help me with my caffeine addiction and to uae my bitcoins finally on something sensible for me. I just hope that they don't pull the silent takedown of crypto payments once bitcoin again find its way towards the 'dying' part of this pump.

Not only is the advantage for Bitcoin a good transaction tool by applying it in such large places and it may now be a question mark because when they survive but we still hope to run for a long time and so on, the news is regrettable as it appears in very good conditions it's okay maybe now there is a way to adopt Bitcoin as a payment tool, we only support what happens and hopefully it becomes a reflection for others.

If there's a major btc price crash, all those big brands will start cancelling bitcoin payments with the speed of light.

What makes you think they care about the price? Has any company said they'll actually be holding onto coins, like Overstock? I assume most (or all) of them will be settling to fiat through Gemini.

I'm impressed Gemini can support this. These are huge retail chains. Gemini's books aren't very deep....but I guess they have access to OTC liquidity too.

New software is rolled out all the time without lower managers being aware of it, eventually, they'll get the materials required to "modernize" their system with the current mission statement.

However, back on topic, that's actually pretty insane news to hear. People are now actually going to be able to purchase essential products with their Bitcoin, and that's a big step for overall adoption. I don't think that there have previously been companies which sell products like food and accept Bitcoin at the same time. Slowly but surely there will be people who clue in on this and begin to explore their other options.

As for OP talking about this news is a possible reason for the spike, I'd be inclined to believe that. It's not insider trading when you start buying more of the currency that someone will be creating a demand for. Or, at least, I don't think it is. Someone can probably correct me. Anyone with inside knowledge that this announcement was coming could definitely have purchased a bunch of Bitcoin in anticipation of the announcement, and that kicked the market back into high-gear. Interesting stuff either way.

I think this has a lot to do with prices. they accept cryptocurrency payments, of course, considering price fluctuations. and I thought it happened because they believed that crypto would be used as a currency, on the other hand it was good for crypto development

Now we are gradually getting there, all haters who think bitcoin will not get much adoption this year can really see the speed at which a lot of retail companies are coming up integrating bitcoin as payment processor.

We can see how fast the price of bitcoin will continue to increase even without bull run with these types of companies that will be able to keep the market at a very uptrend. Now I am adding this to the list of all projects that I have compiled that will implement bitcoin payment this year and when I am through with the compilation, I will probably post it on this forum.

There are multiple reasons for bitcoin's price spike, and yes, more retailers accepting bitcoin is highly bullish. This is contingent on the infrastructure of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies continually being improved. It seems institutional buying and bear fatigue are underlying this bull market.
more giant retailers accept bitcoin , mass adoption will happen.it will create new demand for bitcoin from these retailers consumer.for them using bitcoin as payment give 2 advantages.as investment platform and also give them effectiveness so they no need to bring money in huge amount.
Sometimes, these type of news can be hidden in the web, because I have been trying to research on things that could be mooning the price of bitcoin wherein I found nothing of this on till I got this one on this great thread, this could be some of the reasons why bitcoin price is really is surging.

I knew that we will have lots of this retailers establish bitcoin payment in their business this Q2 because most of this companies had used First quarter to deliberate and also prepare the implementation method, so more of these type of projects that will create mass adoption is still on its way, and I wonder why people don’t constantly broadcast of things like this, we need it so it can quickly get us to the FULL MOON.

Well, I think it is the other way around because I still remember when Steam cancelled payments on btc because of the expensive fees when making a very small purchase of games. I know it was around $20k and they realized it was not feasible for their digital market. I wish those that are mentioned above hopefully don't do the same.

The news is really great, but there are only a some questions about reporting to regulatory bodies. This is especially true of the United States. But I think that the management of the companies has already provided for these questions and prepared a way out of the situation so that there would be no problems with the tax authorities. I can’t wait until all the major online stores start accepting Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for payment. Hope this time will come very soon.

yes you maybe right because i heard that steam replace btc with litecoin but i think its not only the expensive fees is thier issue but also the volatile nature of bitcoin as well  . bitcoin is too unstable , while litecoin is more on a stable side  . anyway , this is another good news if starbucks really accept bitcoin payments  , i know that starbucks is a big and popular brand but i didnt recognize the the other two   .

I am not sure if this is the type of adoption we exactly want or we should not want at all. Now, according to the new app we can spend the crypto currency of our choosing wherever we want and the payment goes to them in fiat currency which means we basically purchased whatever we wanted for crypto but at the same time the shop we just purchased stuff from didn't realize that and has no consent over it at all since they are literally getting fiat like they want to. It means maybe this is the way all crypto adoption will go and everyone will be capable of getting that sort of payments available to them without asking permission from the shop owners or maybe shop owners will start to say this sort of payment is not allowed? Time will tell but it will be either huge or will be banned.

Gemini's announcement on Medium (https://medium.com/gemini/flexa-and-gemini-partner-to-make-it-easy-to-use-cryptocurrency-b9ace9174bcc) spells out why merchants are interested:

Quote
With Flexa, merchants (i) get significantly less expensive and fraud-resistant transactions, (ii) can use the same payment hardware they currently use, and (iii) receive payment in fiat currency, not crypto. We believe that not only will this result in cost-savings to the merchant, but to the consumer in the long-term as well.

They're "receiv[ing] payment in fiat currency, not crypto." So I don't think they care about prices. They care about cheap merchant fees and cutting down on fraud costs.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general are a pretty popular topic in the last months and I've noticed there is an increase in the number of people that have knowledge about it. It looks like big companies are also noticing that and they know this will bring them more profits along with new customers. It's interesting that this is the first time I see this companies, like Starbucks accepting bitcoin even though I follow some news websites regularly.

What are you trying to say? By no consent, do you mean the merchants don't know that people are paying with crypto just because they're receiving fiat? If so, I can 100% guarantee you that they know. That's not the type of information that a payment processor can withhold from a client.

As for crypto being immediately converted to fiat, I don't think it's an ideal solution, but it does help with adoption. At the end of the day, end users of crypto will be able to spend their coins better, and businesses have an incentive to accept crypto as payment. It's a fair compromise between the two parties.  Once crypto goes mainstream, they would probably be incentivized to get rid of the third party processor (and accept crypto directly) to streamline costs.

I wouldn't have tested out that McDonalds' system, sucks to lose money. I use an exchange to pay my bills right off my phone, never once did I had a problem.

I don't know if I missed it in the article but is Starbucks planning to accept bitcoin directly? Or are they making some sort of system where you can top up the account with bitcoin and then use that to pay for the purchase (sort of like what large exchanges do)?

But it's still using the app and with the help from some exchange sites to provide the best way to liquidate the bitcoin that used to pay that. If there will be more people feel convenience with used the bitcoin payment system through use the secondary app and than that will open a lot of chance to make more adoption. I hope any companies will consider to add bitcoin as payment system. mainstream adoption will be result on the new ATH for bitcoin. Well, yesterday when I read this I wasn't as enthusiastic as the others, mainly because of the two new intermediaries that are going to be involved in and the fact that you will basically fund an account with your BTC and a 3rd party will act as a custodian, or ...like a bank.

But right now, looking at the fees, seeing how I have a 10sat tx stuck for almost 26 hours and one of 30sat for already 4 hours I can say that at least for now it is good the bulk of the transactions, apart from the funding ones will be offchain or at least seriously batched into big ones.
There are already 40k in the mempool and at 0.5 per usual tx I doubt the merchants would take the hit for a long time before they pull a 2017 again and stop accepting it.
We seriously need easy to understand and easy to use LN clients before we think of BTC as a real alternative payment

It might be the major factor that will boost the adoption of cryptocurrency, but we can still count them as integral part of the process of adoption.

Imagine that we have 70% out of 100 retail companies all adopting cryptocurrency; we don’t need to carry placard or bill board for users to get to know about cryptocurrency, they will through their products get people to know what cryptocurrency is for and how it’s being used, from there we will also get people that will invest or typically start storing crypto in their wallet too for further usage or bank it there for future usage.

Another news story on this with a little more info(see: bolded).

Quote
Bitcoin Comes to Whole Foods, Major Retailers in Coup for Digital Currency

Since its arrival ten years ago, cryptocurrency has struggled to enter mainstream commerce. This could soon change thanks to a new initiative, announced on Monday, that will reportedly see big name retailers—including Crate and Barrel, Nordstrom, and Amazon-owned Whole Foods—now accept Bitcoin and three other types of digital money.

The retail initiative comes via a partnership between Flexa, a payments startup, and Gemini, the Winklevoss-owned digital currency company. It works by piggy-backing on the digital scanners that many big retailers use to accept phone-based payments from their apps and from digital wallets like Apple Pay.

What Flexa has done is persuade the retailers—which also include Regal Cinemas, Gamestop and Baskin Robbins—to configure their scanners to recognize payments from its cryptocurrency app, which is called Spedn. The customer simply holds up their app to pay. The store cashier will typically be unaware the customer is paying with crypto, while the merchant receives a real-time payment in the form of their choosing (crypto or dollars).

I was initially skeptical. While the Winklevoss twins enjoy credibility in the Bitcoin realm, merchants have by and large shunned cryptocurrency because of its volatility and its popularity with cybercriminals.

The app, however, appears to work as advertised. This weekend, I tried it by downloading a test version of Spedn, and transferring $10 worth of Bitcoin to it. Next, I went to a Baskin Robbins in my neighborhood and bought a small coffee by scanning the app. It worked. Next, I went to a Starbucks (another partner in the project but an unofficial one) and bought a banana. That worked too. In each case, the app adjusted the amount Bitcoin in my wallet.

The first widespread, low-friction opportunity for consumers to shop with cryptocurrency, this is potentially a big deal. The Spedn app lets users spend four types of crypto: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum and a so-called stablecoin called a Gemini Dollar, which is pegged to the value of one U.S. dollar and backed by banking giant State Street.

This Time It’s Different?
Over the years, some merchants have tried accepting Bitcoin, but many eventually abandoned it, in part because of slow processing times on cryptocurrency networks. Meanwhile, for consumers, using cryptocurrency as an everyday payment mechanism has proved impractical because of crypto’s volatility—a wallet with $100 worth of Bitcoin at the start of the week may only be worth $80 by week’s end.

But this time around, merchants may be more comfortable offering crypto payment because the scanner system provides an easy way to accept them, and because Flexa offers a real-time network to clear the transactions. (Gemini takes care of the backend operations, and the merchant typically receives the cash equivalent of whatever crypto amount the consumer paid).

According to Flexa CEO, Tyler Spalding, the appeal for merchants is a chance to lower the commission fees they pay to existing payment networks. Spalding, who is a veteran of the gift card exchange service Raise, added that crypto payments also offer stores a way to experiment with new types of blockchain-based customer rewards.

Fortune contacted six of the retailers participating in the Flexa service, including Whole Foods, and none of them provided a comment. According to a person familiar with the project, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the reason for the silence is because the crypto payments are still an experiment, and retailers don’t want to discuss them until they gain a better understanding of the technology and consumer demand.

On the consumer side, the Flexa system opens the door to an easy way to spend crypto at stores around town. This doesn’t mean, though, that more than a handful of people will actually do this—especially given that other payment methods work perfectly well.

But there is also the volatility issue. The value of the Bitcoin in my Spedn app has jumped around about 5% today alone, which is fine for an investment but not for a day-to-day payment tool.

According to the Winklevoss twins, the volatility problem can be mitigated by using the Gemini Dollar, which is pegged to keep its value very close to $1 U.S. In an interview with Fortune, they predicted Flexa’s ease-of-use combined with the stability of the Gemini Dollar will lead to more widespread use—especially among the growing number of people who appreciate the technology behind cryptocurrency.

“The idea of living on crypto is now a reality. You can now do it,” said Tyler Winklevoss. “For the consumer, it amounts to being crypto conscious. It’s like being green.”

Meanwhile, Flexa’s Spalding told Fortune the company will provide developer kits to other companies that want to incorporate the scanner payment technology into their own apps.

For now, it’s too soon to say if the big name merchants who signed on this week—other names include Petco, Lowe’s and Office Depot—will still be taking the payments this time next year. But, given the history of crypto payments, this week’s announcement feels like a breakthrough.

Update: Flexa has pulled Starbucks from its list of merchants in the demo app, notwithstanding this recent picture of the Winklevoss twins appearing to use it in store.

http://fortune.com/2019/05/13/bitcoin-comes-to-whole-foods-major-retailers-in-coup-for-digital-currency/

....

This addresses some of the frequent questions raised in response to this.

Quote
Meanwhile, for consumers, using cryptocurrency as an everyday payment mechanism has proved impractical because of crypto’s volatility—a wallet with $100 worth of Bitcoin at the start of the week may only be worth $80 by week’s end

Volatility is often cited in regard to bitcoin or crypto currency based payment systems. We have seen payment processors attach a 15 minute time limit for crypto payments to be intialized in an effort to cut down on potential effects related to volatility. This article introduces yet another method in regard to the winklevoss stablecoin being pegged to the dollar which also has the potential to limit volatility inherent in crypto retailer purchases.

It seems these crypto payments are in beta testing. Many are unaware crypto is implemented in their retail system due to it being incorporated into the scanner hardware with no additional training or updates necessary.

Such a great news to all of us! . However, do you think that it depends on the country that some chains above accept bitcoin?, because i completely don't see the sign of accepting bitcoin of Starbucks in my country, it's such a big pitty. Actually, the number of businesses that accept bitcoin is gaining more popularity in many places in the world, although the governments in some countries still have not recognized it officially. Hence, i think it's a good sign for bitcoin to be soon accepted.

It's really a good news because they are also trying to accept the Bitcoin for the future because they already know the value of Bitcoin in the future so if they are accepting it right now then they had the huge chance to get their profit mostly to be a good value in their future that's why it is acceptable.

I'm sure the merchants are well aware of what Flexa is doing. According to Gemini, these payments are much cheaper than credit cards and also much safer in terms of chargebacks. I'd say those are really huge incentives for merchants to sign on.

I do not know if that is true. The payment is made thru third party app which means that business establishments may not be even receiving bitcoin or crypto at all. The buyer can be spending bitcoin but it can just go thru the third party app and the app will pay the business establishments with fiat.

The Flexa Network Protocol works as an intermediary for each payment. It pays the merchant in cash and then goes through the slower process of taking payment from your cryptocurrency wallet.

But this is still good for adoption because normal users can be encouraged to get bitcoin for investment and they can easily spend it thru the app if they want to.

Market stability can only be achieve if manipulation will be eliminated which is not likely to happen soon, but let's see how these good news will affect us.

I have long heard the news that Starbucks Accept Bitcoin is not new news and in my opinion this is not too much effect on the development of the price of bitcoin and other altcoins.
Just one factor is not enough to really contribute to the development of bitcoin, but it still has its own little effect, for bitcoin to get to a very high development stage, it requires different parts to come together and jointly make the project to succeed.

So if this people are all coming one after the other, it will really be a stepping stone and with time, the market will slowly and steadily be gaining its ground in the world to the point that adoption rate will become so high. We might think all these retail companies are not significant, but they are the ones that really have a very sound working project that will make the value of bitcoin healthy and stable.

At least those big establishments or merchants are now accepting crypto,
Soon even the small business would follow them and it would only tale some time before every business or merchants accept it.
Now it is going to be used as a regular currency for payment.

more and more large companies are following the starbuck trail, of course it will be better for the development of cryptocurrency, there will be many other companies that join in so that it spreads to small companies, so that the development will be even more massive

Yes, I saw some news regarding a Toronto man losing like $2k using Mcdonald's app. But the main point is that this technology is still very young. Lots of growing up pains, just like we witnessed in couple of days. So I would say give at least 2 years for some adjustments to be made here. On the bright side, if no one will take this steps, then we will not know what will be the effect, so there will be lots of "if's", at least we have the answers now.

This gradual development are the real factors in this world that will guarantee the future of cryptocurrency, now that we have companies like this already integrating the payment program into their system, adoption will easily be achieved, and as crypto adoption continues to spread across the nation with big and smaller companies, there won’t be any need for government to use regulation any more for adoption, regulation will just simply be for government to have some certain control of the crypto program. I am sure in a matter of time; we will have at least 60% of retail companies fully accept bitcoin as payment.

Maybe this isn't what Bitcoin purists have wanted, because those apps are just intermediaries, similar to Bitpay, but this is the Bitcoin adoption that we have today, and if people will be using it, maybe eventually they'll switch to Lightning and direct Bitcoin transactions without any middlemen, just like Satoshi wanted. I'm very curious to look at the stats in one year, to see how many people have tried this payment method, how many actively use it, transaction volumes, etc.

This is actually a very good news, but do you really think bitcoin is actually a good crypto currency to be used as a form of making payment for small stuffs like a coffee? The fee right now is very high. Pay low fee and keep waiting for more than an hour for confirmation? That's a lot in fee or waiting time just for a cup of coffee.

Don't say this is good news if we don't know the truth, first make sure whether this news is really real or just bullshit. of course if that really happens surely the price of the coin will soar because this is good news and now coin coins are only up a few percent.

Acceptance happens through a legacy POS terminal, so while you can pay with Bitcoin there, they don't actually know you do so. The only thing you do is scan the QR they show you to finalize the transaction.

Overall, it doesn't really matter how merchants accept it as long as we can exchange our coins for their goods, because that's how money should work. We can't expect merchants to directly accept Bitcoin themselves.

I'm not sure if this will have an effect on the price. The number of people actually spending their coins is still negligible, so don't expect anything. All eyes are now pointed at the block halving, not merchant adoption.

Unfortunatelly the ebay rumors are fake news. But it's always good to see more businesses adopting bitcoin and helping this currency to become even more acknowledged for more people in the world. However it won't lead to mass adoption as the customers of the mentioned shops are a very select group of people. If to increase the adoption is the goal, popular shops must accept it as well.

Does it allow spending bitcoin outside of their affiliated stores? It would suck if I HAD to spend my bitcoin on Starbucks.

How much are the fees, and how are they structured? Do I pay to deposit or withdraw or spend, etc. ?

You can see a list of stores here (https://dailyhodl.com/2019/05/14/crypto-milestone-30476-mainstream-stores-to-accept-bitcoin-btc-bitcoin-cash-bch-and-ethereum-eth/). No user fees. I believe Flexa is just integrating their payment network with existing POS machines, those that already enable you to use your phone to tap and pay. The problem is the Spedn app is iPhone only now, not Android and according to Flexa TOS (https://flexa.network/legal/terms) any user can only use the app to buy $100 of merchandise per week. That is better than nothing but pretty limited. Hopefully they will raise the limits once the program matures.

I think the Bitpays and Flexas are a necessary intermediary stage for Bitcoin's usage in commerce.

The biggest obstacle to overcome is getting businesses to hold BTC. Despite the hoarding incentive that the limited supply bakes into the economy, I think there are lots of people who want to spend coins, especially after significant capital gains.

But merchants have overheads and supply lines that need to be paid in fiat. Very few will be like Overstock, accepting BTC and even holding it despite the volatility. This makes sense since their businesses don't ordinarily involve currency speculation.

Over time (and this could take decades to be realized on a very large scale) this problem will evaporate as businesses realize they can save money by accepting crypto and settling B2B with it. In these early days, using Gemini to handle the volatility aspect makes sense, but eventually retailers may want to cut those middlemen out.

It is going to be a gradual process and it may not be this particular company that will introduce bitcoin payment in your country, but other retail companies will get a signal from these ones that are already implementing it, and that is how it will gradual expand till almost all the retailers who are technology inclined also implement bitcoin payment system.

This is why we believe that the reign of bitcoin will never end as it is just starting to be known worldwide, and the next 20 years more in this cryptocurrency industries, 80% of retailers worldwide would have made bitcoin a their major digital payment coin.

Starbucks is still a hot commodity in my country, it's like a fashion statement if you are buying and holding a cup with a Starbucks sign on it,  ;D. So if they're going a Starbucks world wide acceptance of bitcoin, I'm sure it will be talk of the town and bitcoin will be known here.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, only selected stores are going to initially accept bitcoin, so perhaps just an experiment on their end and see how their market will react.

Large firms like this using bitcoin payment system is really a very good way to create awareness to the public, because in every  advert they do, most of them mentioned accepted payments, where they mention, cash, MasterCard and now bitcoin will be added to the list of payment as they constantly run their jingles.

One other thing this development will also create is demand, because what drives the value of bitcoin up is demand, the more people use bitcoin for payment in this company, the more there will be  a demand for bitcoin, which will cause the price of bitcoin to keep appreciating.

First, you cannot completely rule out the fact that some of these types of news are what contributes to why bitcoin increases sometimes, it is not the project itself but the news is what people do react to that makes them FOMO. Everyone has their own mentality and it would be wrong to change it for them, if people invest believing such factor could cause a spike in bitcoin, then fine, it doesn’t not take anything from us.

Many people with their own believe that makes them contributes to the market, do you know how many people reacted to news of tether when they had issue? Do you even know that people still reacted to Binance hacking too by linking it to a positive development of BTC, do you know that we have some people that also reacted to BSV delisting news, thinking BSV community will dump BSV for BTC, these little things that you feel does not contribute to increase of bitcoin actually does, and not just whales alone.

This is huge news, this year had been great due to development and mass adaptation news. A lot of big and well-known companies are starting to accept cryptocurrency as payment. This will further push mass adaptation and it's also a good start for other companies to start upgrading their payment system by adapting crypto as an alternative payment.
This is true. This may act somehow psychological because there are big companies who are accepting it then the other companies which may be smaller can start adopting too. The mass adaption is a good thing for crypto currency and Bitcoin, it continually create its name and so as more and more people will know about its existence. Today as the Bitcoin create a high value, the consistency of good news can be serve as the catalyst for higher value. At the same time it is not only restaurants, hotels and like are now accepting Bitcoin, there is also this online casino (https://vegascasino.io/casino/video-slots/the-dog-house?utm_source=cctdh) where you can play even with the use of you mobile phone, bet endlessly with just clicks. Aside from you enjoying the easier way of doing transactions, you will problem feel the security upon engaging through crypto.

Starbucks is not accepting bitcoin, people just found a way to pay starbucks with bitcoin while starbucks is getting fiat, the middleman there is making sure to take your bitcoin and pay starbucks fiat and keep the change that is it. That is why there is really no reason to talk about starbucks accepting bitcoin just yet, hell even mcdonalds app that gives you mcdonalds tokens are much more closer work towards crypto currency then what this is doing, this is kudos to winklevii twins but nothing else, starbucks is still not taking crypto, they used to but they cancelled it just like amazon and steam. If those three big players comes back to game and start accepting bitcoin directly then we are going to see another huge increase.

They are giants in the business industry, therefore their effect is big, but I am not sure about amazon, do you have a source to verify that amazon is into crypto?
I am very certain that the news of Amazon is absolutely a rumor, though I believe that they will also join the cryptocurrency later when they have no choice in order to stay on top of their business game too just like the same way Facebook who usually condemn cryptocurrency is now beginning to plan the introduction of their coin too.

You know sometimes, out of rumor lies the truth too, they might not have executed any projects that has link with crypto, but I am sure there must have been an inside hint of them also exploring the possibility of introducing blockchain technology into their system.

Starbucks in our area didn't accept bitcoin yet, they might accept crypto wallet converting into fiat app but not literally bitcoin. And I think it will depend on what country as well wallets available in that country to operate paying bitcoin via real establishments. We do hope it happens soon but not at this time that BTC still too volatile and unpredictable.

Maybe you guys should read the whole news first? Starbucks is not accepting bitcoin, people just found a way to pay starbucks with bitcoin while starbucks is getting fiat, the middleman there is making sure to take your bitcoin and pay starbucks fiat and keep the change that is it.

What do you expect, Starbucks to announce they are hodling all the BTC? ;D

Technically they are accepting BTC payments, just as much as they accept Mastcard or ApplePay. They just aren't holding the BTC.

It may be through a payment processor but what difference does it make to us as consumers? If you have BTC (and an Iphone), you can spend it Starbucks now. This isn't like one of these third party apps (https://www.coindesk.com/you-can-now-shop-with-bitcoin-on-amazon-using-lightning) that needs to be linked to an exchange account. Customers load Spedn with BTC, then spend it at the counter by QR code.

Starbucks seems accept bitcoin everywhere else besides my country. I think it is because of not every country is ready for such kind of turn.
Just yesterday I saw a pic of two little girls are selling maffines and accept bitcoin as well. That pic made my day. It's clear prove that somewhere bitcoin is developing and getting well known.
Hope one day such things will happen and here as well.

That is a great news, this news can attract to people to convincing invest in bitcoin. I think this a way that btc will become well-known and the popularity will spread to people. We just hoping that soon, mostly other businesses also are willing to accept bitcoin.

Yes, the greatest plus here is not the possibility to buy coffee in Starbucks for cryptocurrency now, but the confidence that such popular companies believe in the future of Bitcoin. Now, more people will invest in it.

I agree with you. They will reach more people to come to their shop, and they will promote cryptocurrency in their shop so people could start to use the cryptocurrency to buy any product they want. Besides that, the cryptocurrency will grow fast and get popular too if the company can add cryptocurrency as their payment method. And people will not just use cryptocurrency as the payment, but they could also buy a cryptocurrency for the investment.

This is huge news, this year had been great due to development and mass adaptation news. A lot of big and well-known companies are starting to accept cryptocurrency as payment. This will further push mass adaptation and it's also a good start for other companies to start upgrading their payment system by adapting crypto as an alternative payment.
this is the beginning stage lonely we have to wait for seeing lots of changes in the payment methods and online shopping is also ready to accept the payments with Bitcoin and I am waiting for the change.

This is a good news, when people starts to know that these companies are now accepting cryptocurrency for payment, they might be interested in trying it out. But the problem as that cryptocurrency is volatile so not everyone is really interested in it, no one can just get a crypto wallet and store their money in it cause they are going to lose it unless it's for the purpose of investment and they are sure that they are ready to take the risk involved in it, which is either losing your money or making profit. PayPal is another big competition, cause no one is going to use Bitcoin as long there is PayPal given there as an option

I think we should support the payment method that is used crypto, but the price is not stable but if you pay attention to the price of food it will follow for every time

with the growing number of large companies who want to trust bitcoin, of course it will have an effect on other companies and the public, especially those who are starbuck consumers. so the spread of bitcoin will be faster
It will also be more amusing to their customers to know that as they keep fund in their wallet to purchase their product, the value could even appreciate before they carry out their transaction, so they will always be happy to use bitcoin on a regular basis in companies that has introduced bitcoin to their payment list.

Their adoption is a proof now that every single retailer over the years will eventually get to accept bitcoin payment and they will all add it to the list of their payment which will create big awareness worldwide and increases the demand for bitcoin with time.

That is exactly where the problem lies, just like you said, people who wants to use it as utility coin will never keep the coin in their wallet, the point where they want to use it is when they will convert whatever they need to pay from fiat to bitcoin, and then make payment with it without further holding it in their wallet, the recipient too will not be willing to keep it in the wallet because of its volatility which will make him convert it back to fiat.

So as money is touching the market, it might also be leaving immediately too, so what we will just be seeing is volume but we may not see much increase in the value.

Can someone DL this app and try it? I'm not an iPhone user.

Thank you for your response! I had a friend download and install the app for a look. I didn't mess with it much, but I could not find a way to load the wallet with BTC. I assume it can send and receive? It would suck if I had to buy exclusively from them.

In the future, there will be many electronic payment approval services. You know, the $ 250 billion crypto market is being traded daily in the market and there will be a lot of investors holding lots of coins in their wallets. most traders are usually rich and they like to pay with their coins. This is really a good opportunity for services to get more customers when accepting payments with crypto.

That's true it's really good to every one to know this kind of news because it means many companies are appreciate the cryptocurrency and also bitcoin, maybe they know the benefit of it and the out come to the people.
Yeah this year full with suprises and adoptation of blockchain and acceptence of bitcoin really did a good job and affecting the market price really well. I do think blockchain will be really big and even microsoft are using bitcoin blockchain for identity data , yes they do know that there is a lot of benifit that could be done by bitcoin.

From what I have read, there is no way to send or receive Bitcoin at all.

The way I understand it, it works with what you have sitting in your Gemini account. The POS terminal will present you a QR code to scan, where in the background the converting happens by Gemini according to the paid amount.

This means that you don't have to ask to pay in Bitcoin, and the merchant you are purchasing an item from won't ever find out that Gemini converted Bitcoin for you in the background. They receive fiat as with any other payment.

So this just got a lot less exciting. Apparently there are AML/KYC requirements to use this app.

The way I understand it, it works with what you have sitting in your Gemini account. The POS terminal will present you a QR code to scan, where in the background the converting happens by Gemini according to the paid amount.

I'm pretty sure it's not linked to a Gemini account. Gemini is just holding custody of the currencies you deposit to your Spedn account. Otherwise yes, Gemini is converting your balance in the background when spent at the POS terminal.

according to Flexa TOS (https://flexa.network/legal/terms) any user can only use the app to buy $100 of merchandise per week

Wow, that's quite limited. I had wondered how Gemini could handle the potentially huge volume from these big name retailers and I guess they're worried about that too.

Thank you for the explanation, first I read it seemed to be able to immediately accept bitcoin, but it didn't. even so, at least with steps like this, including campaigning for bitcoin for everyday life
