Title: [General] How to block someone?
Post by: mys5droid on July 03, 2019, 09:10:04 PM
Hi

I have a user from Discord who decided to stalk me to this platform to harass me more in attempts to get me banned.

The user made insults of me when I simply asked for help, and then when I verbally defended myself starts crying and tries to get me banned on every platform they can find me on (which is harassment)

I have looked all over for a "block" option, but I cannot find it?

I've blocked them on Discord, but how do I block a user on this forum?

Thanks

Click on "Profile" at the top.

On the left hand side, first click on "Personal Message Options" and add their username to the ignorelist. Save your changes. This prevents the user from private messaging you.

Then click on "Ignore user options" and add their username to this ignorelist. Save your changes. This hides all their posts from you so you don't have to read them.

You can't block this user from following you around the forum and posting in the same threads you do. However, if they are doing this continually, and doing it maliciously, it would fall under "Trolling", which is against the rules. In this case, you could report the user to the moderators for further action.

You can also make threads which you start "self moderated". There is a check box on the page when you are starting a new thread. This would allow you to delete any posts from said user in your own threads.

Just to clear you, the offenses that will result to a temporary or permanent ban are very clear that means no one except yourself can get you banned. Having an argument with another user or use of insulting words won't get you banned although they're not welcomed on the forum. Do as @o_e_l_e_o has suggested and you'll be just fine. I can see you're not familiar with forum rules (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0) take sometime to familiarize yourself with them so you won't misinterpret them.

Only the moderators/administrators have the right to ban/block a particular user, one cannot block a fellow user on the forum, it'll be absurd if that's possible, this is no personal social media platform.Though just as has been suggested you can put a user on ignore and be wouldn't be able to see posts from them.

But to me I think the best option is to open an anonymous account(alt accounts are allowed)that this stalker of yours wouldn't be aware of, this way you can operate on the forum freely, he doesn't have to know your username, and it's very easy to do that in here.

There's very little you can do unfortunately, besides the "ignore" option. Even if there's a "block" option, remember that your harasser can always create a new account after his/her account get's banned, so blocking every single one would just be a waste of your time. Also, take note that your harasser can stalk your posts and threads here on Bitcointalk without creating an account.

Simply just report the posts being made by the person, and you should be fine.

Why would you want to block someone?)
Maybe read the main topic.

Next to the tips others have already given, it *might* also be a reasonable idear to add your attacker to your trustlist, preceded with a "~". At this moment, while you both are new to the forum, this doesn't matter the slightest bit... But rejecting him/her from your trustlist will make sure that you indicate to the forum that you don't trust any ratings left by this individual, and you would not like to see him end up in DT. It's a longshot that this will ever happen, and if it does it's defenately not sure that your rejection will prevent him from ending up in DT, but i'd still do this out of principle.... Just in case.
Only do this if you don't trust the ratings left by your troll tough ;)

So, in your case, go to
"profile" => "Trust" => "Trust settings"
Add
~Trollname
in the form, and click on "update".

In addition to the quote above, when you Ignore the user you mention it is true that you won't be see the user's post in this forum but the user you ignore can still see your post or replies in the thread you have replied or posted. The "Ignore User" is to help you avoid that forum user's post in this forum.

Since you find it difficult to block the user, why can't you ignore his or her message. You must not reply every message someone sent to you. If you keep ignoring his message, he'll get tired of chatting  you up
