Title: Heating my Flat with mining Rig
Post by: Tooth on July 13, 2019, 01:56:28 PM
Hi guys,
I live in a Flat which is has electric heating.
I thought that i can reduce my heating bill in the winter by using a Mining Rig since it shouldn't matter if i use a GPU or a space heater.

The plan isn't to heat only with GPUs but i could support the normal heating with them.

That do you Guys think of that idea?

Yes that is possible. I am sure you could heat a small room with the help of a mining rig. Not sure if any health issues could arise from sleeping in a room with so much computer equipment and hardware though.

I managed to find a thread from bitcointalk where this is also discussed so maybe you can get some ideas from it.

I think its a good idea, but noise might be a problem.

Its good like they say but its not good for your health I think ,using heats generated from your mining rigs as a kind of warmer might be dangerous to health ,you don't want to risk that I bet

what kind of danger? it's just heat produced by the equipment, nothing else
but maybe its low/high frequency sound can affect your hearing or other internal organs

oh yes, its possible to do it... but don't put it in your bedroom. its to noisy and i guarantee you that you wont sleep well anymore ;D i had mine a long time in my dining room and i never had to use my heater through the whole winter... of course, i turned it off when i got visitors :D

You should calculate the expected payback time on the rig before buying one. If it doesn't pay for itself during winter, and you'll still need to run it during summer, your electricity bill (and room temperature) goes up.

This topic had been discussed a lot in both Mining and Mining (Altcoins) sections. After reading those discussions, one can come up with the following conclusions.

Yes, it's possible to use the heat for heating technical premises like greenhouses, barns etc., or in rooms aimed at dehydrating fruits and vegetables, but you can't use it for heating living accommodations because of the noise mining rigs produce. One person managed to build a ventilation system so that the heat from the miners in his basement would go straight to his living room, and it seems that that's the only solution for heating living spaces with the heat from mining rigs.

Here is the solution to this problem https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5113192   But I think the price is very high

I know a lot of people who are doing this in a much bigger house, but they have a separate "noise proof" rooms to help with the loud noise that the extra cooling cause. <Normally a scullery or a study or a guest room>  I tried this for a while, but the noise was really an issue and running a air-conditioning system 24/7, pushed up the expenses on electricity and reduced the profit.

Now, I do this on a much smaller scale with very expensive near silent cooling fans and I re-use some of the heat to cool the house. In Summer, this becomes a issue again, because I have to extract the heat that I cannot use.  ::)

I'm using GPU rigs for heating for the past 2 years and I'm really happy. The heating is basically free in the winter. I live in a small flat around 45 sq m and 1 rig with 6 GPU is fine. With 2 it is super warm. The noise from the GPUs is not high and we've already used to it. Just choose low noise cards, and you'll be fine.

Only do it if you already have a mining rig. Buying a mining rig to heat your house is ridiculous. You are better off buying solar panels and reducing your monthly cost that way. If you already have amining machine then, by all means, go for it. It will keep you warm if you keep the room sealed.

Have you already broken even with your miner? If so that is great. Otherwise, you eventually will in a few years. What are you mining?
