Title: is there any way to locate an address i sent btc to?
Post by: barakz13 on July 17, 2019, 08:07:36 AM
hi, i am new here, i just deposited to a gambling site (made few deposits there already, very known one) 160~$ worth of BTC. i tried at first then it didn't work cause i had to download the wallet new version (4.0.0 of Electrum, had alot of experience with the wallet before the update, mostly without any problems, certainly not this big). once i downloaded it i tried once more and it worked. never received the money in my account. contacted the support of the site, they told me they never received it and gave me another address i should have sent it to. do you know how to locate that wallet? and if i succeed, any way to redeem it?

this is the address: 1GFBbjafJ12qr8j3z9UyycEzrqKSfdPyUu

please, any help would be appreciate, thanks

The latest version of Electrum is 3.3.8 (https://electrum.org/#download). You have been a victim of a phishing attack (https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/4968). The funds are probably gone to the hacker's address already, there is no way to get them back sadly.

thank you very much for your reply, unfortunately i was able to figure it out as soon as i wrote the original post. i feel so childish, I was always able to prevent me falling into these kind of scams. i guess it was a matter of time it gets to me. thank you again and hope both and others be aware of those kind of scams in the future.

It's no consolation for you, but you are victim of attack which has been ongoing since the end of last year, and it is still taking coins from people who run old versions of Electrum and who are not aware that Electrum should not be updated in a way you just do. I wish there is some way that developers of Electrum can prevent this from happening, but as long as the old versions are on users devices, there will be such cases.

If you want to avoid such things in future, maybe is time to start thinking in another way. You can reduce risk of losing your coins with hardware wallet, which are not 100% safe, but compared with desktop wallets they are complete new level of security.

Charge to experience! You might thought that you wont be victimized by these phishing attacks because you are confident that you know everything enough when it comes to security

but this proves out that there are things which you havent known yet.Always verify and make it as a habit.Electrum doesnt have 4.0 version and sorry for your loss.
Electrum.org is the only place where you should download.

That scam popup comes out only on old/outdated Electrum wallet. You have to get the latest version, but you have to get it from the official website https://electrum.org
Also it won't hurt if you check the signature (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1836004.0).

If you have the latest Electrum, please make a screenshot with that popup.

i think it worked thank you. if it say "unconfirmed" does it mean the receiving wallet didn't accept/receive the btc? if so, how/when will i receive it back?

Unconfirmed means that the transaction is not saved into the blockchain yet, so it's not permanent yet. (edit: and yes, the target wallet didn't receive it yet; maybe it can see it, but surely it means nothing for now.)
Depending on the tx fee you've used and how busy the network is, when one of the following blocks is mined, your transaction may be included and will be saved into the blockchain. Then it'll start increasing the number of confirmations.
If your fee was very small and the network very busy, it will be rejected, but that'll take a number of days (I think that's 3 days, but I'm not 100% sure).

A wallet can't reject a transaction or refuse to receive funds.
If it says unconfirmed transaction, it means the transaction hasn't been included in a block yet, it is still in the mempool.

Fees are the main factor that incentivize miners to include a transaction in a block. The lower the fees are, the longer you will have to wait for your transaction to get confirmed.

If the transaction is not confirmed yet and you are in a hurry, think of replacing it by fee.
Since you are sending it to your self you can also do a CPFP.

When he told us about the transaction, the best fee was about 50 sat/vbyte. Now it's 23. If the transaction still not confirmed, he should post the tx id so we can look and give advises based on the reality.
