Title: Massive spam bot attack underway
Post by: suchmoon on July 28, 2019, 03:01:28 PM
Edit: Seems to be done for now. Lasted about an hour.

See screenshot below from altcoin ANNs but other boards (e.g. Bitcoin Discussion) are getting infected too. The ones with the "_XY" naming scheme are all bots. Promoting some sort of trading signal or shit like that. One post per account (possibly more after they wait out the 6-minute delay) and they have a lot of those accounts, seem to have been registered two months ago. I have reported a few posts but perhaps a better approach would be for an admin or a global mod to take a look at it on a larger scale.

They even spammed the "Advertising spam is not allowed (https://archive.is/GpUCP)" thread ;D

Known affected boards:

Bitcoin Discussion (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.0)
Mining (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=160.0)
Announcements (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=159.0)

Just keep reporting them, but there's an infestation of them for sure. It's times like these when I wish all new accounts were shadowbanned until their first post or so has been verified.

Globals can't do much either other than keep nuking them but we do have a tool to spot probable newbie alts now so that's helpful and we can pre-emptively nuke a lot of these but other than that people will just have to keep reporting them.

maybe the mod has to work extra-super to eradicate pests, it is not imagined if this keeps happening spam,
This 100% must be reported, the more days do not change, the more destructive.
I don't know what happened to this forum and then spam continued to arrive.
It seems that admin has to tighten every newcomer to this forum, for example limiting posts to certain parts of the post board.

10 people who make good forums, 1000 who damage.

Seems to have stopped - no new bot posts in the ANN board for the last half hour or so. Not sure about the other boards.

it stopped in the ANN board but now the bots moved to Mining (Altcoins) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=160.0) board
in less than 1 minutes the bot make 6~10 post in the old thread there and you can see that from page 1 ~ 6 all of the latest post is from the spam bot

I'm just using the Patrol link coupled with suchmoon's reporting script to report them all in real time. Hopefully the mods can be just as quick with nuking them all.

Edit: They are averaging about 15 posts per minute by the looks of things.

Edit 2: Nothing new on Patrol for the last 10 minutes. Maybe they're done?

Edit :
100 accounts has been reported now. (My new goal achieved)

It seems that they don't have too many accounts to spam, or still don't use all accounts they have. I saw some spam accounts posted their 5 or 6 spam posts. I think they will be reported and wiped out soon, with current limited spam accounts.

No new bot posts in Patrol in the last 5 minutes, well done everyone, let's clean up the older posts if there are any remaining.

Hopefully I didn't just jinx it...

It stopped for now and can be cleaned up via regular mod reports. It's a relatively costly way to spam - all those accounts have been burned.

~1700 posts
~660 users
only 22 still remain unbanned and I just reported 5 of them

The link was added to the anti-spam bot and it removed a total 4103 posts. ;)

Awesome. I did notice a few times posts disappearing before I could report them :)

Well that would then penalise Yobit and anyone else talking about them (good of bad). The question is, was Yobit directly behind this as really anyone could have done it and even someone out to maliciously hurt Yobit by doing such a thing.

Depends. Running a bot to create an army of these would cost little to nothing other than maybe if they get proxy banned and they have to pay the fee. Newbie accounts are worthless and these were obviously just used as fodder so they didn't really lose any value with the accounts and were obviously created just for spamming purposes.

Crazy. I'd love to know how many I manually nuked. It was getting really tedious. You nuked one account then there'd be 2-5 more on the possible alts page. Then you'd nuke them and the same thing happened on each so it seemed never-ending.
