Title: [Pool closed. Withdrawals closed] litecoin.miningpool.com,% donated to charity
Post by: froggy on November 13, 2011, 05:45:39 PM
Yay, litecoin.miningpool.com is back up and running - everything has been reprogrammed and we're now a PPLNS pool! Everything from the old version of the pool has now been reset to zero to enable a fresh start.  If you were a member of the old pool, you may need to sign up again.  The best thing to do is try signing in with your old details, but if this doesn't work, just complete the quick sign-up form again.

We've got a new mascot and everything is set to go....

Hop on in, the water is lovely in a friendly new Litecoin mining pool at http://litecoin.miningpool.com (http://litecoin.miningpool.com)

Join up and you'll not only be able to benefit from the regularity of pool mining, but your PC's efforts will also help toward positive and charitable causes....

Features:

Currently a zero percent fee.

Members are paid based on the full value of a block, including transaction fees included in that block.

I'm hoping that Donations will cover the server costs for now.

At the end of the first full month (in other words on or around 14th December...updated - this will now be some time in January) 60% of the first month's donations will be distributed to a number members of the of the Bitcoin/Litecoin etc community - there are a lot of good folks who have put much work into foundations on which we're all building, and I think it would be nice for us all to give a little back in a simple way,

After the first month, I'm aiming that 10% of donations will go to charitable causes each subsequent month.  As well as being a good thing to do, this may get charities to start to adopt Litecoin....approach your favourite charity, ask if they accept Litecoins as donations and post about it here - they may get chosen.

Sooo...keep those donations high.  On joining, a default donation of 4% is set.  You are free to increase or decrease this.  As well as the good causes, the donations will be essential to build up the server power as we grow, so pleeease be nice :-)

More nice stuff:

Quick sign-up and simple to start mining - miner setup details are at http://litecoin.miningpool.com/start-earning-litecoins.php

https enabled.  Currently a self-signed cerificate but I'm intending to get a proper one in the next few days.  Meanwhile if you don't mind the annoying pop-up warning, I'd recommend using  https://litecoin.miningpool.com for security.

Passwords are salted and hashed before being added to database.

Fair system of PPLNS earnings (pay per last N shares). This discourages pool hoppers whilst still rewarding members fairly. Whenever a block is found, the pool's last "N" shares are looked at (currently N is set to 5,000).  You are rewarded based on the number of your own shares that you found among those N shares.  In other words, based on say the current N value of 5,000:

Your reward = your shares/pool total valid shares in last 5,000 shares * block value.

Choice of manual payments or automated payments...Automated payments run every 40 minutes if your balance is above your chosen minimum payout.

Long Polling to give a nice low stale rate.

Jumpy (the server) is waiting to greet you.

Best wishes and happy mining!

froggy

I've got my main rig pointing back at you.

Good to hear you're back up. My login was the same, and everything's working.

Thanks Vanderbleek, welcome back.  Good to hear things are running smoothly your end.  A big hello too to all who have started mining again at the pool already.  I can hardly wait until we find our first block!

Well, I can happily say after 53 blocks found so far, that everything is working perfectly on this reprogrammed version of the pool....yay!!!  The Missing Blocks problem which happened on the old version of the pool has showed no sign of raising its head, and the allocation of payouts is looking totally fine.

I've had to change the payout transaction fee to 0.1 tonight to allow for the new changes in Litecoin's transaction fees, caused by the dust spam, as detailed by coblee in https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=47417.msg626707#msg626707 .

Our average number of shares between our blocks found so far has been 8985.64, compared to an expected global average of about 9500 based on the difficulty when we started if I recall right, and a current expected average 10,959 based on current difficulty, so we've been a lucky pool so far.  I'm sure it's our new mascot bringing us that luck you know :)

Sorry for any short downtimes of a minute or so today.  I've been trying to fix something which had been causing a very large stale rate.  I'm not exactly sure what it was but something was causing lots of "target-miss" stales from pushpool.  Tried lots of things today to ensure long-polling was working fine, and eventually a simple restart of jumpy (the server) seems to have finally fixed things.  Pool efficiency rate is gradualy increasing now as the "target-miss" stales fall out of the statistics.  Fall-out should complete in about an hour and a half's time, so as long as everything goes OK we should be back to a proper efficiency rate by around 10.00 GMT.

If you're using the same cgminer you do to mine bitcoins, it won't work with Litecoins -- they have different algorithms. You need to use the same miners as you would for Tenebrix or Fairbrix -- https://github.com/Lolcust/Tenebrix-miner (https://github.com/Lolcust/Tenebrix-miner)

Not to be pedantic, but I hope you mean salted and hashed, not salted and encrypted.  Big difference.

Almost - we only took 2 hours 12 minutes from the and on block 147 until block 151 was found.  It only took a very nicely low number of shares for each of those last 4 blocks...Yayyy!....Way less than expected probability.  It looks like your new 1090t (impressive stuff!) joined in with the action at exactly the right time :)

btc_artist, sorry, my bad terminology - the passwords are salted and sha256'd, so yes I should have written hashed.  I've just changed the top post right now....thanks for correcting me there. :)

The first awards to good causes were scheduled for this coming week, but seeing as Christmas is coming (and I've been delayed a bit too), the first awards will now be made between Christmas day and New Year's Day.

Thanks for pointing out the thread, terrytibbbs.  It seems that manual payouts from the pool were taking a few seconds to send (possibly because of the dust-spam in the wallet from a couple of weeks ago).  I've been able to replicate this myself and if anyone pressed the payout button a second time before the first payout had completed, a second payout of their balance would send (which also would therefore create a negative overall balance on their pool account, as they would had received the balance twice).

I've deactivated manual payouts for now to stop the possibility of this from happening again - all members can still use the automated payout system which makes payouts every 40 minutes.  :)

I'm going to increase the server resources a bit (which will be about 5 or 10 minutes downtime at an estimate) and then I'll look into that long block.

Post by: froggy on January 06, 2012, 12:45:35 AM
Okies, just checked and the outcome is probably the reverse of what may have been feared - the pool has actually paid out for more blocks than have been found.  Since the start, 320 blocks have been paid  (at the time I started writing this post)  but we've only actually found 316 blocks  (at the time I started writing this post).  In other words the pool has been 4 blocks too generous to members.

I'm not sure why this has happened.  We did get a lot of dust spam when the dustpamming happened a few weeks ago.  This may have glitched things (hopefully just temporarily).  The wallet is quite large as a result of the spam (156 Megabytes) so I'll have to keep an eye on things to check that the pool doesn't get over-generous again.

The long block itself (132,797 shares) could have been a slight statistical anomaly.  Based on current difficulty, the average number of shares in a block should be approximately 18,057.  If my recall of basic mathematical probability is correct, this would mean that probability (p) of not finding a block in 1 share would be 1-(1/18057) , ie 0.99994461981503018220080855070056

Therefore probability of not finding a block in 132797 shares = 0.99994461981503018220080855070056 ^ 132797,
which is 1/1563.2559503291552340608534314844

Seeing as we've found 316 blocks (at the time I started writing this post) we can take this further and say the probability of this not happening in 1 block = 1-(1/1563.2559503291552340608534314844)
which = 0.99936030948752221763835994466282

Therefore the probability of it not happening in our 316 blocks =   0.99936030948752221763835994466282 ^ 316 , which = 0.81692590176193059890347301959426

So the probability of it having happened = 1- 0.81692590176193059890347301959426
which = 0.18307409823806940109652698040574 , or 1 in 5.4622691556268153974020504585354

Therefore although it was quite a horribly long block, the probability of it happening in our 316 blocks so far is not as hugely-wildly unlikely may seem.

If I've got any of the mathematics wrong by the way, please feel free to correct me anyone :)

Sorry that the pool is down at the moment.  Litecoind is falling over and failing to start because of such a large wallet.dat, caused by past spam dust.  I'll be fixing this with a new wallet.dat but need to get the litecoins transferred out of the old one to new a wallet on the server using my own pc to open the pool's old wallet and send the transactions to the pool's new wallet.

On a good point, I checked out the blocks paid vs blocks found again a couple of days ago and the figures actually do tally exactly apart from the first ever block.    My original thoughts in my 6th January post that the pool had been 4 blocks too generous didn't take into consideration 5 orphaned blocks which were not paid.

The pool missed out the very first block because the way I programmed the pool accidentally requires more than one transaction in the wallet before the pool records a block as found. so round one was actually the second block found as there were no transactions when the first block was found.  I'll be apportioning 50 litecoins among those who contributed shares in Round one once the pool is back up and running to make up for this.

The new wallet shouldn't miss out any blocks, as it'll already have one transaction to start with when I send the old wallet's balance to it.

Hippety-hop, the pool is back with a nice new wallet, clean and free of all of that horrible dust spam (yuck!).  Part of the problem also seems to have been a huge amount of actual email spam that was clogging the server's hard drive too - 8 gigabytes of the stuff in the "postmaster" email account!  I've got a cronjob running to delete any more spam going in there to stop that from happening again.

I've also allocated the Litecoins from round zero as follows, based on the shares earned in the first ever round:

Total PPLNS shares in rounds 0 to 1 (inclusive)= 4808

Coins awarded for missed "block zero"
partyhard.......1471 shares....... 15.297420965058 Litecoins
fungus.......823 shares....... 8.5586522462562 Litecoins
paladin.......676 shares....... 7.0299500831947 Litecoins
vanderbleek.......646 shares....... 6.7179700499168 Litecoins
P4man.......644 shares....... 6.6971713810316 Litecoins
figroll.......205 shares....... 2.1318635607321 Litecoins
froggy.......127 shares....... 1.3207154742097 Litecoins
effayy.......113 shares....... 1.1751247920133 Litecoins
monhon123.......103 shares....... 1.0711314475874 Litecoins

Total coins awarded....50

With that done, the pool has paid out perfectly.

Okies folks, please jump back in for round 341 - the water's fine....and no longer dusty :)

If I understand this right, according to PPLNS the best time to mine would be in the last 5k shares(yes I know it's impossible to determine when this will be)

This is getting to be a very looooooooooong block.

Yes, as long as you have shares in the last 5000 you'll get a share of the block mined.

I've just checked the wallet and we've actually found 4 blocks since the new wallet was created.  I've had to input the first block from the new wallet into the database manually (round 341) and the pool has now caught up with the other three blocks automatically now.

This seems to be a similar (but slightly different) situation to when the first ever block (round zero) was found.  If things go the same way as before, everything should now run smoothly after this first manual push-off.

Manual awards for round 341 were as follows:

Total PPLNS shares in rounds 340 to 344 (inclusive)= 19875

Coins awarded for missed block
fungus.......4378 shares....... 11.035864150943 Litecoins

Hello tommyl - you need to input a Payment Address on your Account Details page for your Litecoins to be sent. :)

Once you've done that, payouts should be every 40 minutes as long as your "Current Confirmed balance" (shown on the left hand panel on the site when you're logged on) is greater than your "Automatic Payout" minimum (shown in your "Account Details" page).

Apologies by the way to everyone for the downtime earlier today - caused by more email spam clogging up one of the logs.

Sorry about that - more email spamming going on which brought things to a halt. I've put more bandages around the email system and thinking of just blocking all email....at the moment the bandages mean I'm not getting any email from the site anyway.  Very annoying that people can be so destructive.

No, to compile it just use CFLAGS="-O3", that's enough.

First off, new to the pool, thanks for hosting it!

That said - I have a help/feature request...

Any way to change the password and/or name for a worker?  Or just disable worker PW checking altogether (if someone else wants to mine for me, they have my blessing! ;D )

I realize I could retire a worker and just make a new one, but it seems silly to clutter up your DB with stale workers just because I accidentally hit "Add" a bit prematurely.

Thanks!

Welcome to the pool, pla.  I'm a bit dozy tonight but if you give me a day or two I'll get something organised to enable worker passwords to be changed.

We seem to have hopped over that 1Mh/s barrier by the way...1.041 Megahashes per second at the moment!

Worker passwords can now be changed.  Just click on the "Change Worker Password" button beside any of your workers on your Account Details page and you can update their password.

Over the last few weeks I've been privately messaging certain people for their Litecoin addresses.  These are people to who the pool will be making its first Good Causes donations.  I think I've receive replies from everyone who will reply by now, so I'm aiming to make the first donations in a week or so.

Please add "Instant Payout" button for transferring the available balance. It is probably a good idea to set some type of limit for number of transfers in last 24 h or some lunatics will abuse it. 4?

Hello EskimoBob...There was an Instant payout button previously but this was removed as there was an issue with people being able to pay themselves twice (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=54665.0).

Instead, the Automated payouts go out every 40 minutes, so if you set the "Automatic Payout" amount to 1 LTC, your full available balance (as long as it's over 1 LTC) will be sent to you on the next 40 minute payout schedule. :)

The pool has just made its first round of donations to Good Causes.  Check out our Donations to Good Causes (http://litecoin.miningpool.com/donations.php) page for full details.  :)

I'll aim to do the next round of donations in a couple of months' time or so. If you have favourite charity, why not contact them to see if they'll accept Litecoins.  If they do and they place a Litecoin address on their webpage for donations, please feel free to nominate them in this thread for a possible future donation from the Pool.  Let's spread the word about Litecoin being a convenient way to give, and do some good in the world at the same time.

The pool's overall statistics can now be obtained in JSON API format at http://litecoin.miningpool.com/totalstats-api.php .  Statistics are updated every 60 seconds.  For those who are compiling charts and statistics of different pools, this should be a nicer way to obtain the pool's data rather than having to scrape the litecoin-statistics.php page. :)

Thanks to pooler for the inspiration for the page.

I'm posting on the behalf of burnside, who is currently locked in Newbie Jail.

I'm on litecoin.miningpool.com, my account states the following:

My Confirmed Lifetime Earnings: 9982.72059284005 LTC

Amount paid out to date: 358.75886165 LTC

Current Confirmed balance: 9623.9617311901 LTC

I have automatic payout set to 25 ltc.  So I'm having trouble figuring out why the 9600 ltc's haven't been paid out.

Did you enter a Litecoin address in your Account Details page?

Thanks.

Yup, I have received the 358 ltc.

Eeek, I've just checked the database and in a number of rounds, which seem to have started 22 May, the pool has over-allocated litecoins to what appears to be (from first checks) all miners mining in those rounds.  As a result the pool doesn't have enough litecoins to pay out 9623 currently.  You're one of those who was overallocated litecoins, burnside so your final true figure will be less than 9626.

I'm taking the pool down and will try to work out correct allocations of litecoins over the weekend. Mining may not come back but once the correct allocations have been worked out I'll get the site back up so that people can withdraw their balances. It looks like this is going to bankrupt my own litecoin balance and I'm going to have to buy a good few litecoins for this on top.  Something similar happened in the first version of the pool but I though that I'd fixed things.  Sadly it appears bugs have returned.  I think it may be time to call it a day.

I can't seem to log into the interface right now to give you exact numbers, but I suspected something might be out of wack.  I had only been mining about 24 hours and I could see near the top that it was saying I had mined XXX amount in the last 24 hours, which was like 1/3 or 1/4 of the total balance.

In any case, go ahead and take my whole balance as a donation.  It's only 24 hrs of mining, and it sounds like it may help you balance things out.

Wow, thanks Burnside - that'll help hugely.  I've taken the whole site down for now but will make it available again (without actual mining) for final withdrawals at the weekend (I'll keep it open to give members the chance to withdraw for a couple of weeks or so).  Not sure what I'll do with the site after that.

Sounds like it may cost more to run it than it brings in?

I have to be honest, I'm very green when it comes to (bit|lite)coin, how hard is it to run a mining op?

Title: Re: [POOL] litecoin.miningpool.com,PPLNS now,0 % fee,% of donations to charity
Post by: froggy on May 31, 2012, 09:37:08 PM
I've been running it on 2 nodes at vps.net (originally plans were to use more nodes, but I had a pay cut in my day job, so had to cut down to 2 nodes to minimise outgoings).  You're very correct - even at just two nodes costing £28.00 (UK pounds) per month the monthly cost for those nodes has still been far more than the pool ever brought in.

Between November and the end of April the total donations in to the pool were about 1950 litecoins (sincere thanks to those who donated).  From this, about 1168 litecoins were paid out from the pool to good causes, leaving about 782 litecoins income, which is about $1.93 or £1.25 UK pounds during that whole period .  Server costs were £168 for that November to April period.  I had been hoping litecoins may increase in value to eventually make it financially viable but unfortunately there's not much sign of that at the moment.

Running the mining op is pretty staightforward, but it's setting it up in the first place and ensuring everything works together that's the tricky bit.  With litecoin.miningpool.com this meant getting pushpool to interact with bitcoind as the "backend" and then getting a "front end" to work (user member area, stats and full working database to share out the coins properly).  I started out with simplecoin for the "front end" but ended up rewriting most of it from scratch....twice...which was more work than I had expected.  Things seemed to be going fine in this second version of the pool until those glitches which started 22nd May.  Unfortunately I don't really have the time to go through all of the code in the hope that I can fix the error (and don't want to risk the potential cost of things glitching yet again).  It's sad as I'd hoped to do good with the pool and the "good causes" donations, but I guess I need to be practical too.

How many kH/s would a litecoin pool have to sustain over a month to be able to cover the hosting costs?

Doing some (very rough) math, it seems to me that:

a decent fully dedicated (non vps) server would run ~$100/mo.

if you're running a 1% commission, you would thus have to mine $10,000/mo worth of LTC.

at the current exchange rate, $10,000 USD/m ~= 4,000,000 LTC/m.  (or ~133,333 LTC/d)

in my (2 days ;-) of mining experience, ~ 3000kH/s roughly translates to 2600 LTC/d.  if you use that ratio, you would then have to mine at an average of 154,000kH/s to mine 133,333 LTC/d.

Thus, at the current exchange rate, with $100/mo expenses, and a 1% commission, your mining pool would need to be averaging 154,000kH/s to break even.

Extrapolating that out, even at a 5% commission, you'd still have to mine at 31,000kH/s as a pool to make $100/mo... are there any litecoin pools pulling that off?

Could someone check my math?

Seems like most of the pools are banking on a better exchange rate I guess?

If you look back at bitcoin in the early days there was little money being made in terms of exchange. heck one guy bought a pizza for like some ungodly amount of BTC which at the time was about $30-$40.

No one really knows the future of any of these cryptocurrencies. Time will tell given there is no historical record to look to other than back to 2009 when bitcoin started.

Okies folks, the site is back up for final withdrawals.  I haven't messed around trying to fix the glitched allocations - consider any extra that you may have been allocated as a parting gift to thank you for mining at the pool (that includes you, burnside).   :)

To withdraw your Litecoins, please ensure that you have a valid Payment Address on your Account Details page, and that your Automatic Payout amount is set to 0.001 . Automatic payouts of any final balances are sent every 40 minutes.

Please ensure that you have withdrawn your Litecoins by 21st June 2012, at which time all functionality will cease

Interesting math, though a Litecoin pool will run happily on a decent vps - you can get them for a few Bitcoins per month :)
Different pools, different setups, etc, for us it was pretty easy to split a vm off our US BTC server to run the LTC pool, extra cost involved- some time ;)

hi froggy, shame to see the pool close- it worked great for me.

I recently started to solo mine instead so I stopped using your pool as much- can you tell me if the payout error paid me anything above what I was owed? If I was overpaid how much was it by?

Hi BlackBison, the payout error didn't affect any blocks in which you mined.

Don't worry, anyone, about whether you've received extra...just think of it as a parting bonus "thank you" for mining at the pool.

I may release the source code.  If I do, it'll be in a few weeks time.  It's a bit messy with lots of commented-out stuff but maybe it would allow folks to check or experiment to see where things went wrong (I've got ideas and thoughts of how to fix it).

I am unable to remove my coins. I keep getting a fatal error when I try. Can you help me close out my account and bet my Ltc?

Sorry for the delay in replying, Mr Bitcoin (been away from the forum doing other non-Litcoin related stuff).  I've just sent your balance to you a few mioments ago.

Best wishes and thanks for having mined at the pool.

Hashrate is currently based on your shares found in the last 3511 hours 43 minutes 6 seconds , therefore if you've just started mining, the hashrate figure will take 3511 hours 43 minutes 6 seconds to give a good estimate of your hashing.
