Title: Use cryptocurrency wallet now in Browser w/out any Extensions!
Post by: GreatArkansas on August 24, 2019, 01:11:47 AM
Recently, one of the open-sourced crypto browser released a Nightly Channel v0.71.17 (https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v0.71.17), where you can now use personal ethereum wallet using Brave Browser w/out using any browser's extensions.

What is Brave Browser?
-Brave Browser is open-sourced browser which is based on Chromium browser. This browser also has some rewards feature on their browser which you can pay some content creator or website with BAT token.

How to use the wallet inside Brave Browser?
  • You need a nightly version of Brave Browser first, where you can find and download here (https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases) (v0.71.17 and higher only).
  • Once you already downloaded and installed. Go to top right three horizontal line -> Crypto Wallets
  • Select now your wallet now, either you restore your ethereum wallet or create a new one. You can use also your hardware wallets, like Ledger and Trezor.

.
  • That's it, make sure you back-up your Secret Backup Phrase once you create a new on the Brave Browser. When you just need to open your wallet, just enter your created password and send/receive anytime while using your browser only.

Seems familiar? This is the metamask browser extension, right? The Brave Browser included Metamask on their browser already, that's why you don't need to install any extension for their browser.
Although this is still for ethereum wallet and still on the nightly version, I am hoping that it will also support a lot of cryptocurrencies soon, especially Bitcoin and will release it on the official Brave browser.

I saw this news, but I have not tried Nightly version of Brave browser yet.
Looks like it is just a standard Metamask.
Please tell me is it now possible to send and receive BAT inside this wallet or not.

you can't say it is without any extensions when the extension is already pre-installed in this "special" browser you download. besides it doesn't seem like the best idea to trust your browser with your private keys (as a wallet) when it is relying on JavaScript and could face a lot of problems and backdoors.

by the way, weren't they asking for KYC when you used cryptocurrencies in their network?

There is a big difference between asking for KYC to receive tokens as payments and having an "local" wallet embed to the browser.

It comes with the browser, you don't need to google "wallet extension", find an extension and install it. That's what's special about this. Maybe you can think that way, but the same can be said for many other things (e.g Samsung's pre-installed wallet).

Yes, you can send and receive BAT if you are using this Crypto Wallet feature of Brave, you just need to know that their 'Brave Reward' is different on this Crypto Wallet.

No more KYC for this, since those KYC things about Brave browser is on their 'Brave Rewards'. For those who are able to use that feature, especially when you want to withdraw your BAT in their platform. This another feature of Brave browser which is Crypto Wallet is different for their Brave Rewards.

We can say that it is convenient, especially on browsers, since I think there are a lot of people has a lot of extension on their browsers, especially those using metamask which is if you use some browsers, such as Google Chrome, you need to manually install some extensions (which may be also dangerous if you installed a wrong one).

Basically, it is more secure to stay away from web wallets, that give temporary convenience but in the long run, you will accept and get lots of risks yourself by using those sort of wallets.
Using wallet apps from renowned providers is better, but it is better if sticking with wallets for computers, not mobile devices.

It is just matter of time, because Brave browser already ask for KYCs, to claim brave rewards. That step is kind of broken promise on their slogan. That is a shameless step of Brave browser.

I used that browser but did not update.
The update appears to have integrated Metamask's wallet into that browser so that the interface looks identical.
Did they add a layer to protect against Phishing as MetaMask does?
Personally, I am against putting all things together in one place. This includes extensions, wallets, and browsers.

It is better to store major part of money in wallets, in devices that rarely used to connect to internet; and when connect, only use to update wallets, and do transactions.
Extensions, addons always potentially contain threats that we don't fully aware of.
Using wallets that support by browsers is not safe. People might be safe today, but who knows what will happen tomorrow with those browsers and online wallets?

Even though I definitely don't like it because screw KYCs, you really can't blame them. I'm pretty sure requiring KYC is a requirement for them to be able to legally operate in the United States because they're doing it through a 3rd party, Uphold. Hopefully it's only temporary though. Hopefully they find a way to do it on-chain instead(though I doubt it). But then again, whatever. We're not forced to receive the rewards anyway. We can still freely use Brave for it's privacy features without submitting anything.

Isn't this a bad idea as a wallet for storage? I would understand if this wallet is being used for transactions but I won't recommend it to anyone for storing purposes. It's already a bad idea on storing your coins online and putting it on a browser where anyone has access to it if its not your personal computer is already bad. I would still recommend offline desktop wallets and hardware wallets for storing purposes and use browser based and app based mobile wallets for transactions only.

@Harlot it was never intended to be used as your main wallet. Some people might need this extension because they have to interact with apps or for ease of use. Imagine if you have to bring your HW everywhere that will defeat the purpose of using an HW because you expose your essential wallet in public. With this extension, you don't have to disclose your private key, and nobody knows unless they sit beside you or hijack your connection.

Yeah that is what I'm trying to say that browser-based wallets aren't really a storage solution for their crypto. From what I know most users here have a different wallet for storing cryptos and for transactions, this is really a good option if you want to have a handy wallet within your browser just to send/receive cryptocurrencies. But for me I'm still more comfortable using a mobile-based wallet for my daily crypto transactions it is much easier to scan the address than to copy and paste it in my opinion plus I won't be switching to different tabs while doing it.
