Title: Quagmire
Post by: Phinnaeus Gage on November 14, 2011, 03:30:43 AM
Looks like I'm in a quagmire. If I respond with the following post in the linked thread, I risk posting off-topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=51757.0

Therefore I had to start a new thread to discuss off-topic posting. Please understand that I'm not trying to be an asshole who will simply opt to start a new thread every time I get a brain fart. That said, accept this thread as one of those exceptions.

Now my question.

How is it that every post within the following thread is not an off-topic post?: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=51527.0

Clearly, the OP has directed a question toward a single member, therefore no other posts should be allow.

Contact me if you wish to claim this personal favor. Thanks.

Let me make myself perfectly clear in regards to the thread in question. I don't have a horse that race. I don't have a vendetta towards any of the posters. But take a look at some, if not all, the posts in that thread and tell me how every single one of them relates to the OP.

One more thing. I DO NOT have the red ass toward theymos. And I sure the hell hope he doesn't have one towards me. His contributions here is hard work and, I for one, appreciate his efforts.

You are fairly correct. Some of the posts directly relate to the OP, so they're ok. However, many posts don't. That being said, I want to stay far away from this train wreck that I'm surprised that we even allow.

That topic post is mostly just a statement of fact, so the topic is very broad. Probably anything related to Atlas, Matthew, the domain, or the case in general would be considered on-topic. Undoubtedly there are some posts that are off-topic, but no one has reported any and I'm not going to read 6 pages of that garbage.

If the OP intends for only one member to be allowed to respond, then he has to make it more clear. That's not how I interpreted it.

Thank you, Maged and theymos, for the clarification. Also, I enjoyed reading both well written posts. If, or when, I F-up again, would you be so kind as to PM me? I have proven in the past that I learn from my errors and will present no arguments to any mods or admins. Thank you kindly.

Sincerely, Bruno

Sorry to violate your thread lock, but I figured you wanted us to respond.

Theymos will probably ban you again next time he sees an off-topic post (as an administrator, he doesn't really have time for pleasantries), but I'll try to remember to PM you. Hopefully other mods will see this post and agree, but no guarantees.

Also, something that helped someone who had this issue in the past was me working with them more than regular members. Part of that involved me editing some of their posts to make them more on-topic. Will you authorize me to edit your posts to increase their compliance with forum policy when I see them? I have to explicitly ask, since although we can edit posts anyway, we're only really supposed to do it to remove content, not change it.
