It was great to see that I earned my first merit today. Thanks GOD for that. I feel so good now. Hopefully, I'll gain more merit in the future. Everyone will pray for me.

Merits are a requirement for you to rank up from one rank to another. And after every 2 merits you receive, you get 1 sMerit, which can be used to merit someone else. That's the closest you can get to "using merit".

Merits are not used, but they reflect the rank of a user; 9 more would get you to member rank (with the required activity, 99 more would make you a full member.
Merits also generate sendable merits (smerits) which are given to other members, each merit generates half the amount in smerits, you have 0.5 smerits now, but it doesn't reflect on your profile, if you earn one more, you would have 1 smerit.

Anyway, you don't use merit. You accumulate and merit others. Just follow what TryNinja said.

It’s a fair question, that may likely have been asked before, and may still bear for many people. There are currently 12.089 forum profiles that have been awarded a single Merit (generating therefore 0,5 sMerits). Now some of them may have received some additional sMerits in the initial airdrop, but even so, the figure is likely pretty large of those with a virtual 0,5 sMerits to send in their account after receiving their first merit, wondering how to be able to send it.

Since the above posts have explained that fractional sMerits are not sendable, have a go at the 1 sMerit experience (2 Merits -> 1 sMerit) …

Note: God plays little part in the Merit System (unless you are referring to @theymos who, in a sense, plays that role in the game). A more terraneal approach would be to thank @BL46K 7193R, and whoever was in a good mood today to give you a second merit. Now find a good post to merit ...

You currently received one merit,you need one more merit to have a sMerit.Then you will see something like this.

When you click merit button new window will open like this.

Then enter the number and click send button to merit any post you wanted to merit.

Merit is the forum's new policy to limit spam accounts. Merit is also used to increase your ranking on the forum.
If you get 2 Merit you will get 1 smerit, you can use this 1 smerit to compliment the forum's helpful posts. By Merit policy the forum is trying to limit spam accounts and promote accounts that contribute to the community.

You don't, it just allow to progress to higher ranks when time is right.
You should focus on quality of your posts always and helping people.
Then merit will come by itself :)

If you get 2 merit, you will have 1 smerit. You can only use 1 smerit sent to one of the other people on this forum you feel good. With 1 merit, you do not have smerit to use.

If you like any post informative, you can give Merit to it as you have 1 smerit with you. When you give merit to others, they will also be happy as you are happy on getting the merits.

Merits are used to tip good post. If you see a post that you find interesting, tap on the merit at the top right corner of the post and input the number of merit you want to give.

You don't have to use merit because it cannot be use to whatever you want but it is needed to rank up from jr. member up to legendary. Each rank requires different merit count from jr. member up to legendary rank. What you can do with your merit is to send or reward. Each time you got 1 merit you also get 0.5 smerit but the smerit can only be sent when it is 1 smerit either by sending it to one forum user, by merit contest/giveaway.

By now, you already knew how to use your sMerits as consequence of help for the others. I have only one more thing to tell you.

After you finish your merit give away with your sMerits, you have to close the your merit page. Refresh it sometimes creates 'nearly' double spend of your sMerits. For starter like you, I believe each sMerit is precious so I don't think you want to lose one or two sMerits by refreshing your merit page.

It is a bug and already fixed with a notification if one send same amount of merit to one post in a fixed period (from 1 to 2 minutes, I don't remember).

Don't refresh your merit page after sending merits, close it instead!

My congratulations. You quickly earned your first Merit, and then the second. Now you have at least 1 measure ready to send to the post that you liked.
I advise you not to wait too long and not to be greedy. By supporting other forum participants you guarantee that they will support you too.

He has only 1 smerit and everyone is suggesting him to spend that smerit. Well, there is nothing wrong in it but the main focus of the OP to get more merits and that can only be done by constructive posts and avoiding the mega spam topics. Merit won't be easy to come by but they will come as long as the OP does not lose hope and continue the quality work.

Same thing as, merits can turn spammers/shitposters into a good quality posters.

Anyway @OP, just try to be natural in every post you make, and don't beg or fish for merits. You'll know how important the knowledge you can get in this community than the merit you get in the long run.

Many good wishes to you that you have acquired the first talent. When I first got the talent, I felt great. You got the first merit in your qualification. If you post good and helpful you will get much more merit. If you find someone else's post as helpful as you find merit, you can use your merit. You can give one merit just because you got two merits.

At time when you made this post you had 1 merit and you can't use it, because 1 merit give you 0.5 sMerit. But now you got one more merit point and now you have 1 sMerit. You can simply give it to post that you like, it's useful and etc. I know it can be difficult just one post, but I hope that you will get more merits eventually and it will give you more sMerits to spend

Congrats, use it wisly buddy. All have already mentioned how to send etc., I would se spend it for something reallly worth. Now that you have 2 merits you will be able to send 1 merit.

Great new for a newbie it is hard to earn merits since you need a user to send you before you get merit you could make comments or post to earn merits.
Also, Merit cannot be use you could see it in your profile and if you have enough merits you could rank up in the forum.

I think you are still confused here. The Merits that you receive cannot be sent. You send the sMerits that you have. Your Merit counter never decreases (unless you’ve been exceptionally naughty …).

It’s something like this:

- Say I start with 0 Merits (Merits 0; sMerits 0)
- I receive 1 Merit (Merits 1; sMerits 0 + there is half a virtual sMerit there, but you cannot see nor use it yet)
- I receive another Merit (Merits 2; sMerits 1)
- I receive another Merit (Merits 3; sMerits 1 + 0,5 virtual one)
- I now send 1 sMerit ((Merits 3; sMerits 0 + 0,5 virtual one), I cannot send any more yet.
- I receive another Merit (Merits 4; sMerits 1)
- and so on.

Merits: Never decreases, cannot be sent.
sMerits: decreases. For every 2 Merits received, you also get 1 sMerits to send. You can only send whole sMerit numbers (not 0,5 sMerits).

I send sMerits, the recipient receives Merits (and additionally gets sMerits to send on a ratio on 1 sMerit for every 2 Merits received).

Merit is not what you think it is, it is not a treasure to be kept, look how it works, merits are given to you when another user thinks your post is good and informative and they agree with it or may not(effort can earn you merits too).

So whenever you start posting well, and earn merits, you don't need to keep it carefully  ;D, it doesn't decrease, what you can lose is your Smerits whenever you decide to give it out to some other user and that(smerit)also shouldn't be hoarded.

I know the feels on receiving your first ever merit which something boost you up even further to make some constructive and helpful post yet someone recognize your post.

Merit cant be used yet this is only a primary requirement for your account to rank up and already been mentioned that a number of merits you earned you'll gain some smerits which
can be used on meriting others.

OP is gaining merit very quickly and got 9 merits by now. It seems OP still does not know how and where to use his smerits ?  :)

I hope he will start spending his smerits as indicated by many people here and does not hoard his smerits.

The best method to learn how to use sMerits from received merits is practice. Send your sMerits one or two times will help users understand how their sMerits can be used.
It is my personal habits but I always to keep some sMerits in my pocket, around 5 to 10, just in cases someone help me or I see some interesting topics or posts, I can give my small amount of sMerits as an indirect thanks to their good posts.

You can bookmark good posts/ topics you see, and come back later when you have sMerits to give them some. But most of time you will forget to do this. Having some sMerits reserved for future good posts is the best one.

With a single merit you will move from newbies to junior member why with 10 merit you will move from junior member to member, while with 100 merit you will move to full member rank. That how the merit works it help you increase your rank and reputation on bitcointalk though many person now buy it even when they don't merit have any. You willcome acrosspost on bitcointalkforum with more than 30 merit just simple question as, I don't it this was the primary aim of adding merit to this forum. Please let top abusing merit...

It's the only thing matters when giving merits but most of the time you can use it when you appreciate someone's post. I hope that you use it in a good way 'cause you might get tagged if you abuse the merit system.

No pressure, it's just a reminder, be mindful on what post you're trying to merit.

At some point the op did reconsider what you have suggested to send it to someone that is helpful by doing a merit contest. In such short time the op did well and while many people have help op earning merits then op also wants to help newbies earn their merits. I'm sure you'd seen the thread op created.

I just checked the OP merit history and was surprised to see he haven't spend any merit yet. I do not understand the purpose of him asking this question when he seems to have no planing spending his smerits.

Maybe he's hodling them, just like Bitcoin. :D

I'm surprised that you got 2 merits for asking this kind of question, is it pity or what anyway I don't want to question those guys who gave you merits it's up to us, maybe I just have my own guidelines on who should I give, and asking questions is not one of them, just providing answer and a good information about many subjects.

Asking questions, although not top of the list, is definitively one of the criteria on my agenda that can be merited. For example, the question in the OP:

- Is a decent question.
- Can serve multiple people in doubt when they obtain their first merit (generating 0,5 sMerits).
- Shows an attitude towards wanting to participate in a System from the start, specifically on the awarding side of the system.
- The question comes from a Newbie (presumably) who, on balance, is trying to learn and participate in a positive way.
- Newbie profiles may be looked at with a more laxed criteria than others.
- Having awarded 3.852 sMerits as of last Friday, in 3.451 TXs, to 800 different profiles, criteria needs to be diverse.

He can get merit for any text he writes. That's none of our business because there are people who could like his questions and can give him merit.
I am happy for the OP that he got the merits but i also want him to spend his smerits so others can benefit too.

I think this forum is created for discussion. Anyone who does not know will ask any question. I didn't know how to use merit. So I asked this question. I think maybe more people have come to know the answer through the question. I asked the question only to know and I got my answer. That is why I am grateful to everyone. And in less than 8 days after your first merit, you also earned an additional 9 merits, well you can't really use merits for anything, it's just a system that proves that you are eligible to rank up in the forum and I congratulate you for gaining 10 merits because this means that you are now a member rank, while you cannot use merits, you can use sMerits which is spendable merits that you could send to others when you feel that they have made quality posts or posts that you like or is helpful to you, this keeps the cycle going.

He is newbie now and not a member although he has taken merits which are needed for the member rank but the activity is still pending.
He will become Jr. Member today but it will take some time before he reaches the member rank.

I agree with you, as well as the way you have earned merit if you think someone else's post is good and positively helpful you can qualify. Like you he can attain rank by attaining merit.

Thanks so much for the question buddy, I earned my first merit few weeks back and I was also confused on how to use it, I wanted asking this same question but i have to be sure someone else haven't asked the question so it won't be asif I'm spamming. I now know merit aren't used but they are earned and also serve as a rank. Thanks again for the question I have learned from it.
