Title: UNICEF Will Give Out Bitcoin Grants via Henrietta Fore's Cryptocurrency Fund
Post by: hugeblack on December 29, 2019, 08:03:23 AM
UNICEF's thinking about cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether appears to be expanding a little bit. Instead of selling bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies they receive as contributions, Henrietta Fore and UNICEF announced that the organization will now receive donations in cryptocurrencies.
The vision is to redistribute it to help open up open-source technology projects.

“This is a new and exciting venture for UNICEF,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. “If digital economies and currencies have the potential to shape the lives of coming generations, it is important that we explore the opportunities they offer. That’s why the creation of our Cryptocurrency Fund is a significant and welcome step forward in humanitarian and development work."

Wow!this is hug guys, UNICEF is one of the largest and well known organizations in this world so this is a great achievement towards mass adoption of cryptocurrencies. What i really wish to seeing them doing is to also give aid and financial support by sending funds in bitcoins. That will surely spread news about bitcoin as a payment method in  under developed and developing countries

I think I've seen this news here in the forum before. So basically they are just holding their crypto and wait for it to rise in value rather than cash them out immediately (which I heard what most charities do). From there it's kinda vague.

It just says the held cryptos would be used for grants to "open source tech projects" which is weird for the UN's "Children's Fund". You think they're hoping some of those projects would make money and who can later donated back to UNICEF?

Yeah. Their initial press release about it was back in October. You can read it here: https://www.unicef.org/press-releases/unicef-launches-cryptocurrency-fund

UNICEF have 36 national committees, several of which have accepted bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as donations for a number of years, but usually via a payment processor and would sell the currency immediately for fiat. This new Cryptocurrency Fund is using crypto rather than just selling it, providing funding to start-ups and other companies directly in cryptocurrency.

You can read about the first three companies they are providing crypto funding to here: https://www.unicef.org/innovation/stories/Fundblockchain6months. They are Atix Labs, Prescrypto, and Utopixar.

A lot of people would donate to charity. And the feeling of giving money without anyone knowing its you is just amazing. As long as I have a crypto to share, I would love to donate it there.

The national committees of New Zealand and France are both currently accepting bitcoin donations:
https://www.unicef.org.nz/donate-in-crypto
https://lp.unicef.fr/donate-in-cryptocurrencies/

You can also donate directly to UNICEF's Innovation Fund by following the link on the UNICEF NZ page linked above, or here: https://commerce.coinbase.com/charges/36MWGBA2

UNICEF USA certainly used to accept bitcoin donations, but I can't seem to find the link on their website anymore. Not sure why they removed it.

UNICEF has planned this before and a few articles regarding it has been done in the past. Here's a link of the discussion about it here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5033344.0) and here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5191567.0). Gotta admit though, with them taking a step, I'd say other companies would probably be enticed to follow. UNICEF is an agency founded by the UN with great goals and a great reputation amongst the charities out there, so I'd say pretty great by them.

UNICEF has been one of the most progressive UN programme. Though the stance of UNICEF is not necessarily the decision of UN, UNICEF is one of the most influential organization and most widely recognized ones. They get their sponsorship from many corporates directly and are the first to get into a reverse sponsorship with a football club. This would not only ease people around the world to donate easily to UNICEF, UNICEF itself would be a hodler stimulating the adoption and price growth.

if i still remember it i think i have seen a site that said they donate to unicef a good amount of cash  .

the site was also a crypto based site so i think that they pay in the form of cryptos  . i also check the link and it did accept cryptos but there was a minimum amount for donations so i havent tried it  cause i have a lower amount of crypto that time   .   not just unicef but other popular organizations were now already doing this kind of idea. its cool because crypto uses can give out easily  .

This could potentially change how the public percieve cryptocurrencies in general. With UNICEF being quite a large institution, it might make other institutions think of adopting the currency, which would further increase adoption, and also encourage beneficiaries of the fund to talk about and consider using cryptocurrencies too. It also proves how cryptocurrency is not a get-rich-quick scheme as some people still think, but rather a tool that could be useful in financial sector.

Well it would be interesting to see what they'd do with it. I just hope most of those projects they support with the crypto they've been receiving would succeed.

I wonder if those projects would be related to children's needs, being this UNICEF.

Well, it could be really good for them to actually utilize the money they get instead of destroying its value that brings in.
Crypto is donated, so why change it to something else when the whole donation is based on crypto? If crypto is donated then crypto shall be used, that is how I see it. With this new fund they will be capable of using their crypto the way it was intended to be used, intact and not sold to fiat like it is some sort of investment to them, which is not, it is a donation not an investment.

Also, helping out the less fortunate with crypto could bring in more news about both crypto and UNICEF as well, this way they can get their name heard more in the crypto world as a charity that takes crypto and gives crypto which could increase crypto donations to them, and crypto will be heard by people who never heard it before as well.

If you want to help children do not send anything to UNICEF, they have proven their inability to help children numerous times, millions of children die each year of starvation and curable diseases, and billions of $ is going where? People give money to that organization, but where the results are, I don't see them personally, but I can read a lot of complaints about the waste of money involving senior officials of that organization.

If you want to help children help them locally, everyone knows at least some place where abandoned children live, or someone who lives in poor conditions. We have a charity program here on the forum Bitcointalk Charity Program (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5124375.100) and I'm very happy to send my donation there because I know it will really help the children.

Much better and transparent organization is http://www.marysmeals.org/ (Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary%27s_Meals)) which feeds millions of children around the world every day.

Stop wasting your money on UNICEF, they are helping children the same as the UN is helping to keep world peace.

It's a pretty old news. I don't know why thegivingblock decided to post it now but it was first posted in the month of October this year. Read below,

https://www.news18.com/news/tech/unicef-launches-cryptocurrency-fund-will-accept-donations-through-bitcoin-and-ether-2340347.html

However, nothing has been materialized yet and they still don't have any option available for crypto donations. But yes, it will be great for bitcoin's reputation to be associated with a great name like Unicef. We certainly need such support because crypto market is currently facing a lot of reputational challenges due to so many scams involving cryptos.

It sounds very much as though they are speculating. It's hard for them to give out cryptocurrency unless the people they give it out to can either spend the crypto, or convert it into fiat in a local exchange so they can then spend the fiat.

Read my posts above. I've provided links to the relevant pages where you can donate bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies if you wish.

It's hard for them to give out cryptocurrency unless the people they give it out to can either spend the crypto, or convert it into fiat in a local exchange so they can then spend the fiat.
Again, please read my posts above. They have indeed already given out the first cryptocurrency grants to three companies which are involved in blockchain development. Atix Labs, which is developing a blockchain platform to match start ups to investors, Prescrypto, which is developing a blockchain platform for medical prescriptions, and Utopixar, which is developing a blockchain platform for rewarding community engagement. Each company has received just short of $100,000 in unspecified cryptocurrency.

I personally think it's pretty cool they are using cryptocurrency donations to fund cryptocurrency based projects aimed at building infrastructure in developing nations.

Unicef? The ONG to which you donate money supposed to help children, but in the end, we discover that instead to protect children they sexually abuse them, like Oxfam and many others btw. The staff is in collusion with banks, millions of dollars disappear, don't do proper accounting to suck more money and so on, yet they want to give lessons to whoever is watching their commercial campaigns on TV.

But hey, perhaps they could also start to reduce their outrageous expenses, salaries, running cost, if they really want to help the kids.
Here is what they're paid for, an outrageous salary is given. Just for your information, there is a man paid about $400k annually in the sheet,  this money is enough to give 1 meal to 400,000 children, yep you heard it right.

UNICEF helping out the tech industry for a cause? I guessed that this is their only aim since this non-profit organization is really about helping oppressed children around the world and I would expect that UNICEF is just doing this so that if these tech companies become successful they will receive some financial help in return. The only problem I see here is that the donations they receive from crypto will not help the kids instantly but instead be a long-term plan where they seek companies like this payback in the future.

This is a step toward legitimizing Bitcoin in the eyes of the world. We already know it is legitimate, but many people see it as a scam or Ponzi scheme or even just a passing trend or fad. We need goo news like this for people to gradually realize Bitcoin’s potential.

Indeed it is. A few discussions about the actions of UNICEF has already been opened on this forum since late September or so, which was about UNICEF France branch accepting crypto.

Helping tech industry? More like integrating with them. I don't know how you got that message from the topic but UNICEF only stated that they would now (was already up by around Sept-Oct) accept donations through Cryptocurrency. As for companies donating, well, we can take that as a donation in of itself, and I doubt any strings could be located there. The long-term plan you say should be primarily invested in the open-source technology projects they would invest in though, as to what the article has said so anyway.

This is a step in the right direction and its something that needs to be joyous about. I have known about UNICEF for a while and the understanding that I have got was that they only focus on donations from countries and not individuals but with this new line of thought coming from them, it shows they are open to a wide range of opportunities from the teeming youth population and are mindful of where the future of currency is going to. I hope this would be a project that would further announce the continual embedded advantage of crypto to the general populace.

Glad to see someone else is thinking with their head and figuring out what this is really about, they just want more money, obviously, they realized they could get something from the crypto community as well. As I say in my post, if they spend donated money for the welfare of the children as they should, the world would be a much better place.

Brainwashing media machine is obviously still works well because people still donate thinking that their money is going in the right hands. I would rather destroy my private keys than send any coins to UNICEF. $400 000 just for one man per year = 400 000 meals? >:(

I have been part of donating to UNICEF for a while now, and I guess three months now as I have been approached and told that they have an excellent program for feeding and helping the kids that need them. I haven't seen any detailed helping, but they sent me some photobook with information about what they have done in my country. I believe that they would help the needy; it would only be in their conscience if they don't.

I asked them for some information about them accepting cryptocurrencies as a donation, and I think it's going to be beneficial for the community of Bitcoin. More applications would lead to more exposure to people, which is not bad, right?

I just re-read the article for you hoping that I misread some parts of it but you are wrong. UNICEF is not talking about crypto donations being accepted to their organization because they have done this a long time ago. They are talking about cryptocurrency grants which they will use the crypto donations they have receive in order to help these crypto-startups which I really would expect they are doing this because they want something in return in the future may it be some form of financial assistance or some kind of integration you are talking about.

There is nothing positive about the fact that someone will be able to donate BTC to UNICEF, they will take crypto and how this will help you and me? Maybe that person who have $400 000 annual salary will get some extra money in his pocket...

I know you are involved in Bitcointalk Charity program, and you know where that money is going exactly - why are you giving money to someone who claims to be doing something good with it? You ask for details, and you get photobook, read a post from LeGaulois and you will see where is your donations.

That's legit disgusting.

I would never be able to live with myself having a salary of +$400,000 knowing that I am being paid by people who donate to help people in need. I'm pretty sure that they do help quite a bunch of people world wide, but they could do far more if they stopped acting like a business that's profit oriented and needs to splash big money to attract the best people. It's a charity ffs. :-X

I'm absolutely not againt people being paid money because they invest their time and dedication to their goal, but this can't be justified in any shape or form.

perhaps this is the most important aspect of this sector. With Bitcoin, money can be raised to charities without any intermediaries. Secret donors can also use this system. A great chance of advertising for Bitcoin. I think bitcoin addresses should be on every sign of these institutions.

With this ways I think it brings more potential to reach the highest popularity in perfect time. Once it fully be implemented at UNICEF, the possibility of rising demand is always capable to occur someday. However, it won't be successful without the support of different countries who is willing to accept and adopt digital currency as their basic spending currency. Although there's no definite news stating that people actually are using bitcoin, hopefully the awareness will spread globally.
