Title: Is 2020 the Year of eSports?
Post by: JessicaVL on March 03, 2020, 12:52:33 PM
We all know eSports is a big deal and it is becoming a bigger deal every year. 2019 saw huge growth in the esports industry, as it grew 3% – surpassing $120.1 billion. Over and above that, mobile eSports has become one of the fastest growing sectors in gaming, and it’s not slowing down.

Here is why eSports is set to get even bigger in 2020: https://4king.com/2020-is-the-year-of-esports/

Do you think 2020 is going to be the year of eSports?

I used to monitor esports closely during the last years.
League of Legends was the pusher of the industry all this time. I see that this video game has lost a lot popularity in 2019 and I wonder how the esports industry keeps growing as no other game has gained those percentages in its community.

Take the example of Valve sponsored events for Dota 2, the most known tournament which is The International. It's like the fiesta of Dota 2 yearly and the prize pool keeps increasing yearly.

I wouldn't say that this year is the year of esports but I'd say that this is the era of esports where our parents are already open with this industry and doesn't see gaming as an addiction or just a pastime.

I really don't think that most parents are going to be glad with such decisions made by their kids, even in the next decade. I think that esport will get more and more similiar to regular sport, like with massive scholarships, huge contracts for those kids, career paths etc. I know that all of such stuff is already in esport, but we talk about the scale of those actions.

I think eSports has a long way to go. I would be surprised if anyone I know has ever seen an eSports event.

It's very likely to happen. But I don't think 2020 will remain in people's minds as the year of cybersports :-\

Does it have anything to do with the financial situation of the people in your circle? Or more and more trivial and simply among your circle of people aged 30+?

Why they won't be glad?

It's a career path for real and at the same time, you get to enjoy what you're doing. I don't think that parents on this era are still the same as the old era kind of parents.

As long as you get to enjoy what you do and you're earning at the same time, they will be glad and proud of it.

Perhaps due to the fact that the esports career is not as durable as something more classic. With the help of which, let’s say, a person will earn a living, say, after 30? It is unlikely that he will play on an equal footing with young players, which means that among the players he will not have a place.

I've seen players that has been in the actual situation that you have mentioned.

So when they get old, there are still opportunities that might be accepted. They can be a coach or simply work as an analyst or whatever he can contribute to the team or organization that he belongs to.

I just wanted to be clear here - esports was rising for the last decade climbing from prize pool of $500 to current numbers (which are insane honestly).
esport is a big industry and it will grow for sure. You shouldn't think that it will go somewhere away in the nearest time since most of current 20-30 year old men grew up playing computer games, so most of them are watching pro games.

I have friends in a wide variety of financial situations. I’d say it has more to do with their age. I don’t think people over 25 think of video games as a sport or a job. Their kids love watching games though and think of streamers as celebrities. In another 15 years I’m sure it’ll be as mainstream as regular sports. This year though, I’m pretty confident in saying that not one adult I know will be watching an esports event.
