Title: Have you ever lost access to your Bitcoins?
Post by: CryptoHuff on March 05, 2020, 08:45:12 AM
What is your story of not being able to access your Bitcoin wallet with Bitcoins in them.

What have you tried to retrieve them?

I have once lost some BTC due to an online wallet hack (inputs.io). There was no way to recover them but it was a great lesson. Not your keys, not your coins.

Not actually Bitcoin but I lose some crypto because I misplace the private key.
It was my first time using DEX and I was just newbie at that time.
But it is just a small amount and thanks to that experience I learn to always keep my private key secure and always have some back up copy of it.

I have 3 experience of me losing access to my own wallets, the first one is when I accidentally formatted my hard drive which contains my seeds and private keys and my total holding in those wallets is approximately about 200-300$ in erc20 tokes, eth, and bitcoin. The second one is by getting hacked and lastly is later losing my nano ledger. I tried contacting supports for my wallets which I got my seeds deleted but got no reply, I just lost hope about it and just forget and move on from it.

I first experienced it when I first started following crypto and I couldn't return it and activate it again because the pass to fix I forgot. but because the value isn't great, I made another wallet with a pretty good backup right now.
maybe there are also many who have problems losing a bitcoin wallet, and that's normal.

When I am still newbie, I created a bitcoin wallet at that time so I can store my bitcoins that I am going to use for online gambling. And what happened was I forgot my private key as I thought that it is not important because I was thinking at that time that I only need my email address and password to login. I try to recover my wallet via my email but I was unlucky.

It was my big mistake as I have stored 1 bitcoin to that wallet but the bitcoin price at that time was around 220$, after the incident I transfer to our local exchange and I always make sure to save the private key in every wallet that I created so I can avoid my past mistake.

That 1 Bitcoin today is quite a sum of money. So, you are in the crypto space since around 2012

It was about 2013.
I had a couple of hundreds worth of BTC & LTC. I used my GPU for mining (believe it was r9 280X?), and one day I came back from work and found all up in smoke.
PC was gone, hard disk deceased.
I had a PK printed out on paper, and I thought I was safe there. I was sorry for the PC, but glad that my apartment didn't catch on fire.
At a later date, with a new PC, I started to install all my shit, got to a wallet.
I went to the drawer where I held all my PC related crap and found out that my girl (now wife), has "cleaned" everything for me, after that terrible fire.   :D

I was too furious to get in crypto until early 2017., but a lesson learned.
NEVER EVER have PK only in one physical place... ;D

No, I haven't but from stories of other users see how complicated and frustrated that might be.
That is why it's very important to always have a back up and your access data stored in a safe and secure way.
My advice is not to store all your coins in just one wallet and don't keep coins at exchanges, their only purpose is trading, not storage of coins.
People learn best on their own mistakes but that is very often painful and expensive.

It happens to me I have lost access to my bitcoin because it was hack. I never thought before that I will experience this kind of hacking in my wallet. This is always a reminder to me and to anyone to be careful with holding their asset in a wallet.

Once yes, long ago I lost the passphrase of my wallet and luckily I did not have much Bitcoin there. It was just enough that I was afford to lose.

I messed up somehow. I thought I saved the passphrase in my desktop in a text file but few days later I was looking for the file to access the wallet and the realized I actually did not save the information and by then I had not anything left to get that back.

Never, when I entered on cryptos, it's already worths a lot of money, and I was very cautious to know first how to proper deal with wallets
I already lose some money on exchanges hacks, but never on my wallets, and this is scary, to lost access to your BTC

I see this is a problem of people who had BTC a long time ago and them lost the keys, or someone who doesn't pay so much attention to the reccomendations of wallets

I haven't but I have some bad experience with some online wallets that I don't want to use anymore.

I know that everyone is aware of that buggy wallet that we don't want to use anymore because it's only giving a headache.

I have experienced things like this losing access to enter the bitcoin wallet even though there are quite a lot of bitcoins in it but I can't help but just mengeclaskan it and it can't come back anymore because it's hard to recover.

But when I experience that, I have to be careful to save the bitcoin wallet access so that nothing happens like it used to.

I have many experience lossing my Bitcoin,

Like Lossing my bitcoin in Exchange before (Cryptopia)
In Blockchain wallet were my pharaprase seed accidentally deleted.  And also by hackere and fake wallet and to retrieve this is very hard for me.  That's why what i do now is make back up to my private keys and storing this into safe.  And also i always reveiw the website or exchange before using this.

Not just Bitcoin. I've lost my Enjin wallets seed keys and my phone broken.
So I can not reach my funds in there. I was researching what I can do about this problem and learned that there are too many people in my case. Unfortunately, there was nothing to do.

I have a small amount and it is in Electrum.
That is when I was in trial and error phase. (Different wallets)
Then I forgot to keep the seed phrase in a physical paper.
I have kept it in a notepad somewhere in my computer (D: or E:) at work but cannot find it anymore once they fixed it due to viruses.
So it was left there and I think there is no way I could get it back. Besides, I don't want to put so much efforts into telling our computer technician to recover something.

The question is how much the amount. I dont remember it and the address was also in the notepad.

Unfortunately this has happened to me several times, the first instance of this happening was when a desktop wallet I was using stopped functioning and I realized that the development of the wallet had stopped as well, this had me very worried since I could not use the wallet at all to send my coins to another address, fortunately for me I remembered that at the beginning I made a paper backup of my seed words and after looking for them for a day I found them and I could generate my addresses in an electrum wallet.

Luckily, I've never lost any BTC. I've always used reputable wallets when it comes to Bitcoin, so no problems were experienced by me over the years. However, I lost some Ethereum due to a hack/scam. The wallet provider claimed that it was a hack, and in the early days they offered reimbursements of 40%. I filed an application and received 40% back. Then more and more people started accusing the wallet owners of scamming people, and the owners disappeared. I filed some scam report applications after that but this resulted in nothing, even though the identity of the owner was established and many people supposedly filed cybercrime reports on a governmental website of the US stating the full story along with the name.

There is nothing more embarrassing and hurtful when you got robbed  :-[ I got robbed on 2018, my bag with my laptop got away to me. That shit is freaking unexpected man, I'm just going home when these 2 guys suddenly ran up to me and pointed a sharp object to me, I didn't able to see if that was a knife or something but it was sharp, I'd better gave my bag than my life. I'm totally devastated at that point but luckily my phone is in my pocket, at least. I lost almost half of my access to my wallets, tokens and some other stuff that is important to crypto. I could probably bought a car with my savings on crypto, at the very least I got no losses from what I earned in 2017's blast.

One of the things we need to do when we have a cryptocurrency account or wallet is always making sure all of the transaction happens when we are making some transferring of funds. Most of the wallets today are now have a lot of different features to make sure that the user is reliable and verified. As a user of different accounts of cryptocurrency wallet, there are some features they made like two-way authentication; some of them are connected with the keygen that gives to you depends on the timer shown on your devices. Some of them are sending encrypted code to your devices that are connected with your phone number or email address. Also, it is better if we have a problem that is related to our account always make sure we will report to them because some of the admin are approachable and always give respect to them and takes a lot of time when they are updating them.

I was using yobit for exchange of bitcoin. At first everything was going fine and I was able to withdraw the bitcoin. But after a few weeks there was a problem and I was not able to withdraw my money. It is because there was some error. But the site soon repaired it and I could access my bitcoin.

I have lost access to old bitcoin wallets, but those were empty wallets, son, i don't feel bad at all.

One of the first topics i learn about bitcoin was how the address and private keys work, and how important is to have access to your private keys because if the wallet gets fucked up at least you can load your private key to other wallet and recover your coins.

I should have sold those coin when I have access and buy a more wallet friendly coin.

It was in poloniex exchange where I invested (for long term investment) I'm not really aware that investing in a exchange for a long term investment is not really a good idea or not advisable.

Back in the days, I love trading since I trade daily and sometimes I could make 20$ in a day just in trading my tokens alone. For one to two years I invested my bitcoin there, and I get a lot of issues when it comes to the transaction and withdrawing my investment where I lose some money. And then my phone broke and I couldn't open my account in poloniex because of the 2FA authentication and there is no backup and pm the support but they are not really active(or do anything that really helps). I already forget that investment until last year when I try to open my account again and suddenly I can now open it with some verifications.

The first ever wallet I have created was a mobile wallet,
I didn't know that seed phrase is important so I just disregard saving it and proceed directly to my wallet. But then, my phone was broken and need to change for a new one. I lost the access to my wallet because it request for the seed phrase in my new wallet which I disregard saving before.

Yes I forgot my password and email of my old Bitcoin wallet I used to create multiple online wallet back then because of the referral bonus.
And I put up some BTC to one of those wallet then I forgot the email and password so I couldn't really retrieve it.
It was back when BTC was just around $200-250 it was just a small amount so I just tried to forget and ignore it.

What I have experieced is that,

The time when I decided to save enough bitcoin in my desktop wallet. Since I am confident that I am the only one who's using my PC, I only save my private key on the notepad. After the time goes by, my PC suddenly gets blue screen of death, yes, a sudden issue with my computer's hardware or what. I got worried since I don't have any back up information for my wallet, and unfortunately I cannot access my wallet anymore after I fixed my PC.

When you lost access to your bitcoin wallet try to contact with support team of your exchange account, before late you can ask him about your trouble and they will try to resolve all your terrible with bitcoin and altcoin exchange account.

I dont see recovering from an exchange wallet can be easily do. Exchange doesnt even have their own PK as they are the one holding your coins the only concern they can help you is when you get hacked but only few exchange accept this, as potential hoax is on your side. Its so easy to say that you got hacked but its also you whom transfer this and reason like this isnt accepted if you eant to claim your loss fund. That's why exchange keep reminding to keep your account safe from all cost cause they are not liable for it except if their exchange has been breached by someone and your funds included on the hacked coins.

Actually common problems in not accessing the wallet is
forget the Private keys which is very important because we can't access again our wallet. / That's why always careful in storing this keys.

And in my experience when I was a newbie i lost access to my wallet that contains 0.2 BTC before and price of this before are only 50 USD. Which is not hurt me but when price Increase this give me frustrations to open again because i can't still find private keys.  I accidentally deleted this in my social media messages drop.

I only ever get a case like this on the HYIP website. when I invested there and couldn't access the bitcoin that I had because I thought it was a scam site.
in other cases, I have never had a case like that, except for a bitcoin theft because I entered a phishing site. however, so far I have kept my private keys well and my passwords stored in a safe place. so I can always access it.

So far I personally have never lost access to any wallet that I used after a past event about losing access to an exchange, at least after that incident I have always been more thorough in terms of storing all security data. Yes, I have never lost access to my wallet since I was in this market, but I have lost access to an exchange in the past, and the only regret is that I kept at least a few altcoins on the exchange until I finally tried to be patient because I lost all crypto I have there, while basically these altcoins have the potential for the long term, even now I still see very good growth.

I am very careful with my bitcoins. I do make sure that the wallet of my bitcoin is secured, that I can always access it and easily recover it in case of some problems. But some of my coins are in myether wallet which I have not opened for a long time. I still have my private key but myether wallet took a lot of upgrade in since the time I last opened my account as well as my kucoin account. I tried to retrieve it all and luckily after few days of confirmation, I opened it and get back coins.

Ive tried it once but luckily it is just a small amounts of coins stored on an online wallet and ran away all of the funds.
Retreiving it back? Theres no way on doing that once you have lost then its lost forever. This is why its important that
we should store out coins and keep its PK away from other people. As said, not your keys then not your coins.

Ive lost once when im still newbie but it did never happen once again.

Well,  some problems can't solved especially if we using Decentralized Wallet,  those wallet that we hold our private key because if we lose our privatekeys we cannot access again our wallet.  That's why always have back up copy of this and don't tell to other your private key because they can access our wallet.

I got hacked because I installed an unknown wallet whose owner was trustworthy but turned out to be a scammer. Lost $150 in the hack in 2017. I also lost access to my coinbase wallet as for some unknown reason I couldn't login with 2FA but since the wallet was empty, I did not bother but coinbase is not trustworthy as such 3rd-party wallets act as if your money is theirs and freeze your account. 1xapo did the same after which I had to verify myself and access my account.

My electrum wallet with a few bits in it. This was back in 2015 when I happened to lost the backup file on that particular wallet. For all I know, I saved that on 3 sifferent pendrives but lo and behold, all 3 of them were reformatted and I haven't got the chance to recover the said file. It took a couple of months before I stumbled upon a wallet file on my SD card and to my surprise, it was a backup of that same wallet. Sure enough, there weren't anything big to lose but then again, it's my history in that wallet.

What is your story of not being able to access your Bitcoin wallet with Bitcoins in them.

What have you tried to retrieve them?
I haven't lost access to bitcoins like that but I remember when I was new to bitcoins I was first introduced to blockchain.info and I made a new wallet there with some temporary email because I didn't knew giving my mail email id was safe and worth it. Then after a few days when I tried to login, it said that an email has been sent to your email since you are logging in from new browser and since I used a temporary email I actually could never open my wallet again but I don't know if I had any bitcoins left over because I did some work as a freelancer and got paid in bitcoins which I believe I sold right away after keeping in blockchain wallet for little while.

I still wonder if some BTC are there but not quite sure and absolutely no way to retrieve them.

My first wallet, i generate it and i forget where i put the private key.

What have you tried to retrieve them?
Just checking where i put my private key, but can't find it, so i gave up.

I have the same experience and honestly, it's really frustrating. I have tried to think of different ways just to remember my private keys just to access my old wallet account but I didn't make it so I gave up as well. That's a lesson learn for me that I shouldn't be mindful of my private keys and that it should be kept as an important treasure. I wish I could turn back time so I could recover the earnings that I have lost.

Yes, I have lost access to my Bitcoin few times before. When I wasn't that much experienced in bitcoin trading, I used to trade in sites that were not trusted and also not very secure. I’ve lost millions of my Raiblocks MRI token (XRB) on BitGrail exchange. From then, I always try to search the ratings and feedbacks of the site and then trade my coins.

actually it is really a good practice . You must review and have a proper research whenever you are accessing a different websites like trading platform or exchanges or anything that has need to login your accounts that has binded on your wallets and etc. This must really need a proper research and good ratings are positive feedbacks by other users and order for you to convince that this website is legit one in order to oh if it is secure or not.

It is a mobile wallet exclusive only in my country and what I do to protect it is, I never expose it to anyone and remain as my main wallet where I store and save enough bitcoins for the future bull run.

It should but don't just be a hundred confidence the safety of your wallet unless you've been done with 2FA to further increase the safeguard of your wallet.
I once experienced when I woke up early morning I've found notification that someone wants to transfer funds from my wallet. I believe it was a hack (coz I don't make it) and luckily, that person never succeeds because it needs 2FA to confirm.

It was really important and putting our funds in online wallet is never been safe and that is the risk that we might prevent but can't really be avoided. It was our luck if we don't get to that problem otherwise, it is totally be lost forever.

Not your keys, not your coins.

True and false at the same time. Having complete control over your private keys does not mean that you will not lose that control at any time, what has happened to many and is still happening today, and there is no doubt that it will continue in the future.

Personally, I'm not surprised at those who lost their private keys at a time when BTC could be mined with a regular computer, or you could buy 500 BTC for a few bucks, or get 5 BTC on a single claim on faucets. They can say, "easy come, easy go" given that they have invested very little value in order to get into Bitcoin, but they may be sorry that they did not recognize the potential behind the technology, because in that case they would have completely different treatment of their private keys, wallet files and passwords.

I never lost access to my coins, and I always try to improve my chances that this never happens, and to point out to others that they must pay close attention to the way they treat their investment.

I have never lost an access to my wallet. I have been using my wallet for years now and I'm glad that I was able to handle it well. Keeping our private keys safe and being mindful of our actions are the secret so we'll never lost even a single amount of crypto. However, there are unnecessary circumstances where we mistakenly or accidentally lost our access to our wallets but we could learn from those experiences. Things will always rely on how responsible we are when it comes to handling our wallets as well as our funds.

If we ever think of our btc that we have and a sudden lost we cannot retrieve it once your phrase or keys lost. It's very important to have our assets to be kept all the time.

This is probably one of the most unforgettable experiences I had ever since I started engaging with cryptocurrencies. I had just merely started exploring how things work in this forum and I have realized that coin storage is one of the things that I must think of having before starting to send out applications for signature campaigns and such. Due to the research that I have been making that time, I was bombarded with so much information, it slipped into my mind to save private keys and some authentication data especially for wallet recovery. I'm lucky enough to experience it earlier before I even started putting coins into my wallet. From then on, I became very vigilant in the information I am putting in each of my account, wallet or in any online profile, and to not forget saving these data in safe place.

Could it be you login to a different computer in the past and the hacker just finding the right time to make the move that's why it is better to not just put some 2FA but to change your password frequently to avoid the hacker to login to your details again when it is just finding the right time. I am doing it frequently because I am always worried that maybe the hacker is just finding the right time to login that's why I don't give them the chance to do it.

I experienced this when I was a beginner in Cryptocurrencies when I was curious about wallets and where to store my earnings. So when I found that it was safer to put it in a Decentralized wallet this is what I used.
Almost many of us have experienced this, losing a copy of our Private keys. So here I know it needs to be taken care of as this is the only way I can reopen my wallet again.

I never lost any bitcoins because of my own mistake but I have lost some because of others mistakes. Basically it was my mother's mistake and while I regret her mistake I cannot even think of blaming her because she was completely unaware of what she had done.

I kept my private word phrases written on a paper and kept in my personal desk where I used to keep a lot of other papers too, while I was away my mum decided to clean my room and she actually thought that paper was nothing but another piece of garbage and she burnt it with other papers in the backyard and I cannot even remember how much bitcoins was there because that wallet was just to save money for the next 10 years.

I kept some of my coins on a local exchange and they had a bug where one of the users logged in and saw that his fiat deposit had multiplied. I think the comma was wrong. Anyway, had deposited 10k and the balance on his account was 1 mill, something of this sort. He used it to buy BTC and send it to his wallet and the owners of the exchange dailed to stop it. They had to take the whole site down for 3 days and most of us thought we won't be getting anything back but we did. They came back online and allowed everyone access to their accounts.
This gained them trust among some users but I took everything off the platform and never looked back. About a year later they did an exit scam and disappeared with everything, but not with my money.

Memories that hut my feelings whenever I remember. I use to have some good time with bounties which actually make me some good profits in doing them. If I remember, I was holding $420 in Blockchain wallet without me backing my pass phrase|backup, when I wanted to withdraw my funds from then, I tried to Long in to my wallet but all efforts prove aborted because I could not remembered my password and not even my backup was kept. That was how I lost what I gathered from bounties. It pains when I remember this because I was the caused of all of these.

Oh that's very unfortunate but I believe that if you had hardware problems and had blue screen issue then you should have contacted specialist because there is no way you would be loosing your data because of a hardware issue. Another thing you could have done was to eject your hard disk and just use it on another computer and save that file. But anyways things gone are gone and hindsight is always useless.

For me, I have never faced access issues but I have lost a bad number of bitcoins in exchanges that have turned scam or got hacked like the recent one is cryptopia, I don't know what happened to them.

Yes I did loose access to my bitcoins wallet once  ;D, it was way before I could realise the value of those 5$ worth of bitcoins sitting in an online wallet , it was back in 2011-2012 , then after the big break , I remembered the wallet I had back then , but unfortunately I had no idea what was the online site or the password ( been ages since I thought this thing might work )
Then I took it as a lesson and then seriously started engaging in bitcoins .
I really respect bitcoins and the whole community that lets people earn money for supporting their lives , no matter how small , it's amazing 🙏

I only ever get a case like this on the HYIP website. when I invested there and couldn't access the bitcoin that I had because I thought it was a scam site.
That is more a investing mistake rather than a technical mistake and yes even when I was new there were a lot of websites which claimed to send double back in 36 or 48 hours but I never fell for these scams because I was new to bitcoin but I was very familiar with online scams and there is no reason why someone will double my money in some hours.

in other cases, I have never had a case like that, except for a bitcoin theft because I entered a phishing site. however, so far I have kept my private keys well and my passwords stored in a safe place. so I can always access it.
That almost happened with me too when myetherwallet had some issues with certificate and users were being redirected to another website when they clicked the certificate. I almost fell for it but because I saw that something is fishy I decided not to access wallet that day and proved to save my coins, you may read about it here: https://www.theverge.com/2018/4/24/17275982/myetherwallet-hack-bgp-dns-hijacking-stolen-ethereum

I did not but I felt like I did so I know the feeling.

I had a cold wallet once that I knew the password to but did not open it for anything for over 2 years and when I wanted to check if everything is ok with it I struggled to enter the right password. I knew the words it consisted of but forgot which one was first and if there were any numbers in between and in the end. It took me maybe an hour of trying different combinations and nervously sweating to find the right one.

It just really a simple problem when it comes to hardware aspects in talks of pc  yet there are harddrive recovery services out there even the entire OS had been reformatted it can still possibly retreive it back unless if the failure do affect hdd directly (burn etc.)

Losing access can be in various ways and in my part i have lots my coins due to exchange hack too which is unfortunate but well that one do give out some lesson that never ever store your coins on
exchange wallets.

I did lose access to my bitcoins one time and that is because of my stupidity. I forgot where I put my private key, the same with my altcoins since I accidentally deleted the JSON file and just realized that after clearing up my Recycle Bin. Take care of your bitcoins you guys, especially private keys, seeds and files like JSON. IF you have a lot to hold better buy a ledger.

I honestly have not had any issue with the wallet the I am using to store my Bitcoin. There are people who have experienced losing their private keys which yield to such negative scenario. Some are being hacked, and some are being scammed. My opinion to this is to not give private information to anyone just to not be prone to being hacked. That is your money in the first place and you have the only rights to access that. Also avoid logging in into multiple devices using your wallet. If you are into online website wallets, always check the credibility as well as reviews from other people who have experienced engaging into that website just to be sure of not being scammed.

There are also hardware wallets wherein one investor could also store their holdings which provides additional security for your Bitcoin. But be careful of misplacing such hardware wallet because some hardware walleta do cost that much.

I haven't experience that thing so far, I tried cryptotalk.org and you are required to enter your wallet address to input so you will be able to earn money from your posts, and luckily I am still earning on that platform because I input the correct wallet address.

If you do not want to experience that sad thing, always double check things that you are doing online, because if you made a wrong thing, it would be hard for you to recover things that have lost. We have the line of  "Click before you think", we can apply it anytime in virtual world because that is really important to avoid some errors that you might do. Double checking is not a hard thing, it is good especially when it is about money online.

And to be more secure I am saving my password on my computer so that if I forgot it once again I can get it on my documents. The mistake I've committed before must not happen again so I do save my password offline on my device. This must be a lesson to me and to everyone that we should have private documents wherein all of your password in your social media account, wallets, and your email is there so you can easily get it when forgotten.

That is a really terrible thing, how much BTC did you lost because of that? This shows it is important to have several backups of our wallets, a simple way to backup your information is to store your keys in a text file and have a copy in an USB that way if your computer breaks you have a backup that will allow you to recover your coins, it is also a good idea to have a paper backup of your seed that way even if your USB fails as well you still have an additional way to recover your coins.

Although I have never had an issue of not being able to access my Bitcoin wallet holding any amount of Bitcoin, but I have had an issue of misplaced keys holding another assets. It wasn't a funny experience as I needed to trade the asset for fiat in order to solve a problem I had offline. I became increasingly devasted at every passing hour as I combed through all nooks and crannies of my house. It was a sorry stated for me that day. Till now I am yet to find the keys to that wallet. This is one very ugly side of cryptocurrencies. That experience taught me better ways to protect and keep my crypto assets safe and secured.

My case is a bit more complex. Normally I take backups of my Bitcoin wallets, so there is no question of losing the access. However, I had accounts in a few cryptocurrency exchanges, which are now defunct. Wex.nz and Cryptopia are some of the exchanges in which I had account. When these exchanges closed down, I lost the access to my coins. And worse still, the amount was quite significant for me, at least in the case of Cryptopia.

When i was new to crypto i didn't know much about wallets and i used to store them in exchanges and it was a low quality exchange and my account was disabled due to which i lost my bitcoin , that is exchange dont even exists now , now i have much experience and wont do any foolish things and trust anyone
more like those new exchanges that turn to be a scam. I had similar experience too but wasn't bothered much because of the coin that I have on the exchange worth less than $10 ;D. I believe wrongly on the exchange thinking it will be a good exchange and possibly one day be like Binance BNB token but it was not. My own experience is losing $50 in my bitpay wallet. My phone memory was full and I was prompt to uninstall some app but I mistakenly marked the bitpay mobile wallet as part of the app to be uninstalled not knowing I did not store the seed phrase. It was painful  :D

Since I started in crypto a lot of experiences had been experienced along the way.. I had lost some investment probably bitcoin thru the exchanges that were totally shutdown because of being such a scam exchange. Some were thru projects that launched ICO but in the end, all were FAILED. and lastly, thru trading because of bearish market.. All this can make you feel disappointed but in the end, mistakes can teach us a great lesson.

That kinda hurts though.
Wouldn't they post a notice ahead of the closure that will happen or did they just seemingly ran away with all your coins and asset or at least contact all their users through email? It seems like finding a lot of exchange isn't really that good, when you're planning to have a strategy of finding better rate for the coins you want to trade. I never knew these exchanges as I was just sticking to Binance.

Maybe I'm just a lucky person that I didn't experienced losing my access to any Bitcoin I have until now.
Or because I have done a research first regarding the basics and that includes storing of Bitcoin before I invested on it and decide to hold some.

Retrieving them is easy if you remember the keys of your Bitcoin, aside from that it would be hard to retrieve.

This is one of the most painful thing that can happen on the blockchain. I'm saying so because it's very painful to see Your Own funds through blockchain but can't access them. And always most painful when the funds are much. Hence, we all should be very³ careful about our bitcoin wallets. Sometimes it could be your phrase and other times it could be that you sent it to a wrong wallet address. Once you create a wallet, back it up on up to 3 different reachable places. And when sending bitcoins, be very sure that you are sending to the rightful wallet address because 𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨'𝗩𝗘 𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗖𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗦, 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢 𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗧 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 (𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗦𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗦𝗛𝗜 𝗛𝗜𝗠𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗙!)

It depends, even if you take several precautions and have many backups of your wallets there is always the risk something happens that is way beyond your expectations and you still lose your coins, for example even if you have many backups if all of them are in the same place and something like a fire happens you could still lose all your backups on the fire, and if you take the precaution to store them in different places one of those backups could be stolen and you could lose your coins anyway.

to be honest, all people who lose access to the bitcoin they have, basically they will try to re-access the bitcoin they have and try to take it back. however, so far I have never heard that anyone can really get it back. so far, I've only ever lost the assets that I have in my wallet. Well, I tried to get it back, but, it seems like the opportunity has gone. so I decided to replace it with a new wallet.

I have experience when, my laptop has been taken from me, I have a file their that contains all of my private key but, sadly I don't have any online back-up since I don't trust online since it can be hack anytime and this disaster happen to me. Honestly I don't expect that my money can be recover considering that, I only have one copy of it. It's been a lesson learned to me so I don't have any regrets to it. Always do a back-up as much as possible.

Not in my Bitcoin wallet because I'm to cautious about my Wallets with BTC but in my ethereum wallet?yeah once i have missed saving the private key so my coins are gone and cannot find them now.

Yes I have, just recently I lost a good amount of BTC because I lost access to my LUKS encrypted drive and never did a backup of my LUKS partition header. I will not make that mistake ever again!!!!
Is that a safer wallet?that LUKS?actually i am looking for another wallet thats why I'm asking.
When you lost access to your bitcoin wallet maybe you lost your money, but before it happen to your account better save and hold your assets and keep save data wallet in several place, or you can try by saving your wallet data by manually wrote on paper and then save in your billow, I think is best ideas how to keep safety with your ddoument.
Not just maybe but yes because we cannot retrieve our money if we lose our private keys.

Lost 0.1 Bitcoin on a phone Wallet when the App suddently forced you to create a code/password!!
I knew I will forget this code or even forget where and how I wrote it down. So some months later it happened. Thanks for forcing access codes on people that are bad with such.  ::)
Wonder how many coins got lost this way already.

Most likely those coins are lost because even if you could recover your laptop it is possible all the data has already been erased out of the hard drive, this is why it is important to have several backups, I have an USB with my private keys and I have a paper backup with my seed words, that way if something happens to my computer I know that I will be able to recover my coins no matter what happens, however I recognize that my current arrangement does not mean that my coins are perfectly secure since many things could happen that could make me lose my coins.

My first phrase wallet in the blockchain was lost because my computer was infected with a virus so I had to reinstall my windows, and I only realized after I searched for the file containing the phrase that it didn't exist on the computer. I've tried to remember it but still can't log in, even though it's not much that's still my first wallet.

So take care of your security, you will never going to lost the funds. Bitcoin transfers sometimes takes time but always transact very well so don't worry be happy

This has only happened to me once, and that’s when I was still new to all these. Okay the problem was that I was making use of a wallet, and that’s the Blockchain wallet, one thing I never knew was that for you to access your wallet you need your wallet ID.

I have been using this wallet in my android then and I never had computer, so one day I formatted the phone and wasn’t able to gain back access to the wallet. There was about $20 in the wallet which I wasn’t able to get back since I made up my mind to create a new wallet. But as time goes on I was able to find a way to get the Wallet ID’s that are associated with my old email and recovered it later.

Yes, it happened when I started knowing bitcoin and decided to invest a little money.
I used a mobile wallet and saved the screenshot of my private key to my phone storage, I am always using my mobile phone everywhere I am, even in public transport and then my phone suddenly got broken. I wasn't able to have a copy of every important file on that phone including my private key to open my wallet.

It's still common for me actually to be honest;) I used to have so many accounts on different faucets and casinos, and I would even deposit in almost every place to gamble, and then many of them would have balances too small to do anything at all (too small for min withdrawal) so I end up forgetting about them. Probably if I lumped everything together especially after price boom I would have over hundreds of dollars.
Looks like many people here have that kind of fortune with their Bitcoins and way back seven to eight years ago no one knows that the price of Bitcoin will explode in the future. Lucky for those people who kept their Bitcoins and still remember everything about it they will surely be enjoying the profits that they get from it. :D

Some of my friends were among the early adopters. A few of them got their first coins in 2012. And back then the prices were really low, and most of the users were being careless with their coins. A lot of them lost their holdings by storing them in exchange wallets, or in online wallets where 2FA was not enabled. Even I made the same mistake, when I started collecting coins in 2017. But have to say at this point that I was more lucky when compared to the other users in retrieving lost coins.

'hunting' for people who have lost access to their wallets - usually it's a scam, watch out for such people.

That is too bad but it is understandable, there are many people that have some really small amounts of bitcoin in their different accounts and they cannot do anything with it because of they do not reach the minimum amount to qualify for a withdrawal, and despite the growth in the price of bitcoin it stands to reason the fees we have to pay to the miners will go up in the future as the halving diminishes their reward so the chances that you have of getting that money back are very close to zero.

My story hurts me a lot, I came to this Bitcoin world through two older brothers, they gave me ideas about various altcoin, including Bitcoin, and told me about the history of Bitcoin, after that I had some good quality altacoin as well as their words of 2017. Some Btc's put on my Coinbase and Myether wallet, when Bitcoin gets a lot of pumps in 2017, all my Token's value goes to 85000+ USd, but I didn't know then that all these coins were on different Exchangers. How to take it, and how to sell it, then I told one of the older brothers, his name was - Dip Isfaq, After telling him he wanted my Privet key, I then gave him my Privet key, then he had my wallet. Since all the coins were taken away, I have no contact with them since then I do not know where they have gone. I get him active on Facebook, I do sms but he doesn't see my sms. And could not do anything legally because Bitcoin transactions are forbidden in our country. This is the story of my life, yet I could not turn around and adjust my life.

Post by: KrisAlex18 on April 20, 2020, 10:52:12 AM
Luckily, I haven't experienced that thing so far. I am really afraid of losing any amount of money, so whenever I had transactions before I always do double checking so I can assure myself that I input the right cryto wallet. Copy pasting is not enough when doing some transactions because there are instances that it would be different text when you do copy pasting. I have read one of the post in this forum about "sent BTC to wrong BTC wallet" because of not being careful on the things he have done online.

I do have an old bitcoin hard wallet before with a balance of around $100, unfortunately I lost my back-up and the money was gone. Thats was my mistake because I didn’t create a lot of back-up so I have to buy another hard wallet. If you have a bitcoin on your wallet, better to secure it and create more back-up so the money you work hard for would not be wasted.
That is one of the factor why I don't want to use hardware wallet because once you have lost your wallet, then you would also lost your money. For all the people who always forget things so easily, hardware wallet is not advisable to all of you.

I experienced it once and I don't want it to happen again, that was around first quarter of 2018 I think hmm (I can't totally recall). I am just living my normal life that time; I did my usual business that such as posting here, reading bitcoin news and browsing my social media. Then I decided to visit my wallet app to look at the price chart but I'm shocked because my account was logged out. I don't know how did it happen in the first place because I never log it out before and I am not clearing the data of its app neither. So I panicked so much, perpspire a lot also and feel that my world slowly crumble into pieces.

Fortunately, I was able to trace back the gmail I used for it and do a "trial & error" on my password. Fortunately, I recovered it and from now on I decided to wrote it on a piece of paper including all of my important credentials :D. That's the safest way I think since memorizing it alone is not guaranteed. My brain was filled up with tons of math formulas already, it gives me now a hard time to remember those little things all the time lol ;D.

I was a victim of a runaway scam that leads to losing access to my bitcoin. it was a promising investment method known as cloud mining and everyone seems to talk about it at that time and I also started to joined them. I was a newbie at that time and wanted to earn as fast as I can little do I know that the site is about to become unreachable in a few weeks. I got my first payment but after that, I never saw the site works again after 5 years.

There are lots of cloud mining that I've used in the past, but honestly none of them works that efficiently, I guess my expenses costs more than what I get with cloud mining. Scams are widespread until now and then, I admit I became one of those gullible person since every one started as a beginner that wants a instant money lol, gladly most of the mistakes that we have done made us smarter with our moves and become our lesson. I've lost some of my access with my bitcoin but it does not worth that much for me to work to recover it because I think it is nearly impossible to do it.

I can't say that I have lost access to my bitcoins in past. But this happened with my waves wallet with more than $1k inside it in 2017 and I wasn't able to find the private keys or the backup seed of that wallet. I had to install new operating system in my computer so I did a clean install thinking my wallet was backed up, but in reality it wasn't. So please Everytime you should double check that you have saved your private keys in a safe place.

I have never lost access to my Bitcoins, and I guess that’s because I did proper research before I started making use of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The first wallet I used required that I back up my wallets, same thing with other wallets I made use of then – the BitPay wallet and Blockchain, and I still use these two alongside other wallets. I started using it on my phone and there was a time I had to factory-reset my phone, and after that I was still able to load my wallets using the backup phrase. So I have never had such issues. That’s why it’s very important that anything you want to get involved in, you do proper research on it.

if you're a long time player, then things like this have happened a lot in the past. whether it's because of losing the private key, or even the effect of the hack. honestly, I was once unable to access my bitcoin because it was stolen directly from my wallet. whether it's due to a phishing site or not, I'm quite upset to see that happening.

Hello everybody. In my country they say - live a century, learn a century. Of course, I was losing access to my bitcoins. I was very lucky that there was not a large amount on my wallet, so it didn’t excite me very much, but, it was a very good lesson. Now I’m much more prudent - it’s advisable to keep the private key in a very safe place. And of course, like in many cases here, it was almost at the very beginning when I got acquainted with the cryptocurrency industry. Now I am more sophisticated.

On my experience, I didn't lose Bitcoin but an XRP. I have an old wallet that I cannot access anymore for some reason and the XRP that I stored their is from all of the time I wasted on claiming free coins on a faucet site. This past few months, I tried to open again that wallet, I can open the wallet but I cannot access the feature of it where all of the coins are stored. The amount is not that quite big so it's okay for me even if a cannot access it anymore.

Yes, this is about Coinbase wallet. They simply blocked my wallet from further usage just because I received some funds from a gambling site's wallet but I recovered my funds by deleting the account permanently so I got some luck though. :D But it may not happen with every user so make sure you deposit funds to you wallet if you are sending from any gambling sites.

I've luckily never lost access to any of my bitcoin or cryptocurrency coins at all for that matter, but I have "lost" funds in to the great abyss of bitcoin before.  When I was new to bitcoin I did send coins to the wrong address, and lost them for good. I just looked back and that equals about $2,000 worth of bitcoin today.  Was much less then lol.
