Title: Will bank notes replace toilet paper?
Post by: Kuffy on March 17, 2020, 04:36:24 PM
Just a thought - quantitative easing is increasing, and fiat currencies are heading towards their true value of zero. There also seems to be a shortage of loo paper, and I wondered how long it will take for people to adopt an alternative use for banknotes. :)

So it has started already. :)

This thread is slightly tongue in cheek ( is that another alternative to toilet paper? ), but sometimes I wonder if it may come to this. They were making shopping baskets out of banknotes in Venezuela a while ago for example

Yes, each sheet of toilet paper quickly became more expensive than the banknotes, but banknotes are a very poor (and dangerous) source for cleaning yourself. At some point you could use the rolls to buy things, but the problem is each roll quality differs, and the number of sheets per roll, the quality of the paper (soft harsh), etc.

A normalized toilet paper roll could indeed become a better asset of value than your hyperinflating fiat, and it doesn't spoil unless you get it somehow wet.

The older banknotes used here were in fact quite expensive "security ink/paper" made in Germany, relatively strong, good enough for making bags.

The current (3) bank notes with extra zeroes are cheaper, paper quality looks about the same but they are economizing ink and there is probably less security features. They are not very pretty to look at, all 3 are identical except for the color, they are just 10000 20000 and 50000. $1 (USD) is about BsS. 75000 (VES)... This current iteration of the bolivar had 5 zeroes slashed only 2 years ago.

If the USD halves due to inflation, all your $1 purchases suddenly become $2. Now imagine this happened every hour, and you'll quickly realize it is better to stake the paper rolls than keep banknotes that lose purchasing power. Of course, you could just buy bitcoin instead...

It happened in WW2 Germany. But look at how much they are worth now! I don't know how they make them look so clean. Do you think it is money laundering? :D

We are experiencing a strong economic crash.
However, the same happened to the cryptocurrency market.
Not in the same volumes but it is a fact. We cannot say that fiat crashed and crypto didn't.

In Venezuela, their money is already like this due to hyper inflation.  :-\

How much more the status of their fiat during this global crash that we're experiencing.

The banknote will replace the toilet paper in this case with the fiat currency the demand for the crypto market will increase but it will take a long time. The alternatives to this note will not work if many will not want to replace it and no one will support it  You also said that its position is too low due to high inflation.
