Title: Digital River pilots BitCoin as new payment method
Post by: caymandrew on March 21, 2014, 05:44:50 PM
Hello All,

Digital River and it's subsidiaries, specifically SWReg, just started offering a small portion of it's e-commorce partners the ability to accept BitCoin as an alternative form of payment.

The first such client of DR to begin accepting BTC is www.VirtualDJ.com where you can see BitCoin as an option on the buy page.

I think this is huge news as it marks the first time a major e-commerce back end, with almost a half a billion in annual revenue, has made accepting BTC seamless and easy for any website that uses their shopping cart and e-commerce services.

Just checked the virtualdj store but it doesn't have the bitcoin option. Was interested to have a pro version sometime.

Sure it does, you'll see at the bottom of this form under "Payment Information": https://www.swreg.org/com/shop/30350/details/6054055202

I don't see it either, beside Paypal, there are only 4 options available: CC online, CC by fax, CC by phone and Check. Am i missing something ?

DigitalRiver is a famous payment gateway for software companies, it would be a great news if they really have Bitcoin as a payment option.

Hmm, perhaps it's USA only at the moment? Can anyone else confirm they do see the Bitcoin option from within the USA?

Using a USA proxy I can see it (last option).

Yes somehow the merchant decided that Bitcoin is available for US customers only. Btw, DigitalRiver might started to accept Bitcoin, but merchants (software companies) has right to choose which payment option will be used to buy their software. VirtualDJ is one of very few doing that.

If some of you are seeing it and some are not, it may be regional or it may be an A/B test.

They show it to some and not others and measure its impact to answer questions like  'Does it confuse customers?' 'Does it improve or decrease sales?'  before they roll it out everywhere.

It turns out they are testing it like Tron said. They've said that they were going to do that this year:

Yes, this is huge!

Is it possible for vendors to get payouts in Bitcoins too?

They are only paying vendors in USD at the moment. I have no idea who they are using as the exchange.

Nice! I worked for Digital River many years ago. First place I worked that had Beer Fridays.

My favorite story from working there:

They had a sort of war room in the center of the building. Two doors, no windows. The walls were covered with whiteboard. The whiteboard walls were covered with the system documentation, including the only copies of certain master codes. Yep, the "keys to the kingdom" were stored only on the whiteboard.

So the boss left for vacation. Boy did he get a surprise when he returned. We had cleaned all the whiteboards so they were shiny clean!  ;D

Of course we had taken hi-res photos of all the boards before cleaning them, and put them on a server.

Yep, looks like it's available for US (but not other places). Most likely because of how tricky it could be with purchases from other countries/regions (I can definitely see snags from an audit perspective). But it is very nice to see more and more venues to use bitcoins even if it might be region-specific.

Yes, seems to be for US customers only: with the link in post #3, when I select the Bitcoin payment method, the right hand info showing up says:

Bitcoin is an Internet-based digital currency that can be used to send online payments quickly and securely. If you are a Bitcoin user, click "Secure Checkout" to check out and pay with bitcoins. Bitcoin can only be used for orders delivered to consumers in the United States. All purchases using Bitcoin are final and non-returnable; any returns policy applicable to your purchase will not apply if you pay via Bitcoin.

Gotta say, that's a slight bit unfortunate that a returns policy is unavailable for payments in bitcoin. But once again, I can see the snags since bitcoin is not pegged to a stable value (in terms of fiat and whatnot).

Just paid $49 in BTC via SW Reg / Digital River at www.axialis.com (for icons). Transaction was processed through Coinbase. Went pretty fast too.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us here.  Very good to know the transaction went smooth and in a timely fashion.  Here's hoping this is the beginning of many more transactions to come. :)

So they're using Coinbase!
This is great news for Bitcoin. :)
