Title: Stay away from this kind of giveaway!! Scam alert!!
Post by: suvo05 on July 27, 2020, 04:32:11 PM
You probably have heard about the recent twitter hack of popular personalities and companies twitter handle such as  Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, MrBeast, Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffett, Apple,  CoinDesk, Binance and more. The scammer hacks those profiles and announces a giveaway. They ask people to send ETH/BTC to a particular address and promises to return the exact double amount of ETH/BTC they received. They made more than US$118,000 through this scam.
Let's have a look at the following example
https://i.imgur.com/VXbVMoG.png.

Recently, this type of scammer moved to the youtube platform. They are playing some old videos of @ethglobal as live streaming and as similar to previous twitter scam they asking people to send ETH which they will return doubling.
Here are some URL
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoQX4hElcSU&feature=emb_rel_pause- (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoQX4hElcSU&feature=emb_rel_pause-) ---video moved.
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VivCHkbg78A (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VivCHkbg78A) ---streaming live.

https://i.imgur.com/AoL9NJ6.png
Don't send coins to those addresses, those are all scam.

P.S- I have recently made a post on the Bitcoin Discussion board https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5264914 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5264914) and some member suggest that it will be better if I post this on the Beginners & Help, as most of the old members are familiar of such kind of scam and the new member should be alarmed.

I am getting curious how this is happening. Twitter one was totally their mistake as the hackers were able to somehow get the access but I don't get the Youtube part. There are lot of big YouTube streamers whose accounts were hacked and donation stream was hosted afterwards. I haven't read anything regarding how it is happening in YouTube.

Now we know that these social media sites are not safe and they can be hacked I thought these social medias has a security features like IP and 2 factor authentication or phone verification, but what happen to the security how did this things happen,
It's also better to create a similar thread on the scam section so more people will become aware.

I haven't read anything regarding how it is happening in YouTube.
It could be due to a breach in the users Google accounts as YouTube is linked to it. There's also the possibility of the user falling for a bait link which the hackers used to gain access.

the new member should be alarmed.
Rather than alarmed they should be less greedy and quit looking for get rich quick schemes. If you buy Bitcoin and hodl for long enough you could likely double it's $ equivalent.

I am pretty much sure that the hackers from YouTube and the hackers from Twitter are the same and they are doing same fake giveaway which is double return.
So be aware from them and try to be safe from next attack.
And remember one more thing no one in this world is going to return you double instantly. If anyone ask you that then you should reply him "Plz send me only profit I don't need double.Or you can send me half of profit too."

Now Twitter and Youtube are by no means secure. The recent hacker attacks on Twitter have taught us to rethink how to keep ourselves safe. The main way to keep yourself safe is to get rid of greed, because without a greedy person you will not send your hard earned money to such a giveaway.

But Youtube has not been seen to take any action on the big channels that are currently being hacked, which could be dangerous for newcomers to the crypto market. Because they are not aware of such scams. So we can warn them by sharing more and more information about such scams, so that they can be careful.

Now Twitter and Youtube are by no means secure.
I agree with you, plus i don't think they ever were safe, but I'll want to think that after the accounts of those people (Bill gates, Jeff bezos etc) were hacked, and the giveaway/btc doubling scam was posted through their profiles, it must have created staggering awareness on this particular form of scam, remember were talking about some of the post popular individuals in the world, and the news went round the world.

After that incident, imo falling for giveaway/btc doubling scam is totally foolish and must only be about greed at this point, not lack of knowledge or even ignorance.

Recently youtube is full with this kinda fake giveway related live streaming and video ads. Basically they are targeting immature crypto investors and they know still people exist who want to be millionaire through crypto doubler. 2 days earlier suddenly i got a paid video ads on youtube where they were using ETH founder vitalik's press interview video clips on their advertisement to make people believe that ethereum owner is really giving free ETH.

You can take a look here, [SCAM ALERT] Fake 50000 ETH Giveway - Running Youtube Advertisement (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5264128.msg54856562#msg54856562)

Whenever you get something like this just use the report button of youtube and its the best way to stop them from stealing peoples money.

People should be used to deal with this kind of advertisement.

Using "common-sense" is the key here or if there's confusion, try to ask other people that are crypto-oriented.

This kind of scam will not stop since it's still effective today. Meaning, there are really people that fall in the trap. However, compared to before, I believed the number of victims now decreases. Thanks for continue spreading awareness about this kind of scam.

Education is the key weapon. We need to train ourselves to spot and this kind of fake giveaways being promoted not only in Youtube, but in other social medias like Twitter and Telegram. And to help, we should report this to Youtube as well to made them aware and hope that they are going to respond by taking down that channel. They made more than US$118,000 through this scam.

I'm surprise that there are still a lot of people who fall for this kind of scam, it's an old trick, I thought people have already learn.
These hackers I guess were disappointed that they only made over a hundred thousand dollars for their effort, hopefully there's no other trick like this anymore, and thanks for the community for spreading this news so people would be aware.

And now they are moving into a new platform, big platform as well, but since what happened is still fresh, I guess people would already know if they are reading the news and not just investing blindly. As a community member, we should take an effort to help by reporting this kind of scam, that's simple contribution would already save people from being scam.

There are a lot of things happen right now with the Twitter and some of their accounts are getting hacked and used by the other people and using this to begging on the internet this almost happen within a week and there are a lot of cases like this happening I hope they will fix this immediately there are a lot of people getting scam on those accounts because they think it is legit.  Better to use their support and report this kind of post on Twitter.

Having a video and live stream on youtube about the bitcoin and ethereum give away is not new to me because there are a lot of them and I immediately use the flag icon to help the YouTube community that this is a scam and avoid getting too many victims.

Always use the report button to help them to be aware of this kind of thing because not all the time those platforms can monitor all of the things happen.

A network of scammers like this is really troubling not only for those who might be victims but also for all those who are victims where their social media accounts are hacked. Some hacks against famous people have proven that they are really very brave to do this openly. And they do it in a structured manner globally? Or is it just a group of people? But don't they hack and scam like this they can be tracked with their transaction flow?

..snip..
You may be right that the goal of this scam is probably the newbies or common people that do not know this kind of scam. They may only know that the real account of popular people or companies is giving money. They will believe it easily. but for us as knowing this kind of scam, we should not be interested in this kind of giveaway. if we are still how pity we are.
well, let's spread about this kind of scam in order to help the people not trapped on this scam.

They are in every popular platforms, even in facebook, I've seen a lot of scammy advertisements there but it's still active as there are people who even support and like it, instead of reporting it, they even share it with their friends. What we really need is education on cryto so awareness will exist, and that will minimize the risk of getting scams. I think with the figure shared in the OP, there's an improvement as before we are seeing millions of dollars scammed from investors, so slowly people are learning.

We are in the crypto space where adoption is slowly growing, so let's hope that people will eventually get matured in the long run.

This kind of news is just normal in the space, we should get used to it as it cannot be take down fully, but if we are aware of this, this should not affect us.

There are a lot of scammers you can see on the different social media platform because this is the easiest way to encourage a lot of people and at the same time there are a lot of people right now does not have any work so to earn the additional income they need to find some extra jobs and some of them become desperate you to earn and one of this is like the OP gave which is the youtube giveaway with the use of the ETH not only this coin also the bitcoin too, at this time there are a lot of people falling into this trap because they want to earn more than their investment and sometimes they forgot making research if this is legit or not some of them becomes too much desperate.

They are in every popular platform, even in facebook

Not only in twitter and YouTube also Facebook there are a lot of pages that most of their users are making spam to the untrusted platform and to be more aware sometimes I made a comment on that thread this is just a scam, of course, some of them are brain dead and believing this is a legit platform.

I would have accepted it if it had been case with one or two or few users but there are lot of YouTube streamers whose accounts have been jacket recently. I haven't seen any official explanation about it from YouTube but they should address this issues.

Anyway these hackers are also aren't able to get away since exchanges have blacklisted such addresses from their exchange.

There have been many breaches in the recent period of the accounts of famous people and a lot of people have become aware of these breaches, so they should not fall into this fraud and not send any currencies to these addresses.

It doesn't mean that if people are using a popular social media app, that application is safe and secured. Most of the scamming scenarios happened when people are using too much social media and they don't even think twice or observe the link that they are going to access. That's the first step why scamming happens.

Even those huge social media platforms can be accessed by hackers and scammers. If you are aware about these happenings then probably it can lesson your account on being one of their victims and don't hesitate to warn your friends and family and other people towards this scams. Be alert and be mindful in social media.

Both links given by OP were already removed by YouTube.

Fake giveaways and scammers are really rampant especially in popular and big social media because they can attract more possible victims to lure. We have recently heard about Twitter hacking, now on YouTube, I bet there are giveaways like this also on Facebook. Not everyone is knowledgable about this kind of scamming tricks, that's why like what I said before, it's better for these popular social media platforms to take action and always warn their users about scammers. And we can also do our part by reporting them to prevent them from fooling more people.

Those 11,727 people watching are surely confused about what they are watching, I mean who could have tell them if those offers are true or false? if they don't know what's really going on, they might fall to the trap of the scammers. Since this guys are confused, is there any way to tell them that those giveaway is not true? If the comment section is available in the live streaming, some could spam comment to prevent them to become a victim of those kinds of a fake giveaway.

Most likely, the fact that they watched the live streaming, that means they are interested with it and you are right, they might fall for the scam.

I expect that there are people in the chat that works for the scammer will try to convince people to invest or give some testimony that they receive the money. They have already planned all these things, and if someone watching is telling it's a scam, it will not win against the scammers as they have people and since they own the channel, they can kick anyone in the chat room I guess.

"suvo05" now you can move your topic to scam accusation. Usually people search scam related topics there and your topic information will help them to get ideas about fake giveways.

Most likely, the fact that they watched the live streaming, that means they are interested with it and you are right, they might fall for the scam.
Youtube viewers like to watch new videos and specially when its crypto related. You can easily find many video contents on youtube which are actually fake but got massive amount of views. Basically scammers use attractive thumbnails on their video which help them to get good amount of view in a short time. In some cases they run paid ads to reach their targeted audiences.

People believed in these tweets because it came from high profile and someone who can be trusted easily but they forgot that the social media or other channels could be hacked as well. People right out believed in it but forgot the basic that there is always something off about if there is something which seems to good to be true.

I kept wondering if this is the latest way of scamming users now. Same information happened long time ago in the same way, many newbies could possibly fall to this kind of faulty giveaways. This is strictly a lesson covered.

High and verified profiles. You can now blame the people who sent money there, but to be honest, such an action would also suit someone like Elon Musk. Not so much Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, but definitely Elon Musk. Due to the time limit of the offer, pressure has been built up and someone who is new to the crytoscene can easily fall for it. Time pressure and greed can be a fatal mix.

I see it on youtube first, before those famous twitter accounts got hacked, I already see some fake giveaways imitating binance  and ETH (Vitalik) on youtube, these giveaways scams are not really good and youtube actions about it not really fast they don't have solution about it, those scams keep popping out. In the first place they should not allow fake ads to be published.

I'm quite surprised with the amount of profiles hacked in this attempt. The users who got tempted are probably the ones who were greedy enough to get their money doubled (in short, get rich quick) overnight and didn't give it a thought that it could be a scam. This shows that when (even) something like Twitter and can get hacked, how can we point fingers towards exchanges who give us top-notch security for our funds but still get hacked some day?

This because of lack of education and too much trust being set in the mind from the hearsay that cryptocurrency is one a fast and easy money to invest with. Here comes the scammer and open this investment scam then there many of them will fall for this trap. Besides we are global so expected our numbers here would be great and since there is a lack of education then this is the problem now that many will be scam.

It would be better to educate first the newcomers rather than just letting them roam around here and become a victim. I guess many are going to volunteer because it could be a mean of getting merits on their part.

Lack of education?
This forum has around 1000s of threads speaking the same old thing so not to get scammed (I mean, everyone here tries to save others by telling them their experience and how they got scammed). What kind of ^education^ are you talking about? It was literally greed and will always be, be it a newbie or an expert, I believe many expert in their own fields too got scammed in this and that's all due to greed. They could have searched about this and may have found many articles on such scam behavior, did they? Yes, I do understand that the number is big if we speak about the amount of people involved in crypto, but neither you nor me can save anyone from falling once they've made up their mind.

From my point of view, sometimes lack of education or don't have enough knowledge in cryptocurrency is not the main reasom why they get scammed or get tricked because it is mostly due to their greed that they don't listen on other people's advices. All they think is earning money in an easy way that there is no such thing because for you to get rich and have a successful life is to work hard and face every consequences or challenges in your life.
