Title: Bitcointalk IP lookup script ?! Updated
Post by: hugeblack on August 15, 2020, 01:29:05 PM
Has there been any update in the forum database or how to register the IP address? Because I am getting a wrong geographic IP address location, my IP address location (city)[1] is different from what I was getting in the past or when using some sites like https://www.myip.com/?

Is the problem related to my device or did I forget something?

https://bitcointalk.org/myips.php

Edit: it’s back normally ???

I always use tor and very rarely get any regular IP. But in every case the city is unspecified. Only the county is readable.

This looks similar as mine.

In my case the country is always correct. It's very strange how it alternates between registering them as US and Italy IP addresses. Are you sure you are not using any proxy?

Certain "data saver" browser extensions on mobile devices route all HTTP requests to a special server controlled by the browser company so if you are using one of those then maybe you are seeing their IP address.

Probably IPs get reassigned between ISPs overtime, and the databases being used to determine the geolocation are not running with the same content nor recency on all their records.

I’ve just gone over my log, and I wasn’t aware of having going abroad this summertime until I viewed the log ... It turns out I’ve been to Romania according to the log (this reading is the same as the one returned by "https://www.iplocation.com" for the given IP, although complete different from "https://www.iplocation.net/ip-lookup").

I am using dedicated IP address with OpenVPN protocol + disabled LAN traffic / killswitch. So I'm supposed to get the same state.

This looks similar as mine.
Is there another country or only these two countries?

In my case the country is always correct.
I was getting the same country a few days ago, maybe I need a more detailed search to find out the cause of the problem.

It's strange, the same IP address gave the same city last week. ???

Over 95% times I am United States resident, I like to visit Germany, Austria, France, Belize, and Switzerland. Except Germany, I never visited other counties more than once :-P

PS: I use TOR so, none of them make sense. Don't count my stats :-D

Me too. I use Tor and most of my IPs come from the USA (72%), the others are Germany (17.9%), France and Austria (~3%), and a few others. Locations are all unspecified cities. Nothing strange with Tor and I don't detect any strange things from my log-in IPs with Tor. :-X

From my stats, I guess US. users contribute a huge proportion in Tor nodes, I searched for answer and found some:
  • Top-10 countries by estimated number of directly-connecting clients (https://metrics.torproject.org/userstats-relay-table.html)

In my case, there are few logs which shows the city.
Me too.

Seems this site doesn't correct reading country of IP's

This my IP in Bitcointalk:
Code:
2020-08-17 03:59:28	2020-08-17 03:59:28	2405:8100:8000:5ca1::d4c:5eef	(Unspecified city), United States

When I look at TOR circuit nothing showed US country,

I am using VPN and it is expected that I will be having a different country registered in the IP address which was being assigned by the VPN. It can be also set manually to the server. Singapore and Japan is the common place I join and relatively the internet connection is fast compared to other server. But, actually i do not know how to locate my own address if I will not use the vpn. I think I need to make a search on how to verify IP address. I am started to having interest in this part of technology.

The correct city appeared on this day. I started noticing the problem on 7/30 but it solved today.
Strangely enough, the same IP addresses were giving me different countries.
I do not know what happened, but I will leave the topic for 24 hours, if I do not find an answer I will lock it because the problem is solved.
Thanks for all the responses above. :D

I changed the way geoip lookups are done to make it more accurate, and I re-did geoip lookups for the last 6 months of logs when the IP was still available. Thanks for mentioning the low accuracy.

Mine is a lot less accurate now than it was a few days ago (which I'm totally fine with).
