Title: My Litecoin Wallet Disappeared
Post by: Dimelord on March 23, 2014, 06:50:30 PM
Linux Mint 16. I shut down the server for 5 minutes and it's gone. The zip file is still there, but my client got deleted... 1.5 LTC gone with the wind...

Go to your home folder than press control H.

Do you still see the .litecoin folder?

Restore your backup wallet.dat.  You did make a backup BEFORE transferring funds to a wallet right?

No. I thought myself immune to such problems. Hard lesson learned.

Well better 1.5 LTC then 1,500 BTC or something like that.

Step 1) Encrypt Wallet
Step 2) Make backup
Step 3) Send irreversible irreplaceable funds only to the encrypted and backed up wallet.

Note: this isn't to hit the OP while down but maybe someone reading avoids a similar mistake.  Always have an encrypted wallet and encrypted backup FIRST and add funds to it second.  Would be nice if wallets had a startup up wizard (i.e. detects no wallets asks user if they wish to create a new wallet or restore, then walks user through creating a new wallet, encrypting, testing passphrase, and making a backup before ever giving the user an option to receive funds).

I use Google drive as a cloud back up for my wallets. They are very secure. You can use two factor authentication.

I'm not familiar with linux but there might be some restoration software like on windows, try to use one of those and try to find the file again

It really doesn't make sense how your wallet could disappeared. Linux Mint is either Debian or Ubuntu based, your hidden folder should still be in there. So strange.

But apart from the litecoin wallet disappeared, are there any other software which also disappeared?

This is very strange, because normally disk drive corruption or if it is damaged. You will lost more than just one specific file or program.

What did you do because shutting down your server?

Umm, it was just a routine restart. I do it once a month.

To be honest, I think you should run chkroot and Rootkit Hunter. I suspect your Linux got a rootkit in it.

Normally disk corruption or damage, you will not be losing just one program, because if they are damaged or corrupted, you should not even be able to use your pc.

Also why did the hidden file also got deleted. The location of Litecoin-QT is in /usr/bin/litecoin-qt and your hidden file is in /home/.litecoin.

They are in two different location of your file system, the chance of damage or corrupt of that 2 sector of your hard disk is so rare, you can probably win lottery 4 times in a row. That is how unlikely that could happen.

I think I found a solution for you. I almost forgot. This is one of the tool I used for Computer Forensic.

PhotoRec can recover your file.  :)

It's not a hard lesson (unless it's something that took you an eternity to mine). You only lost 1.5.

But yes, you must always back things up.

One still needs to encrypt her/his backups before storing them in the cloud.

Its a hard lesson considering that I have never ever spent a penny on crypto. All my holdings were mined or earned.

They are encrypted with TrueCrypt.  :)
