The 1867 Alaska purchase is invalid. Here is the reason why:

1. Tsar Alexander II, who signed the Alaska purchase was high on crystal meth when he did so.
2. USA paid just $4.74 per sq.km to Russia, which was abysmally low.
3. USA undertook a brutal extermination campaign against the native Alaskans after they got control of the territory.

There would be no war III if some nuclear weapons will be places on Alaska territory.

But I doubt that Alaska needs secession now, they already have enough autonomy.

If you don't like regime then declare extended autonomy. Autonomy of federation subject could vary, extended autonomy allows you to implement a fully custom regime on your territory.  :) Remember the Finland as a part of Russian Empire, for example. Borders were protected by Imperial militaries but Finland used independent political system (parliamentary republic, own police and monetary system) and Emperor was nothing more than a symbolic figure here. Another similar case is Hong Kong, it's a part of China but employs independent political system too, and Chinese law doesn't work here. :)

How do people come up with this shit?

I dunno - but I'm sure that if Alaska were to have a referendum tommorrow that had an 80% turnout it would be an unprecendented event in modern western democracy (shit, 55% is doing OK these days for US presidential elections).

If then 95% of that 80% voted in favour of going back to Russia, for whatever reason, it would most certainly be seen to be a violation of international law and everything that we hold dear in the free world  ;)  ;D

So - Obama is legit on 50% x 55% = 27.5%

Crimea secession is an infringement of human rights with 95% x 80% = 76%  ???

If the US were to give up Alaska, they'd be giving up all their territorial/mineral rights to the thawing artic circle.

They won't be doing that.   ;)

It seems that they need a new political party, like the citizens of Crimea... So, we have to send Mr. Aksyonov to Alaska...  :D

I guess that Sarah Palin could be appointed as a new Chief Prosecutor, so no additional staff needed.

One thing I have noticed is that the ethnic Russian population in Alaska is much younger than the general population.

For example, in Delta Junction only 19.64% of the general population is Russian. But among the children, the figure is 31.10%.

Rofl I can't believe this petition actually has 20k+ votes. God bless mother Russia.

But I'm still upset we sold it to you yanks. In the 1800s it didn't seem very important, but now there's so much profit from the natural resources in Alaska, not to mention the beautiful nature.

I doubt United States would give back Alaska without a World War III. The petition is a joke.

Everyone knows that the petition is a joke. The only possibility of Russian regaining Alaska is in the event of disintegration of the USA.

Putin senses the USA is growing internally weak. A significant number of "locked and loaded, take it from my cold dead hands" Americans are ready to attack the government from within, when the time comes. The "United States" corporation is losing the mandate from the governed.

The United States will probably breakup. This is not a joke. You folks need to wake up to the global economic conflagrapocalypse tsunami that is going to hit within 18 months.

http://armstrongeconomics.com/2013/12/26/224-collapsing-wave-structure-point-to-breakup-of-usa/

Quote
This Collapsing Wave structure that the United States appears to be in means it is a one-time-wonder and that the United States will break-up and the there will be no more “united” union. This is becoming self-evidence in the polarization of politics with tremendous differences in culture on a regional basis. The Obamacare is just one aspect revealing the undercurrent whereby one segment of society believes it has a right to force their views upon another group.

Marcus-Aurelius-BustSo unfortunately, the USA does not appear to be destined to remain intact otherwise we would have seen and overall structured wave of 224 years. We seem to be in the Collapsing Wave with the 224 years was from birth to peak with an overall duration of 309.6 years at best. This appears to be like the Collapsing Wave in Imperial Rome itself whereas from the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44BC to the peak in the glory of Rome and population in the city took place under Marcus Aurelius that was 224 years later in 180AD. The decline that followed brought total chaos, sovereign debt crisis, massive government seizure of capital, fragmentation of the Empire, and in the end, Rome was no longer the Capitol and that became Constantinople followed by the split of East and West. We are much more akin to the this type of Collapsing Wave formation whereby society collapses and breaks apart. Now we have the Cycle of War turning in 2014 that appears to be focused within civil unrest at least initially.

We will be reviewing this aspect as well at the Cycle of War – Gold – Sovereign Debt Crisis Conference on March 21st in Philadelphia.

http://armstrongeconomics.com/2014/01/15/madmax-v-restructure/

Quote
The future course of the United States will follow the same pattern. Pre-Revolution, you had separate states. That became the UNITED states in 1789. We will see a breakup of the states most likely banding together in regions because of the difference in cultural views such as the Bible Belt. The fight over Obamacare illustrates the stark differences and this is fundamentally wrong for it is forcing one groups interests upon another. There is no such thing as equal rights but money is the exception. We are all treated the same even in law (no exception for politicians and bankers) or we are not a nation of equal rights. You can’t be just a little be pregnant! The US will break up, but it should not go into a MADMAX event as long as we reach resistance from the people. If the people keep just watching their sports and never notice what the governments are doing to their future until it is too late, then it can go too far and that in the MADMAX event the ended the Roman Empire.

Does any one know that even now Alaska is having a sizable ethnic Russian population?

They are probably illegal aliens that snuck into Alaska from Russia to escape the oppressive Russian government  ;D

But, seriously, there is a sizeable Russian population just north of Washington DC, and north of Miami. Doesn't mean that the territory is russian, or that those people want to go back to russia. On the contrary, the sizeable populations there are there from the time they were trying to escape USSR.

Regarding this petition, I'm wondering if maybe Alaskans think of Obama as being a repressive communiist type, and Putin as an awesome ride-a-bear-shirtless type, and think they would be better under strong manly Putin than weak communist Obama. Without realizing that Russia is a ton more oppressive than USA. If Alaska was entirely populated by Sarah Palins, I wouldn't put it past them, but since I know the people there are much smarter than that, yeah, I think this is a joke.

@crocko: There were armed civilians forming a militia, as well as Berkut fighters who were disbanded and publicly humiliated by Kiev coup government. The task that they set for themselves was to protect the population from provocation and ensure that no one would bomb or shoot during the referendum.
Or do you prefer the American-style referendum, featuring carpet bombing with depleted Uranium munitions?

Crimea was able to join because it has autonomy, it's a republic with own government and constitution. Only such type of subject could be joined through this schema, that's why we see no "russian spring" in the east of the Ukraine. Despite the fact that there are very large number of supporters of this outcome. There are no autonomous subjects in the eastern ukraine, so local supporters should to create this entities to make the joining possible.   ::)

All these petitions have even less weight than UN assembly.

I doubt United States would give back Alaska without a World War III. The petition is a joke.

This seems highly unlikely but it show's a similar kind of comparison with the situation involving Ukraine.

No, they appeal to conditions of sale - respect to Russian Orthodox Law in marriage in Alaska and child education in school.

To tell the truth, there are several schools in Alaska which are teaching the Russian language. There is even a school in the remote village of Voznesenka, which teaches the "Alaska Russian" language (quite different from the modern Russian language).

Russian is one of the most popular second language options in other areas of Alaska.

Oil drilling is banned in most parts of Alaska because of environmental concerns. Almost all of the Gold is already exploited.

And South Dakota (not Alaska) is the US state which pumps out the maximum amount of crude.

Nope. Texas produces around 40% of the US crude production (including those rigs in the Gulf of Mexico). North Dakota is #2.

Americans didn't had any problem in giving a part of Serbia to the Albanians. They even bombed Belgrade and killed thousands of children and elderly people to force Serbia to do that. Why U-turns now?

Shouldn't people of Alaska decide to witch country they want to belong ?

I don't want to enforce my opinion on this people only because there is more and more nationalist movement recently.

Yes.. conduct a referendum on this issue. Let's see how much support is there for Russia.
