Title: When replying, do you make use of quick replies or do you click "reply"?
Post by: malevolent on November 14, 2020, 04:26:52 AM
To use quick replies you need to have it turned on in "Look and Layout Preferences" in your profile settings.

The feature makes the page feel cluttered to me. Whenever I've looked to use it in the past I've normally just disabled it again and stick to what I'm comfortable with...

I use the "quote" button most of the time when replying so the quick reply is kinda useless. I tried it a while ago... ended up submitting a few posts accidentally so now I have it turned off.

I do make use of the quick reply but majority of the time I end up previewing my reply before I post them.

I enabled it just to check. Felt uncomfortable so I don't plan on using it again.

It could be useful if you're the first one to comment and you don't often use the formatting tools.

You can use the quote button with quick replies, just click "quote" instead of middle-clicking it.

I find that it's often quicker to type in BBCode instead of moving the hand to the mouse, highlighting text and clicking on buttons.

I only turn that feature on whenever I'm browsing the forum using my phone [rarely] + it feels a bit weird to me while I'm using a desktop/laptop so I prefer to stick to the latter option.

I know about the option but I have never tried it out. I often reply to multiple users, insert quotes, or omit certain parts of quoted messages so it wouldn't be that useful to me. If the admins removed the option altogether, I bet most users wouldn't bat an eye.

I honestly wasn't even aware of the option. Also I mostly use the quote button to reply and make heavy use of the preview button anyway which would make using quick reply kinda moot.

I did not know the Quick reply. I give it a try with Look and Layout.

Quote
Use quick reply on topic display: show, on by default
The Quick reply window is at bottom, and it is a small window. I see the guide at left: "you can use bulletin board code and smileys". TBH, I don't understand how Quick reply can help to make post more conveniently?

I have to remember bbcode and specific character set for smileys. Is it convenient quick reply? I can do the same with normal reply. When I click on Post, the Preview window is shown and I must click Post again. It is not convenient.

I changed settings back to normal reply.

I just use the reply button or the Quote button to reply or write in threads or answer posts.
So i am good how it is and there is no need for me to change it when i want to write back to an post or thread.
Just simple , click reply and here we go , works also fine for me on my mobile.

Never done or activated the quick reply.

I have never used the quick replies, the reply button is as quick as I want it to be, I haven't tried using the quick replies and may never do, am not interested in it, the quote is also fantastic in specifying/portioning your reply, but this option is most times rubbed in the mud by un-arranged/clustered quoting.

The option is best when quoting more than one reply but seems little stressful to me to outline quotes so I had to preview it to the next page to do the cutting

Trying it now.  It’s set to “show, on by default” because “off by default” requires Javascript (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3001981.msg30868325#msg30868325) to work at all.

This box appears all the way at the bottom of the page, where it is inconvenient and I almost didn’t see it.  (Probably also a “please run arbitrary network-loaded executable code” issue?)

it is always good moment to learn something new, did not even considered the fact that there is quick reply button, and did not look into preferences to turn it on, so i am always using reply
but, i will give it a try, to see what is more convenient, and will provide an answer here, after testing, seems as a good feature

I usually type replies in the "Quick Reply" box but on mobile, horrendous when quoting someone.

I do make use of the quick reply but majority of the time I end up previewing my reply before I post them.

That's some large ass keyboard size you have there.

Just reply. Haven't used the quick reply box in years but never thought it was really quicker than just hitting reply.

I like using separate tabs, so I use the reply or quote button. Quick reply is hidden, as it should be.
I also don't use the small edit icon https://bitcointalk.org/Themes/custom1/images/icons/modify_inline.gif

Had no idea the option existed. Same goes for the very small "quick edit" button in the right corner under the message. Hadn't even noticed that one before someone mentioned it a few weeks ago in some thread.

Anyway: I click "reply".
And to edit: I click "edit" next to it.

When making a quick reply, does it also show a warning when a new post has been added in the mean-time? (Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.)

I think that's quite useful to not post the same reply, or to not post a question that has just been answered by "the guy before you". [edit: as did just happen with LoyceV's post ^  :P]

Yup, it does too since a later post could have been made before I submit my reply.

Yeah but the box is too small, especially if you need to trim or otherwise alter the quote... I don't think that I could ever get used to it or that it has any significant benefit.

IIRC it then opens the "real" reply page, doesn't it?

In your Poll, there is no option of "Never". From your this thread, I got an idea about another thread, I could create that soon about

"Never have I ever" like never have I ever got banned 👎 [Yes]
Never have I ever used the "quick reply" button 👍[No]
Never Have I ever cheated here 👍[No]

Yea it does because you must review before posting too just the same thing with the regular reply space just that the quick reply shows up under the last comment

Nor have I, and though I haven't finished reading all the posts in this thread I don't know what quick replies are.

When I'm making a post, I usually quote somebody I'm replying to--and if not that, I just hit "reply".  It's worked for me so far for over five years, so I doubt I'm going to change my habits.  Nice to learn something new about the forum, though.

Same goes for the very small "quick edit" button in the right corner under the message.
Lol.  I don't think I've noticed that one either.  Sometimes I think I seriously need to adjust my attention deficit meds, because I have a very hard time taking notice of little details like these.  Or maybe I ought to practice some mindfulness, living in the moment or something.  Then I might have a chance of being in the know about certain things--not only on bitcointalk, but with crypto in general.

Anyway.  I'm a work in progress.

I never knew this quick reply thing and after reading this thread, I believe I won't be using it. I'm fine with using the "quote" and clicking "reply" to respond to a conversation as I can take enough time to create a post and if I want, just simply add more quotes to the conversation before posting it. It's much better to do what we already know than to try out something that could create problems for us as may not be convenient in our case.

Damn, I am ashamed of myself that I just discover this feature, lmao.
Made 1.000+ posts and I didn't know this forum has quick reply feature.

I will always use the quick reply from now on, making multiple quotes will be less frustrating. I also don't need to load another page just to reply, it will help my 20MBps internet connection,
thanks.

At one point, quoting a message with 'Quick Reply' enabled would result in my browser to display a bunch of blank space below the post/preview boxes below the 'quick reply' box. I am having difficulty replicating this in this thread, so this issue may have been resolved.

I have found the 'quick reply' feature to be far superior to the 'reply' link, especially when using mobile as it reduces the number of pages that need to be loaded, and makes it easier to quote posts that are not in the last 20 replies to a thread.

Based on the responses to this thread, there is an argument to have this feature turned on by default.

In your Poll, there is no option of "Never".

The third option in the poll "Mostly normal replies" means that you never use the Quick reply option but mostly prefer the normal replies.

I myself never used this quick reply option as i never need this feature. Normal reply is quicker enough for me.  ;)

It is at the bottom of each page. If you want the option to use it, you need to enable the feature. From your profile, go to 'Look and Layout Preferences' and change 'Use quick reply on topic display' to 'show, on by default'

Ahh!  Got it.  Thanks. Now I see why I likely disabled it eons ago.  My answer to the poll:  NEVER (not a choice) so I chose the 3rd option.  :D

I thought I'm doing it the wrong way all the time ;D. I'm glad that there are users who also use the quote button. Is there any difference? But thanks for the info OP, I will try it later to see see it for myelf in terms of convenience.

I usually quote people than to make direct responses to op, so pretty useless to me.

Quick reply is easier for multi-quoting without leaving the page.

I usually construct my quote pyramids here and then if the reply is more complicated than that, it's more that I get to the regular reply section because I preview rather than post.
