Title: Notorious Coinbase holding my bitcoins in name of 'Review' | Be careful
Post by: btcwish1 on November 21, 2020, 05:40:32 PM
I am with coinbase for several years. I am fully verified user. As we see BTC is now at ATH for this year, my plan was to sell the btc now and buy back later. Before doing that I was planning to bring some more BTC from other exchanges in coinbase and then sell all together.  After transfer is completed I was ready to sell.

But before that all on a sudden yesterday coinbase sent me this status " Account under review Your account is currently being reviewed and we need some time to verify your info. During this review, you won't be able to use Coinbase. Reviews generally take a few days, so sign in every day or two to check your status."

I am fully verified so, no idea why on earth they are doing this. I sent them email and got a copy past reply!  If you remember coinbase did similar kind of things on last bull run on 2017 when their webpage was just went down at the time when BTC was hitting $20k. I couldn't cash the opportunity back then because of this. Now in this bull-run they are doing so called 'Review' out of no where and hold my account. I can't buy/sell, or even transfer my btc to other exchange! No sure if coinbase is intentionally doing this during Bullrun!

I am fade-up with coinbase and will transfer all my balances to another exchange as soon as it is sorted.

I just thought I will  make everyone aware of this so that you also don't fall for this crap at time when you need to sell/buy to grab the opportunity.

Not your key not your coin, just go noncustodial next time. So far you do not hold your private key, shit can happen like freezing of account. You would have just transferred your bitcoin to no-kyc exchange now and transfer your coin/exchanged coin back to the noncustodial wallet now.

Not your key not your coin,  just got non-custodain next time.

But how can you sell from non-custodian wallets? Most of my coins are in hardware wallets. But I was planning to sell some btc to take advantage of this bull run but because of this crap Coinbase I can't  :'(

Is there any other way to buy/sell without using exchange?

There are Decentralized exchange that you hold private key like Bisq. But it's market is very limited, Did coinbase support tell you the reason why your account got freeze? They always do that once you violate there ToS. So far we have no choice on using custodial wallet like exchange since its the most convenient way to trade. Just don't let your asset stay there for a long time after you trade.

Try to coordinate to there support. They will surely release your funds once you follow there instructions.

This is the way I do it, I make use of noncustodial wallet, and I can make use of noncustodial exchange, you just convert to btc to stable coin for that time period, and convert back anytime you want. Or, you can follow this best way, making use of Dex which would be fine, but the fee can be too high like $6 for exchanging from one coin to another but still better so far you do not trade often. There are some noncustodial wallet that have third party Dex support, you can just swap directly using the Dexs on the noncustodial wallet.

But, I would still advice you not to convert to any coin, the possibilities that bitcoin will reach all time high is over 99.99%, you can just hold your bitcoin than converting to shitcoins.

There is absolutely no violation as far as I know because all I did was sent some btc from my kraken account. I am already fully verified.  This extremely annoying :(

Why not store your btc in a wallet that's not an exchange and when you need to trade or sell, you'll transfer the sum you want to sell into the exchange website. That is safer.

you don't have to close down your account and there is no rule saying that your Coinbase account must always have a balance in it. you can continue having the account while storing your coins somewhere else (eg. a cold storage).
unless you are a day trader and are making at least dozens of trades per week, this option is the way to go. whenever you want to buy/sell bitcoin you simply log into that account deposit some funds and make your trades then withdraw out to your cold storage again.

I've never bought and selling bitcoin on Coinbase. If that is the case with you Coinbase has terrible service to its users. I prefer to trade on DEX exchanges. As for choosing CEX in high volume, I chose Binance as the exchange. I hope your case will be resolved soon so that you can resell your assets on a different exchange.

I am also a verified user of Coinbase. I have been using Coinbase since 2014. In June, this year when I logged in my account after a long time. I see the banner that my account is under review. They said it will be fixed in a few days. After 4/5 months the account is under review. They only give robotic reply, nothing else. I am unable to transfer and receive bitcoins. So, I moved to non-custodial wallets fully. I believe custodial wallet no more. I also suggest you to move from Coinbase to any non-custodial wallet.

I am not quite sure how my suggestion would be of any help but aside from directly making contact with coinbase support, you can also get some help by reaching out with their reddit moderators.

[1] https://www.reddit.com/r/CoinBase/about/moderators/

Moreover, there is nothing new with all these abrupt account restriction especially if there is an ongoing bull run happening. Take a look at their sub reddit and you'll see a lot of complaint about restrictions issues on their account. If, however, your issue has been solved -- you might want to transfer your funds to a non - custodial wallet if ever you are just going to stack it for a long period of time and then transfer it again to an exchange if you are planning to sell.

I thought there are decentralized exchange that you can use whenever you wanted to have a complete control over your bitcoin and liquidity. For now, this is a lesson learn and to sort things out it is better make good use of those decentralized exchange right after your coinbase account will be done for reviewing. In this case if it will take some time then good luck on the ATH if you can aticipate this time but for now if not then wait again for the next ATH. However, that would be some time to make it happen.

Coinbase is good for storing BTC but the infamous Coinbase holds my bitcoins in the name of 'Review' so beware of these. There are many scammers who hack using fake exchange sites this is why wallet storage should be used in other wallets. There are also many exchange sites in the crypto market if you buy and sell coinbase scams you can use hardware wallet to save money. Currency exchange and transfer are easy and many reliable sites the chances of being scammed are much lower.

If it's just that transaction from Kraken, maybe there's something suspicious about it? Even if this is not the case, it would be interesting to find out how many users were left with a frozen account at the time they planned to profit. If we go into conspiracy theories, I would say that Coinbase wants to prevent as many users as possible from selling BTC - for reasons we can only guess.

After all, you may want to join the movement Coinbase the most anti-Bitcoin organisation. Make #DeleteCoinbase great again (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5253616.0)

Sir, please do update us on what will happen here.
I am kind of intrigued about this kind of situation.
Many will try to sell at ATH and I bet they don't want to just instantly get a frozen account just because Coinbase is trying to hold them off from selling.

Maybe you should try another exchange afterward. If you don't have any problem with KYC (since you are verified with Coinbase) then go for the top exchange that is available. I bet they won't make the same ruckus as Coinbase did.

Coinbase in recent years has often had cases of user information. They were unreasonably suddenly inspecting and seemingly intending to possess the person's property. In my company, my colleague lost 12 Bitcoins at Coinbase due to inability to verify his identity, and support always refused user-provided information for no apparent reason.
So be careful when you put too much money on Coinbase, even if you have a 100% verified account. :)

This is really pathetic! I am so upset that I can't take advantage of this bullrun.  I just can't wait to remove all my coins from this disgusting coinbase.

so transfer smaller amounts into coinbase then to bank account is the lesson?

whats a reputable alternative to get funds from exchange ---> bank account other than coinbase?

Try tagging them somewhere other than their customer support? Idk if they have a twitter or Facebook, but you can try looking out for them. Even an email could be tried. Well, even with that they won't answer, I guess you can't really do anything about it, they have your wallet locked after all. Possibly trace the coins that came from your wallet that was sent somewhere else, coinbase might, just might, have seen something odd or weird in the recipients, and if yes, well you can coordinate with them to speed up the process.

The lesson learned is not to use coinbase as a wallet, or any other exchange for that matter. You can just use it as a medium to buy and sell your coins, but after that, immediately move it to your non-custodial wallet so that no one can actually lock you out of your funds.

The fund became unusable. I am unable to receive and send bitcoins in that account. The fund there can't be transferred it's locked there. I have forgot about this. I was using Blockchain. Maximum fund was residing there. I have transferred them to non-custodial one. Coinbase fund can't be moved unless they remove the tag.
Maybe the same will happen to you. Your account might not get rid of the tag. Coinbase is doing some fishy here.

If you are fully verified and don't use the account frequently,  why would they place it under review! There is more to this,
Anyways, I don't use coinbase but for those who have account with them should be aware.

This puts the potential trader in a state of dilemma, what might have triggered the suspension? Did you log your account in a new device recently? Did you give someone else your account he/she might have violated some T&C? Did you perform a live chat with the customer care unit? Or they don't have like Binance? Some centralised exchanges had better realised the meaning of "Decentralization" Bitcoin was trying to bring, why locking an account without any reason given? What makes your different from a banking institution? They'll likely unlock it when they get to see reactions on this thread.

Coinbase has this stain already in their track record. They have a lot of negative feedback and this is one of them. So you have heard of it already most probably because you have been using their services for some time. This is a reminder for you to take caution when using this exchange.

For now, since you still have some Bitcoin in your hardware wallet, you could either wait for Coinbase's finding and sell or sell for now if you have a definite price to stick to and then withdraw your Bitcoin from Coinbase as soon as you are allowed to. And leave this exchange for good. Also, if possible you better sell Bitcoin using other means aside from centralized exchanges.

Coinbase and any other exchanges are probably not evil and don't want to prohibit you from trading unless they have to. What do they stand to gain and losing out on the fees by doing so? The main factor here involves the government since most of them are supposed to be compliant with the local laws and that they have to err on the side of caution for many of the accounts; I've seen Coinbase accounts being banned for it's linked to tainted coins and Binance accounts getting blocked for using CoinJoin.

Honestly, I don't trust most of the exchanges with my coins and would rather use P2P platforms but in your case, it certainly isn't possible The only applicable advice for you is to use exchanges which aren't known to block accounts and sell it there. I don't get why would you continue to use Coinbase, they're really good at going down during price peaks  ;D

The problem is that any ban should mean they will not provide any exchange services to you but should allow you to withdraw or at the very least send coins to an address they came from. That second option would suck for people who used coinbase address to withdraw from other services like online gambling sites but would be at least partially fair.

Stealing client funds is never the right way. I stopped using them a while ago after reading of people who had similar beefs with them.

Why not store your btc in a wallet that's not an exchange and when you need to trade or sell, you'll transfer the sum you want to sell into the exchange website. That is safer.
Basically, Coinbase cryptocurrency exchnage is safe honestly, am a Coinbase user for sometime now and have been very much happy with their services' What OP tried to explained should be a user who actually violate Coinbase exchnage ToS, If this is not the case then he should contact the support team which could lead to his account recovery, to be realistic, for Coinbase to get hold onto an account with funds come with outright violation of their Terms Of Services.

As I mentioned in my post, all I did was sent some btc from my another exchange to coinbase so that I can sell all together. I did same thing many times before. There is no violation whatsoever. Also I raised the support ticket and as most of people know their support is full of crap. I asked 'WHY' my account is under review after 4 years of being a fully verified user.  Their reply was 'Your account is currently under review and it should take few days bla bla' a copy paste crap reply.  The don;t have live chat or a phone number. the number they have is for automated account closure in case of fraud and that's it. You can't get an explanation from a human being.

I don't know where they get the authority to hold user's fund? I can't transfer my coins to some where else, sell, withdraw or anything.

I think you should waiting what the respond from support team, what going on need for re submit your KYC again. I see on coinbase rule have detected with some country not available for submit KYC and coinbase not allowed for any district country to use coinbase with many rule break before, like Indonesian have banned for submit KYC and have other country get the same cases. Very disappointed if you lost your assets in Coinbase and you need waiting their respond what happen on your coinbase account, during you not break their rule is not matter for coinbase to banned and not allowed to get back your fund.

As I know, there are a few non-custodial wallets that are also Dex or they called open- source and can be used in selling but I haven't tried any of those as of the moment but you may try checking other exchanges that I guess meet your needs in the future after your concern with Coinbase.

I couldn't say that you were scammed since you mentioned that you've been with coinbase for years now and it only happens every time we are near the ATH and the only thing I can suggest is for you to get in touch with the coinbase support desk and hopefully it will be fixed before the ATH and you will not miss this for the second time.

I don't understand who gave them the authority to hold users money as ransome. someone should do something about this. even if someone violates their so called toc, they shouldn't have the authority to hold the fund!

They run their business in accordance with US law, and if you want to complain about the methods of their business then you need to contact those who have given them business licenses. Consequently, if you are a US citizen you should contact FinCENo or perhaps the SEC and complain about the proceedings Coinbase is taking against you - and if you are outside the US you should probably contact your local service which has approved Coinbase to provide services in your country.

I sincerely doubt anything can change, Coinbase is too big and too powerful at the moment and can do whatever they want - it's a US based company after all.

Coinbase made it clear long time ago that they have a data sharing mechanism with IRS. So if your existing bitcoin holding pattern doesn't match with your tax status and income details, Coinbase has the full authority to review your bitcoin and report to the appropriate tax authorities. So with Coinbase, you are pretty much holding a bank account which is visible to the authorities of US.

So it brings us to the conclusion that - "Not your Keys, not your bitcoin"! Try using a desktop bitcoin client from now onwards for better safety!

Is a big mistake to use an exchange as a wallet, people must learn this because is easy for them to leave their coins and there are multiple risks on this move:

1.- If the exchange gets hacked you will lose your coins
2.- If your account gets hacked you will lose your coins
3.- If the exchange decide it them will take your coins

So, take this as a lesson and play it wisely the next time ;)

Why not store your btc in a wallet that's not an exchange and when you need to trade or sell, you'll transfer the sum you want to sell into the exchange website. That is safer.
Then your account is going to be frozen because of it suspicious activity, and I'm pretty sure that this is the case because I have read cases in the forum in which people have accounts in different exchanges and for the most part their accounts do not present any kind of movement for months and then when they want to buy or to sell they just open their account, deposit their coins, sell them and then when they want to withdraw they are hit with that limitation.

The only time I have had an issue with KYC documentation was when using a low-resolution picture of your ID. It was probably 300-DPI which is the default for most cameras and scanners. You need to scan it at least 600-DPI so the security micro-printing on it can be clearly seen & read when the picture is viewed. Provide a high rez scan and they are happy.

Long ago I ran into this with Coinbase and in their support FAQ they had the info about resolution. I scanned at 1,200DPI and was it was accepted within an hour.

Coinbase don’t just confiscate innocent peoples bitcoin or limit their accounts.

OP, you don’t have to answer here but ask yourself a few things.

  • Are the coins in your wallet clean?
  • Did you scam somebody?
  • Have you used fake KYC docs to verify your account?
  • Are you accessing Coinbase via VPN from a country where bitcoin is banned?
  • Are you money laundering?
  • Are you part of a crime syndicate?

Like I said Coinbase do not do this to people who aren‘t doing anything wrong or against their T&C’s.

I asked the support 'WHY' my account got under review and they replied ' currently your account is under review bla bla and explained what can be done during review bla bla'  a copy paste reply!

There is absolutely no violation as far as I know because all I did was sent some btc from my kraken account. I am already fully verified.  This extremely annoying :(
I have heard other users on several dice sites saying the exact same thing. With coinbase suspending their accounts saying they are sending from the platform to other sites which violates their terms of service.
Which I find very ridiculous, if they can regulate what you can do with your own bitcoin. ::)
But it is true.

If you are purchasing any bitcoin or cryptocurrency from their platform they can do whatever they want since your using their platform to do it.
Just absurd.

Not your key not your coin,  just got non-custodain next time.

maybe you could sell to a trusted person here on BitcoinTalk

I would have to agree with philipma1957 on his suggestion if you don't have any other way to purchase bitcoin:
Find someone on the forums to do it with you, but choose a reliable cryptocurrency trader who has past transactions done in the funds you want to transact in. Such as paypal, moneygram, venmo, etc.
Just make sure they have post history here meaning not with a newbie account or someone with no trades in their profile page.

This is one of the risks you take when keeping coins within a centralized exchange who have custody over your holdings. Moreover I don't think that Coinbase is insured by an official authority, so the risk is there.
That's why I encourage people to hold their crypto holdings in personal wallets preferably paper or hardware wallets if you want to keep them as an investment.

I do not know how many times people are going to have to learn this lesson, blocking your account for no reason is even more prevalent in exchanges than what you see in banking institutions, which is why many are against centralized exchanges and centralized cryptocurrencies as we know they are going to be more oppressive than the current system we have in place so we do not have any other option but to keep our coins in a wallet only we control and use DEXs whenever we can.

I remember back in 2017 with the last bullrun, Coinbase had these unscheduled "downtime" and at the time people blamed it on the capacity issues of the exchange. They said Coinbase did not anticipate such a high volume of signups and transaction volumes.

I think this has more to do with the manipulation of the market and also to protect their Fiat liquidity.... because they want to protect their service against a Bank run scenario... where everyone suddenly starts dumping their coins for Fiat. (taking profit from the high price)  >:(

You would expect this from the small exchanges, not the mighty Coinbase.  ::)

I have had my account for a month and just received this email today.

"Hi,

Thank you for recently creating an account with Coinbase. You'll have access to the following services on your account:

Credit Card crypto buys
Debit Card crypto buys
Crypto convert (convert one crypto into another)
Send crypto to a wallet outside of Coinbase (for more information, see this help centre article)
At this time, you're not currently eligible to receive the following services on your account:

Bank Account Deposits and Withdrawals
Crypto sells
This means that you're currently unable to sell your crypto for GBP or other fiat currency on Coinbase. We're working to enable the ability to sell crypto for fiat into your PayPal account and will contact you again in the next few weeks once that service is available to you."

Is this normal? Should I be concerned about this? They're basically stopping me from withdrawing my money into the bank account that it came from, not giving any reason and telling me they'll contact me in a few weeks when I'll be able to transfer it into a Paypal account that I don't want to transfer it into. The more I think about it, the more this doesn't seem right.

Note: I transferred about $20 worth of XRP into my Binance account yesterday and am wondering if this might be related?

Although, they seem to be implying this is fine when they say this is an available service:

"Send crypto to a wallet outside of Coinbase (for more information, see this help centre article)"

well people get  treated dissrespectfully until they do something about it.
its easy to create the company and hide your person behind the company..if somehting goes bad ,then hey its not me but im just the part of the comapny.

its same like the bankers will say, hey its not me its bank building lol...

the company either bank buldings are not persons, only persons have liability becouse always money goes in peoples pockets.
if you lose coused by the company then your money is someones pocket.
if its me who will lose ill visit the company office right to way :) probably best is to visit CEO of the company. ill say thats fine mistakes are happening :) but take at least liability as the CEO of your company .

i would take also the lawyers with me and visit the office if i see i been dissrectfully treated.

It is bad practice where they literally grab you by the balls, it is the case where yelling does not help you, asking for help either, the only solution is that they release your balls, and you can definitely leave.

I understand you, especially when you have done your KYC, etc ... in my case it has never happened to me with a crypto exchange, but before all this crypto movement happened to me with a traditional Wallets ... my account was verified and they leave with this low-review shit.

They are old bad practices of the status quo of exchanges or CEx Wallets that are constantly repeated.

If you remember coinbase did similar kind of things on last bull run on 2017 when their webpage was just went down at the time when BTC was hitting $20k. I couldn't cash the opportunity back then because of this.

Well this is shit news, friend. Sorry to hear it. I've never had trouble with Coinbase but the most I've ever tried to withdrawal or buy at a time has been ~3BTC. I don't store my bitcoin with them, but i don't do trading either.

Obviously the $20,000 price of bitcoin today and in 2017 coinciding with this alarming actions on their part is suspicious. Do you think they could be targeting specific accounts based on balance size to keep from getting a "run on the bank"? You know, when everyone tries to sell at once and they don't have enough fiat or crypto themselves to cover the payouts.

Anyone else experiencing this "account under review" treatment?

This simply means you are not in control once you are using 3rd party services like exchange they are regulated by the government and have restrictions and rules that you need to follow Everytime you are using their services. Unlike in the wallet that you own privatekey you can in or out any amount you want  without worrying what will happen and  where the funds came from since you have all the control to the wallet .

If an account is banned you will never receive the funds and all of the services hold on to that funds until there is a scam accusation against them which forces them to do what is necessary and logical and we have seen that instance several times and there are situations when we provide all the documents necessary and it will take a long time to get our funds or the accounts unlocked. The only solution is to identify all these sites that have bad policies and avoid them altogether.

I will never use coinbase to store my asset. I love a non-custodian wallet and I control the keys. No one will review my identity by holding unto my precious digital gold, no way. A friend has similar experience, they promise to refund his USD, and not bitcoin which he used the USD in buying. BTC has since mooned, but USD may be refunded as at when sent and not benefit from the Btc bull run.

Why are you still using coinbase if they did a similar thing to this during the 2017 bull run. I had no idea they did that. I can't believe people are still using them years after that happened.
It's hard to feel sorry for someone who uses an exchange they know is no good. Sound scammy. I will never use CEX for this exact reason. DEX is much better and crypto-friendly, crypto was never intended to be CEX, to begin with. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Hi i'm new to the forum and have a noob question.

I have btc with coinbase, but all of the above sounds worrying. If i transfer it all to a hard wallet, where would i then proceed to sell once the time comes? I'm aware i can use P2P and the like, but for ease would the sensible option be selling it back to the exchange anyway?

So in essence, buy btc from coinbase > place btc on hard wallet > sell back to coinbase once the time comes?

Yes you can also use other exchange instead of converting it to Fiat currency you can use stable coins like USDT USDC and any other stable coins .

One of the example of the exchange that also have P2P trade is binance.Just make sure that the exchange you will use is supported in your country.

Well, that’s always the issue with centralized exchanges ; everything little move you make is a suspicious move to them and they will immediately restrict your account so that you’re not going to be able to make use of it. It’s best that you have made up your mind to stop making use of Coinbase from now on after the issue is sorted out.

I experienced a thing like this once and since then I have entirely stopped making use of centralized exchanges and I have decided to go for P2P trading and it has been working best for me, and the best part is that I am even selling for higher price than I do when I was making use of exchanges.

Some people won't listen to reason or logic and feel they know better so I guess he knows better than us and he must be a genius.  ;D The banking system still battles with fraud often so Idon't know what he is going on about. This is what I really hate to centralized exchange or wallet as they are free to do whatever they like to our accounts without our permission first. They can easily freeze our money or assets easily if they think that we are doing something shady even if we're not.

You should consider it as your bad experience and never to make it again, no one can really help you here with regards to your problem as the coinbase team is your only hope in order to unfreeze your account so you can sell already your assets. But if anyone are experiencing the same also then it will be good if they can also share their experience via this thread so the other coinbase users will become aware to what is happening right now in coinbase.

This looks really bad  :o, after transferring all your bitcoin they decided to lock your account, this is the main reason I always avoid using any third party site/app to store my bitcoin, if you used your private wallet to store your bitcoin you won't be in this mess right now, storing bitcoin on coinbase is "their hand in your pocket" kinda of scenario, they can steal your money or restrict your account if they want to I would advise you to move to non custodian wallets to enjoy freedom.

In theory you can use any exchange so if you feel uncomfortable using coinbase you can use another exchange, however at heart all centralized exchanges are the same and have similar policies and even if they do not then it is just a matter of time until they change their policies to match the market standards, also what you plan on doing could also be seen as suspicious for them, exchanges love people that leave their coins with them for the long term despite the risk that this constitutes to us, and if you have your coins with them only for long enough to make your transactions then most likely your account will be flagged as suspicious as well.

I just wanted to give an update about the situation. They finished their so called 'review' end of last year and unlocked my account.  There was no reason given as to why it went to review and no explanation what so ever.

As soon as my account was unlocked, I removed 99% of my holding from coinbase to a different wallet ( I am very glad that I did).  I left just a bit of ETH just in case I need to pay for some other projects etc.

Since ETH touched all time high today, I was thinking of selling them. Guess what??  Out of no where, I got an email today saying my account is again so called 'under review'.  I didn't even log in to coinbase for last couple of weeks and also didn't log in today. So,it can't be justified about suspicious login, or different IP, different device or whatever. I received the email this morning out of no where. I then logged in and saw that yes my account is 'Under review'.

This can't be a coincidence every single time during All time High , be it BTC or ETH!

Yes it can. I've never had any issues using Coinbase (though I use Pro) regardless of spiking exchange rates. It's slowed down several times but that's it. Been using them since 2014 and been through several price spikes with no problems.

One thing that caught my attention was the fact that you used non-custodial or transacted with such tyoes of wallets. This will definitely put you in a pickle because most systems tag them as fraudulent or illegal, which will then be grounds to have your wallet be suspended and checked. Good thing they finished up with their review just on time for you to enjoy a higher bitcoin payout.
