After hitting $16B just last week, DeFi’s TVL has since declined as much as 15% to its current position of $13.43B due to the DeFi Pulse's new Bitcoin at Work page, which now tracks Bitcoin locked in DeFi as a separate metric from DeFi TVL.

In any case, the round psychological milestone of $20B by year’s end now seems out of reach. Either way, we can’t just glance over the fact that the total growth of the DeFi ecosystem in 2020 has been nothing short of phenomenal. The space’s current +$13B TVL is extremely impressive considering how that metric only crossed $1B for the first time back in February!

Why everyone should take Bitcoin seriously

Over the past few days Bitcoin has delighted us with an unprecedented rise: the coin has topped its ATH several times on its way to its current one of $28000, and at the time of writing is trading at 🚀 $31700. We believe this is the best proof that it is time to take BTC seriously.

💎 What actually is Bitcoin?
It is a decentralised version of money in the same way that the internet is the decentralised version of information. It was the first form of electronic money that does not require a central entity to validate transactions. One of the main differences between BTC and all other forms of digital money that ever existed is that you don’t have to trust a third party to use it. All transactions on the BTC networks are fully transparent and traceable.

💎 How does it do this?
Instead of having a centralised database which one party (such as a bank) controls, the members of the network collectively validate the transactions and therefore check that the same money isn’t being spent twice. Disagreements are resolved by majority vote — if more than 50% of the computing power of the network validates a transaction, then it is entered into the distributed database (this consensus mechanism is called ‘proof of work’).

If in October 2009 you bought just $5.02 worth of Bitcoin, which is 5,050 BTC, today you would be a dollar millionaire! A profit of millions of percent in just 11 years is not bad, is it? However, Bitcoin remains a great store of value and profitable instrument, since it historically had these three characteristics:
🔹 Store of value — something is a good store of value if it keeps its value over time.
🔹 Medium of exchange — this is the key quality of money, being able to trade it easily for other goods and services.
🔹 Unit of account — when a form of money is both seen as a store of value, and is widely used as a medium of exchange, it becomes a unit of account.

Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency that gets more and more fans and followers each day. People value the opportunities it provides: anonymity, freedom, transaction speed, independence from government…

DeFi and Ethereum 2021: Forecast

Early this year different experts would chime in with their forecasts for the DeFi market development, however, it is now apparent that all of them have underestimated the capabilities of the Ethereum ecosystem. In 2021, ETH and DeFi will continue their rise, and below we have outlined a few predictions that might come true this year:

🔘 Uniswap will reach $10 billion
In 2020, the platform became the biggest DeFi decentralized application with a total value locked of more than $2.6 billion US. In 2021 the project’s TVL might grow several times. By the way, if Uniswap spikes, Ethereum price will also be affected.

🔘 ETH mining will be officially cancelled
Originally, the Ethereum blockchain used proof-of-work (PoW) mining to grow. In 2021, however, Ethereum should enter the 1.5 phase, when the ETH1 chain will be vaulted as part of the ETH2 Beacon Chain. This is when Ethereum mining will officially cease.

🔘 5% of BTC will be wrapped on the Ethereum network
Tokenizing Bitcoin on the Ethereum blockchain is in — wBTC, renBTC, tBTC, HBTC and so on, choose to your heart’s content. Last year, lots of users turned to ERC-20-based tokens of BTC to be able to enjoy profits from DeFi. The influx of new users has led to the situation where some ~1% of Bitcoin supply exists in Ethereum tokens. This is only the beginning of this trend. In 2021 we might see as much as 5% of the entire BTC supply being tokenized on the Ethereum blockchain.

What is blockchain technology?

Blockchain is a database that stores a constantly growing list of records (blocks). These records are organized in a strict sequence, and each subsequent record stores some information about the previous record. Such a database is stored on users ' computers (it does not have a single server) and everyone who keeps the database has its full copy and new records are added to all existing copies.

🔘 Is it clear? Let's explain with a simple example:

🔸 Sasha bought 6 apples
Record this fact in the blockchain (some diary) and get block number 1. Send block No. 1 to Nick, Vita, Lana, Tasha and Margo (network users) – now all they know that Sasha has 6 apples.

🔸 Sasha gives Nick 5 apples to divide them between his friends.
Write down this fact in block number 2. Block 2 contains the unique identifier of block 1. Send this block to Vita, Lana, Tasha and Margo.

🔸 Nick gives Vita 1 Apple.
Write this down in block #3. Add a unique identifier of block 2 . We send a block to all users.

🔸 Nick gives Lana 3 apples to share with her friends.
Record in the block number 4. Add the identifier of the block № 3. Send out a block.

🔸 Lana, instead of treating her friends, eats all 3 apples in a fit of hunger during the night, and when Tasha and Margo come to her for the promised apples (because they received information that Nick gave her three apples), Lana is trying to put the blame on Nick and says that he gave her only 1 apple, and the rest he kept for himself. But the entry in the blockchain tells a different story and Tasha and Margo know that Lana has eaten their fruits!

Thus, the blockchain is there to protect us from fraud within the network, making the transaction very easy and transparent!

Confidentiality, in simple terms, can be divided into two things – anonymity and untraceability. Anonymity means it is impossible to establish the user's identity while untraceability makes his actions impossible to be traced back to him.

When it comes to confidentiality in cryptocurrencies, most of them have the ability to provide anonymity, however easy it is to lose it. Untraceability, on the other hand, is not fully achieved as through analyzing transaction logs a researcher can identify certain users if anonymity of at least one of the involved addresses has been compromised. There are a number of main methods used to achieve confidentiality in the cryptocurrency space.

AMPLIFY continues publishing a weekly DeFi news digest. The total value locked (TVL) in DeFi is currently $23.85B, $1.85B up since this point last week. 

Zooming in on individual dapps, lending protocol Maker is still notably above the $4B TVL mark. It’s the first DeFi project to have achieved that feat as of last week, so let’s see if it can keep up the momentum and similarly be the first project to crack $5B.

🟠 18.01.2021 - 24.01.2021

AMPLIFY continues publishing a weekly DeFi news digest. The last week was great! DeFi’s total value locked (TVL) hit a new all-time high of $25B on Wednesday. 

In the meantime, per individual TVLs the lending protocols Maker ($4.23B) and Aave ($3.22B) remain DeFi’s largest dapps. However, in recent days we saw Uniswap ($2.98B) overtake Compound ($2.88B) for 3rd place and Curve Finance ($2.26B) replace SushiSwap ($1.88B) in 5th place.

The popularity of search queries related to Bitcoin has almost reached its all time high.

The number of queries for the word “Bitcoin” started growing early October 2020. At the time, Google Trends showed it was at 9% from its historical maximum, and Bitcoin was trading around $10,500. The number of people searching for information on the original cryptocurrency was growing along with its price. By January the 1st, Bitcoin reached $28,000 US, and its interest metrics were at 42% of the peak level of 2017.

Currently the popularity of this search query is at 78% of its all time high. Most often the first crypto is searched along with such words as “exchange”, “Bitcoin Cash” and “Ethereum”.

By the way, almost 95% of Internet users looking for information on crypto through Google are male. According to another search statistics analysis, just 4% of Ethereum traders are female. This data demonstrates how women are much more likely to miss out on these very important market opportunities.

However, one shouldn’t wholeheartedly trust these kinds of reports since cryptocurrency holders are anonymous, which complicates any real gender analysis. Supposedly, no less than 20% of those employed on the cryptocurrency market are women.

☑️ What is decentralization? Decentralization is a process of distributing the power among all the participants of a system, without a central governing body. Today, the majority of traditional financial and state systems are centralized, and this approach is plagued with flaws. The main issue is that they have points of failure: a security breach or a central server/facility malfunction negatively affects the rest of the system.

Originally, cryptocurrency was developed as a decentralized network that has no single point of failure, which makes it democratic, more stable and efficient compared with regular money.

The technology behind decentralization in Bitcoin and most other cryptocurrencies is called blockchain, and it gives every user the ability to serve as a node that checks the validity of transactions.
What do users get from decentralization? Here are a few key advantages that users get from decentralized systems:

Originally, cryptocurrency was developed as a decentralized network that has no single point of failure, which makes it democratic, more stable and efficient compared with regular money.

The technology behind decentralization in Bitcoin and most other cryptocurrencies is called blockchain, and it gives every user the ability to serve as a node that checks the validity of transactions.
What do users get from decentralization? Here are a few key advantages that users get from decentralized systems:

🔘 No need to trust a central authority that might be incompetent, vulnerable to attacks, or even have ill intentions.

🔘 Less censorship. Governments often restrict their citizens’ access to various websites and social media. Censoring traffic in a peer-to-peer network is much more difficult, because every package can be sent to every other node on the network, and they will relay this data further.

🔘 Most of the applications on the network are open source. Anyone can copy some or all of the code, and create their own applications with it. The more decentralized products come out, the more advantages and opportunities open up for the network users.

📍 What do global markets look like today? A huge portion of the supply chain cannot get credit. Financial institutions hardly grant credit down the value chain (2nd and 3rd level suppliers).
Why? Traditional credit-granting mechanisms rely on the credit rating of the 1st level enterprises (core enterprises) - If and when non-core enterprises get credit, the costs associated with the grant are too high.

📍 Another problem is that it is difficult to verify the authenticity of trading transactions. Supply chain finance is based on the credit rating of core enterprises. However, financial institutions must verify the authenticity of the whole trade flow, which is expensive, inefficient and unreliable.

📍 As a result, the financing and risk costs are high. The capital liquidity is poor. Traditional financial institutions’ model is very centralized and limited to core enterprises. Non-core enterprises — especially SMEs —suffer therefore of inefficiency in credit granting, difficulties in clearing settlement, backward multi-party cooperation system and review system.

📍 We see the future of the market as completely different! This is exactly why we leverage new technologies such as blockchain and smart contracts to build a new reality, where everything is transparent, simple, and inexpensive. Every transaction is easily verifiable. Non-fungible Token (NFT) — since it is NOT interchangeable, they can act as proof of authenticity and ownership in the digital realm. This feature allows using them for tokenizing intangible objects, where they serve as proof of ownership. These rights are recorded on the blockchain, which cannot be forged or altered in any way.. So, NFT has two important properties: UNIQUE and LIMITED.

NFT are issued on the Ethereum blockchain. In the NFT a lot of standards are adopted, but the most prominent of which is ERC-721. Or for example recently improved standard is ERC-1155, which allows single contracts to contain fungible and non-fungible tokens, opening up a whole new range of possibilities.

Like other tokens, NFT can be stored in a personal wallet, typically a Trust Wallet. It should be noted that NFT cannot be copied or transformed without the owner's permission - even by the NFT publisher.

As we have already said, such tokens prove your ownership of something. These tokens could be a collectable item, an investment product, or something else. A huge portion of the supply chain cannot get credit. Financial institutions hardly grant credit down the value chain (2nd and 3rd level suppliers). Why? Traditional credit-grating mechanisms rely on the credit rating of the 1st level enterprises (also called core enterprises) - If and when non-core enterprises get credit, the costs associated with the grant are too high.

Another problem is that it is difficult to verify the authenticity of trading transactions. Supply chain finance is based on the credit rating of core enterprises. However, financial institutions must verify the authenticity of the whole trade flow, which is expensive, inefficient and unreliable.

As a result, the financing and risk costs are high. The capital liquidity is poor. Traditional financial institutions’ model is very centralized and limited to core enterprises. Non-core enterprises — especially SMEs —suffer therefore of inefficiency in credit granting, difficulties in clearing settlement, backward multi-party cooperation system and review system.

💡 What does AMPLIFY propose? A decentralized supply chain financial B2B2C infrastructure providing contract credit or asset mortgaged credit to companies that normally are left out of the traditional credit granting system. We will achieve this by bringing together the benefits of on-chain protocols (governance, liquidity, traceability) with off-chain stakeholders (legal & accounting firms, financial institutions, etc.) to ensure the value safety and legitimacy of the on-chain assets.
