Title: Electrum - How do I add BTC into my balance from my receiving address? (Newbie)
Post by: tomatocat123 on December 29, 2020, 03:15:39 PM
I'm a newbie, please help!

I have some BTC in my received address, & I want to add it to my balance so I can sell it.
How do I do this? It's confusing.

Thank you in advanced  :D

It should already be in your balance, check the bottom left of the screen. It'll either say the amount you've sent or 0 (+amount you sent unconfirmed).

I only have 0 in my balance, but my receiving address has 0.005xxxxx amount  ??? ???

Did I do something wrong here?  :(

First of all, are you seeing the transaction in your wallet? The balance should appear automatically.

Go to the addresses tab (View>Show Addresses) and right click on the address and right click to select spend from.

Are you sure of that? Have you checked the balance through a block explorer? If no, you can paste your address in blockchair.com (http://blockchair.com) to check the balance.
If you have received bitcoin in an address belonging to your wallet, the balance should be shown unless your wallet is not synced.

Look at the circle at bottom left corner of the window. That should be green. Otherwise, your wallet is not synced.

Looks like it.

Where did you download your Electrum from? Did you verify it with ThomasV's PGP?

I don't remember verifying it.

Damn this sucks, well I guess I have to learn the hard way.

Thanks for your quick reply+help.

That sucks. Do wipe your computer, in case your OS got infected with a malware as well, they happen pretty often.

As for the verification process, here's[1] a very well written guide.

Make sure you not only download and check Electrum, but also create a completely new wallet, since the old one is compromised.
Also, depending on your long term plans, it may worth considering to buy a hardware wallet; at 60 EUR it should worth the added security, probably depending on the amounts you plan to buy/handle.

All we can determine from that screenshot is that your wallet received ~0.005 BTC on the 21st Sept... and then the ~0.005 BTC was subsequently sent somewhere else on the 12th of Oct. If you didn't initiate the send transaction, then your wallet was compromised in some way.

The most likely scenarios are:

- Someone has a copy of your 12 word seed (did you store it digitally? screenshot? text document? email? cloud service? ???)
- You downloaded and installed a fake version of Electrum that automatically sent your coins out. Check your browser history for where you downloaded Electrum from.
- Someone got a hold of a copy of your wallet file and any password that the wallet file has. PC is possibly still compromised.

You might also want to consider wiping your PC and reinstalling the OS to remove the possibility of any malware lingering around.

I saw the transaction history based on the image shown above is quite old and it was the last few months ago.

Probably your transaction was stuck on mempool due to the network was a bit congested at this moment and you're putting a small fee and if you have time to check your transaction, please check it before concluding that you have been scammed.  Just put it here, https://blockchair.com/ even your wallet address to check if there is an ongoing transaction.  If there is, and if the transaction is unconfirmed it will bit delayed displayed to your transaction history.

But if my conclusion is wrong, no doubt, you have been scammed, never use that wallet again and clean your PC as suggested above.

Do you remember sending a transaction?

If not, do you remember what you did on the day the transaction took place? Did you download any new software?
A malicious version of electrum should have stolen your coins immediately. I wonder why it happened more than 2 weeks later.

Did you securely store your mnemonic code and wallet file? Anything "odd" you remember?

The possibility of your pc being compromised exists. But if your coins got stolen because of another reason (e.g. mnemonic code stored in your emails), then your computer might not be infected at all and therefore a complete wipe wouldn't be required.
