Title: S17 pro weird temperature differences between chips and pcbs
Post by: Magaiveris on December 31, 2020, 10:39:29 AM
Recently started mining with Antminer S17 pro. Noticed a big different in temperatures between chips and pcbs on the same unit.

the differens is more than 20 degrees. Is it normal?

Usually was mining with S9's so the temerature differences was just a few degrees.

They tend to have pretty large temperature differences. 2 of the temperature sensors on each board are near the air intake, and 2 are near the exhaust. The ones near the exhaust run hotter since the chips between them and the air intake heat up the air. Most of mine are in the 10 to 15 deg difference, so your miner has a bit more swing than normal I think. The hashboard heatsinks might need to be cleaned out, they tend to collect dead bugs and lint that gets sucked in through the air intake and clog up the heatsinks.

Good point, will take a look inside for any unwanted stuff, because visually doesn't look like it would need any cleaning.
Meanwhile tested different run modes and actually setting it +10TH temperature gap became less, around ±15 and temperatures maxing out at 80 degrees with fans hitting 4500rpm.

And generally about temperatures of s17 Pro, i can find only PCB max 75, what about chips, what is the average temp you have?

Your temps are okay.  If they go over 85-90 you can have issues

Yeah 80 is fine. Mine run in the 60s and 70s for max temp in the winter, 70s and 80s in the summer.

It's probably a good idea to give them a cleaning though, just take both front and rear fan plates off and hit it with a vacuum and compressed air if you have it. After months or years of running tons of air through at fairly high speed, they collect garbage, and since the temperature of every chip isn't monitored you can run into issues eventually. I've been repairing miners for my host, and so far all the ones I've looked at have had some level of blocked heatsinks. Mostly dead insects.

@wndsnb
Yep insects can be harmful for the gear,
I've had an European wasp fly in the summer in to my DIY soundproofing cabinet and it was stuck (and dead) under the cabinet's slower rpm fan blade...  :D
So it clogged the fan but after I removed the wasp, the fan luckily started to spin ok again.

The temps look fine to me as well, the fans seem to be spinning at about 50%, so unless it's freezing cold where you live - then all good.

Here is a sample of one of the S17 pros I have

Fans are set to 90% and ambient temperature is between 10-15c.

Yes i have temperatures just above 0.

Yes i have temperatures just above 0.

just above 0c and some chips are at 80c with almost 50% fan speed isn't all good, you either are not moving enough air out of the room so miners are sucking hot air back, or the miner is full of dust and needs cleaning, I think if everything is fine you shouldn't see anything above 70c.
