Title: Is bitbox02 good?
Post by: juanfernandez on January 05, 2021, 06:26:14 AM
Hi. I am interested in buying my first hardware wallet. So far the only ones that interested me were Leger Nano S and Bitbox02.
The Trezor T is not on my budget and I don't like the Trezor One.
I can buy the Ledger Nano S from an unofficial seller (due to customs issues it is not convenient for me to buy it on their official website) so it generates doubts.

How recommendable is the Bitbox02? Does anyone have it? Do you receive updates?

Thanks!

I don't own it, but I've been considering buying one.

It comes with high ratings from Bitcoin.org (https://bitcoin.org/en/wallets/hardware/bitbox/), supports Bech32 addresses, and is open source. They release firmware updates every month or two.

Keep in mind that BitBox02 is Bitcoin-only. If you plan to store altcoins, you should choose something else.

I'm not saying that the BitBox02 is bad, but personally I would only use hardware wallets(or wallets in general) that already has numerous reviews; hence, the only wallets that would be in my personal recommendation list would be Ledger, Trezor, and Coldcard. Mostly though, for the masses, my recommendation would be Ledger and Trezor due to them being a lot more noob-friendly, and Coldcard for the more 'techier' crowd as it's a lot more inconvenient to use, in exchange for it being more sort of "trustless".

If you're really interested in it, go ahead and do more research. I haven't really heard of anything bad about it (though I haven't heard of anything good about it either lol).

Trezor is still one of the best hardware to use, but just due to preference you do not want to choose it, but that is not bad when their are alternatives. The ledger nano data breach has been making many people not to want to use ledger nano again and also putting many people in doubt. Some people were threatening even on calls and messages and also many phishing attempts. It will not be advisable to buy ledger from the ledger wallet official site, it will only still expose your data to the world which can be very detrimental in the future or later. If you see a trusted reseller, that is still good and make sure it is new if you after your open it. It will newly generate you seed phrase and also you will be able to set a pin.

I have never use Bitbox02. I have been using Trezor for long time and I have no problem. If you are new to crypto then go for ledger Nano X because it's user friendly.

How insecure is it to buy from an unofficial reseller? Could the firmware have been modified?

From what I see in this article (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002481534-Check-if-device-is-genuine) the risk is that I have already created a seed but not that I have unofficial firmware. Is this correct?

It makes me insecure that it does not come with any security seal although this is done on purpose

Bitbox02 is fully open source and it is swiss made hardware wallet with two years warranty and with same secure element ATECC608A like in ColdCard Mk3 wallet.
I didn't use it myself but I like it, it has some advantages compared to other wallet, price is ok and I would use it instead of ledger or some other wallets.

Keep in mind that BitBox02 is Bitcoin-only. If you plan to store altcoins, you should choose something else.

This has been the case so far, but they have also made a multi edition version that also supports 1500+coins/tokens and will be available from February this year at the same price as the Bitcoin-only edition.

I personally like it, and it can definitely compete with Ledger and Trezor. Of course, when buying, take into account your data and if you can buy from authorized sellers in physical stores for cash.
