Title: List of fake wallets on Google Play, 3 active at the moment!
Post by: Rikafip on January 10, 2021, 09:48:49 AM
Since almost every popular crypto wallet has its fake version on Google Play, I decided to make this list in order to make it easier for everyone to report them, going with the logic that if more of us report the fake app Google might react faster and remove them, making less people loose money.

This list will be constantly updated so please report all cases in which app is still available on Google Play. I plan to check current status very often, so in case you see wallet status is marked as "active" please report them. It will only take a minute of your time and it might save someone from making a huge mistake. To make reporting easier I also provided direct link to the app, just please make sure not to download the app.

Important: Always download apps directly from developers website!

One more fake wallet appeared on Google Play, and this time it's Atomic. I honestly never used that one, but since it's often used by scammers I guess it is pretty popular among android users. App was released last week but it's already full of fake reviews. I contacted Atomic via Telegram, asking them to report the fake app directly and share the warning for their users, but somehow I doubt that they will do the latter.

Please report the app, it will only take a minute of your time as it  might save someone, and remember to always download the apps directly from developers website!

The increase in the number of fake wallet apps from 2020 to now on Google Play should be a strong warning to anyone involved in the world of cryptocurrency. We all have the potential to suffer losses if we are not careful in installing this wallet application. The increase in the price of bitcoin has prompted scammer to carry out their duties in various ways including creating fake wallet application.

My little advice to the OP, I think you should enter the original app download link for every fake wallet you find and have reported in the thread without having to enter the code so that users can easily reach the site and download the app. Only the fake wallet download link should be disabled.

My mean:
Original wallet download link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.atomicwallet

Fake wallet download link:
Code:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.valades.cobetane

By the way, the best idea right now to prevent people from getting into trouble with the fake wallet in circulation is to report it for deletion by the google team. Only a small task will be of significant use to any cryptocurrency user. I agree with you.

This is why I don't use mobile app for my crypto wallet not only that it's risky because of this fake wallet but once your phone lost or got stolen, you might also lose your funds or holdings, also because of apps that are sometimes injecting something for backdoor access to your phone, I'm am more on desktop wallets and or hardware wallets.

Google team are so irresponsible, this is not the first time that the listed fake wallets on playstore have been reported, last year many exposed these wallets and google team did nothing about them, to all google playstore users I want you to know that you are on your own, make sure you stop downloading crypto apps from playstore, this is the only way to solve this issue right now

As a total newbie in this topic (I use a couple mobile wallets since ages and I haven't researched the field since then), first of all, thanks for the warning, I hope you help many beginners who read this first; but as an iPhone user, are there fake wallets too in Apple's App Store? Someone could assume that there aren't, as you are talking here just about Google, and how badly they manage their store.

I think that it is not impossible but it is harder for iOS as they keep higher standards for the Apps to get accepted; but this is just a subjective opinion, I would like to hear it from someone who knows more than me on the topic (as i stated, I am still a newbie ::)).

Thanks in advance for the answer, and thanks again to Rikafip for the OP's warning.

Nice thread OP, this fake wallets are still there and beginners and help section is just a small section for the bitcoiners to notice. We may not fa into it but there are really bitcoiners that fall into this phishing wallet app and a simple download of those fake wallet could be mean loses of possible thousanda of bitcoins depending on the users capability to owning bitcoin at the time he uses the fake wallets. Hopefully, this will be seen to all though B&H again is a small section. Is it allowed to post the same topic and content to another board or section?

Very good thread by OP. That's what we should do when we want to download a wallet. There are many new investors in the market and they are not aware of these kid of scams. Personally, I use iPhone and in AppStore there are not so many fake and shitty apps. I have never faced with a problem like that and I hope nobody loses their money because of these kind of scams.

This is a very good initiative. This list must play an important role to warn us all. But there are more fake wallet on google playstore. You should add it on this topic. I think following topic will help you.

While making this list, out of curiosity I also checked iOS App store as I wanted to see situation there, and I found only one case of a suspicious app that could be a fake wallet, but I wasn't 100% sure. I will occasionally check iOS and might update this list with those apps as well, if needed.

That's true, chances of fake wallet appearing on iOS are significantly lower than on Google Play, but it can still happen of course. No system is infallible and mistakes are bound to happen, but with Google it can't be call an exception or anomaly when they have at least 13 fake wallets at the moment. Worst of all, it usually takes them couple of weeks to remove those fake apps.

It's true that iOS is generally safer, but I still wouldn't recommend getting something as sensitive as crypto wallet from App Store. Getting them directly from developers website is certainly a better option, just make sure that you are not entering a phishing website as that can happen too. People usually don't care much about their own safety until it's too late.

All those reported fake wallets are already removed from Google Play, that's why they weren't included as I see no point adding them retroactively and cluttering the list if apps were removed months or maybe a year ago. I only included reports of the apps that were still available while making this topic. In case i missed some report and app is still available, pleasen mention it here and it will be updated asap.

Yeah, there is so many fake crypto application that we can see in Google play store, I am hoping that they will do something about this thing because there are so many newbies in the world of crypto that may become a victim from this kind of scams. Always be careful about downloading any apps even those not related to the crypto wallet because installing a fake application may lead your money at risk

Don't know why google let this kind of apps listed on them maybe they didn't do any verification before they add an apps to their store and its really dangerous for newbies if they pick the wrong app since they might lose everything they have. That's why I suggest everybody to report since maybe this one could help them erase the fake apps.

And we should not really download a apps everywhere since there's many incident of phising attack happens and its a huge mess for us if we became a victim of this kind of antics again.

Most of the links I have clicked have been deleted, so you can adjust the status in the table.
Unfortunately, continuing to update such lists means that we fight in the dark and thus scammers are one step ahead of us, it is better to teach beginners how to download the wallet from a trusted site (verify the authenticity of the signature,) report scam wallets, and thus we have added more strengths.

The bright side is that most of these fake wallets contain less than 10 downloads.

If you try to access the fake wallets link via android mobile phone you will see that they are still there. For some reason few links are not working when accessing through PC.

That's why I mentioned in the first post that wallets should be downloaded primarily via developers website. But the fact is that majority of people are not doing that, so those that can see the list can help and report the apps and spread the awareness. The more of us report, better the chances that Google will remove them in the reasonable timeframe, or at least I like to think that. Fighting scammers will always be a whack-a-mole game, that's how it is.

The bright side is that most of these fake wallets contain less than 10 downloads.
From what I could see, all but 2 have over 100, while 2 Jaxx wallets have more than 5,000 downloads. And basically all of them have fake reviews.

The easy ways to install any wallets and to prevent you are installing fake wallet by visiting their website. All companies will give a link to download their official apps from their website, so you will be safe to install. When I'm not sure to install any apps, I always open the sites, just need to spent a minutes to make sure we are using real apps

You may want to add this to your list:

Code:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.kodular.yassine_benajem99.MyEtherWallet
and
Code:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.kodular.yassine_benajem99.Trust_Wallet

Thank you for reporting, fake wallets have been added to the list.

One more fake wallet appeared on Google Play, this time its fake TRX wallet. Wallet has been uploaded 2 weeks ago and it already has more than 1,000 downloads. Hopefully no one entered their seed phrase, as that would mean they lost everything they had.

Fake TRX wallet

Real TRX wallet

Another fake Mew wallet has been added to the list

@Rikafip, I would also like to report a fake MEW on Google Play.
The wrong spelling was the flag that this is fake.

Code:

Two more fake Exodus wallets appeared on Google Play, so now there are at least 20 fake wallets available. Some of them are there for more than a month now, and still no signs that they will be removed anytime soon.

Since SafePal is prevalent in social media like Twitter because of its airdrop and free giveaways. Someone also created a fake SafePal wallet on Google Play Store, so watch out for Fake Applications and Scam Telegram Groups. However, its phony application is already removed on PlayStore, but we still need to be careful with this kind of scheme.

According to their Developer Distribution Agreement:

Quote
8.3 Google does not undertake an obligation to monitor the Products or their content. If Google becomes aware and determines in its sole discretion that a Product or any portion thereof (a) violates any applicable law; (b) violates this Agreement, applicable policies, or other terms of service, as may be updated by Google from time to time; (c) violates terms of distribution agreements with device manufacturers and Authorized Providers; or (d) creates potential liability for, or may have an adverse impact on, Google or Authorized Providers (for example, if a Product has an adverse economic, reputational or security-related impact); then Google may reject, remove, suspend, limit the visibility of a Product on Google Play, or reclassify the Product from Google Play or from Devices. Google reserves the right to suspend and/or bar any Product and/or Developer from Google Play or from Devices as described in this Section. If Your Product contains elements that could cause serious harm to user devices or data, Google reserves the right to disable the Product or remove it from Devices on which it has been installed. If Your Product is rejected, removed, or suspended from Google Play or from Devices pursuant to this Section 8.3, then Google may withhold payments due to Developer.
https://play.google.com/intl/ALL_uk/about/developer-distribution-agreement.html

And their Content Policy:
Quote
We don’t allow apps that mislead users by impersonating someone else (e.g. another developer,  company, entity) or another app.  Don’t imply that your app is related to or authorized by someone that it isn’t.  Be careful not to use app icons, descriptions, titles, or in-app elements that could mislead users about your app’s relationship to someone else or another app.
https://play.google.com/intl/en-GB/about/developer-content-policy/

It seems that they rely pretty much on the above wording to shield themselves from responsibility of product impersonation such as wallet malware clones, and leave it largely to the community to detect and report these cases. Of course, this seems insufficient, and one could imagine a few more procedures that can be set into motion to mitigate these sort of events from happening so easily.

Fake Jaxx Liberty wallet
Code:

14 fake wallets have been removed by Google in the last couple of days, so at least there is some good news. Their reaction could still be faster though as in a couple of weeks (which is their average response times) chances are good that someone will download the app, enter seed phrase and loose all the money. Please report three newly added fake wallets; it will only take a minute of your time and it might save someone.

As I check almost every day and searching crypto wallets, it was a surprise a lot of options will appear. Even BTC and ETH have no escape from this.
For the growing numbers of fake wallet apps, it should be the time for google play store to regulate it and to know which one is fake or legit. And they should have to removed ASAP or not, even to tag as fake/trusted.
I'm in consideration with the comments but as we know that some feedbacks been paid and manipulated, that seems not safe by then.

Google removed four fake wallets in the last day or two, so with this newly identified fake Coinbase wallet there are overall 6  active at the moment.

How it is even possible that they allowed to be in a store?

Google is notorious for not screening any kind of applications and content on their products from their own app store, Youtube, and their search engine you will see a bunch of malware, phishing sites, and other scams which will make you definitely see at least one especially with their SEO. What's the sad thing about this is they rely on their own customer feedback before they will bring down an app which is one of the worst prevention techniques done by any content providers out there. Literally anyone can upload an app in Google playstore and they won't have any kind of good screening process in it so there is a big chance that they will just re-upload their phishing apps.

It's true that Google sucks in that regard and that there is a lot of room  for improvement but I don't think that they don't check apps at all. Problem is that they don't manually check each and every app made by a new developer. Or at least to manually check an app if there is already similarly named on available on Google Play.

I do like to think that they still block certain amount of phishing attempts, no matter how sucky and fallible their screening process is.

There's many fakes recently so I think google should implement a strict listing on their platform since those phising site is so alerting and if they control the apps to be listed for sure phising apps will decrease and provably have possibilities gone on their platform. As of now since they are allowing it since maybe they don't really look on what type of apps has been listed maybe a simple report might give a big help since for sure if those one will get reported the dev will find ways to eliminate those dangerous apps.

Nicely done on this list, OP.  I have no doubt there are complete newbies to bitcoin who'll get scammed by these fake wallets--and I'm assuming that's why they were created in the first place.  If you're new and don't know what you're looking for (or looking at), it's nearly impossible to tell if something is genuine in the Google Play store unless someone's already dropped a warning feedback or something.

As bitcoin keeps going up, we're going to start seeing more of these creative scamming methods.  This is the aspect of cryptocurrency that I detest:  the space is full of dishonest people and outright scammers.

I do wonder how they manage to get such wallets officially in the playstore. Doesn't that require a very official procedure?
Apparently not if they're getting them listed.  And yeah, you'd think Google would do some due diligence on the apps they distribute, but obviously it's not much if any at all.

While Google probably checks some of the submitted apps manually, huge majority of verifications are done automatically and that system obviously can't detect fake apps efficiently. Add on that it costs only $25 to submit an app on Play Store so no wonder that is swarmed with fake versions of popular crypto wallets. They covered their ass with TOS in which is stated that they are not responsible for any damage caused by apps not developed by them  so why spend more money to make platform safer? :p

On the other hand, Apple is doing much better job when it comes to detection of fake apps; verification is longer therefore more thorough and app submission cost is higher (you have to pay $99 to be part of Apple Developer Program in order to be able submitting apps) so its not a popular choice for scammers.

If you're new and don't know what you're looking for (or looking at), it's nearly impossible to tell if something is genuine in the Google Play store unless someone's already dropped a warning feedback or something.
Yep, they are perfectly aware of the constant influx of complete newbs and that's their target audience. Huge majority of those people are used to getting all their apps through Play Store so they won't think twice whether crypto wallet is legit or not. Worst of all, looks like Google doesn't care much about the issue at all as problem is not new and it keeps escalating.

After not getting enough results from phishing websites these scammers are now using google play store to attract newbies. Honestly its hard to stop them where we can only help new crypto users by detecting this type of fake wallet app. Its not like that only they are making fake reviews to make everyone believe that its a real app and delivering honest services but i have also seen some ecommerce app who are using fake reviews to increase their downloads.

Thanks for creating a separate topic and giving continuous update about app removal. I am gonna submit a report from my end and hopefully playstore authority will take appropriate action.

When you see how cheap is to publish an app on Google Play (approximately 25 USD) and how relaxed Google is when it comes to checking the submitted apps I am surprised that there are no even more of those fake app wallets than there are now. Since I started tracking them few months ago, this is the best situation so far with only one active wallet (that I was able to identify, there might be more) while there were period when there were eight or nine of them at the same time.

But nothing we can do about it other than reporting it to Google and hoping that they will be removed in the reasonable time frame.

Nope, that fake Exodus wallet hasn't been spotted here for now so I added it to the list, and of course reported it too.

When I look at the list of so far reported wallets, basically 1/3 is Exodus. I don't know why is Exodus such a go-to wallet among scammers, do people really use it that much so scammers are going for the most popular android wallet? I personally never used it, and neither did any of my friends I really had no idea that Exodus is that popular.

Only reason I can think of is that it is a multi-currency wallet, so not just bitcoin but newbies will download it for other altcoins as well. I have seen multiple websites phishing sites who were spreading lies by using the name "Exodus". You will get a good number of exodus based fake telegram channels where these scammers continuously add people from other groups. Having multiple fake Exodus wallet in Playstore indicate that scammers are still making money by using this and a good number of crypto users have knowledge about exodus.

Yeah that makes sense, that scammers target those multicurrency wallets simply because they can reach more people that way, and if they make fake myetherwallet or electrum for example, less people will be interested. One thing that also might make Exodus popular target is the fact that Exodus developers are not so much fussed about fake wallets with their name, at least that was my experience when i contacted them on several occasions.

Then again, since it only costs ~25 USD to upload your application on Google play, no wonder we get all sorts of fake wallets there, including those that are not very popular.

What about IOS?
Last time I checked few weeks ago I couldn't find any fake wallet available in Apple store. Generally, it is much harder for scammers to get app there simply because Apple is much more strict and demanding than Google is, so I guess scammers are reluctant to even try. Another thing that might discourage them is the fact that to even submit an app on Apple store for verification you have to pay $100, which is 4x the fee Google has. Add on that the fact that Android is more popular and you get the current situation.

By the way, if you find any fake apps on Apple Store, feel free free to report it here (or anywhere else in this section) and I'll add it to the list.

 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nowtips.copy
Yep, it is fake wallet, different logo doesn't mean that they are not fake. Just look at the screenshot below, on the left its the MEW wallet description that you shared and on the right side it's the original. They are obviously impersonating the original wallet, even claiming that its "Ethereum's original and most trusted wallet" while we know that's obviously not true and that they are lying.I reported the fake app and will be added to the list.

Good find by the way as this fake wallet has more than 10,000 downloads.

@Rikafip

I found a fake SafePal wallet and the logo is almost the same, it's just different and the fake name is "Safepal Wallet"

So I suspect it's a fake app with a size of 2MB.

Safepal Fake:

Safepal Real:

Yeah, that's without a doubt another fake wallet. As you noticed app is way too small (compared to real one which is 29 MB meaning almost 15x bigger) and on top of that they have fake reviews+ they took app images for the real one. Thanks for reporting and hopefully it gets removed soon.

The list has been updated with the two new findings today and four previously reported Exodus wallets has been marked as "removed" so for now here are at least two active fake wallets on Google Play.

Every time I wonder how it is possible that such fake wallets are allowed in the playstore. I thought they had very strict admission requirements and that you don't just get into that with software. But apparently it works. Kind of a big bug actually.

It's not really a bug but more of a negligence. Google simply can't bother with this and doesn't want to check each app from a new developer manually but they rely on some kind of automatic system which as we can see doesn't work the best, and probably even cant be as good as if verification is done manually by a human.

Google covered their ass with TOS stating that "they are not responsible for any damages caused by apps on their store that are not directly released by them" (or something along those lines) so there is that. On the other hand, Apple has much more user friendly approach and they do heck the apps thoroughly, making them much safer for a newbie/average user.

With that being said, getting app directly from the developers website is still the safest way!

Three more fake Exodus wallets showed up on Google Play!

This thread is mainly focused on android users as Google Play is more prone to scam wallets, but just a heads up for iOS users: Apple isn't infallible either and despite their strict screening process of new apps (at least stricter than Google) , fake apps can still be found there.

Recently fake Trezor app appeared on Apple Store, and unfortunately one user, while not knowing that Trezor doesn't even have a mobile app, used it to store 17.1 BTC, which of course he lost in the end as app was obviously fake.

Christodoulou went on the App Store last month to search for a mobile Trezor app to check his Bitcoin balance via phone. Unaware that Trezor does not currently provide an iOS app, Christodoulou downloaded a doppelgänger Trezor application that boasted close to five stars, giving the impression that it was indeed an official app. After entering his seed phrase, Christodoulou said that his savings of 17.1 BTC were stolen.

Thanks for letting us know! The list has been updated with your finding, and after checking out those 9 previously active fake wallets it looks like Google managed to remove all of them. At the moment there is only one active, and even after i did some checking I didn't find any others on Google Play.

I do hope that they started checking app submission more thorough and this is not just a temporary situation after which we gonna see again ~10 fake wallets available.

So i use google play store on my chromebook.  I use iphone for phone.

But is it possible to download apps where it could be like a video game or something and then it is some malicious software?  Someone mentioned the case where someone downloaded what they thought was trezor on their iphone but the creators of the app put a legit app first... then once it cleared apple... they made it into a fake wallet etc.

It's entirely possible. Better be safe than sorry, get the app directly from developers website.

First sorry, for the late reply, despite telegram bot notification I completely missed your post. Those two fake wallets have been added to the list and of course reported to Google!
