Title: Make sure you get legit bitcoin and its wallets, resources
Post by: tranthidung on March 20, 2021, 10:50:42 AM
Bitcoin is moving to the Moon and you won't be able to have enough fund (if you are not millionaire/ billionaire) to buy 1 BTC. Scammers will appear more and scam you. They can scam you with fake deals to sell Test net bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash (a most famous shit fork from bitcoin) and remember there are many other clone coins with Bitcoin as prefix in their coin names.

Most famous scam website
Code:
https://www.bitcoin.com/

  • Trying to scam people that Bitcoin Cash is a real Bitcoin (in ticker, color (initially they used Orange color, not Green)
  • Example with one archive from Wayback Machine: Wallet for the scam site (https://web.archive.org/web/20190428084027/https://wallet.bitcoin.com/)

Screenshost (the second screen shot is taken from @pooya87's topic, it's my unofficial thanks to him.

Notes
  • Visit official pages of bitcoin community and bitcoin developers
    • BitcoinCore.org (https://bitcoincore.org/)

    • Bitcoin forum (bitcointalk.org) (https://bitcointalk.org)
  • Don't visit and use
    • bitcoin[dot]com
    • It is a scam website from Roger Ver to shill Bitcoin Cash (BCH). Don't trust that site when you buy Bitcoin, download bitcoin wallet, whatever things relate to bitcoin.
  • It is not enough, if you don't verify your wallets

I think you was not aware about new update from Bitcoin.com sites, because they're already stop promoting fake Bitcoin (Bitcoin Cash) become Bitcoin and Bitcoin as Bitcoin Core. But this doesn't mean we can start to trust them since Roger Ver can change his shady behavior in the future. IMO they need to change their domain to Bitcoincash.com, so it will not misleading newbies.

Thanks. I see and I left the link to Pmalek's topic in OP.

Your opinion is what I noted in OP. Don't trust any wesbite, and always verify your wallet. Now, that scam site can give you link to download real bitcoin wallet but who knows when they will change and give you a fake wallet.

They won't. Their ultimate aim is to impersonate bitcoin and try to mislead as many newbies as possible. Do you notice that in the screenshot, they mix Orange and Green colors?

Scammers never admit that they are scammers. If they change it to a new domain name, it is the unofficial admittance that they are scammers. :)

Looks like their tactic failed badly because Bitcoin Cash is going down steadily:

But it's an important point, many people still think Bcash and BSV are good altcoins for diversifying, while it's clearly not the case. Such people missed big profits by not just holding Bitcoin BTC.  :'(
I hope that Bcash and BSV will continue losing relevance and after some time we'll only know them from history books: "Look that shitcoin, people really paid for it 2,000$ a piece back in 2017, it is unbelievable". And Faketoshi will be known as the worst scammer making the most money for obvious lies.
But we still have shitcoins like Ripple and Tron.  ;)

So plenty reason to do DYOR.  :)

Ah, good ol' Roger Ver, one of the best early Bitcoin advocates. Shame that his huge passion for a decentralized currency has to shift to a shitcoin fork just because he thinks his Bitcoin narrative is what matters.

I had almost downloaded a fake electrum wallet before when I was using google search engine and found electrum wallet pinned above from the results as an advertisement.

The fake electrum site appears to be sophisticated copy of from the original site of electrum in which I can't really tell of the two site visited are fake. Fortunately I know how to check the link of which one is right and then found out the fake one.

Lesson Learn,

Not all informations provided in google is right. Some of it are works of fraud people. This is why I support the OP to always make sure specifically in creation of bitcoin wallets that must be legit and not from a phishing site. There are many cases of this that has been reported about stolen btc which has been transferred from another wallet keeping the owner of the wallet unaware until such the owner of the wallet see the balance and the transaction that has been made by the hacker.

Simply we do not want any more victims fall for this trap. Of course we want more people to use bitcoin so that sooner or later bitcoin adaptation will going to happen wether it is approved or not by the government. It is the bitcoiners that will speak in behalf of making the balance of using fiat and a digital decentralized currency which is not under of any control like the government. This is somewhat a freedom for us to move our money without any third party involved not like the fiat currency.

It's 2021 mate, use a reputable adblock browser extension such as uBlock Origin[1]. It doesn't only block ads(such as what you've seen on the top of the list of Google's search results), but it blocks trackers as well, which is great for privacy: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

  • Don't search and blindly believe in results you got.
  • Believe or not, the matter is verify wallets (see links in OP)
  • Off topic but it is given to show official website can be compromised. Security warning: CLI binaries available on getmonero.org may have been compromised at some point during the last 24h. (https://amp.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/dyfozs/security_warning_cli_binaries_available_on/)

It is not sophisticated when you are cloning a website. Even the official website can be compromised so make sure you always verify GPG signatures.

Thanks for this one mate, it will surely help a lot in removing troublesome ads that has been paid by the fraud people. I get paranoid sometimes especially if I am not too sure of the site that I was looking for. Sometimes I end up doing nothing and forgetting about the search due to confusions that the result I might get into is not right even if there are reviews or feedback of it already to indicate that it was legit. I still will try to avoid it as when I get paranoid.

Just to add.

Bookmarking official websites especially for electrum may look simple but it will always come in handy specifically when you decided to update your wallet. This method will not just save you from wasting lot of time but also reduces the probability that you are entering a fake/malicious website. But still, even if you have bookmarked the webpage, verification is always a crucial step in which you would not want to skip along the process.

You can use many method but the last vital step is "Verify wallet", that's it.
  • You can remember a website or not.
  • You can use Google to search for a wallet.
  • You can bookmark a website of a wallet.

All are fine if you verify wallets you download before you use it to store your bitcoin. Of course, you should remember some important websites and have your own documents to use, just in case. Don't rely on results from third-party search engines.

I thought you were talking about bitcoin mixers and how people can stay away from tainted coins LOL.
There have been a lot of newbies scammed by this shit trick but luckily for some reason, it's decreasing. I can't remember when last time I have seen such a complaint here while back in the day, I used to see a few complaints on this every week even.
