Had this auction closed 24 hours ago the value of this coin would have went up x2.5 (likely before he shipped it) in which case someone may have wanted to just have him peel the coin and send the Doge directly and get x2.5 their BTC back + have the physical (ya sure, it's peeled) coin. Obviously doesn't make sense to do if you really wanted it as a collectible, but there will likely always be more of these for sale and I don't think Doge is going to stay at the current price range long-term.
