Title: Why is it that Ethereum is closed source but other currency being open source?
Post by: alaown on April 18, 2021, 07:58:29 AM
Why is it that Ethereum source code is not found on Github where people can actively contribute to it and also why isn't Vitalik Buterin actively working on the source code on Github or am I missing out on anything? Their competitor "Cardano" is open sourced and anyone can submit a PR to actively work on the project which I feel is very beneficial to the community.

I am not sure why you think Ethereum is closed source? Do you mean certain protocol updates?

As far as I know Ethereum is fully open source. Otherwise it wouldn't hold that much value. Nobody in his right mind would put billions into the network without knowing whether the source code contains some backdoors.

As for updates, I don't know how transparent they are about that during the research and coding phase.

The public can actively contribute to the ethereum development through EIP

https://github.com/ethereum/EIPs/tree/master/EIPS

You can try to see that there are a bunch of EIPs that already created by the community but the final decision will be on the ethereum core developers combined with the votes from the miners as ethereum is using POW. You are missing something maybe

It definitely is open source just see their github repos it's full of their source code waiting to be forked by some people and there's nothing to hide. Even how ETH gonna be developed depends on consensus meaning on top of being open source it's decentralized also being controlled by the community who use the coin itself.
just try to get a glimpse of their github repo: https://github.com/ethereum and see the pull request. Also, vitalik is actively reviewing the pull request (his last review was this month) and the ETH repo was supposed to be contributed by various people so yeah he might not stick out as much.

Thank you guys so much, I was a little confuse as to why I couldn't find the source code but I guess I didn't dig deep enough. Btw I'm new here and I'm already loving this community. Everyone here is so friendly and approachable  :)
