Title: What happens to the coins after your death ?
Post by: JohnBitCo on June 27, 2021, 05:05:30 AM
In most of the cases when the person dies, his crypto would become useless if his family member do not know about his keys.

I do not usually tell my password or keys to anyone and i know majority of the people don't do this. We are being taught to keep the keys safe.
No one think that one day he will die and in that case, his family won't be able to use those savings (bitcoin/crypto) if they don't know the keys.
Also people won't like to share keys with siblings or wife because they can misuse them . So what could be the solution to this  ???

If the people really don't want to share their keys it's their right but those coins will be dead as well since it can't be access so if you really don't want to share your keys maybe you could make a riddle and ask your family to share it online or to them that if you die, they would try to crack the code and if anyone gets it then the coins will be theirs.

There's no other solution if the person really don't want to share their keys even if you try to force crack their wallet it's impossible.

Dunno, people I know have sorted this out, and gave their spouses/family members some sort of instructions what to do in case something happens to them. I did the same, and several of my closest family members have access to my seed phrase. They are completely clueless when it comes to crypto, so they are instructed to contact a friend who will explain them procedure to access the crypto in case something happens to me.

One of the possible solution if you don't trust anyone, yet wanna pass your crypto onto someone is a dead man's switch. You may wanna look into something like FinalMessage (https://finalmessage.io/), in which if you don't do certain action for set amount of time, message will be sent to designated people with instructions how to access your crypto.

Depends on what measures you've put in place when you were still alive, if you don't have anything then that bitcoin is already a lost coin that will again contribute to the permanent increase of price of bitcoin, you really don't have to plan about it ahead of time, it just makes you anxious that your death could happen any day.

May be there could be one option. Everyone should right down the keys in their Power Will and submit the same with their lawyers. I think that way they can protect the privacy of the keys legally and will not be afraid of loosing them ever. Whether we die or not we will know very well they will be used somehow.

Teach them how to crypto first (wallet access through seed/priv. key, storage, security and all other basics) while you're still alive. You can also find suggestions from this article - Prepare your bitcoins. For your heirs. (https://shiftcrypto.ch/blog/prepare-your-bitcoins-for-your-heirs/)

When a person dies he won't gonna need to worry about what he left in this world let alone some crypto assets he left in his hard wallet. That's why if we really want to share our blessings, we need to set up who will inherit them after we perish. There is lots of basic information on how we can teach the person we want to take everything we have after we left this world and they can be as easy to explain to them. But the most common is teaching them the basic today so when you are not here anymore, they can get everything you have and spend it the way you want it to.

I think you should trust someone and tell him about your pass or key. Well in that case i am doing a simple strategy though we know nothing is secured in online so we Shouldn't keep our key in any online store that's why i am writing all my key in my note book. And i already told my younger brother about that. He is soo young we still didn't give him phone. I just tell him all my account access in this note book if something happens with me you can access all account from this notebook. But not now when you will known about bitcoin or crypto currency. Its my believe to trust my own Brother. What we should do. Because they are my family. Why we earn money? Obviously for them so we should aware them about my profession. Its my believe others can be different thank you.

If you do not tell your password or keys to anyone, your coins will remain in your wallet and buried for a long time until someone can know the password.
There is no solution for that if you do not tell your password, what you have will not be accessed by your family.
If you want to give your coins as a legacy, you should tell them the password or at least, you can try to make a testament for your family and give it to the right person you trust.
If something wrong with you, that person must tell your family all about what you did in crypto and give them the information that they needed to access the wallet.

If I am not mistaken the topic has been talk for so many times in the forum.
But I guess it would also reappear because of the sudden death of McAfee.
Our crypto investment would remain on the wallet of course it would only be moved or used if we would let someone know how to access our wallet.

Lets suppose 50% of the people share their keys so that in event of their death their coins could be benefit to their family. The rest 50% don't share keys and those bitcoins could not be used after their death. This means that supply of bitcoin will keep on decreasing as many of those bitcoins will be practically not usable.

Just make a testament or will whenever the time comes to you. If that won't work, teach one of your family members how to make wallets and how to recover wallets.
That will suffice your worry but you have to be sure that the person you'll be teaching is trustworthy.

Or a much better one would probably teaching them right now about bitcoin and then have your important information locked in a safe place and then let them do what they want to do with it, you are already dead so it's pretty foolish to think about it.

After all, how could someone very close to not care, do not want to understand or even to be untrustworthy, I don't think that's possible, of course he/she will be good responsive to you, here you just need to teach him/her until he/she really understands and wants to hold on to trust.

It's a good idea, but I don't like the way it is set up. Having a centralized service store your encrypted message, which will presumably be your seed phrase, and handing out the decryption key to your family and friends is the wrong way to do things. You are still trusting the service in question to properly encrypt your message, to securely store that message, and not to have the unencrypted message stolen by other malware or attacks on your computer. Very few people will choose a decryption key with 128 bits of security, meaning the security of your seed phrase will be reduced the whatever the security of your password is.

Much better to give your family and friends your encrypted seed phrase, and have a third party service store and email out the decryption key.

Everyone should right down the keys in their Power Will and submit the same with their lawyers.
Again, you are now trusting a third party with complete access to your coins if you hand over your keys or seed phrase in plain text. Better to give your family members your encrypted seed phrase and store the decryption key with your lawyers.

I think on the legal side the most reasonable and best solution is to leave all the information in the will with the lawyer.
After your death, the lawyer acts based on your instructions in the will and gives the selected person all instructions on how to access your crypto wallet.
Such information is stored in a secure place in the legal system and is not accessed by anyone until the start of the legal process.
I think this is the best and safest way to solve this problem.
Of course, it is much easier to choose a family member right now and give him all the information to access your crypto wallet.
If you don’t trust your family, who will you trust?  ;D
There is no alternative to these 2 solutions, it is likely that crypto funds will be lost after your death.
It is easy to criticize both solutions but what then do you suggest as an alternative?

You're certain? There's no way that someone might glance at it in a filling cabinet somewhere? Or that it might get scanned and uploaded to server, and someone might take a look at it? Or when you are updating your Will that an intern somewhere might be handed the old copy to shred? I would never hand over your seed phrase or keys in plain text to a third party, regardless of how reputable they are or what processes you think are in place. Things go wrong and things slip through the cracks all the time.

It is easy to criticize both solutions but what then do you suggest as an alternative?
What I have outlined above - encrypted seed phrase with heirs, decryption key with lawyers or other trusted third party. Alternatively, a time locked transaction. I set up a transaction moving all the coins in my cold storage to my heir's address, but timelock it so it cannot be broadcast before block 741,000 - roughly one year from now. I hand this transaction over to my heir. Once we hit block 741,000, they can broadcast it and claim all my coins. If I am still alive, then at some point prior to block 741,000 I move all the coins in my cold storage to a new address, thereby invalidating the timelocked transaction they are holding, and provide them with a new timelocked transaction, this one unable to be spent prior to block 795,000, roughly another year on. Timelock can also be performed with Unix time if you want to be exact and don't want to depend on the variability of the average block time.

I have my wallet keys saved on my hard drive and my son and wife have the password to my hard drive but are only permitted to use it on my instructions or when am not accessible to use it. This has helped me to secure my coins, I can't afford to risk my digital assets so I let my family have access to my keys and passwords.

It is one of the most frequently asked question in the forum and I think bitcoin or crypto developers would find or make a way on how this can be solved. A sudden death can make your coins go to waste so it would be best that you have some back up files left to your family so that they can access your earnings if ever you die accidentally or unexpectedly. I just hope the developers can make some kind of memorialized option for those who encountered unexpected death wherein through legal documents revealing the relation of a certain family member, they can access the account or withdraw to make use of it.

My better half knows all my wallet keys since then and vice versa so I believe that my coins are safe no matter what happens. We're starting to teach our daughter things about crypto so she'll also have an access to it in the future. We must have at least a single and trusted person to share our wallet keys with because we don't know the possible things that could happen in the future.

Yeah I know, its not really ideal, just one of the options.

True, that's a better way. For me personally just giving seed phrase to my wife and parents works fine, but I know that not everyone can trust theirs (which sucks I might add). My wife asked me (half joking lol ) do I trust her with seed phrase, to which I told her that I would divorce her already if I don't trust her with something like money.

But what if something happens to the hard drive? Just few months ago my SSD stopped working after only couple of years, thank God I didn't have any important data there and I don't wanna even think about what would happen if I had something as sensitive as wallet keys stored there. Sure, you can restore some data, but its a major pain in the ass and AFAIK you can't retrieve 100% of the data.

My point is, you might wanna consider saving those keys someplace else as well, just in case.

When you die your bitcoins die with you  8) This decreases the supply hence making bitcoin more valuable.
The only way anybody else would be able to access your bitcoins would be if hackers find a way to access your device where you stored bitcoins or if some way to access your keys.
Also, if you are willingly letting your acquaintance to access your keys then they will get the custody of your bitcoins.
For now I have just said my brother that I am holding cryptocurrencies and I am planning to letting him know how to access my coins in case of any unfortunate event.
In future though, if I get the benefit to accumulate more coins then I am planning to somehow give it back to the community.

After you die and you don't share your private key and your password with any of your family I believe nobody will be able to access your wallet after your death which is very bad and if you tell them your private key they will definitely miss use it so the only thing I believe is the best thing to do is to make sure you have a diary where you write all your password and your private key which after your death they can easily see it and your coins won't just be in your wallet.

Absolutely not. Any such system would by definition mean that through the consensus of a number of third parties - the developers, in this case - anybody's coins could be moved or withdrawn without the consent of that person. If you do that, then you destroyed the very essence of what bitcoin is by requiring complete trust in a number of third parties. If you want a third party to be able to move your money, then go use a fiat bank.

For me personally just giving seed phrase to my wife and parents works fine, but I know that not everyone can trust theirs (which sucks I might add).
I always find it pretty sad when people on here talk about how they can't trust their partner with knowledge of their seed phrase, in case their partner steals all their money. You are in a committed relationship with this person, but you can't trust them not to clear you out and leave at the first chance they get? You've got bigger problems then figuring out how to leave your bitcoin to someone after you die.

For now I have just said my brother that I am holding cryptocurrencies and I am planning to letting him know how to access my coins in case of any unfortunate event.
What if that unfortunate event leaves you incapacitated or dead. Saying to him "I'll tell you later how to access them" is useless. You need a plan in place now.

My habit is that I usually don't tell anyone my password or keys, I just write some important things in my diary and maybe when I die. No one knows of its existence. Because of everything I do or any secrecy about the coin, I am very careful and careful not to want anyone to invade my privacy. I just like to be alone and independently

This question has been raised before and the answer stays the same: it's good as dead assuming that you kept your private keys to yourself.

Our BTCs are stored in our wallets that are protected with our respective private keys. In the unfortunate event that you die, no one will be able to access your wallet without which knowing the private keys; that is why it is somehow advisable to create a safe-lock containing all of your essential items/documents for your heirs to manage.

This is where establishing a will comes in to play.  You can write up a will, have it stored in a safe place and require it to only be viewed upon your passing, which is all stuff you can set up through lawyers.  It's important that you make sure a couple people are aware of these plans, just in case you were to tragically pass with the only other person or persons who know about what you have going on in terms of your Will.  I created a topic about this a few years ago I would highly suggest reading- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5134350.msg50703294#msg50703294

They have even written books about this very topic  - https://www.amazon.com/Cryptoasset-Inheritance-Planning-Simple-Owners/dp/1947910116/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=estate+planning+bitcoin&qid=1555850417&s=gateway&sr=8-5

If you die and nobody knows your password, you'll become the eternal hodler.

Since the coins you originally owned will never ever move again, they won't be sold on the exchanges which means the other people that control their coins will potentially benefit from your sacrifice by having higher bitcoin prices.

This is something weird to think about LOL. I have my hardware wallet and a metal with my seed key. I'm trying to teach my family how to use this. Apart from that, I have written some direction on a paper with the metal. I believe if I'm not here, they will be able to recover my coin.

Considering my lifestyle, I hope to live for long years. But, we we should always think about any situation. A year ago I said my sister, mother and my girlfriend about my fund and how I invest. So, they know what I do and they can use all the assets I invest. Also, I wrote all my recovery codes on a peace of paper and I did put the paper in a super safe location. In that paper I write some words for my family and I did advice them to use the coins for a good purpose such as donating for poor children. However, I'm not sure if they will even find the find the paper or not. However, some other people may want their assets to be buried and inaccessible after their death.

There are many threads that discusses about the coins we hold after our demise and the most legit one is that you can write a Last Will or Testament with the help of a lawyer so that all the coins reaches our family after our demise and with the pandemic situation it is a necessary that we should do these if you are holding huge amount of money in cryptocurrency as you never know what happens in the future even if you are healthy and young.

at least we must have the intended heir to hold the private key wallet and be able to access it when something unexpected happens to us.
The inheritance method for wallets like this has been discussed a lot in this forum and even many methods can be used to store private keys safely and only a few approved people know.
If you have many valuable digital assets or have 100 Bitcoins for example, it is very necessary to do all the heir preparations. lest the Bitcoin can not be opened by anyone, when we are not in this world anymore.

You can hire a lawyer and make a last will testament about this, and explain it there how to access your bitcoin to your heirs.
This is everyone's common problem, when they had died and did not tell their family about his bitcoin and it will not recover anymore, his bitcoin belongs to the forever lost bitcoin that estimated 20% of the entire supply which mean unrecoverable.

We should aware of this, that's why I now start thinking about the best idea when we passed away who will benefit our crypto assets knowing that they are also aware of how to use it and convert it into fiat.

this is a very complicated issue to be resolved, you asked a question about in case someone dies as the relatives will have access to the coins of the person who died, but there is another question that is also very important and serious, which is:

in case two people get married and then separate, how is the division of currencies? Do coins count in the inventory of goods that must be shared?

how is the children's inheritance if the parents have coins?

these are very difficult issues to solve

Well, you have a point, this is a very complicated question because there are possible consequences and it will depend on the situation.
Perhaps all you have to do is write down the private key and put it into your valuable belongings something in a vault or any safety place that belongs to your valuable assets. In that case, once they found it, they will surely have proper research on how to use it, --everything is now on the internet and there is too many tutorials how to use bitcoin, for sure your family will not hard to understand what it bitcoin and how to use it safe.

I just hope the developers can make some kind of memorialized option for those who encountered unexpected death wherein through legal documents revealing the relation of a certain family member, they can access the account or withdraw to make use of it.
that's how it is, concerns about losing access to our assets if we die suddenly need to be prepared. That's why I always share with my wife and teach her how to earn money from cryptocurrency. I make a special note regarding the secret key to access all the wallets I hold, as well as my wife, so if something goes wrong then the asset is still safe and can be used.

This is a precaution that really must be prepared. In the past, there must have been a lot of people who didn't think that bitcoin would be this fantastic in price, that's why many lost access to their wallets because they stored keys carelessly, and look how many regret it.

It will depend on each individual. Sometimes, each will have its own strategy.
for me personally, I am a married man, and I let my couple know about this and whenenever I died, it will be managed by her.
And if we are two dead at the same time, hopefully, my children can learn about cryptocurrency someday, that is why telling them earlier is kinda good ways.
However, if we are all dead at the same time, the coins will be lost or if someone finds them someday, they will get them.

They will be lost forever and add decrease the number of coins in circulation, making bitcoin even more scarce and more valuable :D
Maybe my family eventually comes up with an idea o access my wallet. The password is going to be among my private things o hat if they are thorough enough they'll do it with ease.

Frankly I hope to be able to spend all my coins before I die so I don't think about other people accessing my coins when I'm dead.

I already wrote all of my wallet data in a book, I don't wrote too much just a few emails and passwords that I use in exchange site and wallet data. I hope my family can access my cryptocurrencies. I think it will be good to prevent my cryptocurrencies to be useless. Before this I only safe my data in a device, I am afraid if something happen to my device then I can't access my wallet, I think it is good for me too..

This is how i am thinking as well, i am healthy and i do not think i will be dying while holding a lot of coins. I do not have a next of kin to take care of the wealth but if that happens then i will think about it, but right now i am healthy but i do have a back up of all the wallets and the passwords and the private keys are stored in a separate locker.

I will give the key to my wife, therefore I want my wife to have the same hoby as me i.e. trade and also know more about cryptocurrency, so that if one day I die, I do not lose everything, whenever my wife can take my assets. for the future of her and our child

Good idea if you can bring your wife to this industry and she shows that same interest for sure

all your hard work will not be wasted in case time for you to go and live everything to your wife

your family will enjoy those invested money and have a better life after..

It is a must that we must have someone who knows what we're doing as well how to access our account or if we have will that can do to explain how to access it.  But it will be much better if we have someone who already into it and we trusted them to know our account since we don't if something happens so all our investments will still be accessible by the people matters to us than left it in our account till crypto gone which may not happen so soon.

The coins will be lost forever after you are gone from this planet and cannot be recovered by any hack and the supply of 21 million coins will be reduced by that much.Turn your Bitcoins into fiat and save them at some high price or the other way is to have trust on someone whom you love and is close to you and is not that much outspoken. You can give him the hold of your keys and seed phrase in an encrypted format and he can decrypt it at some point so that after you he can have the funds and enjoy his life.So it's better to share rather then wasting them and moving them out of circulation.

after our death maybe bitcoin will not be lost and we can still access it by giving a pin to our friends or family. because this business will still exist until we are no longer alive. maybe this is too much for us to discuss a post-mortem business. we still want our account to be as before then we have to give it to our relatives or familymaybe that is one of the right steps that we need to do for our account so that we can maximize it after our death

Uhm maybe the good idea for that bro is to write all your keys in a piece of paper and keep it in your wallet because surely when you die they will search for it especially if they all knew you were making money with bitcoin.. Or just make a note for them just incase what will happen. What i mean not your keys but a letter that will tell the direction where did you hide your keys so that they can access your bitcoin.. And it's up to you how to make it easier to find that note.. Because it's your family and you know more about them like how they really care on your stuff and etc.. So its all up to you where do you want to hide it.

The only thing that would happen if you die without any member of your family or even one of the closest person to you didn't access your wallet then your coin will vanished too. We all know already about it but what we don't know when is our call time. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the fruit of our hard work while we are breathing because we are all deserve to do it but we can't tell what would going to happen so in my case I am already wrote it in my data logs which as of now it is only me who knows about it but I am also starting to teach my younger brother about crypto.

Not every death is as a result of a sickness, and not every death leaves signs that it's about to come, more often than not, it's an unforeseen event, which in such case, if you haven't made any prior plan beforehand your coins could be unused (lost) forever. I think it's much better to create a backup plan regarding your assets when you're gone, most prolly integrating one or two of your family or closest person into what to do when you're no longer permanently around, if you're waiting till you fall sick before doing something, you'll prolly lose your funds in case something bad happens.

Honestly, at this point, I can't say where our crypto will be when we die. but I've tried several alternatives, namely:
entrust it to a friend who is my profession so that if in the future I did then he can manage my property and give it to my family (with a 50% risk of being stolen by him) I leave everything to his trust as long as he knows me.
and the second option is while I am still around then I will continue to teach my kids to get to know some crypto trading early on and he is now 17 years old I am sure he can manage my crypto legacy in the future.

because no one knows, so it's natural that no one knows your coin and it could really be lost if you die.
Me too, because I don't want the confidentiality of my wallet to be exposed by anyone and I don't tell anyone the key, including my family.
but i always make a small note on my laptop which contains all the keys from my wallet but just in case if i die my next of kin can still manage and atleast they continue what i am doing.
but whatever it is, wallet confidentiality is still the main thing, don't let many people know so that your coins are safe

Good to hear because every wallet has private access with keystore files, private keys, password and phases. So before my Death, I would give my password and phases to my relatives if they can restore my assets.

I do still have those kind of doubts on sharing out your keys and other those sensitive informations with your family members which i do fully understand.

On this case i do still teach them about the basic about crypto and how to make access on a certain wallet or even teach on how to convert those into
fiat and of course there would be some instructions inside on a sub drive on all the things they should know.

You do tell them that in case you die then thats the time they would open those drives or make some will that they would only have access once you die
and this would involved some legal actions.

This particular topic has been discussed here before and this is another format of it, shall base on your topics i will render my own opinion, base on the topic nothing positive will come's out after a departure of someone that owns the coin and also departure on Earth, the only way the coin can exist is a situation whereby the person's wife or husband have the Private key or seed phrase of the , diseased wallets ,but a  process whereby no one knows the seed phrase of the wallet the coin can't be fine or transact with, so further more it's good to have a document whereby all the private key of cryptocurrency wallet have to be store or been intact in paper or file to avoid lost of life and lost coins in the wallet.

Everything will gone with him/her after his/her death, if she/he doesn't arrange everything the ways he/she wanted.

Some possible ways to ensure that their families or love ones will get or inherit every cryptocurrencies she or he possesses.

First: Train someone from their member to have knowledge how cryptocurrency works, teach them to transact, like transfer, withdraw or purchase using cryptocurrencies.

Second: Leave a video or links, which they  can access after his/her death, of course, everything!

Third: Create cryptos wallet for  every families she/he have, transfer amount of according to his/her wish, and don't forget to give the access/seeds plus instruction.

No one knows when that time will come, what we all knew, death will come to us unexpectedly,

Worry no more, you'll just need to read these previous topics on how you can create a strategic plan after your death.

What happens to my bitcoin if I die today? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5284708.0)
Inheriting Bitcoin (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5194028.0)
Bitcoin Inheritance Planning (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5097720.0)
Thanks for this one, I'm a bit curious about this too although I have no use with it because I am pretty sure that I won't be needing to do this when the time comes, I just like to have a good read.
If you are really that selfish on not minding on sharing out or to be inherited with those coins that you had saved or accumulated then its your choice but its just a waste that those coins wont be used up by your loved ones or simply they would benefit out.

Aside in talks about circulation then its just really a waste that those coins would be ending up on lost totally in void.So its a matter of personal choice though because there are people who dont really mind about inheritance.

When it comes to my coins then i had already set out plans on that in case i do pass away.

As the world is progressing forward with the adoption of bitcoin we can expect some legit service renders who officially move all our holdings from our the one who have died to the person who he have proposed through documentation. This can be his children, close ones or a charity. This is the only way, other than providing private keys.

I think I have replied to a similar thread in the past but can't find it now to reference you there but nevertheless he's my thoughts on this issue. Teach your siblings or partner whatever you're into. This isn't just about cryptocurency but other financial investment like forex etc. Teach them how they can access your funds there just in case something like this happens.

We're told not to trust anybody but that's just to prevent us from going to trusting some random individuals. We're humans and trust is something we have to give atleast to one individual therefore if you have someone that you can trust like your lawyer or any other person, letting them have access to your investment vehicle is for situation like this, is very vital.

Like other's have said, it could be in a form of will or any other means. Don't forget that if you don't let them have access, you'll be putting them in an unfavorable situation as all you have worked for will be a waste since your love ones can't enjoy the fruit of your labor.

The coins will remain there forever unless the dying one gives you the “keys to the kingdom” before time runs out. In my mind when the time comes, whether if it’s all of a sudden like accident or a long-term illness (in which we could not avoid it when we’re getting old), I just simply put all of them in my notebook as a last resort since it’s not safe to put all of the private keys and seed phrases online.

I always copy the private key I have in my private notebook and tell my wife if it is any important records including the private key to access my crypto wallet.  why do I tell my wife, because we already trust each other, and I think this is very important to do because the closest person who is always there is only a partner, in case she has difficulty accessing it maybe my children will guide her later when they grow up.  I'm sure if everyone did the same then the valuable crypto assets that we have will not just disappear even though the main owner has passed away.

Operating crypto processes might be hard for starters. It would be better to share your knowledge with someone you trust and share your keys in a way you preferred. Privacy is needed; it would be risky if your inheritor asks others to help them access your crypto.

Yes, they will never be moved again. You could make a will or leave a letter somewhere with instructions how to locate the seed keys if you like. Do not use the word keys, what you handle is seed words not private keys, never directly manipulate those as they could be easily stolen.

The whole point of using seed phrases is that you can write them with your own hands into a piece of paper, this is VERY intentional. A real private key is simply too hard to copy by hand, the temptation to use copy/paste or any electronic medium (including qrcode) opens a door for thieves. So the point is when you make a new wallet, you are told to write by hand those seed words, this is the only thing you need to protect, and optionally leave to your family in case you pass away.

Nothing else is important. No hardware devices, no passwords, no phones, only the seed words, this is how important those are, do not neglect them as they are your wallet, protect them and do not let them be captured by electronic devices of any kind. Incidentally that is also a cold wallet if you delete it from your device, that piece of paper with words written by hand, is the real cold wallet, not unplugged $100 gadgets, those have another purpose: Secure your HOT wallet.

If you are a family man then you would definitely be trusting your wife but if not then you would be trusting your family but we know that not all people
would be having that kind of trust when it comes to money even if its close to you then you cant still 100% trust on it this is why majority would really
be losing on their holdings once they do die suddenly which is sad. Considering on how secure crypto is when it comes to key possession then theres no
way on accessing a wallet if those keys are lost and theres no much thing you can do about it but to move on.

I think this is no different from just giving them your private keys and password while alive and ask it to only be accessed when the person is gone, because if you can't trust them, a riddle won't make up the trust because even when alive they might try to also access the account and decipher the riddle.
There is no best death, but in this case it's best if the person has enough time to reveal it to their next of kin just before going, or just try building a trusted next of kin who values your life even more than any crypto-currency in any wallet.

A will where the person entitled would be able to get the piece of paper or ledger from a safe in an institutional establishment, much like a bank deposit box. Something like this could work, but of course, it would help if you tell somebody you trust where you keep your important files in case something like this happens. You can be over prepared but better that than underprepared

You don't want anyone to know your "passwords" or your "keys", then your coins "die" with you. I mean, they are lost forever unless someone somehow finds out the keys. If you would like to pass on your coins, then you will have to share it with someone. Maybe share it with someone that you trust a lot? They are just gone forever unless you give the necessary info to someone. Even if that someone is a family member, he/she should search for it. If they don't find it, then there's nothing else to do about it. Therefore, I think that it'd be good to leave it a legacy to someone you love the most at least.

You don't want anyone to know your "passwords" or your "keys", then your coins "die" with you. I mean, they are lost forever unless someone somehow finds out the keys. If you would like to pass on your coins, then you will have to share it with someone. Maybe share it with someone that you trust a lot? Make a plan on how to securely transfer your coins to other after your death.

There's no point if we can't inherit the coins we have after we die, so don't be selfish by not telling the people closest to us about the coins we have.
Because we are not going to live forever, someday we will also die, so it is wise if we prepare everything before we die. I agree the best and most
Bitcoin holders do is to tell the people we trust the most, about the Bitcoins we have and how to access them. Because it is a pity if we have been
collecting Bitcoin for a long time, it turns out that when we die no one can have it.

That's what we must do. A person that you're trusting and you've seen how both of you dealt with thick and thin moments. If it's not your lover then it's one of your family, next choice is a close relative and lastly someone who your really trust and had with a long or short friendship but did a lot to you.

This could work perfectly. Recently my uncle died and he hasn't mentioned any nominee for his bank deposit. So, to claim the fund we had to follow a series of steps provided by the government. Finally we got the find transferred to my aunt's bank account. This is possible when it comes to centralized services.

With bitcoin too this can be made possible, because to claim the fund of a person the sole right is for his wife/husband and then comes the children. I'm stating this when the person hasn't mentioned anyone is specific as nominee for his holdings.

I'd really like another way to recover the coins. It leaves people no choice than sharing the details with someone if youdon't want your coins to vanish for good. This situation is something which is annoying me. But for now, we have no other choice.

If you did not tell your family or friends your private key and wallet before your death, there is a high probability that these coins will become dead. I suggest that you can tell someone you trust in advance to manage your wallet after your death , And then entrust all of this to the custodian to open these private key envelopes after you die.

If no one has an access in your wallets aside from you then it will stay there forever. Your family cant enjoy what you have left because you're the only one who knows the keys in order to unlock it. Thus if you dont want this to happen, think whom you would like to entrust your crypto just incase.

Worry no more, you'll just need to read these previous topics on how you can create a strategic plan after your death.

This is bound to happen if they don't give the key to the bitcoin wallet to someone or their family. The bitcoins they have will be lost when they experience sudden death so that they do not have time to inherit their bitcoins to the people they trust to hold the bitcoins.
I myself have given the key to my bitcoin wallet to my wife because I am afraid that my bitcoins will be lost if I die.

It truth we have see and heard about the situation whereby a cryptocurrency investor died and his/her crypto holding was not obtainable by her family which could be a lesson for us all but my own idea about my main holding is saving my hardware wallet with private information in safety deposit box which will obtain by my family after I'm late.
Meanwhile, transaction wallet can only be access by myself so the coin there will be lost forever.

It’s definitely up to me to decide 100%. I set up a trust and placed a sealed envelope in my lawyer’s safe for delivery to my heirs. My family knows this and knows what to do when I pass. Many people think this is stupid trusting a lawyer, and this response is likely to be rejected. I believe this is a reasonable way to protect my Bitcoin, and I am happy that someone manages my affairs when I can’t.

Put in on the will and have your crypto split into equal in parallel to how many people you want to give your crypto in the unfortunate case of your death. Hire a lawyer and have the necessary information written on paper and put into an envelope and entrust it to your lawyer. To everyone who thinks it's crazy, entrusting it to some other person, lawyers especially the high profile ones have a really big reputation to uphold for them to stoop so low like stealing the bitcoin.

My simple solution is to just save all your crypto data on a flash disk and give a will to your wife if you die later, but before that you must teach your wife or someone you trust in your will about crypto,

Talking about our own mortality makes us stronger so I don't really mind the topic because death is inevitable so why worry about it, just do what you love without harming anyone while you are still alive. For me, I would just probably sell all the bitcoins and cryptocurrencies that I have whenever I feel like deaths coming to me and I will just probably do the inheritance in fiat so no hassles.

One thing I like to do is set up a multi-sig wallet from bitaddress.org. Very trusted site. Turn off the internet before you create a wallet though.

You can set it up to where you have any number of signers for the coins. So for example, if you decide you trust 3 people to have signatures for the address, choose to make it so 2 of them have to provide keys to unlock the bitcoin.

Of course, you have to trust the people that have keys, but usually this works well with a spouse or trusted family members etc.

Very safe in my opinion. And you can use as many signers that you want. You could say 5 of 9 signers have to simultaneously agree to release the coins as well. There is no limit, I don't think. I think you can even do only 3 of the 9 have to sign.

If you do not want to give your seed words or your private keys to your family members then there are several ways in which you could deal with this, one is to simply give this information on your will so when you die they have access to your coins, another option is to tell them where the keys are stored and only give them the access to those coins once you die by using your lawyer, and yet another option that exists is that you can use time locked transactions to inherit your coins that way.

^ If no one will access your private key your coins will be lost forever and based on what I have read on the prediction BTC article. Lost BTC has been increased year by year and it will affect upon redusing the entire market circulation. If no one will inherit your coins that will possibly happen to your coin when you died, it becomes useless at all. That is why from the start let your family member oriented basic information of BTC and how it work so that they will have an idea about this.

After death, if the owner or the user himself failed to give his relatives or the most trusted person he would dare to give access into his accounts, then there is no solution on how someone can ever make handle with his Bitcoin that is left behind his accounts and that will just remain as his untouched assets stored inside his wallet. There are lots of reasons why a certain person will not dare to share his seed phrase and password into someone even to his family but if you will just put it into such scenario, all of your earnings will be useless if no one can be able to make use and experience the benefits of obtaining your Bitcoin. You may at least have one person to know it before it's too late.

In case a coin owner passes on without passing on the private key, his beneficiaries may find his wallet as it were to realize that they will never pick up get to to the riches interior. To avoid this, the owner essentially must guarantee that somebody gets a duplicate of the private key by composing it down, putting away it on a streak memory drive, or entrusting it with a commercial benefit that oversees them.

If the owner of the account or wallet get lost or died, the wallet will remains as long as the private key of that account or wallet doesn't passed over their families or friends. The funds and the assets that has been stored in the account will remain the same and nothing will change but if the wallet phrase or private key has been said to a family or loved ones then they will be able to access and use the assets inside the account. That's just the simple logic behind that.

For most cryptocurrency holders, it is a common concern to wonder what will happen to the cryptocurrencies stored with him in his sudden death. In this case, it can be said that there is no time for the deceased to worry about the wealth of the world. But if you are worried about your loved ones, then you must trust one of them. Get someone to experience this and give them an idea of how they or they might get it after your death. Since death is always uncertain, be aware of this and take appropriate action at the present time.

If this is the case op, then along with the dead person, the coins will also be die and lost forever.
The better thing you can do to tackle this thing is that, someone you trust, you love or with whom you have blood relationships and who understands your mentality, tell him/her how to access the Coins.
This is the best possible way to prevent the coin from remaining lost forever.
Hope this helps you Op to contribute on this discussion.

So I guess, the only way to make a crypto to be accessible to your loved ones, is to make these crypto into tangible things like money and gold and valuable items. If you think about it, protecting your crypto assets until kingdom come might be a little selfish, I mean as far as I am concerned, I want my family to have access to my money if I am already weak and old and struggling with my health. If I can afford an attorney then we can talk legalese in order to prepare the eventuality of my demise.

When someone dies their coins are gone as well. And I know for sure that a lot of people worry about giving their keys to their family while they are still alive, maybe to one reason or the other , they feel they can’t trust them so it’s best that they keep it to themselves. I wouldn’t blame such people, that’s why it is very important to develop trust in a every family, so that if anything happens, there will always be people takes over. Maybe you can use your lawyer, and he or she will be the one to handle such information and keep it ,so that if anything happens ,then they will bring it out.

Although I wont say you can trust your lawyer hundred percent. It’s best to work hard now and provide for your family so they wouldn’t have the need to be looking for your bitcoins, rather they will have enough to invest their own. Or you can even make use of online wallets and use email to lock it, so when they gain access to your email, they can as well access your wallets.

Making some will is ideal too but be sure that those storage device wont really be accessed and this is why you should really prepared and at least be readying because we dont know on what tomorrow holds.

When those wallets havent known its seeds then those coins are lost forever and it would just be such a waste.Yes, we are not selfish when it comes to our holdings and converting into those tangible things like gold

is something need some effort for you to do so and of course when it becomes inherited then those would really end up on what you do planned on the first place.

There are ways you can give the private keys to your family members, get a private bank locker store all the keys in the wallet, make the person as your nominee and inform him that and you can print out a tutorial  about the coins you are holding in case of emergency and people can understand what cryptocurrency is in 2021 and your family members will be getting the coins you left.

The difference is that, Bitcoin is a deflationary currency and with time the price keeps on increasing and the earlier you invest the better profit you are going to make rather than wait for years so that your family will make money and invest in them 10 years old the line  :D.

That is an option but only if our death comes in a predictable manner after a long disease or because we are too old, but as we know people die for all kind of reasons at all ages, this is why some other method needs to be used to guarantee that our loved ones are going to receive our coins in the case of an early demise, time locked transactions could be the answer to what we want as this allows us to keep control of our coins and at the same time leave a way to our family members to get those coins at some point in the future.

If I die, I have a few options to deal with my coins, find a lawyer, write a will, if I have only one child, I will tell him my password directly, if I don’t have children, I will donate to the orphanage , If I have many children, I will distribute them equally. If my children don’t know how to be filial and don’t do their jobs properly, I will donate all my bitcoins to public welfare. In fact, I still have a rather absurd idea to test humanity. I might really choose to feign death, direct a funeral for myself, and see what my family and friends look like after my death, and then make a decision.

I personally have my own way and I have provided a private box and only I know where to store the key to the box, because there are some valuables besides my private key and wallet password to be able to access it, and also how to use it in great detail.
and I put the box in a safe place and only my wife or family members know but can't open it, and if anything happens to me including the death of my wife or family member I will definitely try to force open the box and read the letter I prepared beforehand, and they can use it because I have detailed it in the mail to be able to access it and some links to get to know it to better understand it.

Personally I'll choose to allow my wife to know everything about my crypto belonging,

The big issue here is what if the people you want to leave your coins to are not tech savy?  Say you leave them your seed and tell them that is your seed for your hardware wallet.  I mean even if they have your seed and or ledger/trezor device, if they are not tech savy, how would they go about claiming it?

Are there services that assist people who have crypto seed to help them claim their coins and say help them send the coins to that person's coinbase account and they then take a percentage for helping?  Like a flat amount or percent of the crypto in their account?  Obviously anyone that is familiar with crypto and hardware wallet could easily help someone claim someone's coins with the seed.

You must involve someone from a family member that you really trust and it is impossible for a brother or sister to betray your trust, if you have a wife then it is better to teach knowledge about how to access bitcoin assets even if it is not yet time for you to provide the seed of ultimate balance but at least it will help your family if you died.

You do told them about on how to access funds on a wallet but you should at least do make some will in case you die on where they are the only ones who could access those files and wallets

which would be a good preparation because we dont know on what comes next and since we cant predict on when we would die then its just good to consider on having these kind of back up plans

rather than making those coins would be put up to waste if you dont intend to share it up on your loved ones. Death is inevitable and this is why its better to trust up one of the family
which be most likely to be your wife.

In the context that you have carefully removed all other options for sake of security and caution, the only one I can suggest to you is for you to move your cryptos to a well secured top exchange and keep. Binance comes to mind at the moment. That way, all you need to reveal will be the password to the exchange. You don't need private keys here and there which may even be very difficult for none crypto savy person to locate and piece together. Write your password on a piece of paper and tug somewhere safe. At one's (your) demise that can easily be found.

yes that's a good idea but for me because i dont trust anyone even my family.  ;D maybe i will prefer to write a letter, which information how to manage my keys in order for them to have an access. and i will keep it to my wallet or along with my personal documents because for sure they will search for something in it, especially if they knew that you're making money in bitcoin and you always spend your whole day working in a computer surely there will be a searching operation. If you don't tell about your passphrase to anyone, then your coins will be lost once you die. Since in traditional fiat, money is automatically moved to the generations once you die, in bitcoin the situation is different. You bitcoins will be lost and not be transferred to your siblings or kids unless to tell them your private key while you are alive.

You clearly stated what you need to know , Let your family knows about your Wallets and besides your most concern here is them so why not let them learn about your holding?

Or else you will Put all your wallet details in your Last Will And testament so when time comes that you die then they will benefits in all your hard work here in crypto.

As for the last will, what if the attorney won't show anything to them? and he's also a crypto guy and he can easily do that? It just so happen that it came to my mind.
What if this scenario also happens even if you've made already a last will for them that's being held by the attorney.

Make sure that death can happen any moment, that's why if you have a lot of coins worth tons of money you MUST NOT ever lose your private key and keep them safe with a trusted entity . It makes it very impossible to retrieve access to your funds if your private keys are missing. You really don’t want to run the risk. Make sure you store it in a safe place - or, better yet, get a hardware wallet.

Interesting idea, leaving a letter in the wallet in the form of a toturial to access the seed of the bitcoin asset but how to make sure if the first person to open the letter is one of your family, but this method still has many shortcomings. I think you have to be honest with one of the family members to access the seed file on the flashdisk as a will when you die.

You should at least share off and let them have it after you die because losing it entirely and been lost on void isnt really that worth and after all the struggles you've been with crypto investment then it do just sucks big time when those coins would really be just put up to waste or simply cant really be benefited out by your loved ones.

I cant really blame out some people on not to be paranoid because its really hard to trust up nowadays even with your loved ones or siblings or even on your wife when it comes to money. You wouldnt know on when
they would be accessing it without you knowing specially if you do already shared up the keys.

Making up some arrangement like having a will in case you die then they would be getting all of those things inserted with some instructions on how to access.

Because you keep millions of dollars in your wallet, your will may be silenced by the attorney so that the will is not given to your family or he only gives half of the will. I think the best way is to get your family involved to find out what you have in crypto assets.

I think you should immediately be honest with your family because all this time you have been taking the wrong steps. Just imagine that all this time you have worked hard and got results but you have not notified your family if you died and your property there cannot be enjoyed by the family. I don't do anything like that. being honest with family is better than hiding it.

If your tokens are stored in your wallet, perhaps your closest person will not know your key. When a person dies, there is a high probability that the tokens in the wallet will disappear forever, which is equivalent to being destroyed, So that the price of the currency can be increased even higher, but if you tell the closest people the key, they may sell a large amount of bitcoin after you die, which violates the consensus and characteristics of long-term bitcoin holding.

This is not as uncommon as you may think, years ago the bias against bitcoin was still very strong so people decided to not tell their family members they had some coins, now just a few years later the negative attitude against bitcoin is going down a little bit so maybe this is the perfect opportunity to tell your family members that you have some bitcoin and give them a chance to recover your coins in the case something happened to you, however I will not recommend telling people how much you actually have as most people do not know how to remain silent and this could come to haunt you in the future if the wrong people learn about this information.

Another aspect of blockchain technology is that every holdings and transaction is only between you and the system and if someday the holders die and gone away no family members can inherit and our assets and holding will remain forever untoched in blockchain as there is no central control for this. The best thing to do if we have assets in crypto is to educate our closest how to use and gave them everything access for them to use.

As far as I know, all of your coins are gone forever if you die and didn't share the info of your wallet(s) with anyone. Because there's no other way to recover this information about wallets. It's logic is similar to the transactions we make. For example, if we send our coins to a wrong address, then they will be gone forever also.

but why i cant really just trust up that much? Im just still hesitating on sharing up everything about on how much i do hold or maybe im just afraid

Well, if you do trust up your wife then you would definitely be sharing it but if not then its better not to tell at all but of course once you die then those coins will be

If you are not really comfortable telling your closest family member or friend your password to your cryptocurrency accounts, there's no way they can access it the moment you die. They'll be no other possible option if you'll just keep your password to yourself. I understand the people who do not tell their passwords to anyone. It's just really a matter of keeping your funds, assets, and portfolios safe from unwanted withdrawal and theft. Because we can't really tell who's the trustworthy one unless we try it ourselves. Although, a lot of people don't want to risk trying it given the large chance of regretting later on.

If you are very uncomfortable with telling your passwords outright, you can try making some sort of riddle that your loved ones can solve if ever your unprecedented death happens. You can also write a last will and testament that has all the lists of your assets and the password for it with the instructions on when and whom to give it. Then, entrust it with a lawyer or put it in a safety vault.

You do not really have an idea of how lucky you are, I have tried to get my family members to adopt bitcoin in the past and no one did, obviously they lament not doing so but now they think it is too expensive, so the fact that you can share your keys with your sister and that she can do the same with you gives you a lot of flexibility that many users do not have and instead we have to deal with complicated measures to try to give our coins to our family members but without them getting to those coins before it is the right time.

I'm going to withdraw all my assets, when my son, wife, or I are sick, I think having assets for too long is also not good, because whenever human creation is going extinct, we just need anything enough for us, not to be overdone, I've also heard a billionaire lose his assets in cryptocurrency before he bequeaths it to his family.

I don't think the real problem is if you get sick and you can still think and act. The real problem is if you die in a car accident and even got you desktop locked with a password and your family may know you got crypto, but they have no clue how anything works. Most likely they will never be able to access it without undergoing the risk to getting it stolen. They could ask specialists to hack the desktop password, but that specialist might also be able to steal private keys and delete files.

That was a good decision to make, because we don't know what the future holds for us. Another thing important is giving your private keys to a well trusted person, someone who understands Cryptocurrencies and how it works. I think is important we tell our family members the details of our Wallet(s), so, our coins won't be gone forever, if something bad happens. Because, is impossible for someone to have access to your wallet without the private keys.

I don't think I'm bequeathing it to my family, but I'm also not putting all my assets in cryptocurrency, and I'm still putting fiat first in this, that's so it's not hard for me not to, for my son and wife to receive an inheritance.

If I did not tell my family my love of my passwords, if I die, my coins will be lost. The money I invested is equivalent to doing charity, but I have already told me my password My family, because they are also crypto enthusiasts, I have invested a lot of money in the crypto market and I don’t want to lose them, and my money is reserved for my children. After all, people can’t take money with them when they die.

Indeed a good decision, whatever happen to you the assets that you have will continue to exist.

We have to deal with realities that no one knows how long we will continue to live, death is just there awaiting and in any moment it
will come and take us with it, moving back to the topic, without those private keys and knowledge to the person who you entrust the
information, those coins will be unuseful and no one will able to use it anymore.

There is one big problem with giving your private keys to seemingly trusted people: imagine you get hacked and that hacker moves the coins, how are you going to go about it with your sister (in this case sister)? It will always have a bad taste if someone holds your private keys, the coins get moved and you actually got hacked. That's why we definitely need a blockchain based custodian system with time locks.

true for our families like children and wives, we must know the assets that we have, otherwise all of our assets will die with us, later the assets that we store in our wallets become inheritance for our children with the condition that the key must be given to our wife or someone who can we believe.

that's the risk of owning crypto. if we die the coin will die, but if we share our wallet with people around it will definitely be misused.
so maybe we have to have 1 trusted person from our family member to be able to access our wallet maybe our child or wife
Actually that is not a risk but a Security advantage , imagine if the bank will held your funds and you died without your family knowing the funds? it will be their money in time.

so with bitcoin no one will benefits unless it is our willingness to let them have.

that is our obligation , either let them learn our funds and have access or die the coins with us.

this business will still exist and have absolutely no effect on our death, if this is indeed the case we will certainly give our account to the closest people we can trust and it is very important why we have to choose certain people in this case, because if he can continue what we have built so far, maybe he can inherit what we have for the future after our death in the future

The best solution is to give the key to someone we trust, for example a wife, as long as she is a wife then there is no secret, so if we die then she can use bitcoin to meet the needs of children and families.

So before we die we should give inheritance to our families.  if our assets no one knows then these assets will be stored forever.  I'm sure there are lots of incidents like this, but don't let us be like them.

I don't know where you are from, but rest assured if you live in a half normal country and you hold money with a bank, your family will also receive that money if you die. You are rather talking about highly corrupt countries I guess. We do for sure need better software solutions for the inheritance of digital assets, there is no doubt about that.

This will work but only if you die of old age or at least have a decent idea that something could happen to you at any moment, but as we know many people die suddenly in which case your coins will be lost, this is a great problem and one that it does not have an easy solution but that we must think about otherwise we may face that scenario in which our coins are lost because we never told anyone about our seed words or private keys and what to do to recover those coins.

We don't know when death will come to us but we also don't trust notaries without informing the family about the amount of crypto assets that have been stored in the exchange account, a very confusing situation but we have to act before it's too late.

Good plan brother! We should really be prepared because our lives is really unpredictable on when we would die and its just normal that we  should secure out our coins
not only  for the sake  of our own future but also into our loved ones. One of the considerations you should mind of is on how to back up your private keys which
you  should really ensure that  incase you die there would be someone do able to access it out, neither your own family or your  loved ones  that had been left.
Its just a waste  that no one would really benefit of all the things you do  hard work for.

Don't share your private key with anyone. However, depending on the kind of family that you have, you and your family can be one. You can be so united that y'all trust yourselves. But if your case is not so, you can leave them a clue based on their intellegience. You can store your keys in a secret place but not too tough for family. What if you store it in a device that only your family member's fingerprint can open but you won't let them have access to the device. Or what if you split each key between different courts, instructing them to give it out on confirmation of owner's death?

I don't want to die fast, because I still have a lot to dream about. Some of the steps I have taken have been to tell my wife that I have Bitcoin and some crypto and it could be money. Besides that I have also taught how to access it. But now I have saved some passwords and privatkeys in an article that will be useful, especially for my little family.
This had to be done because I realized I did not know when I would die. This is all I do for my family (wife and children) so I believe what I did to tell Wife is the most correct solution at this time.

Yes, you are absolutely right, that's what I did first. I've been telling my family, especially my wife, about the security lock for my account. So that if one day it happens against my will, my wife will easily access it. Why don't we want to share it with our wives?! Because my goal is to work for their welfare.

Agreed, keep your time towards a happy and strong relationship first so you have someone to lean on in those situations. Yes, you have relatives, but if you're starting a family, be sure she'll be the one to stay by you until the end, and that you can trust him with such valuables. Make sure that everything is in order because we never know when we may die, and if no one has access to our wallets, it will be difficult to recover them, and if we can't, those cryptos will be lost forever. So everything on me is perfect right now because I want someone to benefit from it if incase I die, but my family comes first.

When you inherit your crypto, it's treated as property and is generally taxed like other asset. It's subject to capital gains taxed on any gain from the date of death.

Ughh, that must be a very good friend then! ;) I am not sure if I would ever share my private keys with a friend to be honest, unless I really have nobody else to share it with. A friend is dangerous. If crypto goes missing from one of your wallets it is definitely going to end badly for your relationship even though he might not be to blame.

I told my brother about my cryptocurrencies Investment and I also gave him my private keys. It important you tell someone about it, not just anyone, but someone you trust. Because it you don't, and eventually something happens to you, they won't have access to your Bitcoin. And it will be useless. However, you have to tell someone who can manage and secure your bitcoin, someone who knows about Cryptocurrency and how it works.

True that. I believe that your wife should be your trusted ally and should naturally know just about everything in a healthy relationship that is. It makes no sense if we are doing all this investment without having a trusted person in our life that can make use of them in the event death happens. You can teach your wife or whoever everything they need to know about accessing your crypto assets and set up the Dead Mans Wallet thing, I believe I have read that somewhere where your log in Info will be sent to that person after some time you have set up in the event of death so that they can have access to them.

In my family nobody understand what is bitcoin, what is private keys and things like that so in that case we should try to move our funds into centralized exchange and we should add nominee there and I know there are some exchange which don't provide service like this but exchange should think about it.

If you don't give someone access to a platform like crypto no one will be able to find them after death. That's why we should teach someone close to us about crypto and share personal information with them then after death he will be able to re circulate the coins the trustworthy person of the family has to teach everything in advance. Also those who have no idea about crypto can convert to fiat by doing this they will be able to transact easily the coins will not go bankrupt.

That is awesome and I see it the exact same way. There is no perfect and ideal world where you can trust someone 105%. Even a marriage can fail at some point, but that doesn't mean distrust is the necessary outcome of course. We will always need someone whom we trust no matter what, that is just how life goes. Trusting the mother of your kids is probably the safest bet, at least in many cases. ;) All the best!

Mehn, I cannot trust these USB devices. I have seen flashdrives (pendrives) have errors and the owner looses vital information. In a case like money, I don't think USB devices is a good way to store your keys. Ever wondered about it having some virus and getting corrupted? Even if they say it is virus-free, mehn, we are talking about money here; one must be careful to avoid permanent loss of funds.

I have not thought about it, as far as I know there are already USB devices that can only be opened with your fingerprint, so if the USB encrypts all the information that goes inside then you can set it so it only opens with the fingerprint of the one you want to leave your coins but you do not give them access to it until you pass away, this is not a bad way to inherit your coins and I am going to look into it a little bit more to see if it is a viable strategy.

I came to the same conclusion of my own, after all storing something long term in an USB is simply not a good idea, I have had USBs that died on me from one day to the other for no reason at all which means that it is not really a reliable way to store your coins and hope that they are there for long enough for the person that you want that it gets your coins to actually do so, I suppose that I still need to study the subject and see if there is a more viable solution.

Storing important files in hardware such as USB then the item can die or be lost, another disadvantage if you don't tell someone then no one will know the use of the file. I don't think there is any other solution other than informing siblings and teaching some wallet access knowledge or getting them involved in crypto.

As far as I know, there is no way to recover the lost private key etc.. It doesn't work like you click "I forgot my password." and bingo! So, you should keep your private information somewhere safe and inform the people you trust about it. Otherwise, there will be nobody who knows about it when you die and your coins will be gone forever I'm afraid. I know this is unfair but for now, we have nothing to do about it except this.

No one can say when people will die, but death is inevitable. No matter how much you save in cryptocurrency, one day you will have to leave it.I will write down all my passwords and important documents in a notebook and leave it with my daughter. The girl has already shown me all my passwords and important phrases. Will be able to use them after my death.

I put on my back up everything now into 4-5 flash drives in case there are some problem with it because we know sometimes it can be broken or unreadable and i save it in my room. Maybe if i dead, my parents can use it to access my wallet/exchanges which i save my money (hope so) and can retrieve my money. It happens once to my friend, gladly she shared his account to friend that she believe and they can give her parents money that she saved in Poloniex.

I personally make a box containing the keywords of all the wallets that I use. And I told my family the box could be opened if I was gone from them forever. And I assume when the time comes they won't understand how to use it either, but I've made a message to where they ask and find out everything, I'm giving this forum link and hopefully when the time comes all my legacy in the wallet can be inherited safely without the intervention of others.

This is a great way to pass down our digital treasure to family members. Giving that message will of course be safer and all the achievements we have achieved will be more useful for our families when we die.
I'm thinking about this, but haven't started to take action on it yet.

This is a good idea, keep everything in a box, we have to make sure that the box is safe from damage or theft, the next step is to tell about crypto. Sometimes it is not easy to tell details about crypto to the family, the easiest way is to convey that crypto is the same as stocks and can be sold, then they will easily understand.

Agree. He has a brilliant idea . I would try to do this also though i am still young but we really dont know when our death arrives so we should be ready. It good to save all the private key or phrases in paper then store it in box or anything, informed you family about it then it is not necessary to teach them crypto they will know it later on and discover how to open your wallets.

When i first learn and invested in crypto  , i tend to keep this as secret to my wife and family , i don't even tell stories to my friend because those days in my country this was being talked as scam or some sort of that.

but eventually when my investment grows and my activities here comes long and longer? i realized that what is the purpose of this if one day i died surprisingly ? so i start sharing to my wife and now , she already has access to all my accounts so whatever happened we are ready and they will benefits from all my funds.

In this situation you will lose your bitcoin forever, it is locked.  we saw these problems when John died physically in prison, his wife couldn't use the options to open the wallet.  Bitcoin and crypto do not have proof of inheritance.  It is also a risk that you must build to avoid these situations.

Your coins stored in your wallet after your death become useless and each of us should make one of his trusted family members know the private keys to the wallets and if this trusted person has no knowledge of the use of cryptocurrencies, we must teach him everything that should be done if the owner of the wallets has any accident so that he can get the money.

One thing is for sure, they will be in the blockchain forever and will be seen by everything. So as long as the Internet exists, you will also be able to use the coins, as long as you are well organized. After my death, i should have a person there i trust „referably even during life“. That way nothing gets lost.

Depends on what measures you've put in place when you were still alive, if you don't have anything then that bitcoin is already a lost coin that will again contribute to the permanent increase of price of bitcoin, you really don't have to plan about it ahead of time, it just makes you anxious that your death could happen any day.
No body is planning for death, everybody wants to live till their old age Buh things happen so quickly, it's really so bad how many crypto enthusiast saves their lifes fortune in crypto and when there are no more all those possession will be a waste, the plan had always been to make an impact, when we are no more our loves one's should benefit from our good works instead of it being a full waste because no one could have access to it.

Do it because we don't know until when we're going to stay.

Just teach her how to import keys and how to download wallets that are official. Remind her that there are fake wallets that will sweep your wallet's balance if you enter your private keys there.

These assets are really going to be a big deal to them in the future.

I already attended to this in my initial reply to this topic. You can have two courts hold different halves of the private key and have them release it upon death confirmation. Though no one prays for death, this is a smart thing to do already.

When death occurs, all assets owned will be abandoned as well and we need a replacement to be able to manage the assets we have. Therefore, personally, I am currently starting to introduce the crypto world to those closest to me so that if this happens there will be a substitute to be able to handle it. Whether it will work or not at least I have passed on what I have. Therefore from now on we have to really manage it well so that we can also get good results and we just have to reap the results later.

if death comes and your assets are in crypto only you know then all your assets also die meaning they can't be taken by others, death will definitely come then it's better to tell the key to people you can trust such as family, children or wife so that our hard work is not in vain.

But you still can't get around forwarding the keys to your family in a secure way. You can't even put those down in your last will and leave it with a notary obviously. That is the biggest issue. Where to put the keys such that access is guaranteed for the family without making it easy for others to access it without authorization. Not the easiest problem to solve and unless you don't trade at all, an update once in a year also sounds insufficient.

It's a good idea to give all bitcoin data to our child, this will certainly make him feel the benefits of the work and investment that we do, to take care of other things of course we don't rely on providing data to at least 3 trusted people.

This is crypto and not the bank where you can provide them the Will on whom the coins should be distributed in case of the onwer death. It's you who have to decide this in your life and share your keys with your near and dear ones. If you delayed, you may die and the coins never go to anyone and technically become useless.

I am a crypto investors and also altcoin holder and i never want to share my personal data with my friend or with other member, becouse it maybe dangers for my fund. But as my opinion we can share our crypto data with our most trusted family member, for example, if you are a marred person, then you can share it with your Wife or Son/doughter and if you are a unmarried then you can share it with your other trusted family member. Also we can backup our all data on a Diary.

It is actually a shame that by now there isn't a well known and strong solution to store your keys on the blockchain in a vault such that if you don't interact with the vault according to predefined parameters, the keys get released to a certain email-address or whatever you defined as the receiving endpoint. That should definitely be doable for decent developers.

We all know that which is why we want to find ways to share our coins with our families, but the problem is that with the nature of cryptocurrencies you can lose your coins if one of those family members decide that they want to take the coins prematurely, after all we know that the person that owns the private keys is the owner of those coins so by revealing that information to them you are already giving them the right to move your coins in whatever way they want, so it is a difficult problem to solve and so far there is not an easy solution for it.

Title: Re: What happens to the coins after your death ?

this is not an interesting thing for us to discuss because this is very much related to the future to come, because death cannot be separated by anything, but we have people closest to us that we can use to continue or give what we have been so far.so that they are free to choose or sell what we have pioneered or continue what we have been doing if they do not intend to continue what we have achieved so far.

I think this is very important we discuss, giving the private key must be done immediately because whenever we can die, bitcoin is an asset that may be very expensive after we die so that it makes our loved ones get great benefits and they become successful people.
This must be done, make a letter of inheritance. Because by giving our account key, who knows the coins that we have produced so far are very useful for our family, class, education of our children. So don't be stingy about sharing your password with your wife or family.

As far as I know, our coins are just gone if they didn't share the private information with anyone before we die. Because there is no other way to recover the necessary information that is needed to access a wallet. I know that it is frustrating but we must keep the wallet information somewhere safe and easy to remember.

It is true. If you don't share the private keys, all the coins will be gone since no one can access them. That's why it is very important to share your private keys with someone else, suggested to the nearby person (a family member). We must know if we won't live forever, there should be the end of this life. So, to prepare it is a must, the coins can be useful for our lovely people at least. It is very unfortunate if they are gone or stuck in the wallets.

While holding we give maximum importance to the security of the wallet. We use different forms of security enabled to keep our holdings safe. Same as this it is more important to have our private keys shared to someone close or with our family, because we don't know the truth about life. The private keys need to be shared in such a way, it can be used only after his/her death. This is possible through some bank/private vault services.

Everyone is trying so hard to make that this asset like the crypto is well safe from hackers or family manipulators who can switch on ones weakness to destroy the long awaited reward of holding a crypto. This is why many crypto holders and investors will keep be hiding their secret keys from anyone and when they die, everything will be lost without trace by the family members or close relatives.

Is it cheap to rent out spaces where you can store notebooks with passwords on it. I don't even think these kinds of establishments exist. Put everything in a notebook and then just leave it in a pile of your personal documents, waiting for them to see once you are gone. I think that is they only way. Specify that it is cryptocurrency so they should find someone with the knowhow and retrieve those coins.

I think that is one of the best ways to go about it. I do understand that some people are uneasy about giving out this kind of information thinking that some family members might even turn against them because of what they believe they can get from it but somehow there must be a trusted person in your life that you can share such information with.

Is it cheap to rent out spaces where you can store notebooks with passwords on it. I don't even think these kinds of establishments exist. Put everything in a notebook and then just leave it in a pile of your personal documents, waiting for them to see once you are gone. I think that is they only way. Specify that it is cryptocurrency so they should find someone with the know-how and retrieve those coins.
I think that is one of the best ways to go about it. I do understand that some people are uneasy about giving out this kind of information thinking that some family members might even turn against them because of what they believe they can get from it but somehow there must be a trusted person in your life that you can share such information with.

I really don't think that family members might turn against each other when it comes to digital assets ( I am not sure about that though since in my experience families get to arguments sometimes when it comes to matters concerning plots of land or inheritance). But my idea where all of your passwords, passcodes, seed phrases, wallet addresses are inputted inside a  notebook and then just leave that notebook inside your personal documents stash and then kept in a "chest" to be stored for a long time. For me that is really the best way for you to ensure that your digital wealth can be passed on to whoever has possession of the notebook.

Now I don’t have neither a spouse nor children, but when I get married and have children, I will make them learn all the seed phrases and passwords, and I will leave them my cold wallets and all accounts, of course. I suppose that my children will be familiar with Bitcoin, blockchain technologies and all innovations, so they will know what to do with this digital heritage.
What about when this happens when the person doesn't have a spouse and children as you just mentioned, does that mean that they should not share with any other family outside their spouse and children? In the end, it still comes down to whether you see anyone around you as a trusted person that you can share such kind of information with, if not, it will all still go to waist.

I'm sure everyone has a trusted person, maybe even an outsider, not from family like close friends, even they can be trusted more like family, so those who have to be trusted don't have to be family.

I would be very careful with anyone and in a best case scenario it is a friend who in relation to your crypto wealth earns enough wealth himself or herself to not be tempted to ultimately betray you. If your best friend is known to be in (financial) trouble, with all due respect it might still not be the perfect decision to entrust him with keys to your cryptocurrency wealth.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. Even brothers, sisters, and wives can do things you won't expect they would. If you are healthy or do not expect to die sooner like you have plenty of enemies trying to get you just keep your private keys and seed with you. Because of the nature of cryptocurrency, if one doesn't make proper plans as one does for his assets after death, it may either be lost permanently or squandered.

It may be lost in the sense that if his passwords and keys are not properly documented and kept safely, nobody will be able to gain access in the sad case or scenerio of death.

It may be squandered and sold off quickly also if it was documented and passed on to someone who has little knowledge of the importance and future of cryptocurrency and is just shortsighted.

That is why inheritance should be considered as early as possible by those who own large amount of crypto asset such as bitcoin. The investor in crypto will probably care so much about the asset they own that it's possible for them to think about where their asset should go after their death. If they do not have a private key that has been secured and handed over to a trusted party, chance are that the heirs will not be able to be used by their heirs. That is, when the heirs do not have the private key then the asset is not for them and the worst thing is that the asset will be lost forever from circulation.

Unless its an accident of a sudden death, your coins could probably be dead also. For me, if I can feel death for is near, I would really make a personal letter in email containing my keys and send it to my beloved ones with a note in every address. A plan should be established before your death and give all your wealth. You can't bring those wealth so give it to people you care the most.

it has become a certainty-the crypto that is owned is useless-for that from an early age people who are involved in the crypto world, should teach the family-that's important.

Crypto-assets-so the family deserves to know.

Unless the access to where its stored is not given to any, it would lost. I would prefer to give the access to my spouse. I am training her on it though. But to those who do not trust anyone else, can write their wills to any trusts, orphanages, homeless people and etc. If this is not done so, the coin remain stable somewhere, where none can access and it would become useless.

When you die your coins die with you unless you set up some kind of system that transfers your coins to your beneficiary after your death. I think with cryptocurrencies in this case it is even worse for the deceased and his family because without the private keys the coins are forever lost.  Another story for the news

If that was going to happen am afraid to say these coins will be there just growing in value without anyone to claim them and I think this is a what happens with many crypto users bitcoins. And I think it's time to introduce family to this so that should anything happen they have some crypto to remember about should they decide to use it after am gone.

It would be just wasteful if you do let all of your hardwork and effort would come to waste if those coins would be lost forever in the void when you are gone.

We dont hold our own life and anytime we would really die no matter what age you do have right now.It is just right that you should be mindful about on how those coins would be passed up as inheritance.

You can make some will and tend to be opened only when you are gone which having corresponding instructions on how to access those wallet but of course before you die then you should

at least tell your family about crypto or just simply telling the basics.

I think it important we share our wallet details with either our family member or friend. If one dies, and he/she have not informed anyone about his/her private keys. The coins won't be accessable. Am thinking of introducing cryptocurrency and how it works to my younger brother and probably give him my private keys, so in case am no more, he can manage my coins. Another important issue here is trust, you have to trust your beneficiary. To make sure he/she won't misuse your Cryptocurrencies Investments.

After the death of a person, not all worldly possessions are of any use to him. However, the property left behind may be occupied by someone of his lineage. I have written all the documents in my cryptocurrency in the name of my only daughter all the password security system notebook. My daughter will be the only partner after my death.

Even you are healthy, it doesn't guarantee you to live longer than people who are sick. The reasons to die are varied, no one can predict how he will die and when it is. Because of this fact, we must prepare everything, including sharing our important assets with the most trusted person in our life. If you think your children or wife can be trusted, just give the priority to them. They are the nearest people in our life, always be there to help us every time.

Sickness isn't the only thing that can kill you; there are a variety of situations you could find yourself in if it's your time to go. We don't know where we'll die, and we can't predict how or when we'll die, so I agree that assuring or securing your keys to some relatives is the best fit solution. Of course, you don't want those coins to go to waste just because you die; instead, make certain that someone will inherit and benefit from them.

Coins will not be lost or die.  even if we die, so the coins will forever be in our wallet.  It is important to take small notes and teach our children about crypto.  Then give the private key to them to be inherited.

I know the chances are low, but you could also survive an accident and not remember where you put your private keys. I think you should have back up of some kind that represents an interface between you and your wealth that also involves a bit of trust. There is no way around it. The only way to eliminate that risk is to bear the other risk to really take it all with you into the grave. That would be sad, even from a social standpoint. You could also give your wealth to people in need instead of taking it with you into the grave.

You can rent space in a safe deposit box in a bank and put important papers there, however there is one big problem and that is that many governments have the ability to open those boxes without notifying you or asking for any legal order, which means that if the bank in which you have that information is investigated by the government for some reason those people could steal your coins and there is nothing that you can do to protect yourself from that kind of attack.

Its one of the things that do really boggles up my mind when you do entrusted those things into a bank because if possible problem occurs then it might really result into those confiscation of assets
and would really be putting it on problems into those papers or whatever things you had left on that deposit box.

You wouldnt know on what would happen into next days because situations like this could really happen unexpectedly. You cant really trust up any institutions or services out there about
storing up important belongings of a certain person specially if government would really be making decision.

Im storing my keys or seedphrases into several number of USB's or backups with have some notepad on it and telling those information or instructions on how to access my coins in case i die.

I would let them know first that if ever i do pass away those USB's should really be opened but i havent told them that there are fortune inside it and since i dont earn that much or save significant amount

but still that would be a good amount that could give out some good life or savings. We dont hold our own lives this is why we should be prepared at least.

Already we've got more few millions of Bitcoin sitting idle on different addresses and can't be retrieved, because those are lost. What you do adds to that and it doesn't contribute anything to the network, so good is to register for a vault and secure your private keys on it. If something happens to you, those things on the vault will be given to the name you've added as nominee on registration.

If you do not share your private phrase or private key with your family, your Bitcoins will be encrypted in a specific digital block of the system forever. No one has the ability to control them without your private key. It's best to keep your private key hidden and go with some clues to help your family recover them after your death.

Also, if you use an exchange service or store your Bitcoin in a custodial wallet, there is a famous saying "Not your keys not your coin".

coins will not be anything, I think right now if you have bitcoin assets you have to tell your wife or children so that they can become assets for them in the future. if we don't tell anyone, the assets are useless
Death never comes in human life, a person can die at any time. So if you have entered the world of cryptocurrency, all your documents will be among your relatives whom you value the most Believers can be handed over to him. If he has some knowledge in the world of cryptocurrency, he will be able to recover the property you left behind.

But when you think about it, I am sure that only a minority of people involved with cryptocurrencies has prepared a sophisticated emergency plan such that after an unexpected death the family or whoever has a real chance to retrieve all digital assets with ease. When you are into crypto for a long time and you hoarded coins from all those different networks out there, perhaps possess a multitude of wallets, you know what I am talking about. That requires effort on your behalf to also keep that up to date, to store it in structured and organized ways and to also take care of it frequently as if you were expecting to die in an unexpected way. Not many people do that.
