My friend is into sports. To be precise, he takes up cycling. His birthday is coming up and I want to give him a present. But I don't know what to give sportsmen. Clothes? Money?

You can ask directly to your friend what he dreams of having. You do not know what he wants and still trying to get but if you ask, you will know about that. If the stuff he wants is too expensive for us to buy, maybe you can give him money to buy or save that money to buy it in the future. Maybe he dreams of having tools from a popular company or other things.

Just Give him at least a Cleats Shoes ? or a New Upgrade set for His Cogs and Crank .

The choice depends on the value of the gift. More expensive gifts are always more difficult to choose.
Giving money to teens is good, but I wouldn't recommend giving money to an adult with a steady income.

Just ask him what he wants for his birthday. No need for any surprise so that whatever he asks and needs, you'll buy it directly.

Why not just take him for lunch or dinner. Physical presents are cool but I think he would appreciate to spend time & have some good laughs & drinks with his good friend.

It's tough. Do you think your friend would appreciate a hand-chosen gift, or would they be just as happy with $50 gift card from Amazon? I wouldn't get any type of clothing or accessories unless you walk into a bike shop and ask them for something generic that all people into cycling need on a regular basis. 

My favorite gift if cycling (or a different career) was my passion would be something I desperately need to help my cycling career. Or you could just secretly inquire from your friend's family to know what he desperately needs or what he will appreciate the most and get some for him.

Since he is into cycling, so I would bring some accessories if you know what is missing or else if you know the size then probably t-shirt, cap, shorts, shoes if you have good budget etc. Depending on budget you can customize the things and gift him.

Sex.  Who doesn't love sex?

If you are too close, why not give him money.

Allow him to use that money for his enjoyment, whether he buy it some new clothes or something that will really delight him.

or like with others advise, ask him and grant his request as long as it's fits with your budget.

With your little experience with him, you could deduce one or two things he  admires about sport and make it a surprise present, example: cyclist tour or cinema hangout, sport books and materials if he loves reading or a birthday cake decorated with sport display.

Give a selfhelp manual on computer upgrades reference books new accessories or computer inventions flash drives video cards ultra sensitive mice a modern gift is a good camera tablet or e book. These are everyone's choice as gifts these gifts are easy to enjoy.

If his financial situation is stable and can afford all the gadgets required for his sport then offer anything like clothes or watches,etc or else you should buy him something related to his sport and which should be useful for him.

I agree. The smartwatch would be a great gift for amateur athletes. I think OP should read up on what kind of smartwatch is more suited for a casual exercise activity like cycling.

A new Helmet i guess? there is a cool helmet that can be folded but very expensive .

Because your friend likes cycling, it means he likes anything related to cycling. For birthday gifts, you should not give money, because in my opinion
it is less memorable. Although everyone usually likes money, birthday gifts should be something that the recipient can always remember. I think
bicycle accessories, it will impress him with you. Because he must think you support him in cycling, it will make him happy.

Take him into the world of cryptocurrency, this will be a life-changing gift. 8)

Some ideas for a friend who likes cycling could be some headphones for listening to music when hes riding. 
If he has them already then how about a heart rate monitor system.

You are the one who knows your friend and what kind of things will satisfy him because if you don;t know those things then you are not really His friend.

Try to put your self towards him and think what will you wish on your birthday.

Sometimes, they do not want to accept our money because I have one best friend who does not want to take it even if that is a gift. But if I said that money is not for him but his kids, he will accept it. But I think that is not a good idea because we do not know if his friend is single or has a family. Maybe @OP can ask him to join us to go to some local store and buying him a product that he really wants can be better.

For a good friend I would always buy something, money is a bit impersonal. I know that cyclist love high functional clothes when they ride bikes. Why not look for a cool new bike shirt? These come always handy, especially for longer tours where you change your clothes regularly.
