Title: Wattmeter Antminer T17 and T19
Post by: kritment on September 04, 2021, 01:15:52 PM
Hey Guys,
Quick question, is there a way on the default Bitmain firmware to get the power consumption? Maybe via the API or something?
Thanks

no you need a hard meter of some kind.

Even if there was, a hardware device is always better for this since an electronic device like a Bitcoin ASIC miner or a normal PC, can't know the exact power draw of all components on the PCB; and it's especially tricky to factor in external stuff the power efficiency of the PSU. That can at best be roughly guessed.
For mining though, you absolutely want to know the total draw at the wall (because that's what you pay for) - including any losses in PSU or anywhere else in the system, so that's why the thing measuring the energy consumption has to be 'at the wall'.

Some custom firmware like Vnish and BO+ give you somehow an accurate wattage reading, it will still be in the -+2-3% range I guess, so if you are looking for a very accurate reading you will need a hardware watmetter of some kind, however, keep in mind that most of these meters are not rated for the power consumption of these miners, you will need something that can handle 3000w.

Understood on the hardware.
But if I want the power consumption numbers like 3rd party firmware, is there a way to get that on the bitmain default firmware?
thanks

no you need a hard meter.

a s17 has two plugs you can use two hard meters which will each show 1300 watts or so.

a s19 pro has two plugs you can use two hard meters which will each show 1650 watts or so.

if you program an s17 with brains you can set a specific wattage like 2000 and the software will attempt to send exactly 2000 watts to the unit.

bitmain firmware does not do this.

Thanks for the advise

I do not agree, a firmware can in no case indicate the consumption! is a dream !

the best thing they can do is guess, that's what they're doing, they only have predefined tables to give the power.

This does not include temperature, network voltage, ambient temperature variations! and therefore, the variation can go up to 10%! so do not stick, it only gives an estimate.

I fully agree with Philipma, ONLY physical powermetter give you REAL power consumption ;)
