Title: 0.5 mBTC missing
Post by: Flames703 on September 27, 2021, 10:50:04 PM
I wanted to try gambling on rollbit, and as I made my account on electrum and transferred about 30$ all went well so far.
When I sent the 30$ to rollbit, only about 7$ arrived, my question really just is where the other ~23$ went.

When viewing the blockchain hash, it seems like 0.5 mBTC went off to another address, which I never entered anywhere
I had 0.66 mBTC in total, so after the fee +  the amount that actually arrived at rollbit, it all adds up.

Thanks for any replies...

It could be that you actually only transferred ~0.16 mBTC and the remaining 0.5 mBTC went to one of your change addresses. Is the amount missing on your Electrum wallet balance (at the bottom)?

It looks like you created a 2FA wallet. TrustedCoin charges 0.0005 BTC (https://trustedcoin.com/#/faq#fees) for every 20 transactions. If you don't want to be charged in the future then you should create a new normal wallet and move your coins there. You can also disable 2FA by importing your seed phrase into Electrum, but your transactions will always be slightly more expensive since they will be sent from a multi-signature address rather than from a native SegWit one.

What version of Electrum did you download and are you sure that did you download it from electrum.org?
Did you verify the Electrum before you installed it?

If you don't care about privacy you can share your TXID here so that we can analyze it and see what happens.

The old version of Electrum lower than 3.3.4 are still under phishing attack so if you are using lower than that you might be installed a fake Electrum.

You can double-click on the transaction in the "History" tab and see if the second output is highlighted in some way. I believe that it should be blue which would mean that it was a payment to TrustedCoin.

Oh yeah thanks, I do find it pretty shitty that I "lost" 24$ because of that though, shouldve done more research i guess.

Aaand sry for the late reply, seems like i couldnt post more than twice because of a limit on this site, my bad...

Would you mind sharing your TXID you can PM it to me for privacy and let me check them for you if you created a wallet with 2FA or it was sent to your change address?

Without much info about your issue, we can't understand what your problem is without screenshots or TXID.

Look at your first post this part "I had 0.66 mBTC in total, so after the fee +  the amount that actually arrived at rollbit"

Many people have "lost" their Bitcoins through 2FA, but it is actually explained when you install Electrum.
My advice: take this as a very cheap lesson and don't just click through popups when dealing with Bitcoin. Read everything, make sure you understand the details, and Preview each Bitcoin transaction before clicking Send. While you're at it: thoroughly check the address (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5190776.0) too. This could prevent you from making much more expensive mistakes later on.

I think the mystery is solved. OP didn't confirm it, but judging by his reply to Rath_, it does seem like his coins went to TrustedCoin.

I have never used a 2FA Electrum wallet, so I don't know how the unsent transaction looks when in preview mode. But does Electrum show the output that will be sent to TrustedCoin during the preview stage? It's explained when you set up the wallet, but do you also see the output when it's time to pay? I guess it must show up.

Yes, see the blue colored output:

There is also a tooltip text if you hover it ("TrustedCoin (2FA) fee for the next batch of transactions"): https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/f49db86ea8f53adf21f61259e977c6bed2179b86/electrum/gui/qt/transaction_dialog.py#L144

That's good. So, it does appear in the preview. However, the amount isn't displayed in the outputs window. And if you hover over it with your mouse, it just says that the output is a TrustedCoin 2FA fee. Electrum doesn't show how big the fee is. I think it could save some beginners from losing money because of these fees if everything is displayed correctly.

Any idea why they opted to make it this way?
Can it be because TrustedCoin has different fee plans and pricing models?

Correct. You can pay 0.0005 BTC for 20 transactions, which works out to 2,500 sats per transaction, or you can pay 0.00125 for 100 transactions, which works out to 1,250 sats per transactions.

In your 2FA wallet, you can click the small TrustedCoin logo at the bottom right (next to the green network connected circle) to open a pop up box which lets you choose between the two payment methods, as well as showing you how many remaining transactions you have paid for before you need to pay the fee again.

All of that is good and I knew some of those things already. Wasn't sure about the price though. But back to my original question. Why isn't the amount that will be subtracted from the balance shown in the outputs window after the TrustedCoin address? I just feel it would be clearer if it was.

I'm not sure I follow your question. In the picture TryNinja has shared above, you can see the 1 mBTC fee after the TrustedCoin address, highlighted in blue. This screenshot was obviously taken back when the trusted coins fees were 0.0025 or 0.001, rather than 0.00125 or 0.0005 as they are now.

I do think it would be nicer if there was a pop up explaining the fee and the two possible options when you make your first transaction though, as not everyone will know to click on the TrustedCoin logo.

On a second look, I guess you are right. I didn't think that was the amount because there is a dot after the number 1. Why would it display a dot if there isn't a decimal number followed by it :-\
Anyways, thanks for clarifying it.

OP had ways of knowing that he created a 2FA wallet during the setup process and when creating this transaction of his. Electrum displays the amount for the 2FA, even though the dot isn't supposed to be there.
