Title: Difference between Profile Information post count and Actual Post (II)
Post by: Don Pedro Dinero on April 29, 2022, 06:04:44 AM
I noticed a difference between my post count yesterday and today that cannot be due to deleted posts.

I went to my profile and I see Posts: 2251

If I go to Show the last posts of this person I get 2305.

I have searched and I see that according to this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2212281.0 it has to do with ignoring boards but I have removed all the ones I had from ignore and it still shows up the same way.

Do you know why?

I guess it's because

- Posts in Serious Discussion only activate a potential-activity period. They do not increase your post count.
- Posts in Ivory Tower neither activate a potential-activity period nor increase your post count.

I saw some of your threads and replies on this board Serious discussion > Ivory Tower. Which is probably the case.

<...>

That’s it. If we check ninjastic and filter by posts in Serious Discussion (+ mark the child board mark), we retrieve 54 posts, which is exactly the difference shown in the OP.

Mostly because of the boards in which the number of posts is not counted for your total posts, but this number is not always accurate, I remember that a recount occurred a previous time.

you can read more here

- There are a few rare mod/admin actions which change your real number of posts but neglect to update your post count.
- Errors can occur which can cause it to drift from the real value.
- If your account is fairly old, then previous post-count recounts will have counted your MOVED: redirection topics, even though these are not counted when you make them. I fixed it this time so that these topics are not counted, undoing the previous erroneous recounts.

and example for recount:

I did a global recount of user posts starting yesterday. Your post count had been inaccurate.

Other than signature campaigns, nobody cares about your total post count.

Good catch, completely forgot about those boards

Off-topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=9.0) should have the same rules if you ask me, but it would "derank" a lot of accounts and since it's been around for a while, being board no. 9, it would have too much retroactive repercussions. Maybe a "from now on" approach might be worthwhile

I'm usually skeptical about any action taken to discourage posting in the Off-topic board, mostly because those members who contribute to the spam would not just pack up and leave, they would rather look for alternate boards to spam easily. This would greatly increase the job moderators do and add to the growing spam around the forum.

It's easy to not visist a certain board if you don't find it interesting, but if the same activity spreads around all the boards, that's not so easy to ignore.

What we could need is a moderator who's dedicated to that board. I haven't seen mods who are dedicated to such boards, Beginners and help plus Politics & Society in a while.

Good thing is very few, or no serious members start topics in that board

I hope that won't happen. Serial spammers will just move elsewhere when they realize that their post count and activity isn't improving and that would just create more problems with more spam in some other parts of the forum. My guesses would be Bitcoin and Altcoin Discussion and Gambling Discussion. I say keep them there and pull the blinds down so no one sees what they are doing.
