Post by: romero121 on September 28, 2022, 08:12:24 AM
Guys down to the official tweet from Vitalik about the release of his Book Proof Of Stake there is a scam account that resembles same as Vitalik's official Twitter account. If you watch closely you can easily find the difference. The scammer have described about a 100,000 ETH as a celebration of merge. Please be careful and don't loss your ethereum.

Thanks, I haven't check this one out yet but we all know that this scammers are going to used this one. And it just make sense of this criminals to take advantage because ETH and Vitalik is on the social media and other news because of the ETH Merge.

And hopefully no gullible crypto enthusiast will fall for this. We've seen a lot of fake giveaways from Elon Musk during his height as a so called crypto influencer to Vitalik today.

I don't know if it's a bot or real users, but they're replying the scammer tweet like it's genuine lol. Actually it's already clear the difference is from their twitter username, smart people wouldn't get trapped by this particular scam.

I search @rolmeda real name is Rafael Olmeda, who is him? if his account doesn't get hacked, I think he will go to the jail if there's many report created and the police obviously can get his personal information considering social media have low privacy.

I think this is a common thing where many verified Twitter accounts are hacked and turned into vitalik.buterin accounts to create fake giveaways with 100,000 ETH to be distributed, this is very illogical and how can there be a giveaway of that size, but somehow scammers have to stay alert for any scams, whereas verified accounts usually have a lot of followers so the target of scammers is their followers who don't know anything and try to do it, that's what we need to realize that it's all a scam.

There is one thread from @ajiz138 about scams with verified Twitter. Fake Giveaway Ethereum: by using the blue tick (verification) on his Twitter (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5413348.0)

Blue tag is really a mess especially the one who handle it is a professional scammer. Maybe twitter should be attentive on users who are impersonating some popular users like Vitalik cause this can harm investors money through such post. Also I cant be fool with such followers like that. Vitalik has million followers and this one is not. Better to restrict accounts caught imitating or copying others.

I am sorry but this is such an easy thing to see that if you are still falling for it, maybe you need to fall for it to learn better? At the end of the day I have never got fooled by these before, but let's assume I could back in the day when they first started, but now?

Now, we are talking about something that is insanely common and people are still falling for it, this is known now and it is common enough that even newbies know about it, and you still feel like it could be real? In that case you should be staying away from it. Back in the day, they would even get names close to Vitalik as well, nowadays their username is totally different at least.

People like him is the reason why Vitalik has changed his name before like "not giving ethereum" sort of like that name.

It's too sad that there are still people that fall for this scam.

They don't hover through the details on only sees the number. Well, these people will learn the lesson the hard way if they don't improve themselves like reading the very simple hint that it's a scam.

Oh yeah this scam, nothing new. In fact I’m so used to it that if someday Real vitalik publishes such giveaway then also I won’t believe it.  ;D It’s like I have switched on ignore butting for 100,000 ETH on the Twitter. There is no point in believing in such stuff and I am sadden if anyone or even a noob is falling for such trap. First thing first, this is internet world where nobody sees no one and it’s literally net of trap! If there is any positive news, like even if some celebrity is giving birth then these scammers will turn that news into profit making machine. By the time scams are exposed many people get scammed. Better self learn and keep teaching others to stay away from these.  :)

I was honestly baited on the photo on my first glance, I just noticed the username because of the red box. Scammers are improving nowadays and they seem using blue check accounts to imitate others. This is like an upgraded version of the twitter Elon Musk copycat scams that are doing the same thing which is giveaways. I'm not fond of joining these kind of too good to be true offers in social media but I'm sure someone can possibly fall in the scammers hand by just having these blue checks on their username.

Nothing wrong to warning people, however the scammer now is cleaver using "Verified" account to Impersonate. Makes success scam chance more higher

A similar scam on Twitter has recently become widespread. And if you conduct your own research, you can easily establish that this account has been hacked and is being used for fraud. But a beginner, when he sees a free distribution and a photo of Vitalik, does not want to think and as a result loses his money.

Well thanks for the warning OP. I think though that this warning is mostly relevant for people that are pretty new to the crypto space, because everyone else that has at least a few weeks of experience in this space knows already that the crypto world is full of scammers and shillers. You always need to check the account name on twitter as you have outlined and this is not only true for twitter but also for telegram. People can choose the display name that they like and there can be thousands of the same nickname at the same time, but your account name has to be unique. Always be careful guys and never give away your private key to anyone and never connect your wallet to a linked website.

not only on twitter but even on facebook this kind of fraud still works, their way of working is like bots that work automatically when the targeted account makes a tweet or post, they immediately come to share the information and link, right now i see these scammers active on telegram also i think they are still doing this do they often succeed in deceiving people, so they continue to be eager to improve their working skills everywhere every day, maybe some people also already know they are scammers, but whatever it is it is very important you make this thread so beginners can avoid this kind of scam

Every giveaway, especially if its a big amount should be checked and double-checked, we have seen this happens so many times on Youtube, on Telegram and every time there's a big event, whenever there are big events or big news expect a big manipulation and imitation by scammers, this is not 2012 where developers can be so generous airdropping their own tokens, especially if the token already has values, the Cryptocurrency industry is a place where you should always do diligence and moderating your greed, forget about FOMO do the right thing, research and research.

I see this a lot while treading in Twitter. It also happens in Facebook wherein an official news article page would post then a fake clone of the page would comment out. If the page would do giveaways anyways, they could just do it in another post.
When I see a supposed official page comment out on their own post, I sometimes get a lot suspicious from it and I never click any sort of links from the comment for obvious purposes let alone if Telegram link was given, lol.

This happened already before and this is not new though scammer account now are already verified which is too alarming especially if newbies will see such offer. I never become a victim of this since I don’t believe that they will double your money if you send some to them, that’s an old trick that we should always be careful to deal with. Not an official twitter account, not an official announcement then it’s a scam.

Impersonating is rampant in every social media platform, and anyone falling for this obvious scam must learn how to read and differentiate things.  They should also play the game called spot the differences in order to heighten their observation ability.

smart people wouldn't get trapped by this particular scam.
Doesn't mean, everyone are not gonna falling to scam.

True, even though this kind of scam is too obvious, many people still fall for this kind of scam, reason why scammers continuously use this scheme to trap people.  Many of them are newbies who are blinded by greed and in a haste to take the chance to get in on the fake airdrop.

I was honestly baited on the photo on my first glance, I just noticed the username because of the red box. Scammers are improving nowadays and they seem using blue check accounts to imitate others. Scammers are performing better than the actual project's marketing scheme.  They are far more observant in the market and tend to exploit anything that will bait people into their scammy schemes.  These scammers are also well versed on how the crypto works and mimic them in order to bait unwary and naive newbie investors.

I don't know but are there really people that will be believed in this shit?

Even newbies can use their common sense to sense that this kind of promotion is not a legit one. I don't find being a newbie is a reason to fall into this trap.

Newbies are not that dumb. They can understand the difference between shit and not even though they are new to the crypto world. Maybe people are just greedy and honestly, even experienced ones are risking on that giveaway even though they know that's not legit.

The best thing is to always be skeptical about all giveaway events, always check them all on social media before joining, don't be too hasty for fear of missing out. Scammers always take advantage of the big events of some famous coins to scam. The people who often fall into the trap are mostly newbies because they lack the knowledge to distinguish what is a scam from what is real.

They are so clever that they even have an official twitter account to equate it with the real Vilalik. But thinking logically it's impossible for there to be an ethereuum giveaway of up to 100,000 because ethereum has been so successful there's no need to gather a community anymore. be careful with this kind of scams in the name of top tier coins.
For people like us which have been in the market for a long time such a scam no matter how well disguised will never deceive us, as we will immediately see through the intentions of the scammers, but for the people that think that in this market obtaining money is easy and it can be obtained easily this kind of scam can and will deceive them, as they will not think that there is something suspicious about it and they may think it makes a lot of sense for such a distribution of coins to happen, so it is important to raise awareness that scams like this one are around so those newbies can avoid them.

These scam giveaways will never stop as long as there are people who fall for this scheme, it's been years since these scam giveaways started but we still see a lot of these reports, the community has done their part reporting these scam giveaways, but we have many people coming in and misled because in the early days of Cryptocurrency there are many legit airdrops and giveaways but we are past this, great projects should be supported by investing on these projects so they can continue to evolve and get a good standing in the market.

When I read on Twitter that the massive distribution is worth 100,000 ETH, that's a huge amount in dollars that if I total is over 133M$, what crazy person would give away that much money for free? Those kinds of words are those people who are hard to believe, honestly, we're just talking real here.

So if you read something like that, it's a sign that you should be careful. It means you are close to a scammer person in the cryptocurrency industry. I can't imagine how these scammers would be so brave. I hope our police will sweep and catch them and put them in jail for life.

Always follow the official verified twitter handel for every famous person which is you believe and followed there activities . and it will more better if you enable notification of your every favourite famous person to get any update instantly . and do not believe any receiving massage from any social media and unknown person without verify it yourself

Even if you follow such verified accounts of famous people, then you also cannot be protected from fraud. Suffice it to recall how 2 years ago the accounts of Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and other celebrities were hacked and an announcement was placed about doubling BTC. Even Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's account has been hacked, so apparently there is no 100% account protection.

It was a big scam, no doubt of it.
When I heard about that amount and said giveaway, it appears in my mind and ask how reliable is this. Everyone can create the same name in social media and copy the original picture of the person and there is only one reason - for scamming purposes. It is obviously eye-catching, innocent and greedy people will possibly take the bait and regret it after. In fact, it was a known scam trick and I hope people should even think before jumping.

Scammers will always take advantage of moments to cheat, when they see the current trend, the process of merges in ETH, many people think that Airdrops is true and does not hesitate to immediately connect wallets to prohibited sites, we as investors must always be realistic.
Of course, otherwise the accumulated assets in the wallet will be lost. Scammers always try to prey on various tempting offers. Their trend of abduction has increased at a massive rate and the number of victims are also increasing day by day. So it is better to avoid such offers.

In fact, it was an old and known scam trick, and surely this has been spread on all social media platforms. It was us who gonna blame, not the one who use to trick us.

The object of such fraud are newcomers who do not have minimal knowledge about cryptocurrency, but have heard that there is an opportunity to get a huge profit here. Usually, after such a lesson, as a result of which they lose their money, they become more cautious.

I think this is one of the most used methods by scammers. It is actually a very simple fraud method, but not everyone knows that it is a simple fraud method. Scammers are deceiving novices with this trap. That's why they still use this tactic. Thank you to the OP for reminding us again of this simple cheating method. I hope novice users will also learn from this sharing.
it's an easy and very easy way to get a lot of people interested in things like this, all things that are accompanied by gifts, will automatically make people interested and sometimes immediately believe, even if you think about where there is a time like this. those who want to be helpers without a purpose want to commit fraud to enrich themselves.
a very simple method but many people are lulled by things like this, but it is very sympathetic for anyone who wants to continue to provide fraudulent information like this, so that not many are deceived.
Reminding each other is certainly very necessary where indeed the situation is difficult with bounties that do not produce good grades, fraudulent things like this will continue to make many tempted.

I hope people don't fall for this scheme. From looking at the Twitter page and account, it may be difficult to differentiate from the original account of vitalik considering the fact that the scammers have a large followership and have been getting incessant retweets, likes and comments. The major thing that could put them out is the qty of eth to be distributed which is over a billion dollar worth.

People who fall into this scam will just be newbies, they usually don't notice or check many times before joining, and they will join immediately, because for newbies they usually like to earn free money. These scams are not new, it happens constantly on twitter, if you regularly use this social network you will find it popular up there.
Many newbies always fall for this trap because of their greediness and having the impression of getting rich with crypto, they are easily gullible by this type of Twitter messages thinking it is real infact some of them wouldn't be convinced that it's fake because it is well packaged look real and genuine until they fell victim of the scam, I also expect the twitter message be taken down by twitter admin, meanwhile the clever newbies make more enquires to know the validity of the message because sending their coins to the fraudsters to avoid being scam and falling victim of the fraud.

This is a common thing, where scammers take advantage of the big and long-awaited moment to take advantage of the excitement of others and try to drain their wallets with the lure of giving big prizes. They try to imitate as much as possible to how to reply so that others do not suspect.
However, for people who are quite thorough with this will quickly realize that it is something deceptive, especially if the person is looking for information about the information in depth. Well, no wonder scammers try to imitate famous people out there to deceive others.
Perhaps, it was a very common and known trick but unfortunately, many people are still believing this one. Not that I see people are learning about scams even though it was already published online and spreading awareness. What I think is that they are still deceived by these scammers and all of those warnings are just absolutely gone once hearing things like this (huge giveaways).

100,000 ETH - you will be wondering why it happens and could ask yourself "if this is true? And then think about a possible scam.

when I see this kind of distribution, I always understand that it will be a scam.Officials never conduct such giveaways, moreover, on Twitter and just like that. They are designed for absolutely fools who came to the cryptocurrency 15 minutes ago.But there should be such a topic on the forum, maybe someone else is not familiar with this type of fraud.

Yeah! because other guys especially newbies don't have any idea how this scam works, especially with their new tactics nowadays were they gonna focus on some popular celebrities to post their fake giveaways, and their tools to scam people are also updated. Newbies really need to often read some preventions on scammers, especially those who are newly posted before engaging in any investment to protect themselves from these frauds.

First of all, thanks for alerting us. Such incidents happen often. Scammers are always using new methods to trick us. Such giveaways are mostly fake. So I have omitted to apply to them. If one wants to apply in these, one should research well and then make a decision.
Scammers have no end of new strategies. They try to scam one after another. For example, someone is doing a new project, someone is scamming by promise to give a giveaway, and someone is opening various platforms of staking type and taking everything from there. But now it is more urgent for everyone to be aware. Scammers will be forced to stop doing them themselves when they fail to recognize victim. So it is necessary to increase awareness.

This are run by any professional scammer . Sometimes something like this happens against Elon Musk and another  famous person Twitter account . But most of the news picture is edited. And some things are handled by some professional scammers and hackers . So we must be wary of them and if we feel anything doubt we must check with orginal account.
Yes, this kind of incident has been happening for a long time. We always have to take care of one thing that the page from which we see the news is verified first.  But now hackers and fraudsters are all over the place so the more we can stay away from them the better.
Always follow the official verified twitter handel for every famous person which is you believe and followed there activities . and it will more better if you enable notification of your every favourite famous person to get any update instantly . and do not believe any receiving massage from any social media and unknown person without verify it yourself

If we have the opportunity to identify victims of these scams attempts, we will surely find novice people who really think that money can be obtained that easily, or greedy who are not good at doing any useful activity and all they are looking for is easy money.

Fortunately, in the field of crypto we have a Bitcointalk forum, where we can ask about everything that we may encounter and be sure of its credibility, since the forum includes the finest members with experience and expertise. Unfortunately, not everyone knows about it.

Thanks. I have never bumped into this yet in Twitter but I appreciate the warning.
Damn, why do people keep on doing this kind of scam attempt? It's not like they will find a lot of victims from the too-good-to-be-true strategy.
I mean, it's not really working anymore so they should start thinking about new evil ways. :D Social media should also keep their security higher by banning this people in an instant.

They mostly targeted those newcomers who thinks that cypto still have this same scheme and they will be able to catch something that gives them decent free bonuses, but yes, thanks to OP for bringing this up as readers here will be aware and will keep an eye with a kind of promotions, it's better to being aware even you are not really taking any actions who knows curiosities lead you being a victim of the kind of schemes.

During the Ethereum merge process, there was no Giveaway, there was an ETHW hard fork. And I also earn ETHW for the amount of Ethereum I hold. I see today's scammers easily commit fraud, they even make posts directly through our account. This has also gone viral with a BTC giveaway from Elon Musk.

While it is true that if you know what you are looking for then it is almost impossible you are going to fall for this scam, we must also remember that not every single person has the same experience and knowledge that we have, so for a lot of people a scam like this does not really look like one and instead they look at this as an opportunity to get some free money, and once that happens very few people are going to stop and think about this being a possible scam, because at that time they are making haste because they believe that if they do not then they will lose the chance to participate in such a giveaway.

Scammers will never stop as long as there is a willing victim , specially those who are greedy and of course those newbie that only seek for instant earning and not willing to dig deeper about everything .

and 100k Giveaway? that is too much to release for now as we knew that the crypto market is suffering from the world dropping economy.

They are growing because they see that it was easy to make money from doing this.
And we don't have a chance to rid of these scammers but have a big chance to avoid them. Like not trusting easily with these giveaways, not being greedy, and making a habit to do research.

These scammers won't succeed if we don't let them. In fact, it was easy to assess the event if that is a scam or legit but unfortunately, mostly we missed this because of money that manipulates our minds.

There are many scam attempts these days on twitter using the name of Vitalik for that purpose. Scammers hack verified twitter accounts from every nationalities and change the picture plus account name to Vitalik and start spamming the social media's crypto posts with informations and links of a giveaway which doesn't exist.

I don't know exactly what happens if you click the link, because I never went ahead fearing being hacked by something malicious on it. Better to just ignore.

Previous attempts used Elon Musk credentials, now it is Vitalik's turn. Who might be the next personality exploited by scammers in crypto environment?

I already thought about it now saw a news. Please follow the right path without paying attention to such news. When such news happens, maybe different hackers hack the account and make such news from his account only to deceive people.I repeat you should not believe this kind of news it is completely fake news.

The issue we have is that since this market is getting more popular as time passes not only this increases the amount of people we have in this market, this also increases the number of scammers, and since the people coming here do not have any experience when it comes to investing their money they believe whatever lie which is told by scammers and actually think that someone could organize such a giveaway, when the people which have been here for some time knows this is practically impossible and such a thing is a very obvious sign that scammers are just fishing for new victims.

Most of the retweets come from the scammers itself, so the "giveaway" would look legit even though it's a scam if you are around the community for long time, this thing is pretty obvious a scam.
Just make sure to check everything from the profile and everything, don't conclude everything instantly when you see big name and verified profile in their user's flair.

I don't know if it's a bot or real users, but they're replying the scammer tweet like it's genuine lol. Actually it's already clear the difference is from their twitter username, smart people wouldn't get trapped by this particular scam.

Not smart people. You can say those who know Vitalik real account will not get deceived by that but those who do not know and are greedy to participate will be scammed. The similarity in both accounts is close. Until now I did not know Vitalik's real account, though am not interested in freebies.

I search @rolmeda real name is Rafael Olmeda, who is him? if his account doesn't get hacked, I think he will go to the jail if there's many report created and the police obviously can get his personal information considering social media have low privacy.

And if he is caught and he makes this excuse of his account being hacked, all the money he scammed will be traced. He can not escape it if those he scams get to report him to the police.

For now we should never believe in airdrops or giveaways that give big rewards, currently for bounties in this forum the budget is usually $20k or the equivalent of 16 ETH divided by more than 1000 participants, it's ridiculous if we believe in airdrops that give big rewards.

It is why you have the option and will whether you want to join those bounties or not. You're not obliged to join each of them if you think that they have a small budget and has a large pool of participants. It's different from the typical airdrop scams that will ask you to send them money so that they can send back to you the reward that they're promising. Well, in reality, there's not that a lot of free money in the world these days so if it's like a lot really, you have the guess already and doubt it.

I doubt that the real Rafael Almeida is behind this scam, since in this case it would not be difficult for the police to find him and bring charges. If we calculate the current ETH value around $ 1300, then equivalent to $130,000,000, if this happens in 2016 or 2017 then I believe, at that time many bounties or giveaways that provide paid up to millions of dollars, And for now it is better to ignore things like this.

Do not be shocked if you find out that there are some people who still believe this is possible in today.

Twitter and YouTube are the most known cases of fake giveaways of cryptocurrencies on behalf of famous personalities. Of course, the leader is ETH. All these phishing pages and giveaways are based on one simple human phenomenon. It is called inattention. People are too lazy to check something, clarify, ask questions about similar giveaways in other social networks, chat rooms, channels. Instead, they rush as quickly as possible to give their money, naively believing that this distribution from public figures. This method is now four or five years old. How much longer will it take for people to understand these simple basics when interacting with cryptocurrencies?

Scammers give such huge numbers because they are hoping that people do not stop to think about it and instead they rush to participate as they want to get part of the giveaway for themselves, and it is obvious that it works as we have seen many cases like this in the past and people are scammed for a lot of money, and until people educate themselves about all of those scams and how to identify them then this will keep happening, since scammers do not see any reason to change at all when such an obvious tactic keeps working so well.

cases like this have actually happened a long time ago and will continue to happen at any time.
but i'm sure that people out there can tell the difference between vitalik real twitter and fake twitter. and people who know crypto can also think logically when it is impossible for the owner of ethereum vitalik to give away of 100,000 ETH with a very high value.
well maybe some people are also deceived because the account has a blue tick like the original vitalik. but if you think using logic it will be seen if the account is fake. and there is a possibility that the blue tick account is the result of hacking an account belonging to a famous person or artist who was hacked so that the account has blue tick verification.
from here we can be more careful that popular coins are not that easy and not that much give away and always think using logic is better

Scammers create a website with the name of some celebrities like Vitalik, Michael Sayler, or Elon musk and offer something like this. " send 1 bitcoin or 1 Ethereum, you'll get 10 bitcoin or Ethereum back. And newcomers fall into the trap of Scammers who think that their funds will be increased by tenfold, but in reality, they get nothing after sending.
Hence, one should not participate in any such giveaway, it is just a way to scam you. You do not need to send a payment to participate in a Legit Giveaway Or airdrop.

Thanks for calling our attention to this, while we can actually see the username because of the box, an un-observant person attention can easily go to the picture without reference on the username. IMO, the rate of scamming is really on the rise. We also see this in Telegram groups too - we notice groups with just the same name but of course, with different username. If you are the type that fail to confirm the username of the telegram sight you are following, you may fall for the scammers. Attention to details is very important. Even websites can have clones.

Yes, there are already same kind of scamming before and it's good to see that someone address it again for refresher and for awareness, it's best to closely look on that particular account and see if that's legit or just alluring you to participate, scammers are good in trying to engage with people who are lazy and careless, the fact that they are also upgrading their ways to scam people should be noticeable.

Knowing that those scammers are also readers and observers, they are just checking if what kind of scheme they can use to scam people, imitating someone's account is one of the common practices so better to keep yourself aware.

Having these scammers is not the problem, it's the projects that are the real scammers and people do not realize it. I have to say there are so many "projects" that look real, and they make it look like they are working on something that would be great, but in reality they are not really doing anything that would make any sense.

I know that it's not going to be a decent thing, nor a problematic thing if they just continued, but they end up scamming their investors. This doesn't even get called a scam, it's called rug pull, they made it even cuter in the word as well. These are all scammers who steal investors money, and that's our danger right now.

This is information that we should appreciate because many people lose their assets just because they are tempted by the amount of prizes that will be given. and usually the people who are deceived are people who want a gift but do not do research first about the truth of the information received by them. so it is highly recommended for all of us to look for the truth of the information we get, because here are so many scammers who work in various ways.
