Hi there,

For the last years, I've been organizing this little contest. 2022 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5374598.msg58592232#msg58592232) was the annus horribilis. Will 2023 be the annus mirabilis? I don't know, I hope we don't go any lower.
The idea is to make a small fictitious portfolio on January 1st 2023 and to see on December 31 2023 who has performed the best.
Suppose that you have 1000$ and you want to make a small portfolio with 4 altcoins. Which ones do you choose and in what proportion ?

Restrictions :
You can not take BTC (or wrapped BTC etc...).
You are not allowed to put more than 50% of your portfolio in one altcoin.
You must put at least 5% of your portfolio in each altcoin.
You can only take one stable coin (or none).
Take at least one altcoin beyond the 100th position on Coingecko (https://www.coingecko.com/).
Warning : before choosing an alt, check that on Coingecko, there is a tab Historical data (ex : Bitcoin (https://www.coingecko.com/fr/pi%C3%A8ces/bitcoin/historical_data#panel)). If on 01/01/2023, there is no price for your token, it is like playing with 3 Alts.

Explanation :
As the reference "buy" price, I will take the opening price reported by Coingecko in the historical data of 01/01/2023.
And the closing price of 31/12/2023 will be used as reference "sale" price.
The one who will see his or her fictitious portfolio progress the most in terms of value will be declared the big winner.
Whoever bets on the best performing altcoin at the end of 2023 will receive a 100$ bonus on the value of his final portfolio.
Whoever bets on the lowest performing altcoin at the end of 2023 will receive a 100$ penalty on the value of his final portfolio.

Who can participate ?
Anyone as long as you have reached the Member rank (I may lower this limit a little later if there isn't enough participants. Check this post a few days before registration ends if you are a Jr. Member).
You must have received 5 merits between the last 120 days and just before this post.
You must not have any legitimate negative feedback from a DT member (I will decide whether or not a feedback is legitimate).
No multi-accounts, thank you.
Registration end date: 30/12/2022 11:59pm (Paris time).

Please note that if by luck (or misfortune, it depends :)), I'am on the podium, the rewards will not be shifted and the 4th will receive nothing.
Once the contest is over and the ranking is clear (I'll give you a few days to check if everything is OK, I can make mistakes), winners will be contacted by PM to ask for their BTC addresses and I'll send them their rewards. If there is no answer from a winner within 7 days, I will contact the 4th, then the 5th, etc... Rewards will be sent at the same time. Of course, your account should not be banned at the end of the contest. The contest lasts one year, be aware of this.

To dig a little deeper:


1 - Cheqd offers an attractive ssi (self sovereign identity) solution and its market cap is...so ridiculous. And for what it's worth, many qnt og's animate cheqd's community.

2 - I was finally able to enter Aleph Zero in this contest, since it was not possible last year (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5374598.msg58593360#msg58593360). Having invested from the presale, i strongly believe in this layer 1. (And i'm seeing  i'm not the only one to have spotted it, here  ;))

3 - Giga : My 2022 nugget. Offered to the community without any vc behind, created by a dev already recognized and respected (minimal risk of rugpull), this multichain otc swap service is revolutionary in more ways than one.

4 - Casper : I hesitated to keep Casper (with Icp): team delivers slowly but the promise is great. Targeted sector is professionals. Probably results wont show before long enough, But I chose to keep it.


If I had to choose other alts, my choice would then have been towards: $Icp (which for me is largely underrated), $Phonon, $Morpheus Network, $Agoric, $Umee, $XXnetwork, $Ubix , $Taraxa...well I'll stop there :)

I also wish to contribute to this contest by adding a side prize: I will send to the winner the sum in usdt equivalent on December 31, 2023 to: 100 $Cspr + 10 $Azero + 100$Cheqd + 50000 $Gigagswap: this represents today only a little less than 20 dollars but who knows what it will be worth in a year?

I picked Tether because in 2022 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5374598.msg58598282#msg58598282) betting against altcoins turned out to be a good call.
I've added Monero because it's a privacy coin, and one of the few altcoins which I believe to have a long-term future.

After thinking about it for a while, I added Doge, because the damn thing bubbles up once in a while. Who knows, it might do it again.
I've added TryHards just because it sounds cool. And because it's seriously far down the list. Obviously I don't have very high hopes for this one, so don't take this as investment advice.

I have two questions.
1. What do you consider as a stable coin? I.e. is PAX Gold (https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/pax-gold) a stable coin? Or what about Neutrino USD (https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/neutrino-usd) which pretends to be a USD stablecoin but is assessed now as $0.88?
2. Coingecko does not make any difference between BUSD on Ethereum blockcain and BUSD on Binance Smart Chain, despite, according to Binance (https://www.binance.com/en/blog/ecosystem/understanding-busd-and-binancepeg-busd-5526464425033159282), those are two different tokens:May I choose BUSD with an asterisk «ERC20 token»?

I call a stable coin a coin that reflects a fiat currency ($/€/£, etc..).
PAX Gold is not a stable coin because it is based on gold, it's still a speculative product.
Neutrino is a stable coin even though it has lost its peg. At your own risk.


I want to keep it simple to manage for me (or LoyceV). If I have to check 36 sites to verify the price of an altcoin, it's not going to work. The reference site is Coingecko.
If you have a better site (simple and reliable) that makes the difference between the different blockchains, I'm interested, but it will be for the next contest.

Rational;

• Monero (XMR) because it's been my experience that it's exchange rate with BTC has been fairly stable, therefor it gets the lion's share.  Of course it's among the very few alts I trade, so my perception of the alt market is admittedly limited.
• Doge Coin (DOGE) because it's unwise to underestimate the power of persuasion.  It wouldn't surprise me to see Elon incorporate it into Twitter sooner or later, and if that happens in 2023 that could be a boon.
• Binance-USD (BUSD) as a hedge against volatility.
• GRIN because of wishful thinking.  I like the coin, and I like MimbleWimble.

And for those who want more explanations:

- Ethereum because this is still the leading platform for smart contracts. One day, Bitcoin will take over, but 2023 is still too early, so in the meantime Ethereum will stay the reference in that field. And the graph looks nice, it could very well go up. (Or, it could also go down. I don't freakin' know.)

- Hacken, well, that one is a pretty low cap, which does not seem to be moving much recently (price-wise). For the record, I remember participating to its signature campaign back in 2017 (one of the very few I did; didn't earn much tho, with my 'Member' rank). That being said, I've seen that name a few times recently, which is quite surprising for such a low-cap, so I guess it's still alive... Dunno what to expect, so wait and see.

- Quant... let's be honest, I don't know shit about this one. That's pure gamble: the price is going up a bit, but reasonably, so in a bullish context that might be an interesting bet. Also, I spent ten seconds on their website and saw "finance" and "blockchain", it sounds typically like the kind of shitcoin that might attract a lot of capital. But yeah, I spent literally two minutes looking at it and don't wanna spend more. Wouldn't play with real money.

- Monero is the only altcoin that is not a shitcoin. I mean, it has values. But its value, in terms of price, well, idk, the graph doesn't inspire me. For now it's going up and in the long run it will probably stay strong, especially if governments keep messing around with our privacy, but for I'm not sure about its mid-term performance. Hence the low percentage in the above table. Also, I saw a Monero sticker in the street this afternoon; that never happened with any other altcoin.

Hey Loyce, I noticed that your csv.txt doesn't have the columns in the right order (order of latest results), while csv2.txt does.

Here below a small Python script for everyone to quickly render the latest standings. Requirements are plotly and pandas.
Not sure if something similar had been posted before, but it was quick to do.. :)

The first csv is in the original order, the second version is to make the graph more readable my sorting them based on the current total.

I see, makes sense. What's still confusing though, is that csv2.txt uses a comma as decimal separator, meanwhile csv.txt uses the standard english decimal point / period. The csv column delimiter is also different, but that's usually not a big deal. I did have to fiddle around (as seen in line 11-12) with that comma, though.

Would you like a static link that always shows the latest graph? I could fire up a mini server later and make it auto-run daily & update the image.

The comma is only because of my own spreadsheet default.
I think a static link is perfect, it should be able to update I've seen it work with Bitcoin price images.

Update: Bitcoin line thickness was increased. Automatic update at 00:15 UTC worked without issues. Bitcoin now also always receives the official #f7931a color, while the others I believe are random.
Regarding scores: we've got a tight race! Today, casperBGD and Trofo surpassed xSkylarx, after having the lead for a couple days. Bitcoin also surpassed quite a few users, including myself. O0

Yeah, I noticed.. :D Actually, I was monitoring it and tweaking it the last few days. There was an issue with the second script and I also added the latest total portfolio value of each participant to the graph labels, as well.

Many coins are called "Cryptocurrencies", but not all. Something must have changed on the page. At least the abbreviations and links are still correct.

I tried another server, and it worked again. But I can't keep getting new VPSses, and clearly they don't want me to download 82 pages anymore :( So unless someone has an idea how to get those pages, I'll have to end daily updates:
Admittedly, I downloaded those pages without delay, because I wanted the data to be as close to midnight as possible.

They have free API (https://www.coingecko.com/en/api/documentation) with limitations of 10-30 calls/minute. It's not simultaneously, but 3-4 minutes difference is not a big deal I guess. Maybe if to talk to them they'll allow to use this option with the same IP for our contest?

Any idea why bnb (https://api.coingecko.com/api/v3/simple/price?ids=bnb&vs_currencies=usd) isn't working in the API? It works on the site (https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bnb).
There are more coins that don't work in the API.

I've checked now, they have wrong explanation of how to find ID of a token. ID for BNB is binancecoin (https://api.coingecko.com/api/v3/simple/price?ids=binancecoin&vs_currencies=usd).
While searching there is a redirect with id= parameter. It can also be get with search API lower on the API page. I can list correct ID for the tokens don't work correctly if you name them.

I got worried whether my script was down again, but this time the issue is on your side. ;)
There seem to be some free APIs with hundreds of supported coins, such as https://coinlayer.com. But I can't vouch for any of those. Only ever used CoinGecko's API myself.

CoinMarketCap's API may work as well (but does also require an account):

BNB does work on CMC's API, apparently.. 0:)

Using the API created some new things to deal with (such as scientific notication, which didn't work with bc (https://ss64.com/bash/bc.html)).
Tomorrow's update should work again :)

Always have been pump-and-dump schemes.

Some survive, but the majority keeps dropping. And even if the "altcoin market share" grows, that's because new altcoins take a part of the pie too. It may be interesting to see the average portfolio value for each day, and compare that to Bitcoin. My guess it the average keeps dropping further compared to Bitcoin.

I can keep it running. That's what I did for last year's edition, but something broke scraping Coingecko, and I haven't fixed it for last year yet.

Vispilio really nailed it with Radiant Capitol, it appears that's one of the better performing alts of the year so far.  It was trading at a fraction of a penny at the turn of the year, and now it's still up over 100x.  I'm not up on shitcoinery either, but man, makes me think I should put $100 in each of the alts Vispillio chooses next year.  :D

Considering the $780 first prize this year, how likely is this to be manipulated? Let's say someone picked a low-volume altcoin that nobody uses, and right before the deadline places a $200 market buy order. He buys everything there is to buy, the price skyrockets, and suddenly his portfolio is worth $10,000.
I'm not much into altcoins and I can't easily check if there is a coin for which this would be possible, but it seems like a scenario that can happen.

Radiant dropped the ball in the 2nd part of the year, their yield curve turned actually negative (for max looping), they need to sort out their reward incentives, so they missed out on the bullish euphoria so far...

Ronin is a robust choice, gaming will be huge in web 3, and Solana made a great comeback after SBF got sentenced and depositors got a little consolation from due justice...

Just an honest suggestion for next year, I think it would make great sense if Halab secures all the funds in advance from the voluntary sponsors in the beginning, to avoid any unnecessary drama regarding the reward structure down the line.

It looks like they're blocking my scraper when I'm half way through. I don't have time to fix it right now.

Update: as a quick test, I've increased the delay between scraping from 6 to 16 seconds. That means the scraping time is going to vary a lot per altcoin. I'll see if this works tomorrow. I don't get it though: what's the point of an api if you don't even allow someone to scrape data with a whopping 6 seconds delay between downloads?

Update: The last update worked again (it just takes more than 40 minutes now). I've wiped 4 days with incomplete data, so the graph should be okay again tomorrow (with a 4 day hole, that is).

Thanks, it's working again. Even if it's not as precise, it gives an idea of the ranking. Even if it's very close for the podium and it could be decided by the photo finish.
