But if this is true then this would allow me to expand a bit further! :) I'm still down 3 x S19APro's @ 110TH with control boards on all 3 on the blink... Hope this new firmware sorts that out too!! ;D Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: sidehack on December 14, 2022, 03:21:50 AM Wonder how many months they've been running tuned in their own farms.
Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: philipma1957 on December 14, 2022, 03:27:34 AM Wonder how many months they've been running tuned in their own farms. Months how bout since nov 2021 say a year and some change. much like the s9 had asic boost and a big increase in efficiency. but a 100 th at 2950 vs a 100th at 2550 means 1 more s19 for every six i have. we have 8 crappy pieces of old gear mining at 130th that should do 400th. we will replace all of them in the next month so 130th will go to 800th. we will be near 3ph. by march 1 and maybe 4ph by years end. at 25 watts a th the room maxes at 8ph. but we need to push cooling ideas. How many of these are going to end up with bricked control boards after the update? (I'm still down 3 at this point waiting on warranty parts. Meh..) Of course, nothing new even for them when they used to call it Low Power or Enhanced Low power whatever. MicroBT has a Low mode as well. My fear is that its good chance to lock out again others from the control board. I doubt it will brick them, just not allow other fw to run without some hardware modification or until someone figures a method to "jailbreak" it. Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: philipma1957 on December 17, 2022, 05:26:49 PM This is probably just an undervolting firmware that will run at lower hashrate but higher efficiency. It is almost always under-voting. But under-volting is tricky. Depending on how it is done and the particular unit you have some units are spectacular at undervaluing. Many years ago I had a s-7 it was a ridiculously good unit. 4th and 1000 watts with 0 errors a flawless machine. In fact it would go 90 days without an error not 1. If it did that the software would become confused and you had to reboot to set the counters. the equivalent would be a 110th s19 pro doing 100th at 2400 watts endlessly with zero errors. I have some L3+ units that do full speed at 700 watts, normally at 800 watts you get 500 mhs some of the L3+ do 500 mhs at 700 watts. So the freq does not need dial down at all. I suspect an s19 tweaked properly could do 19 watts brains is claiming 20.5 I am sure there are 19 Watters around. Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: Artemis3 on December 18, 2022, 04:00:48 AM Proper tweak is exactly what the autotuning from Braiins OS+ does. If you were to do it manually, it would take you hundreds if not thousands of combinations. Braiins isn't claiming anything, that was an user report i got directly, i even added their screenshot (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5414790.msg61432492#msg61432492) and it was their claim of what was measured at the wall. I don't do what others do of throwing numbers just for looks. That user exists and you can talk with the person in the Braiins OS+ telegram group. Do note the chip temperature, it matters.

I'm not trying to throw stones here I'm just saying that this thread was specifically about what Bitmain had announced with their energy saving firmware. Will that mean lower hashrates??? Nobody really knows for 2 more days... I for one do use their OEM firmware since my warranties depend on it. (Even though their support has been crummy) Once the warranties go then I may think about changing things up. One would expect that they have been tuning their S19Pro miners in their own farms for months on end now. Why wouldn't they? I would for sure if a stable firmware that offered a benefit was to be released. Personally I just really didn't care for the unwarranted advertising which to me was quite spammy! Also from the 4EH drop in hash rate in that "related" pool that is being reported today I would say that I might have hit the nail on the head with my assessment of monetary loss. Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: Artemis3 on December 19, 2022, 05:50:57 AM I'm simply clarifying something said by philipma1957 about Braiins OS+. If anything, that pool comment has nothing to do with this and is not affecting anything whatsoever. But due to the permanent harassment and insults of certain individual and their fake accounts (which thankfully have been added to the ignore list) i decided to simply not comment anything about the pool to anyone anymore. If you have any pool related questions, go to the pool and open a ticket with whatever you want to ask about. I'm not going to convince you of anything since its neither a religion nor an advertisement. People in this forum know perfectly well what pool is good and why, and there is a whole section (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=41.0) for that which isn't here.

I can see how you can and should boast to say hey, we did it first and even better. I get it. Not discounting your contribution. There is never a need to convince anyone of anything, I agree fully. The intention of my post was not to insult you or anyone else. I was simply stating that by running the new oem firmware it may offer a similar advantage to non-oem firmware which in fact may cut into the financials of pools and companies like yours. Not personal only my assessment based on logic. Look at it this way. Why would I or anyone else run other than OEM firmware if there is no financial advantage? Most wouldn't therefor my comment about pools and companies losing money after a release for their hardware to make it better like in this scenario is completely relevant. I've seen the bashing posts and threads this wasn't meant to be one of them and apologies if that was the way you read it. Not trying to disrespect you or anyone else here on this forum as I understand the significant efforts and strides you and many others have made for the good of the community. Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: kano on December 20, 2022, 01:33:14 AM Well, also, important point to remember, that when you use 3rd party firmware, they are taking some % of your hash rate also.
So if you do such measurements above as altair_tech has done, you have to remove the % off your TH performance numbers, since some at least don't do the fee mining all at the same time as pool mining, but rather take the fee mining away at various times. Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: altair_tech on December 20, 2022, 04:12:06 AM The standard power version on the new fw has a very small efficiency improvement over old fw.
111 Th at 3260 Watts (compared to 111Th at 3368 Watts on old fw) . Chip temps on new fw are a little bit cooler which might explain the 100watts power draw reduction compared to old fw. New FW seems to be working the fans harder to keep the chips cooler. Bitmain probably realized that there's a significant efficiency gain to be had from lower chip temps and implemented it in this version. https://i.imgur.com/Tv7LNb7.png Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: sidehack on December 20, 2022, 04:14:10 AM Probably dropped the core voltage by a few percent to do that. Decreasing chip temps would be a compounding effect, and then shaving off a few more watts with less fan.

And Kano is also correct, the "Real Hashrate" as reported in the miner UI is not what reaches the pool but 97.5% of that, so it does make perfect sense to balance the features. Doing this correction, Sadnudbi's 20.88 W/TH becomes 21.41 W/TH. I installed it on my S19J Pro 104T (has beaglebone board). Here's the side by side comparison of performance between the old FW and the two modes on new FW. https://i.imgur.com/HrCoD6H.jpg Standard power mode on new FW seems identical to old firmware. The low power mode does reach the 25.5 W/Th that bitmain promised but lowers hashrate by about 20%. It runs at fixed frequency, there's no additional autotuning downtime. The miner boots right up and starts hashing. Since the miner only pull about 8.7 amps on low power mode, people might be able to squeeze two miners on 20A circuits (I know it breaks the 80% rule, but also know that some people will still do it) I also ran this test with AMLOGIC control board on the same miner and got identical results for all 3 columns. If you have a AMLOGIC board on the miner, you don't need to replace it to be able to underclock now. This new firmware isn't as customizable as Vnish or Braiins, but happy to see Bitmain provide additional options to miners. That fan says it can do: Model........Size.........Frequency...Voltage......Current....Power.........Spe ed.............Noise........Air Flow CFM......Pressure HF100......4 Inch.......60HZ........110V.........0.55A........60W..........2400r/min........<31dB.......200..................150 Pa HF150......6 Inch.......60HZ........110V.........0.68A........75W..........2450r/min........<37dB.......395..................300 Pa HF200.....8 Inch......60HZ.......110V.......1.73A.....190W.......2500r/min......<40dB.........735........380 Pa as much as 735 cfm. Now these four fans in place do 225+225 = 450 then the out flow do 225+225 which is 450 but when fans are in series they do not add to 450 + 450= 900 they are more likely to be in the 500-600 cfm when at top speed. thus this 8 inch blower should be more than good enough set to top speed of 2500 rpm and doing 735cfm I am hoping to set to 2000 rpm and maybe it works for high hash. I am hoping to set to 1500 rpm and maybe it works for low hash. I have one for braiins and one for bitmain. after comparing I will run some with each. I have 8 s19's on hand. looking for 25-30 more. this firmware will save me in the summer. I will run 4ph in the winter say 38 at 100-110th power = 118kwatts I will run 3.2ph in the summer say 38 at 80-90th. power = 82kwatts I may avoid getting liquid cooling. Really nice data, thank you. Do you have any data on dB before and after LPM? Seeing as the fans RPM go down significantly I'm wondering how much change in noise. Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: Saskfarmer on December 21, 2022, 03:20:48 PM In theory this would be a win win if we hit wide scale adoption. Drop in hash for efficiency netting a lower difficulty. Oh wait miners would just add more miners. ::)

We see two people (one well known) saying they are getting the performance - so sounds like it's real. Then other new accounts and someone "who heard it on reddit" saying it's not happening. Not really hard to choose between those two options :) Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: thierry4wd on December 25, 2022, 03:15:55 PM For once, I agree with Kano :D
I see also, a comparison, of two firmware, same hashrate, but colder chip... at no time did it speak about the ventilator!!! ? on colder chips, they run at an additional 2000 rpm... it doesn't shock anyone? Then, at no time does anyone speak of a fundamental! temperature ! the new firmware launches the hashboards in normal mode with 20mv less in voltage, but, in return, regulates the temperature a little higher so its balance... I would like someone here to do the test, let his miner run for about 15min to be well stabilized, make a note of the power and temperature... Still running, unplug the 4 blue wires from the fans (to block them at 100%), and admire the consumption which will drop as it cools down! Just fun :D Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: Saskfarmer on December 26, 2022, 08:22:32 PM Well obviously those miners are operating in low ambient temperature. Running the fans at 100% and low ambient definitely does not conserve power. I find it hard to believe that bitmain couldn't optimize the fans as well if they were focused on a low energy firmware.
Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: thierry4wd on December 26, 2022, 10:37:27 PM well... you find it hard to believe yet it's real, it's even the fundamentals of microconductors, why do farms use immersion?
Would you like to try what I said before denying it? :D I tinker in the firmware, so I know how they work, and they are optimized to have a constant efficiency in particular, do you think that their low power update is magic? no .... just an adjustment, I found that on most of the 19 series, they work very well with 200W less, even hashrate, just downvolt a little ... The palm d'or returns to T19, 84th for arround 3150w of origin... after optimization works at 95th with 3100w... (in real, is S19 renamed on T19 with poor parameter) Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: Sledge0001 on December 26, 2022, 10:39:09 PM Heh - this is fun :) We see two people (one well known) saying they are getting the performance - so sounds like it's real. You can do some experiment if you unplug the blue wire but if this wire is unplug I'm sure the fan will force to run at 100% speed(but to him it blocked to run at full speed). You can test it and let see if it can help to improve efficiency but I guess the fan will eat much power vs lowering the chip temp. Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: thierry4wd on December 27, 2022, 04:06:42 PM Yes, the fans draw more power, but are very largely compensated by the drop in draw of power on mining...
The only thing, which I could confirm with the 19, block the ventilation at 100% manual, if the miner is too cold (chip at 60 or less), then look carefully at the kernel !!! it increases the voltage... why? simply to stay in the "manufacturer" range and not be too efficient! the adjustment is done after 30min in the new firmware, I did not wait 30min to confirm it, to try but please just do the test i said, you learn about miners ;) Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: hZti on December 27, 2022, 04:44:59 PM it increases the voltage... why? simply to stay in the "manufacturer" range and not be too efficient! the adjustment is done after 30min This is so stupid and is the same. with some miners that shut of in the winter because the cooling system can not adapt. I feel like mining rig companies need to step up their testing to more non standard situations. Improves efficiency by 16%, from 34 to 28.5 W/T 2. Drops hashrate by ~ 23% 3. Drops noise by 10 dB 4. Upgrade can be done via web interface 5. Fixed frequency means no autotuning downtime 6. May enable running 2 miners on a 20A circuit 7. Does not block aftermarket firmware like BraiinsOS+ etc Title: Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain Post by: Biffa on January 02, 2023, 02:24:32 AM Highlights for low power mode 1.
