Title: Forum PM feature adjustment
Post by: Little Mouse on February 13, 2023, 08:20:44 AM
I was looking for a PM I sent in response of a PM I received. It took me a while to find out that. My bad if I don't know the feature to find out it in the shortest way possible.
Well, we have a notification for the PMs we respond to.

What about linking the respond to this message? If we click the link, we will be redirected to the message we sent in response to that message.

Forum has three parameters in Inbox and Outbox, that you can use to filter your messages.

I don't think your request will be approve because when I hover mouse on each message, I only see message ID and there is no connection between messages and subjects like post ID and topic ID. I think your request is impossible to do.

Alternatively, you can filter messages by Subject or From/ To columns. Use Subject if you want to filter messages that were sent to multiple receivers. Use From / To to search messages related to specific sender or receiver.

A great suggestion, or make it like a conversation view instead.

Imho, if a variable can add notes to the message that was posted, I think it's also possible adding a 1 line command creates a link to the sent message that was just posted. This command must be at the very end of the stack. cmiiw

The adjustment is good but for the request it might not be possible because if it is possible then the function of the outbox becomes useless. In any message box, there must be an inbox and outbox and other components or features. So clicking on the hyper link text to link you to the original sent message will make a feature redundant which is the outbox component. So let it be that you see the information that, you have responded to that message and if you want to see the message which you have sent, you should go the outbox to see what had been said.

I don't use PMs that much but it might be helpful to include a design of what you'd expect for someone who does.

You have forwarded or responded to this message [link]here and [link]here. Where link is a hyperlink to action=pm;msg=messagenumber

You could then also change "here" for the subject you set the message as too.

Conversation view is a good idea but I don't think it'll be easy to develop unless someone knows php and smf well and does it.

I think that such feature are deeply basic in Simple Machines Forum and it is difficult to change them without a complete change of the version, perhaps they will be better PM system in the next update that no one knows when it will be.

You can speed up your search by clicking on this link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=search and copying the entire quoted text.
Use telegram for fast responses, and PM for sign/verify messages

Sorry to ask, is there no subject included in that your pm? Most at times is very difficult to look for a pm without a subject, and if you couldn't find the pm anymore it may be your have mistakenly deleted it. Because I strongly believe, any messages sent or receive will either be at the inbox or outbox, adding additional features would likely make it smarter, something like personal message search button.

The problem is that with using the forum search messages tool, you can only search in your inbox. You can't search for the messages you have sent out.
Since OP was trying to find a message in his/her outbox, that tool can't be helpful.

Having a subject doesn't make it any much better. I still have to go through all the message I sent. Is there a way to filter messages by subject? I don't know. If such feature existed, there would be no hassle to find out the necessary message.

Not a lot of people use telegram. They prefer forum PM only. However, still that doesn't change anything. Finding a sent message requires quite a long time.

Like hosseinimr93 said, the search function only looks through your inbox (which is kind of frustrating [1]), so the best way to speed up finding a specific reply would be to arrange your outbox alphabetically, by clicking the "Subject" header:

https://imgvb.com/images/2023/02/15/b6772a224c3978c437558605c98d1340.png

For ascending order: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=subject (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=subject)

For descending order: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=subject;desc (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=subject;desc)

You can also arrange it by recipient, by clicking the "To" header, which might end up being faster (especially if you've only sent that person a few PMs):

https://imgvb.com/images/2023/02/15/ae5a81a6af06d65e24c17d5f2a5fccbc.png

For ascending order: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=name (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=name)

For descending order: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=name;desc (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;f=outbox;start=0;sort=name;desc)

[1] I took a quick look at what it would take to fix this limitation, and it's doable, but not trivial. I might make an attempt in the future, but no promises.

Well, it is better but not the best one as I may have a lot of PM as almost same subject since I offer a service where most of the time, the subjects are the same. But still, this solution is good. It will help me to filter out all the other messages which I sent with different subjects. Less time required to cfind out specific message.

Fun fact, I spent more than one hour deleting a few PMs only from 40+ pages of PM. I have decided to keep the inbox/outbox clean and started deleting unnecessary PMs. Was surprised by the number of total PMs here/. I spent quite a long time here already.

But is it possible on software the forum is currently running ?
