Title: What is the motto of bitcoin?
Post by: Stepstowealth on February 23, 2023, 07:32:36 PM
I see many identities and logo of companies and business having a motto or phrase attached to their Logo. Does bitcoin have any official motto or phrase used or released by satoshi or the developers?

Bitcoin is neither a company nor a business, it has a logo but it has no motto. Bitcoin logo is enough, or it isn't? The logo that indicates bitcoin is enough.

Well, the full title of Bitcoin whitepaper Satoshi has written is: Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System
It's not an actual motto, but it can be seen as an official phrase (or short definition for Bitcoin)

Bitcoin does not have an official motto, but based on how it operates, there would be some unofficial options;
• Decentralized, unregulated,
• Not your keys; not your coins,
• Do your own thing,
• 2 is company, a third party is a crowd.

That being said, we don't need a motto, imo. You make out what you want from Bitcoin and use it the way you want.

Don't trust, verify!

No of course there is no "motto",and neither this is the official one :P ... but probably this is the best motto you can adapt when thinking about bitcoin and why we have an invention like this ;)

It is clear that the logo has an important meaning for bitcoin because it is a bitcoin identity for people to recognize, but it does not mean that the bitcoin logo is the same as other product logos that highlight the meaning side more. I mean the bitcoin logo does not have a specific motto, vision and mission to translate and there is absolutely no relationship like a company.

Decentralized and unmanageable is proof that there is no specific motto to the value of the logo, because bitcoin has its own uniqueness that is not owned by any company logo.

There is no bitcoin motto. But I believe there is mission, reading the bitcoin whitepaper you will come to understand and appreciate the purpose of bitcoin which is liberate the masses from the machine they have been programmed to feed. I think Satoshi was/is a liberal, who believed decentralized cryptocurrency could give the people some control and privacy of their money and how they choose to spend it. It’s been 14 years since the bitcoin white paper was published, governments are fast making plans to revolutionize the banking sector with CBDCs and we don’t see it coming because we are distracted by “social issues”, the definition of a woman has become more difficult than a math equations.

Is there any official moto exist? I think no official one but rather many people create their own motto or saying about this since we have different approach towards what we think about bitcoin. Maybe Satoshi just want to have decentralize option in finance side that's why he create bitcoin and he's so successful for creating it since this is very well known until today and global adoption is nearly coming for bitcoin.

Bitcoin is not owned by any individual or company or organization (profitable or non-profitable) so a motto or vision isn't necessary as such. If you want to understand the purpose of Bitcoin, I suggest you take time to read the white paper. It's just 9 pages

One of the earliest mottos is "Vires in Numeris", which means "strength in numbers". I don't know the source, but it was on the Casascius physical bitcoins.

Another is "Not your keys, not your coins", which was originated by Andreas M. Antonopoulos.

Bitcoin doesn't have any official motto or phrase released by Satoshi or the development team even the orange logo used for Bitcoin was independently developed by this forum user named Bitboy (https://web.archive.org/web/20130525203057/https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631.0;all) years ago and the community accepts it.
However, Satoshi once use the word "I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party."
Nevertheless, some people use the word "Vires in numeris" meaning strength in numbers as the motto for Bitcoin but it's not official.

There is no official motto, because Bitcoin doesn't need one, it's not a company or a shitcoin project, so it doesn't need marketing. Bitcoin devs are simply writing code, while shitcoin devs are more focused on promoting their creation before it can even work properly.

If someone tried to push for adopting official Bitcoin motto, I would be very suspicious of them, because it could mean they try to hijack Bitcoin.

So far I haven't thought about the motto or phrase attached to the Bitcoin Logo because for me Bitcoin is better even without the Motto. But I also don't know if Satoshi ever made a Motto for Bitcoin because I also never came across this before, and I think that's a natural thing too because Bitcoin is not the same as other companies or certain businesses that require a Motto to be more easily recognized by many people.

Though it doesn't really have but I rather say bitcoin motto is I lead other follows

It doesn't lead to anything or what Bitcoin tried to accomplish, I still go for the most popular description of Bitcoin which
Quote
A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System
because it fully describes what Bitcoin is whenever someone asks me what Bitcoin is that is my short answer Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System, I think if Satoshi is still alive today he can confirm that its the official motto because it's on the title of the whitepaper.

Heck — even the famous orange BTC logo isn't "official" and isn't even released by Satoshi Nakamoto. It was just created by a forum user called bitboy (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631.0) (not Bitboy Crypto, the YouTube grifter). What people think as Bitcoin's 'official' anything mostly isn't official — it's just what the community chose to use.

I don't know who originated the motto "Be your own bank" but it is a popular motto for Bitcoin too.

This motto is true only if people own their private keys/ mnemonic seeds and it is related to another motto "Not your keys, not your coins"

It may be worth adding "HODL" as we all know that long-term holding of Bitcoin almost always leads to success. I think that most bitcoin adherents adhere to this motto, and of course, the word "freedom" in the right sense can complement the understanding of the very purpose of bitcoin.

While Bitcoin does not have an official motto or phrase that has been released by Satoshi or the developers, there are several phrases that are often associated with Bitcoin and its ethos.

One of the most well-known phrases is "Be Your Own Bank," which highlights Bitcoin's decentralized and trustless nature, enabling individuals to control their own financial assets without the need for intermediaries such as banks.

Another popular phrase is "Hodl," which originated from a typo in a forum post but has since become a rallying cry for Bitcoin holders who believe in its long-term value and are committed to holding onto it through market volatility.

The phrase "Digital Gold" has been used to describe Bitcoin's scarcity and its potential to serve as a store of value similar to traditional gold.

These phrases are not official mottos or slogans, but they have become part of Bitcoin's cultural identity and are often used by its community members to express their beliefs and values.

Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System
I think it is the most stressed phrase in the Bitcoin white paper and it simply explain what Bitcoin is designed for and how it is been represented and exchanged between peers. Like you pointed out it can be a motto though not official but it is so explanatory even to someone who just sees those lines of phrase alone or hearing about Bitcoin for the first time.

The fact is that logos and slogans for companies are invented by designers in order for the customer to remember the product better. And Bitcoin is not a product that needs to be sold to someone. Bitcoin and its idea speak for themselves. This is the idea of freedom in its purest form. The idea of honest, distributed ownership. I would say it's a folk product. Therefore, it does not have a slogan. But it can be characterized by the words: Equality, Freedom, Enthusiasm

The only official motto of bitcoin is that there is no official motto.

Bitcoin is for anyone who chooses to use it.

Bitcoin doesn't have a motto because bitcoin isn't companies and business, bitcoins are currencies that don't have mottoes like the dollar, euro, pound,, or even Gold. So I beleieve, you will not ask this question if read satoshi's message on the genesis block. "Chancellor on Brink of Second Bailout for Banks" which means bitcoins is built get over and fix the fiat system.

I think this is one misinterpretation that many persons out there carry in their head that bitcoin is a company that's controlled by some group of individuals with the big bag. But this is not true, as bitcoin is not a company neither is it owned or controlled by a group of individuals and there's no logo associated to it. Bitcoin just have a short form for BTC which actually is not a logo. It's just a decentralized system owned by no group.

Satoshi did not mention any motto when creating bitcoin, but the purpose of creating bitcoin was to help us get rid of our dependence on a centralized fiat system, a peer-to-peer payment method that requires no intermediaries or third parties. It means that using bitcoin will make us free, and I think “FREE” is the motto that Satoshi wanted to send to us when creating bitcoin for us.

This is your own assumption but is not fsr from the truth, because bitcoin is truly the coin's leader and pathfinder.

I like your self-formulated Bitcoin motos anyways.

No special marketing was done for Bitcoin, Satoshi created the Logo without having a motto because he was not looking for consumers like a company selling a product does. Even without a motto, people are very interested in Bitcoin, now Bitcoin is one of the most sought-after assets by various groups, ranging from ordinary people, entrepreneurs, companies or even people who work in the government who have a desire to own Bitcoin.
The Bitcoin logo is very well known by the public which makes their desire to get Bitcoin grow, by themselves they can play their role by using each individual's version of the motto.

Another word for Motto is Purpose, you can find it in the whitepaper that Satoshi wrote in full. Do it your own way to find another motto of Bitcoin, Bitcoin motto depends on how to think about Bitcoin. If you can add to the list of wealth from Bitcoin investment, then you put Moto Bitcoin in a positive position.

"vires in numeris" & "not your key, not your coins" are the best sentences imo.  apart from that there is "be your own bank" this is also a sentence that i really like.

The motto of Bitcoin is BTC...LOL

Bitcoin is an asset, just like gold and other valuables, they often do not have a motto like organizations.

The most are for them (assets) to have a nickname just like "black gold" in the case of crude oil, which I believe Bitcoin does not have yet.

Although some have already mentioned it, I think that the saying "Not your keys, not your coins" has perhaps the greatest weight and importance when it comes to Bitcoin. Many people don't really understand what this is about, because in order to understand they still need to know some basics - and if they knew what that means, then there would be less Bitcoin in custodial wallets, and that would mean less risk in the event that they are hacked in at any moment.

Some research says that only a few of the largest CEXs have millions of BTC in their possession, which means that the vast majority have a completely wrong attitude when it comes to the risk and security of their digital assets.
